17th INTERDISCIPLINARY MEETING PROMOTED
BY ISTITUTO B. ZACCAGNINI
AGE, WORK, NUTRITION AND VISION
PREVENTION AND MAINTENANCE OF VISUAL EFFICIENCY
The 17th Interdisciplinary Meeting that will take place in Bologna on February 9th and 10th, 2014
has by now become a regular event on the industry calendar and provides an interdisciplinary
approach and an important forum and meeting point for Optics and Optometry and related
disciplines dealing, in different fields and different ways, with vision problems.
A natural result of our interdisciplinary approach that has always characterised this event has
been the opening of partnerships with international institutions, especially from English-speaking
countries.
An important delegation from the School of Optometry - Life & Health Sciences of Aston University
in Birmingham, UK will be present at the Meeting.
The Meeting will focus on a very topical social theme in a situation in which many different
factors come into play: the economic crisis that affects welfare entitlements, with increase in life
expectancy, later retirement age and widespread use of ITC devices in all fields that jeopardise
quality of vision.
New knowledge about the relationships between lifestyles and quality of vision demand more
focus on care requirements of the increasing number of older workers as well as more sophisticated
early diagnosis and treatment methods to prevent challenging age-related problems which could
become hard to solve.
Following a period of due diligence to evaluate quality and standards, Aston University have
given the go-ahead to the Instituto B, Zaccagnini (IBZ) to run a BSc Optometry and Clinical
Practices course (with Honours). The Aston University team, led by Dr Fiona Lacey, Associate
Dean of International Development in the School of Life & Health Sciences (LHS), gave a
favourable review to the Instituto B, Zaccagnini and the Aston University Senate subsequently
sanctioned the partnership which is destined to change the future of Italian Optometry.
The three-year programme will enable students to obtain the Bachelor of Science degree (BSc)
in Optometry and Clinical Practices (with Honours). This will be conferred by Aston University
in Birmingham. Aston University is one of the top ranked universities in the UK, and has an
outstanding record for Optometry education and research. Students will be registered at both
universities and will have the same rights and obligations as their fellow students attending the
whole course in the UK. Students will study the majority of the course in Italy, at I.B.Z. and all
activities related to clinical practice will take place at Aston in the UK. The curriculum is devoted
to the optometric disciplines and includes a four-week stay at the Aston School of Optometry.
Students will be accommodated at the Student Residences on the Aston University Campus.
Teaching and learning will take place in English, with the support of English language courses
focused on Optometry subjects, this has been organised by IBZ. Semester evaluations and
exams will take place under the direct supervision of Aston University.
The course will be inaugurated in the presence of the Aston University staff involved in the
partnership, including Prof James Wolffsohn, Deputy Executive Dean, LHS, Dr Fiona Lacey,
Associate Dean of International Development, LHS and Dr. Shehzad Naroo, Senior Lecturer in
Optometry (LHS) on Sunday, February 9th, 2014 at 2.30 pm in the Plenary Hall of the 17th
Interdisciplinary Congress: Age, Work, Nutrition and Vision.
During the Meeting, the Italian-English Dictionary of Optometry by Professor Luigi Lupelli will be
officially presented. Alongside with the joint research programmes, this dictionary represents a
further step forward in the partnership between Istituto B. Zaccagnini and the British academic
community.

WORKSHOP SESSION
The session includes four parallel workshops,
therefore participants can only attend one workshop.
Please, indicate the workshop you wish to attend on your registration form.
14:30 - 16:30
1)“Clinical Record Keeping in Contact Lens Practice”
Instructors: Prof. James Wolffsohn and Prof. Fabrizio Zeri
It is important to accurately capture anterior eye characteristics to allow subsequent detection of change as well as for
medico-legal protection. For clinicians this is required to detect disease and monitor treatment. These characteristics can
be described in words, graded using photographic, pictorial or combination scales, sketched or photographed. This
presentation will examine anterior eye recording techniques in detail, challenging the audience to reflect on their own
practice which will be captured in advance using a survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DH5PWX2 and how it
can be modified to enhance patient care within the time pressures of a clinical examination. It will also share research
developing a simplified method of recording soft contact lens fit to ensure quick, but comprehensive recording of the key
parameters which characterise lens mobility.
2)“Refractive correction attitudes and use with age”
Istruttori: Dott. Shehzad Naroo e Prof. Luigi Lupelli
It is the era of the ageing population but no one likes to admit they are getting old and need readings glasses, so many
are looking for non-spectacle correction of their presbyopia. This session highlights the options currently available in
contact lenses, surgery and intraocular lenses.
3)“Dentistry and Optometry: a joint approach for correct posture over time”
Instructors: Prof. Pietro Gheller and Dr. Piergiorgio Tonello
During the workshop, by using an interdisciplinary clinical protocol, we shall try to identify and analyse the visual
postural sensitivity of an ametropic subject, measuring variables and sharing the correction or rehabilitation approach
with other professionals - osteopath, dentist, podologist, orthopaedic consultant. We shall also present a standardised
clinical protocol, with simple postural clinical tests, and discuss the use of a balance platform spacifically developed for
vision professionals.
4)“Progressive lenses: evaluation of binocularity and refraction”
Instructors: Prof. Salvatore Pintus and Prof. Francesco Sala
Ongoing evolution of progressive lenses offers new opportunities to manage the visual requirements of ametropic
patients while the introduction of new design options provides more sophisticated solutions and create new frontiers
in daily clinical practice. Dispensing must be guided by the need to obtain sharp and comfortable vision especially
when progressive lenses are prescribed and synergy must be pursued of different elements: visual acuity and quality of
binocular vision. Aim of the workshop is to provide participants with the foundations of optometric procedures and all
necessary information on the main criteria of comfort in dispensing this correction syst.
