nonostante la difficile situazione economica che ci ha
accompagnati durante lo scorso anno, nel 2009 la SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION è stata in grado di raccogliere
donazioni per un ammontare chiaramente superiore
rispetto all’anno precedente. Questo dimostra come i
donatori sappiano riconoscere anche in tempi difficili la
necessità di sostenere la ricerca nel campo della malattia di Alzheimer e di altre patologie neurodegenerative
e agiscano quindi in maniera coerente.
Despite the general economic crisis, the SYNAPSIS
FOUNDATION managed in 2009 to attract a much
higher amount of donations than in the previous year.
This shows that donors are prepared to recognize the
need to support research in the field of Alzheimer‘s Disease and other neurodegenerative disorders – and to
respond accordingly.
Dopo aver costituito la SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION e averla
guidata durante sei anni, a fine febbraio 2010 il dottor
Alfred Kammer ha ceduto la sua carica a Erich Tschirky.
Siamo inoltre lieti di potervi comunicare che il professor
Denis Monard, presidente dell’Accademia svizzera di
scienze naturali, ha offerto la propria disponibilità quale
nuovo membro del Consiglio di fondazione.
In questo resoconto troverete un omaggio all’opera del
dottor Alfred Kammer e un ritratto delle personalità che
si sono appena aggiunte ai nostri ranghi.
Siamo pronti ad affrontare le sfide del nuovo anno con
nuove forze e coraggio rinnovato.

After setting up the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION and serving as Managing Director for six years, Dr. Alfred Kammer is to hand over office to Erich Tschirky at the end
of February 2010.
Furthermore, we are pleased to inform you that Prof.
Denis Monard, President of the Swiss Academy of Sciences, has made himself available as a new member of
the Board of Trustees.
You will find a laudation of Dr Kammer‘s work and portraits of our new members and associates in this issue
of the Annual Report.
We look forward, with renewed energy and fresh enthusiasm, to tackling the challenges of the coming
years.
And we would like to take this opportunity of thanking
all our donors for their long-standing support for the

La SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION finanzia i progetti da essa
sostenuti e i servizi da essa offerti mediante donazioni.
Le attività di reperimento di fondi si orientano da un
canto ad altre fondazioni, ai consulenti di potenziali donatori, quali i gestori patrimoniali, i consulenti finanziari,
gli avvocati e notai, e dall’altro ad aziende.
Durante il periodo considerato, al pubblico di destinazione interessato della Svizzera tedesca e del Ticino
sono stati spediti in primavera il rapporto annuale 2008
e in autunno una newsletter. Inoltre si è preso personalmente contatto con donatori potenziali.
Non si è tenuta alcuna manifestazione informativa pubblica.
Le donazioni erogate nel 2009 ammontano a CHF
922’620 e, nonostante l’attuale difficile situazione finanziaria, risultano superiori di CHF 244‘535 rispetto all’anno
precedente. Vi sono inoltre delle donazioni promesse sino
al 2013 per un importo complessivo pari a CHF 1‘311’680.
Praticamente tutte le donazioni proviene da altre fondazioni. Oltre ai donatori che sostengono la SYNAPSIS
FOUNDATION già da diversi anni, siamo con grande soddisfazione riusciti a coinvolge anche nuovi grandi donatori. Le donazioni si suddividono come segue:

Dal 2004, anno di costituzione della SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION, il totale delle donazioni ricevute e di quelle promesse già ammontano alla cifra di CHF 6 milioni.

In considerazione della sua strategia sino ad ora attuata in maniera discreta, la SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION è
ancora poco nota presso il grande pubblico. Le donazioni spontanee da parte di privati sono quindi per noi
piuttosto rare. Il Consiglio di fondazione ha in linea di
principio deciso di raccogliere ulteriori mezzi ricorrendo
alla cosiddetta direct mail, che permette di indirizzarsi
direttamente a un gran numero di persone private selezionate. La direct mail verrà attivata non appena sarà
stato possibile garantirne il finanziamento iniziale.

Dal 2004, anno della sua istituzione, la SYNAPSIS
FOUNDATION ha sostenuto progetti per un importo
globale pari a CHF 2‘490‘840. Analogamente all’anno
precedente, la SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION non ha emesso
alcun bando di concorso pubblico per il sostegno alla
ricerca neppure nel 2009, in quanto i nuovi fondi disponibili a lungo termine non avrebbero giustificato i
considerevoli costi di una tale selezione.

Statuto fiscale
La SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION è una fondazione di diritto
svizzero, di pubblica utilità, esente da tasse e posta sotto la vigilanza del Dipartimento federale degli interni. In
base al diritto fiscale federale e cantonale, in Svizzera
le donazioni possono essere dedotte nella dichiarazione
d’imposta entro i limiti concessi dalla legge.
Progetti
Nel campo delle patologie neurodegenerative, la SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION sostiene sia i progetti rivolti alla
ricerca biomedica di base, sia le attività nell’ambito della
ricerca clinica. Le patologie maggiormente interessate
sono la malattia di Alzheimer, il morbo di Parkinson, la
sclerosi laterale amiotrofica e le affezioni dei prioni. Grazie alle competenze del Consiglio di consulenza scientifica della SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION, i donatori hanno
la certezza che il sostegno sarà garantito soltanto ai
progetti di maggior valore, il cui andamento è ad ogni
modo soggetto a verifiche regolari.
Grazie alla SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION, nel 2009 è stato
possibile sostenere in totale dieci progetti e un ufficio di
professore assistente. I progetti selezionati fanno capo
ai seguenti ricercatori:

In seguito alla sua nomina a presidente del Consiglio di
amministrazione di UBS, a inizio 2009 il dottor h. c. Kaspar Villiger la lasciato il nostro comitato patrocinatore.
Ed è con profondo dolore che abbiamo preso conoscenza del decesso del professore Franz Müller-Spahn,
membro del Consiglio di consulenza scientifica, avvenuto in seguito a una grave malattia il 4 agosto 2009.
Nelle loro rispettive funzioni, entrambi hanno contribuito in maniera essenziale a che la SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION venisse percepita si dall’inizio come una fondazione seria, in grado di sostenere progetti di livello elevato.
PROSPETTIVE PER IL 2010
Il Consiglio di fondazione ringrazia il dottor Alfred
Kammer, che dietro suo incarico aveva costituito la SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION guidandola poi durante sei anni,
per il lavoro eccellente e il suo straordinario impegno.
Il dottor Kammer rimarrà a disposizione durante il periodo di transizione, in particolare per quanto concerne
l’assistenza ai donatori più importanti. Il suo successore,
Erich Tschirky, è giurista di formazione con MBA e ha
lavorato a lungo per l’Ufficio federale della sanità pubblica, tra l’altro in qualità di capo dello stato maggiore e
membro della direzione.
Siamo inoltre lieti di informarvi che il professor Denis
Monard, presidente dell’Accademia svizzera di scienze
naturali ed ex direttore dell’Istituto Friedrich Miescher
di Basilea, ha accettato di far parte del nostro Consiglio
di fondazione.

REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2009
Fundraising
The SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION relies on donations to finance its services and the projects it supports. Its fundraising activities are aimed at other foundations, at the
advisers of potential benefactors – advisers such as asset managers, finance consultants, lawyers and notaries
public – as well as at companies.
During the period under review, the Annual Report for
2008 was dispatched in spring and a Newsletter was
dispatched in autumn to the above-mentioned target
groups in the German-speaking parts of Switzerland
and in Ticino. In addition, potential benefactors were
contacted personally and visited. No public information
events were organized in the period under report.
Donations in 2009 amounted to CHF 922,620, a sum
which, in spite of the poor economic climate, was CHF
244,535 higher than the previous year. Also, a further
total of CHF 1,311,680 has been pledged until the year
2013. Of the money donated, nearly all of it comes from
other foundations. We are pleased to report that we
have been able to gain new large donors in addition to
the donors who have supported the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION for several years. The donations may be broken

Since the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION was established in
2004, it has received donation pledges and actual donations amounting to approx. CHF 6 million.
In addition to those major donors who wish to remain
anonymous, the following institutions and individuals

than CHF 1,000 to the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION:

Due to its previous low-profile strategy, the SYNAPSIS
FOUNDATION is little known in the public eye. This is
why the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION only rarely receives
spontaneous donations from private individuals. As a
result, the Board of Trustees has now decided to try and
acquire additional sources of income via direct mailing
means – i.e. large numbers of private individuals will be
approached in writing. The aim is to launch the direct
mail project as soon as initial finance has been assured.

The members of the Board of Trustees and the Scientific
Advisory Board all serve in an honorary capacity. The
Managing Director works on a commission basis: his remuneration is dependent on the results achieved. The
SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION does not have any employees
under contract.

A detailed Annual Financial Statement for 2009 and the
Auditor‘s Report prepared by BDO Visura can be provided on request.
Legal Status
The SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION is a non-profit tax-exempt
foundation governed by Swiss law. It is under the supervision of the Swiss Department of the Interior. Consequently, donations to the Foundation may be deducted from taxable income to the extent permitted by
taxation legislation on the national and canton levels in
Switzerland.
Projects
To promote research on neurodegenerative diseases,
the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION supports projects in the
area of basic biomedical research and clinical studies.
The focus is on Alzheimer‘s disease, Parkinson‘s disease,
the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and the prion diseases. Thanks to the highly competent Scientific Advisory
Board of the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION, the donor can
be certain that only high-level projects will be supported and that attainment of set targets will be regularly
monitored.
In 2009, thanks to the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION, it was
found possible to support a total of ten projects as well
as an assistant professorship. The projects are headed

Since the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION started up in 2004,
it has supported projects to the total of CHF 2,490,840.
However, as with the previous year, no public tenders
for research support were put out by the SYNAPSIS
FOUNDATION in 2009 – this because the new longterm monies available would not have justified the large
expenditure that a public tender would entail.
Personal news
Following his appointment early 2009 as President of
the UBS Board of Directors, Dr. h. c. Kaspar Villiger resigned from the Board of Patrons. It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death, on 4 August 2009,
of Prof. Franz Müller-Spahn, member of the Scientific
Advisory Board, following a severe illness. In their different capacities, Dr. Villiger and Prof. Müller-Spahn made
essential contributions to ensuring that, from its very
inception, the SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION was perceived
as a serious institution aiming to support projects of the
highest quality.
Prospects 2010
The Board of Trustees would like to extend its gratitude
to Dr. med. Alfred Kammer who, acting on behalf of the
Board of Trustees, succeeded so well in setting up the
SYNAPSIS FOUNDATION and who served as managing
director for six years. He is still at our side to advise us
during the transition phase – especially on matters dealing with the major donors. His successor, Erich Tschirky,
is a lawyer by profession with MBA who has worked for
many years at the Swiss Federal Office of Health as a
chief of staff and member of senior management.
It is also a great pleasure to announce that Prof. Denis
Monard, President of the Swiss Academy of Sciences
and former director of the Friedrich Miescher Institute
in Basel, has agreed to become a member of the Board
of Trustees.
