Testi consigliati Harris D. C., Bertolucci M. D. ECTS LABEL IN INGLESE: Title of the course: Spectroscopy and synthesis of inorganic compounds Credits: 6 Lecturers: Cristiana Di Valentin e Maurizio Bruschi Checking knowledge and understanding: performing exercises on the topics of the course Examination: written reports on the practical part of the course and oral examination Aims: The Course is aimed at providing the students with the fundaments of spectroscopy applied to inorganic compounds (in particular coordination compounds and inorganic solids), in terms of symmetry properties and group theory to fully understand the origin of selection rules. The Course is organized in three parts: lectures, experimental assignments where the student will face some illustrative examples of the synthesis of inorganic compounds and their spectroscopic characterization, and computational assignments where the student will carry out calculations of these spectroscopic properties using computational methods. CORSO DI LAUREA MAGISTRALE IN SCIENZE E TECNOLOGIE CHIMICHE Main topics Use of the Group Theory in optical and magnetic spectroscopies. Character Tables. Selection rules in infrared and electronic spectroscopies. Electron paramagnetic resonance. Normal modes of vibration (infrared spectrum), electronic transitions (optical UV-vis spectrum), magnetic properties (electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy). Fundaments of the theory for the calculation of these properties (density functional theory). The course will be supported by lab experimental and computational assignments covering several aspects of the synthesis of inorganic compounds, their spectroscopic characterization and the calculation of spectroscopic properties using computational methods. Suggested textbooks Harris D. C., Bertolucci M. D. Symmetry and Spectroscopy. Notes from the lecturer.
