Fin dalla sua apertura nel 1912, la storia dell’hotel Maria Cristina è stata strettamente legata alle
vicende della vita culturale di San Sebastian.
Nel tardo XIX secolo la città di mare divenne una delle mete preferite per nobili e aristocratici
che vi giungevano per beneficiare delle proprietà terapeutiche del sole e del mare,
recentemente riconosciute.
San Sebastian passò dall’essere un villaggio di pescatori a una fiorente citta cosmopolita che
richiedeva strutture moderne e di lusso per soddisfare le esigenze dei suoi ospiti più esigenti.
Questo rinnovamento urbano è avvenuto in piena epoca Belle Époque e oggi il maggior numero

Nel 1953 con l’inaugurazione del Festival del cinema a san Sebastian, l’hotel divenne il luogo di
incontro preferito da star del cinema, attirando nomi leggendari come Elizabeth Taylor, Bette
Davis, Woody Allen, Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Brad Pitt e Susan Sarandon, solo per citarne
alcuni.

Since opening in 1912 the Hotel Maria Cristina has been closely linked to the history and cultural
life of San Sebastian.
In the late 19th century the seaside town became a favorite destination for royalty and
aristocrats who came to enjoy the sunshine and newly recognized therapeutic properties of sea
bathing.
San Sebastian had passed from being a sleepy fishing village into a thriving cosmopolitan town
requiring luxurious, modern facilities to meet the demands of its discerning guests.
This urban blossoming occurred at the height of the Belle Époque era, and today the majority of
buildings, including the Hotel Maria Cristina, are constructed in this style.
Since the San Sebastian International Film Festival was inaugurated in 1953 Hotel Maria
Cristina has been the rendezvous spot and preferred accommodation of the stars, attracting
legendary names such as Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Woody Allen, Julia Roberts, Richard
