Returnable systems –
Flow of material with returnable containers
The permanent availability of products is a
decisive criterion for being competitive in
many sectors of industry. Easy, secure and
quick processing of goods movement plays
an important role in this respect. An efficient
transport cycle with returnable systems can
optimize storage and logistics processes and
considerable cost savings can be achieved.
The use of containers instead of disposable
packaging offers a multitude of advantages.
The SSI SCHAEFER returnable transport systems
are not only suitable for storage but in many
cases can perform all tasks with regard to the
flow of material. Depending on the application,
a container can be used selectively or accompany
the products as a storage, production, orderpicking or transport box. When using returnable
containers the goods are securely protected
during storage and transport and repacking
times, transport costs and packaging waste
are‑reduced. After use the containers can be
returned to the transport cycle to be used
again repeatedly.
Rigid containers
SSI SCHAEFER, a leading manufacturer of
containers made from plastic and sheet metal,
offers the right returnable container for every
application. Be it foldable, nesting or rigid
solutions, for whatever method of application
they are all dust- and splash-proof. Optional
sealing offers security against unauthorized
access and additional extras optimize use within
the returnable packaging cycle.
Make use of our know-how accumulated through
decades of experience.

Returnability creates added value
The implementation of a returnable transport
system offers considerable economic benefits.
Cost reductions can be realized in different
areas, for example as a result of

In addition, the environment-friendly aspects also
favour a returnable transport system. After all,
waste prevention is good for the environment
and waste disposal issues are negated.

you are considering.
Foldable containers
Returnable transport systems –
More efficiency for the entire process chain
Returnable transport systems offer particular
advantages in areas where handling of goods
should be carried out as efficiently as possible
in order to ensure a smooth flow. The returnable
transport systems that have been developed
based on every day storage experience meet
these requirements and significantly facilitate
handling.
Contents protection
The returnable containers protect your products
from the weather. Optional security seals for the
prevention of unauthorized access are available.
With these, your goods have optimal protection
against theft and damage.
Traceability
Bar codes and RFID technology allow uninter
rupted tracking of every single container via an
inventory control system, ensuring transparent
processes.
Marketing
The option of producing returnable containers in
your company colour, including the application
of your logo by means of waterproof and nonabrasive hot stamping, can increase your brand
recognition during the entire process chain. The
containers become effectively advertising media
for your company.
Disposal
There are no longer any costs for disposal of
packaging, and no areas or facilities need to be
reserved for that purpose. Due to materials used
in SSI SCHAEFER returnable containers, they
are fully recyclable using environmentally sound
procedures.
Stockpiling
With the use of returnable containers there are
no longer any recurring costs for purchasing,
stockpiling and financing of disposable
packaging.
Order-picking/Handling
Returnable containers can be filled quickly and
easily without any great effort. Unlike disposable
packaging, they do not need to be assembled
first. Returnable transport systems create a
more ergonomic workplace. The containers
have specific hand-grips, are more stable than
disposable packaging and can be more securely
stacked.
Storage/Conveying
Automatic processes can be optimized when
using returnable transport systems. Despatch
output and handling speed are definitely higher
than with disposable packaging. In many cases
one type of container can be used for storage,
order-picking and transport, thus eliminating
unproductive (double-handling) time used for
repacking the goods.
Cost reduction
Benefit from our many years of experience with
returnable transport systems. We will analyse
your logistical processes and explain in detail
how a returnable transport system can be
economically and efficiently implemented. As
part of this, we will show you the cost-saving
potential and together with you, develop a
suitable returnable transport system for your
company.

Who should be interested in a returnable transport system?
Returnable transport systems are worthwhile for all companies that:
■ operate a despatch service between branches,
■have to handle regular goods transport between their company and
a certain group of consignees,
■ have products that can be put into containers,
■ in addition to sales packaging, use transport packaging,
■ desire secure transport that protects their products,
■place value on optimal handling during all process stages
(production/storage/order-picking/distribution)
An overview of the advantages

Renault Nissan Germany AG
Renault on the logistical fast track
Original (OEM) parts in tailor-made returnable containers
For many years Renault has been the biggest
foreign car manufacturer in Germany by far. To
ensure continued success, an innovative and
sophisticated service system is required. With
its 1,500 sales and service support outlets,
Renault possesses a nation-wide extensive
network of dealers. Every day, around 730
Renault dealers are supplied with original
spare parts directly from the central spare parts
warehouse in Brühl. This is also where the
headquarters of Renault Nissan Germany AG
are located.
For this purpose, SSI SCHAEFER developed a
conical returnable container (KMB) especially
Loading the containers from the order-picking cart
Secure locking of the container with 2 plug seals
for Renault. This container protects the original
parts against dirt and unauthorized access.
Thanks to the conical shape, the containers can
be stacked inside each other when empty, thus
saving 75% in space.
Additional benefits in comparison with disposable
packaging are, the reduction of costs with regard
to storage of packaging materials stock, while
at the same time reducing the packaging waste.
The one-off cost of returnable containers set
against the high continual cost of packaging
waste disposal, creates a very quick return on
investment.

SSI SCHAEFER returnable containers
For a number of years Kaufhof Warenhaus AG
has been using SSI SCHAEFER foldable boxes
(FK boxes) in the form of despatch towers, for
transport of goods between the logistics centres
and its branches.
The despatch tower is a returnable transport
system that consists of foldable and stackable
containers (folding boxes). Kaufhof uses two
sizes of FK boxes, which can be stacked
together in a despatch tower. To protect against
theft and during transport the despatch tower
is‑sealed with a cover and strapped.
In the central warehouse the goods required
by the different branches are organized by
order, directly from the pallets or from the shelf
containers into the despatch tower in order to
ensure smooth handling. The loaded despatch
towers are conveyed via driverless transport
systems (AGV) from the manual order-picking
department to the despatch area where they are
loaded onto trucks.
Trasporto dei contenitori dal magazzino al reparto spedizioni
By using despatch towers that can be folded
when empty, the volume of the transport
containers is reduced by approx. 75%. The box
itself can still carry heavy loads when stacked.
In addition to more economic transport, there is
also a reduction of packaging waste compared
with the previously used stitched cardboard
containers.

Bedtime reading material from the container
Media in secure returnable containers
With around 300 plus Weltbild branches in
Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the Weltbild
Publishing Company is one of the leading
companies in its sector. Consistent availability of
products is an essential factor in guaranteeing
customer satisfaction. Branches are supplied
on a daily basis – a logistical and economic
challenge.
It was decided to opt for a returnable transport
system with stable and robust foldable (FK)
boxes from SSI SCHAEFER that can be
assembled into despatch towers – a system that
easily meets the requirements. The
Order-picking the goods into foldable containers
12
despatch towers consist of foldable boxes, layon lids and a dolly. Weltbild uses two sizes of
FK boxes, which can be stacked together in a
despatch tower. By leaving out the shelves in
between, larger products can also be orderpicked directly into the despatch tower and
despatched. To protect against weather, theft‑
and to protect during transport, a sheet and top
cover are applied to the despatch towers, and
then straps are tied around it.
Bar code labels on the containers and accesso
ries allow for permanent tracking of the products
and packaging in the transport chain.
Thanks to the returnable containers, Weltbild
has considerably reduced its amount of waste
when compared with disposable packaging.
Additional savings are achieved due to the
easy distribution of the despatch towers
on logistically economical routes within the
transport chain, and the 75% reduction in
volume of empty return trucks.

HEMA distribution centre,
Utrecht, the Netherlands
HEMA – using one container for everything
A returnable container for storage,
order-picking and transport
HEMA is one of the leading department store chains in the Netherlands
with more than 300 outlets located in the Benelux countries and Germany
generating an annual turnover of approx. 1.3 billion .
At the central distribution centre in Utrecht the different non-food goods
for all outlets are stored. After arrival, the goods are transferred into
SSI SCHAEFER foldable boxes. Then the boxes are recorded and directly
conveyed to an automatic warehouse where they are stored for five days.
Having one box size creates an efficient, universal Stock Keeping Unit
(SKU) for delivery to stores.
With the foldable (FK) box from SSI SCHAEFER a returnable transport
system was introduced, that stands out due to its excellent conveying
properties and that takes optimal advantage of the storage capacities of
the automatic warehouse. The reinforced base does not deflect even with
heavy contents. This way, the FK boxes can be positioned in the automatic
warehouse accurately to the millimetre.

The entire, predominantly automated process of
storage, order-picking and transport can now be
efficiently completed with one type of container
without the need for repacking. Order-picking
takes place via Pick-by-light, which requires a bar
code to be applied to every container. Following
this, the containers are temporarily stored in the
buffer warehouse for order consolidation. For
delivery, the containers are transported via a
conveyor to the load station, where they are
stacked onto dollies in manageable despatch
towers. When empty, these can be folded up,
resulting in a 75% volume reduction during
return transport. This saves space and money.

Standardized returnable containers
for car production
The flows of goods between car manufacturers and suppliers have
become considerably more complex due to increased integration and
the trend to supply components. Also, the clearly increased number of
components used in the overall manufacturing process of cars requires
the use of additional load carriers.
It is no different between the BMW Group and their supplier Knipping
Verbindungstechnik, a specialist in the development, manufacture
and sales of fixings. The company employs 530 people at its Western
European locations and generates an annual turnover 90 million .
Besides high-quality products, BMW relies on Knipping for cost-optimized
logistical solutions.
Accurately filling containers using a modern
10-point weighing device
With the min-load container KLT series from SSI SCHAEFER a returnable
transport system is being used that has been specially designed and
optimized for the flow of materials in goods transport between suppliers
and car manufacturers. The series consists of standardized containers
which can be used for manual and automatic handling of order-picking,
interim storage, as well as for supplying the assembly line. The system
sets uniform standards with regard to ergonomics, dimensions, design,
material, handling and identification. The smooth, single-wall construction
guarantees a high useable volume and facilitates cleaning, but is
nevertheless robust and offers a high degree of transport security. All
container sizes can be stacked together on Euro pallets. Top cover lids
are optional.

Würth Industrie Service
Growth through logistics
C-parts in manageable returnable containers
The global trade in fittings and assembly material is the core
business of the Würth Group. The subsidiary Würth Industrie
Service GmbH & Co. KG was established in 1999 to supply
the industrial sector quicker, smoother and on a just-in-time
basis with the required products.
As a supplier of systems, Würth Industrie Service GmbH
& Co. KG and its nearly 1,300 suppliers make sure that
the acquisition of parts and deliveries to more than
8,000 customers meet the deadlines. At the same time,
the routine processes for purchasing, logistics and quality
assurance are streamlined. This is achieved by keeping an
average of 150,000 products in stock in their warehouse,
ranging from screws to work gloves. The current storage
area of 35,000 qm has been designed with continuous
expansion of capacity in mind.
In order to carry out this logistical masterpiece economically
and efficiently, the use of a scanner-supported shelving and
order-picking system is an essential component.
SSI SCHAEFER plays an important role as partner in this.
Depending on the product and the inventory, different
shelving systems are available, from which the orders are
manually transferred directly to the Kanban containers. For
this, the special design LF and R-KLT container series from
SSI SCHAEFER are used. The empty containers and the
applied bar codes are the medium that triggers the order.
In the preparation area of the despatch department, goods
from the warehouse arrive, which are organized onto the
shelving system, along with the empty Kanban containers
that have returned from the clients. The loading process
begins with reading the bar codes, which contain all
information about the type of product and the quantity.
Interim buffer storage of the goods in the SCS (SCHAEFER Carousel System)
18
Order-picking according to client order
Following this, an order-picking note is printed immediately. This
accompanies the Kanban containers via the conveyer belts to the buffer
warehouse. The goods are then order-picked and weighed on automatic
scales. The weighing protocol and an additional visual inspection reduce
the number of errors to a minimum. Upon request of the client, Würth
employees will deliver the full LF and R-KLT containers directly to the
client’s assembly area and take care of a smooth container exchange.

Aloys F. Dornbracht GmbH & Co. KG
Faster deliveries in containers
From semi-finished to finished products
in multi-functional containers
The automatic warehouse is the heart of the
optimization process for the overall material flow
and production process control at Dornbracht,
the leading international manufacturer of highquality bathroom fittings and accessories. The
classic method of production into a finished
goods warehouse was replaced by a Kanban
system as a result of increasing product variety.
To improve the flow of material, returnable
containers from SSI SCHAEFER were introduced.
The selected multi-functional containers (MF
containers) made from hard-wearing polypropylene
run quietly and securely on all sections of the
conveyer belt. Currently, nearly 100,000
containers are being used for storage, transport,
order-picking and production. The flow rate
of containers is controlled and monitored
via bar code labels that have been applied
at SSI SCHAEFER.
The returnable transport system is made
available to Dornbracht suppliers free of charge,
loaded with semi-finished products according to
specifications and transported to Dornbracht.
To ensure that the end products can be manu
factured at Dornbracht just-in-time, the semifinished products needed for further processing
must be constantly available. After the semifinished products have been plated, they are
temporarily stored in the automatic buffer
warehouse – just like the purchased parts
delivered in containers – and taken out again
when required for assembly. Finally, the endproduct is loaded back into the corresponding
multi-functional container and sent to the
finished-product warehouse, where the goods are
picked directly from the container and put into
the despatch cartons.
This change has enormous advantages for
Dornbracht: a reduction of the time to market
for standard products and custom designs,
smaller stocks and a considerable increase in
productivity in all production stages.
The rough components that have not yet been plated are delivered
to Dornbracht by the suppliers in SSI SCHAEFER containers
