Scienze e Tecnologie informatiche della Libera Università di Bolzano.
Note Biografiche e Posizioni Ricoperte
Nato a Treviso il 20 maggio del 1968.
Nel luglio 1994 ho conseguito la laurea in Scienze dell’Informazione presso l’Università degli Studi di Udine con voto 110/110 e lode. Il titolo della tesi è Studio
di Algoritmi ed Implementazione di un Sistema per Logiche Descrittive, relatori
Enrico Franconi e Luca Console. La tesi di laurea è stata condotta presso l’istituto
di ricerca IRST di Povo (TN).
Da settembre 1995 a dicembre 1998 ho lavorato presso la Scientific Computing
Section dell’International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) di Trieste con un
contratto di visiting scientist.
Nel maggio 2001 Ho conseguito il dottorato di ricerca (PhD) presso la University
of Manchester (UK). Il titolo della tesi è Questions and answers: reasoning and
querying in Description Logic, relatori Ian Horrocks e Graham Gough.
Da febbraio 2001 a maggio 2002 ho lavorato come ricercatore a contratto (Research Associate) presso il dipartimento di Computer Science della University of
Manchester.
Da maggio 2002 a ottobre 2002 sono stato ricercatore (Lecturer) presso il Computation Department di UMIST (Manchester, UK).
Da novembre 2002 a settembre 2003 sono stato ricercatore a contratto (Research Associate) presso la Facoltà di Scienze e Tecnologie informatiche della Libera
Università di Bolzano.

Attività di Ricerca Scientifica
Knowledge Representation La rappresentazione della conoscenza basata su formalismi logici è
stato un tema dominante dei miei studi. Durante la tesi di laurea ho studiato
ed implementato un sistema di ragionamento automatico basato sulle Logiche Descrittive (DL) [2, 3]. La ricerca in questo campo è continuata durante il dottorato,
in cui mi sono concentrato sul problema di rappresentare ed interrogare basi di
conoscenza che includano conoscenza estensionale (oggetti) oltre a quella intenzionale [10, 15]. La mia ricerca coinvolge sia gli aspetti teorici che quelli applicativi,
riguardanti l’uso e implementazione di sistemi di ragionamento automatico [4].
Information Access I Formalismi basati su DL sono un eccellente strumento per l’accesso intelligente a sorgenti d’informazione; siano queste basi di dati tradizionali o altre

sorgenti di dati (web sites, object oriented repositories, etc.). La mia ricerca ha
spaziato in questa direzione contribuendo nelle aree di query containment under constraints, modellazione concettuale e supporto all’interrogazione di sorgenti
d’informazione mediata da ontologie [7, 17]. In questi ambiti contribuisco attivamente al sistema ICOM (http://www.inf.unibz.it/∼franconi/icom/), ed i
risultati nel supporto all’interrogazione sono dimostrati nel contesto del progetto
SeWAsIE [20].
Semantic Web
Il Semantic Web (SW) è attualmente un tema trainante della ricerca nell’ambito
rappresentazione della conoscenza. Le mie competenze in quest’ambito mi hanno
permesso di contribuire nelle aree dell’interrogazione e modellazione concettuale
(ontology engineering) [13]. I miei contributi sono di natura fondazionale; nello
studio formale di linguaggi di rappresentazione nell’ambito del SW [21]. Tuttavia, nell’ottica di coniugare ricerca teorica e applicazioni della stessa, partecipo
a gruppi di lavoro W3C. In particolare quello per la definizione di standards per
l’interrogazione di sistemi per il SW (Data Access Working Group), ed il gruppo
di lavoro Rule Interchange Format (RIF) volto alla definizione di standards per
l’interscambio di regole.
