As Ettore Sottsass said, “a designer must realise that objects can become the utensils in an existential ritual”. This is one reason why, starting on Thursday, April 14, Il Sole 24 ORE will publish a weekly series of twenty monographs edited by internationally renowned designer Andrea Branzi focusing on the Masters of Design. From Gio Ponti to Alvar Aalto, via Franco Albini, Marco Zanuso and Philippe Stark: each volume includes an introductory essay offering the key to interpretation of the designers’ career; an atlas of objects visually going over all the stages in their career; drawings revealing the ideas inspiring the designs; thoughts, in texts and interviews by the designers; criticism I MAESTRI DEL DESIGN and an essential bibliography for finding out more. The first volume in the “I Maestri del Design” series (available at the newsstand for 4.90 euro in addition to the price of the newspaper), produced with the help of Cassina and Ferrarelle, focuses on Gio Ponti and is written by Fulvio Irace. Ponti (famous as the architect who built the Pirelli Tower in Milan) designed all kinds of objects for a great variety of uses, from stage sets to light fixtures, chairs, kitchens and the interiors of great ocean liners. In 1928 he founded Domus magazine to do battle on two fronts: the battle “against the fake antique” and the battle, “yet to be won, against the ugly and modern”. www.ilsole24ore.com/imaestrideldesign w VMZINC®, Segnare il proprio tempo Senza segnare l’ambiente Umicore Building Products Italia S.r.l. via Riccardo Lombardi, 19/16 20153 Milano Tel. On the top of a small hill near the town of Alba stands the Ampelion, originally a typical rural farmhouse. The old building has been completely renewed to contain classrooms, offices and multi-purpose rooms for the Consortium for the Protection of Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe and Roero. The project represents an excellent reconciliation of the requirements of renovation of the existing part of the building, in which all the frames have been replaced, with the addition of new glass doors at the entrances and a new roof transforming the inner courtyard into an indoor hall. The presence of large glass surfaces did not prevent achievement of high levels of Implementation date: 2006 Progettista — Designer: arch. The façade and roof structure were made using the Jansen Viss Basic TVS system, with horizontal weight-bearing elements of painted steel, glass infill in the upper part and a specially designed trolley to permit maintenance and cleaning of the plates of glass. The Viss Basic TVS system for vertical walls and inclined roofs permits, as in the case in point, construction of modular units which combine perfectly with their context. The profiles in the catalogue may be combined or overlapped with tubular or flat profiles thanks to use of an innovative continuous laser welding technology permitting creation of customised solutions. The opening vertical frames are made with steel profiles in the Jansen Economy 50 series. The utmost versatility is guaranteed in both systems, also when it comes to finishes, not only in terms of colours but also of finishes: texturised, acid-etched, metallic, etc. Protection against atmospheric agents, careful control of variations in temperature due to the climate outside, acoustic insulation to ensure the wellbeing of the people who live in the building and limitation of energy consumption: these are the features required of top quality cladding, correctly designed and built. Rockwool specialises in production of rock wool, an eco-compatible material, all over the world and has developed high performance cladding products and solutions over the years. Construction of efficient wrappers for buildings insulated with rock wool makes it possible to ensure high levels of thermal and acoustic comfort and optimal fire protection without sacrificing aesthetic and architectural requirements. One example is the Energy Park in Vimercate (MB), which employs a ventilated façade system with corrugated steel external cladding, partially perforated, with an Aluzinc® finish. To guarantee thermal and acoustic comfort indoors, the building is insulated with a double layer of medium density Rockwool panels which, thanks to their important feature of incombustibility, guarantee compliance with the Ministry of the Interior’s requirements for fire safety in façades. Another important project involved renovation of an industrial building for conversion into a hotel: the “Monza e Brianza Palace” Hotel, where the design specified a combination of ventilated façade and thermal cladding, assigning priority to acoustic and aesthetic comfort. The choice allowed the hotel to meet the requirements of energy class B, with an annual consumption of around 33 KWh/m3. The International Legno|Bau Forum, a very important opportunity for people working in the industry to meet and discuss the latest trends and developments in Italy and all over the world, was held in Italy for the first time on March 18, during Legno & Edilizia. The Forum focused on the growing importance of wooden constructions, which are now capable of offering ultrahigh standards of sustainability and energy conservation, and their future horizons. Hot issues include the phenomenon of social housing, the new frontier in multi-storey buildings, and international construction regulations and certification programmes. In the field of multi-storey wooden buildings, it has been demonstrated that today’s technologies can overcome many limitations that seemed impossible hurdles only a few years ago. For in recent years wooden constructions have become taller and taller, and multi-storey buildings are no longer made exclusively out of concrete. Studies conducted with intensive criteria in the areas of fire protection and construction physics have permitted construction of numerous multi-storey wooden buildings, and the potential for optimisation of these technologies has not yet been fully exploited. The last presentation was by architect Gerardo Sannella of Chapman Taylor Architects, who emphasised that the aesthetic and poetic power of this material, which is also highly competitive, speaks a language that is simple but laden with meaning. The Forum was promoted by Holz/ Bau Forum of Garmisch and sponsored by Assolegno of FederlegnoArredo, EOS Alto Adige and a number of key players in the industry including the Rubner Group. www.forum-holzbau.com/verona/verona_index_de.html www.rubner.com 14 ANTE: ARKETIPO – S MODELLI SUPERIORI — SUPERIOR MODELS DI EFFICIENZA OF EFFICIENCY La manifestazione Solar Decathlon è un concorso tra gruppi universitari di varie parti del mondo. The Solar Decathlon is a competition between university groups from various parts of the world. The final location is Madrid and this is the first time the Solar Decathlon Europe has been held, though the initiative originated in the US Department of Energy. Inoltre, spesso per il li- The competition had a few simple but very precise goals, and they were formulated in a way that permitted clear assessment of the value of the participating projects, even by a public made up of non-specialists with an interest in energy issues. Essentially, the aim was to educate both competition entrants and the public about use of solar technologies and encourage evolution of awareness toward higher levels of energy efficiency. In addition, the participating designers are encouraged to work towards effective technological innovation both in the specific field of renewable energy and in construction technologies in general, always in relation to energy issues. Last but not least, the goals identify users’ wellbeing as a value that definitely requires support and must never be jeopardised as a result of technological policies. These goals consistently resulted in five categories proposed for judgement and selection of the winners: • architecture and construction technology • solar systems and the energy balance • wellness and applications • social and economic aspects • strategies for innovation and sustainability 17 groups of designers from major universities in France, Germany, Spain, Great Britain, the US, China and Finland participated. In political terms, the competition’s organisation and the results obtained recognise the university’s ability to promote and develop substantial innovation. The results are important and encouraging. First of all, because the vast, rich, particularly welldocumented participation in the competition provides a cross section of trends in technological innovation today for all players on the market to see. And beyond this, because of the great interest in many of the proposals SOLAR DECATHLON ANTE Luukku House Helsinki University Of Technology, Finland Bamboo House Tongij University Shanghai, China 15 TEXT GIUSEPPE TURCHINI SD Europe SD Europe EDITOR vello di grande interesse delle proposte sviluppate, che risultano fortemente innovative, in qualche modo tutte realizzabili, alla stregua di veri prototipi sollecitanti, ma non provocatori. If we look at the results from the outside and after the fact, we get the impression that the most interesting aspects to emerge from the solutions presented refer to the construction technology and architectural design rather than to specific solar technologies. Most of the participants do not seem to have made a particular effort to seek out new solar technologies or make obvious improvements to existing ones. They often made use of well-known technologies, integrating solar collectors and photovoltaic systems in innovative forms of architecture. In other words, the first of the categories listed, architecture and technological innovation, seems to dominate over the others. This fact is highly positive and justifies the value we assign to the event in this publication. It is the concept of design that must first of all solve problems including energy, like any other aspect of architecture. Technical devices and systems are welcome, and sometimes indispensable; but they are not really useful unless they are part of well-designed, well-planned project. How many times have we wondered about the fact that the features of the building designed, its typological and distributional character, have an influence on its energy performance. The results of the competition provide an exemplary response: design must be systemic, it must be integrated to the point that the simultaneously thinking of the building’s way of being, way of being built and way of being lived in generates true innovation in architecture. 16 ARKETIPO – S SOLAR DECATHLON: L’OLIMPIADE DELLA PROGETTAZIONE — SOLAR DECATHLON: THE OLYMPICS OF DESIGN SAGGIO: WWW.SDEUROPE.ORG TEXT GABRIELE LOBACCARO MICHELE SAUCHELLI A U.S. Department of Energy initiative founded in 1999, the Solar Decathlon is the Olympic Games for universities in the field of design and construction of energy self-sufficient prototypes powered by solar energy. The competition, first held in 2002 when more than 100,000 visitors came from all over the world, is named after the way the prototypes are assessed on the basis of ten criteria, each measured according to specific requirements. The first edition, held on the National Mall in Washington D.C., attracted 14 teams from the United States and Porto Rico. The winning team was Boulders from the University of Colorado. In 2005, 18 universities entered the competition thanks to the participation of other countries such as Spain and Canada. The Boulders team and the team from Denver won again. In 2007, 20 teams participated, and the competition was won by the German team from Technische Universitat Darmstadt, which won again in 2009. In view of growing interest in the event in many European universities, it was decided that a separate Solar Decathlon Europe competition would be held alternating with the American competition, maintaining the event’s international character by holding every other edition in Europe. In 2010, Solar Decathlon Europe was held in Madrid’s Proyecto Madrid Rio district. The competition area, called the Solar Village, covered both banks of the Manzaranes River in a 30.000 m2. The University of Virginia won with its Lumenhaus prototype. Starting in 2013 the event will also be held in Beijing, China. A TECHNICAL AND SOCIAL EVENT Solar Decathlon is not just a competition but an open-air laboratory leading to construction of life-sized models of buildings. An essential element of the event, and of the scientific and cultural movement characteristing it, is ongoing stimulating dialogue between specialists, researchers and technicians in the field. The spirit of constant cultural enrichment is clearly expressed in the installations in the Solar Village: people can see and find out about the innovations introduced by use of renewable resources in everyday life. Encouraging the community to discover the new technologies developed thanks to interaction between university researchers and enterprises is one of the event’s key goals. The prototypes built are solar houses that draw benefits from use of renewable resources only, demonstrating that it is possible to build a self-sufficient home without sacrificing the inhabitants’ comfort. The opportunity to test new materials and innovative technological solutions also attracts numerous companies which see the Solar Decathlon as an opportunity to try out their products, financing some of the projects presented. The result is creation of the ideal context for a profitable exchange of know-how and cooperation between university researchers and industry, not only as a marketing operation but to produce advanced components for improving technical and energy performance. In this context, the team’s multidisciplinary skills are an essential condition for achieving a high level of design, construction and performance, worthy of a competition of this calibre. THE TEN TRIALS The ten assessment criteria are grouped into five categories, each of which has an intermediate score for an admissible total of 1000 points. The categories involve all aspects of design: from architecture to use of renewable energy, from engineering and manufacture of the construction to its energy balance, communications and sustainability, on the basis of specific requirements (view the table in the opposite page). THE CONTEST The competition involves monitoring of the prototypes with a system of sensors permitting real time supervision of the tests conducted. The sensors employed provide information on various different parameters: ambient temperature, relative humidity, lighting levels, air quality, electricity consumption, generation of solar energy etc. The teams and the judges can view data on each house at any time of day, compare statistics and update scores and rankings. There are several benefits to use of this approach to judge the projects in the competition: the objective nature and instant speed of processing the data measured by the sensors and collected in a database; the dependability of a system that collects data and makes the necessary calculations automatically; the security of a double data acquisition system with an internal memory for backing up information. In the 20 days during which the Solar Village is open to the public, a number of tests which are particularly clear even to non-experts are conducted to measure and then compare the efficiency of one prototype with respect to another: for example, a competition is held to compare the distance travelled by electric cars charged with the energy produced by a prototype in one day; or a buffet is held for guests, judged not only on the basis of the quality of the food, but on the basis of the amount of energy used to prepare it. A landmark event in technical and scientific project engineering and design, capable of combining the academics’ knowledge with the knowhow of industry and research, a world-wide benchmark for experts in the field and an opportunity for socio-cultural exchange: the Solar Decathlon is all this and more! ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES OF THE PROTOTYPE To encourage maximum use of passive solar gain systems, the project area has been increased to 150 m2 with a useable surface area of minimum 45 and maximum 70 m2. This ensures that the participating teams will be able to include greenhouses, internal patios and pergolas or arcades. On the basis of the same criterion, the maximum admissible height of the buildings has been increased to permit more flexible design: this means houses can be built on two levels in all or part of the home, creating rooms on different levels or with different heights. The Med in Italy team includes teachers and students from the faculties of Architecture, Economics and Engineering at Università di Roma TRE and industrial design students from Sapienza University, also in Rome. The project’s roots lie in the tradition of the southern Mediterranean, where it is equally important to provide shelter from the heat as from the cold, if not more important. The combined need requires a variable configuration and management, particularly in summer, when buildings must be cut off from exchanging heat with the outdoors during the day and opened up to maximise ventilation at night. For this purpose a wrapper system has been designed which: - absorbs climatic shocks to reduce energy dispersion - promotes energy gain through use of photovoltaic systems - is made habitable with intermediate buffer zones - can change its set-up to adapt to seasonal and daily variations in climate This behaviour makes it a “living” organism, organised primarily into two parts: - an internal part with an inertial mass in direct contact with the indoor space, permitting accumulation of heat during the day. The mass acts as a thermal wheel in both summer and winter - an external part characterised by an insulating layer separated from the internal wrapper by a film of air, making it possible to insulate the building from cold in winter and from the sun in summer. This second wrapper covers the entire building, particularly the roof. In the air gap between the insulating part and the massive part of the wrapper, ventilation is activated in summer to cool down the mass and convey heat that accumulates during day outside, while in winter the heat is directed into the building. In buildings in locations which are not very cold in winter, the roof Casadei, Fieri Nel 2012, per la prima volta, un team universitario italiano parteciperà a Solar Decathlon Europe. Perciò, Med in Italy è progettata sulla base di un modulo costruttivo formato da elementi prefabbricati bidimensionali e tridimensionali trasportabili con mezzi stradali standard, che permettono un rapido assemblaggio in molteplici configurazioni. is mobile, worked via a building management system, sliding along the outside walls of the external space, freeing the internal mass of thermal insulation and permitting release of heat accumulated during the day directly outside. At the same time, this solution shelters the garden from humidity at night, making it more comfortable for use. The inertial mass and the insulating material are included in a lightweight wrapper system which is industrially produced and transported to the construction site. The wrapper consists of interwoven formworks which are reinforced with wooden structures and filled with loose inert material from the construction site. The interweave makes the “container” transparent, leaving the filling material in view so that the building fits in with its surroundings chromatically. The external cladding forms a continuous barrier providing thermal protection and eliminating thermal bridges. For the purposes of competition, the Med house in Italy is designed as an independent living unit, while should therefore be viewed as a cell in a larger complex involving construction of minimum living units which may be expanded (horizontal and vertical aggregations), built around compact kitchen/bathroom blocks, destined to house different types of users (housing agglomerates in tourist towns, emergency and temporary homes). Therefore Med in Italy is designed on the basis of a construction unit made up of two-dimensional and three-dimensional construction elements, which may be transported on standard trucks to permit rapid assembly in a variety of different configurations. Lumenhaus is the prototype which won the first edition of the Solar Decathlon Europe (arriving 13th in the US edition of 2009) and it includes the synthesis of architecture and engineering. It pays tribute to Farnsworth by Mies Van Der Rohe, which was the inspiration for the Virginia team, and it declares a precise identity already with its name “Lumen” – the power of light – combined with Haus with a clear reference to the Bauhaus movement. The manic search for the use of natural light within the internal space has been the main objective of the project. The completely automated sliding doors on the north and south allow natural light to enter in large quantity. The internal effect created by the steel circular tongues on the external layer of the system is a group of thin and dancing shadows which project on the floor’s level. When the screens are open the inside and the outside blend in a continuous transition which is capable of being adapted to the changing users’ requirements almost doubling the surface available and creating a physical and psychological connection with the outside. The 75 m2 of free flow rectangular space make practicality, comfort and flexibility the main characteristics of the project: the central island, which includes the bathroom, creates a physical barrier between public and private spaces, however thanks to the movement of the sliding doors, it is possible to guarantee a great spatial flexibility. The control of energy use can be managed remotely, by a domotic system. All the technological elements that compose the prototype have been studied following an integrated approach for a high user comfort, automatically being adapted to the environmental changes and ensuring a high energy saving. L’uso della luce naturale nello spazio interno è stato l’obiettivo principale del progetto The use of natural light within the internal space has been the main objective of the project PROGETTI LUMENHAUS VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE IL POTERE DELLA LUCE — THE POWER OF LIGHT ZOOM 1: Completamente autosufficiente e capace autonomamente di bilanciare l’efficienza energetica con il comfort degli utenti grazie a una stazione meteorologica interna, Lumenhaus è un’abitazione a consumo energetico nullo alimentata interamente dal sole. Lumenhaus is a residence with zero energy usage and its energy is supplied by the sun making it completely self-sufficient and independently capable of balancing energy efficiency with users’ comfort thanks to an internal climatic station. The 45 double-faced photovoltaic modules installed on the roof use on one hand the solar captivation while ensuring a production up to 30% higher than traditional modules. The electricity in excess is re-injected in the national grid or used as power supply for electrical cars. The brise-soleil integrated in the automated facades are composed of stainless steel panels perforated with laser beams: the circles, which present different diameters, are inward folded with different angles to allow the entrance of rays of light. The rear translucent layer, obtained with polycarbonate panels filled with aerogel, acts like thermal insulation. The light stored during the day is released by a LED system allowing a low-energy lighting provision. The choice of certified appliances and of recycled materials demonstrates the attention and sensitivity towards environmental topics. A geothermal system with low enthalpy for radiant heating, a system to use rainwater and to treat and re-use sewage waters with a series of bio-filter tanks for the recycle of non-potable water complete this pilot scheme. 39 ARKETIPO – S Virginia Polytechnic Institute 40 Le schermature integrate nelle facciate automatizzate sono costituite da pannelli di acciaio inossidabile traforato con tagli laser The screening panels integrated in the automated facades are constituted by laser-perforated stainless steel panels SD Europe Sequenza del montaggio: struttura di acciaio, pannelli radianti a pavimento e la copertura, chiusure esterne, arredi interni, schermature solari esterne, pannelli termici e fotovoltaici Installation sequence: the steel structure, the floor radiant panels and roof, the external enclosures, internal furniture, external solar screens, thermal and photovoltaic panels 1 41 Sezione verticale della chiusura esterna. The project for the prototype of the solar house called Ikaros starts from the commitment of creating a flexible space capable of adapting to each requirement of the users. The volume composed of 4 modules that can compose three different spaces uses in an ideal way the 74 m2 available surface. It is possible to move from a lay out with living and kitchen in plain sight to another one with dining table for eight people and workstation or with the opportunity of having a guest bed, a dining table for four people and a double bedroom. The project’s theme is the open, mutating and free space; it is however possible to compose in any moment private spaces to sleep or work. This is translated in a great freedom of use of the internal space as a response to the compositional and constructive modularity. The facade is the element that gives to the building its distinctive character and it not only allows the optimum use of natural light, but also provides visual protection and solar screening. The system is a foldable structure which in its maximum extension has a rhomboidal shape and it creates continuous effects of lights and shadows that change depending on the time of the day and on the season. This external skin, that can be regularly adjusted, allows the users to create mutating scenarios for the different positions of the sun generating in this way a facade that is never the same. During the day, a spectacular light show invades the internal spaces of the building and, at night, the inside is reflected outside by the artificial light. The timber is the main construction material used on the project and it is completely recyclable and reusable. The furniture has been made with light construction panels to guarantee its flexibility and facilitate the multi-functional use. Ikaros is defined as an “energy plus” house because it generates four times more energy than its average requirement; it also does not create emissions and it capable of producing energy with the only contribution of the sun. The photovoltaic system on the roof produces 16.500 kWh per year of which only 4300 kWh are used as supply for the house creating an effective excess of 12.200 kWh. The compensation of electricity injected in the network is about 4600 euro/year. This limited energy use is facilitated by the compact volume, by the ideal orientation, by the reduction of heat losses, by the use of passive strategies, by the high energy performance building services components and by the integration with energy production systems. The envelop is highly insulated and air tight thanks to the vacuum insulated panels, triple glazing and a special tape around the edges of the modules. The cooling of the internal air is carried out both via the radiant exchange during the night between the water sprayed by nozzles on the roof and the sky and by a system of channels composed of phase changing materials (PCM) used as latent heat accumulators. The automated building control, which can be activated via a touch-down panel, provides information on the energy available at any time. Even if this prototype is still under development the cost has been estimated in the region of 2500 euro/m2, which can be translated in a sale price of 185.000 euros. 45 Oliver Pausch 46 Il rivestimento metallico a fasce romboidali The metallic cladding with rhomboidal bands Rosenheim University Oliver Pausch Prospetto e sezione verticale della schermatura esterna. The construction of a compact and highly insulated volume and with a greatly reduced ratio between the surface and the cladding also capable of ensuring adequate comfort levels throughout the year in hot and dry weather has been made possible by the combination of new technologies with energy saving passive strategies. The project, developed over a 74 m2 area, is constituted by wooden modular elements with high energy performance and assembled off site to facilitate the transport and installation. The residence is composed of 4 modules with interspaces which are used for lighting and ventilation. The key element of the project is the interspace called “energy tower”. It is based on traditional passive control principles and it is a fundamental element for energy control, the volumetric characterisation and the division of the internal space. The modules are entirely covered on the east and west by photovoltaic elements while the interspaces, which externally house small gardens, are screened by adjustable brise-soleil. The external architectural image reflect the functional characterisation of the internal space divided into zones. The south facing terrace and the living-dining area module can be used as a single large space for parties or events thanks to large glazed openings. The other modules, separated by the energy tower, incorporate the bedrooms and the services area (kitchen, entrance and bathroom) which are located in the east part. The constructive and compositional modularity is also translated in an operational flexibility. Using the same base modules it is possible to create living and work spaces for single individuals, couples or families. The furniture has been studied to make the spaces more usable: the appliances have been arranged in line and integrated with the envelop on one single side. Volumetric compactness and high thermal insulation have lead to an energy control strategy based on the priority of use of passive sub-systems. These include the activation of the thermal mass of phase changing materials integrated in the ceilings and the ventilation tower. The height and orientation of the tower have been studied on the basis of the north-south prevailing wind. The central part cools the internal air without any mechanical control: when wind speed is sufficiently high, the external air is channelled in the tower, cooled via a descending air flow and injected in the house via a vaporisation process. The areas on the left and right of the tower are used as solar chimneys to expel exhaust air. The architectural image is characterised by 7 modules of stratified glass with gold and bronze polycrystalline photovoltaic cells (3 kWp each) on the east and west elevations. Two different modules have instead been installed on the roof: 12 polycrystalline (1.5 kWp) on the sides and 12 black monocrystalline (5 kWp) in the middle. The thermal solar system in constituted by collectors made of evacuated tubes (with an overall surface of 6.6 m2) and it is installed on the roof and connected to a 300 l storage tank via an internal heat exchanger. Finally, a reversible heat pump provides heat during the winter and cooling during the summer via an active radiant flooring. 51 HTF Stuttgart ARKETIPO – S HTF Stuttgart I pannelli di vetro stratificato con celle fotovoltaiche policristalline di color oro e bronzo The stratified glass panels with gold and bronze polycrystalline cells HTF Stuttgart 52 Schema di funzionamento e immagine della torre di ventilazione Scheme for the operation and image of the ventilation tower 54 ARKETIPO – S LUUKKU HOUSE — HELSINKI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, FINLAND WWW.SDFINLAND.COM Use of timber and of products from the local industries, installation partially carried out in the factory and partially in-situ, considered lay-out: these are the ingredients for the first zero carbon residence in Finland. The first suggestion that comes to mind when looking at the building completed by the Finnish team is that of a snowy forest landscape with snow: in line with the Nordic tradition the house establishes with the surroundings (ideally with the surrounding nature) a deep and concrete connection. The objective of the competition of realising the first residence in Finland with zero energy balance moves through the concretisation of an icon of the “made in Finland” while promoting a massive use of timber and of those products coming from the local industries. The use of natural, ecological and recyclable materials has allowed to create an architecture that minimises the environmental impact during the entire lifecycle of the building (“from cradle to grave”). To reduce the environmental impact generated by the transport and installation operations the building has been divided into two volume. For each volumes the structural parts have been assembled off site and they are composed of LVL (laminated veneer lumber) wooden panels, the plant components and finishes have also been assembled off site. The external finishing panels have been added in situ and they are composed of timber frames with cellulose fibres insulation and they stiffen the load-bearing structure via mechanical connections to the rear frame. The internal lay out optimises the energy balance with the exception of the north elevation, which is particularly compact; on the other three elevations the large windows use the free winter solar gains while during the summer, thanks to the shape of the building, they are protected from direct radiation. Luukku House has been designed for extreme weathers like an adiabatic volume capable of positively responding to the challenges posed by the external climate. The building is zero energy for the Finnish weather, while it would produce an energy surplus for the Mediterranean climate such as in Madrid. The energy is produced by 59 m2 of photovoltaic modules integrated with the roof and by 4 m2 of thermal solar panels. The envelope is made of natural materials and it presents excellent values of thermal transmittance (vertical enclosure: U = 0.1 W/m2K; lower and roof floors U = 0.08 W/m2K) thanks to the thickness of the thermal insulation made of cellulose fibres. The transparent enclosures are composed of low emission insulated windows with quadruple glass (U = 0.3 W/m2K): to eliminate the thermal break created by the low-insulated frames the windows have been installed directly on top of the LVL structural panels. An innovative internal timber finish has been studied and it uses the natural hygroscopicity of the material while allowing to control the variations of the internal relative humidity and to avoid the use of an intermediate vapour barrier. The reduction of energy requirements for the air conditioning system is further assisted by the installation on the inside of the perimeter enclosures of finished gypsum sheets with the integration of PCM (Phase Changing) materials which are capable of lowering the energy peaks while absorbing and releasing heat to the environment. The air conditioning system is composed of a highefficiency air-air heat pump, of a heat recovery system for exhaust air and by a drying vent. Lukku House can therefore be considereded a housing model for future constructionsin Northern Europe. The concept at the base of Re Focus is to think the sustainable living as a new objective. The team Florida has in this way launched a message to their fellow nationals showing how it is possible to reduce polluting emissions while creating buildings that reflect the residential tradition and that require small initial investments. The project is based on modularity and formal simplicity and it refers to the Florida traditional rural houses (cracker house) while reinterpreting with a modern twist the patio and the permeable envelope. The volume, which has the shape of a compact parallelepiped, minimises the formal ratio opening up on the north and south elevations. The various areas within the residence are arranged across the large external central corridor which, being oriented on the base of the main breezes, allows to take advantage of the natural ventilation to facilitate the comfort conditions during the intermediate seasons. The idea of modularity allows to personalise the building with regards to dimensions, colours and materials. The larger windows are located on the north using glazed mobile partitions so to provide an ideal lighting level without creating additional thermal loads during the summer season. A system of timber mobile screens allows to create privacy inside the residence. The construction system is very simple and economical: a steel profiles frame and a stiffening system made of SIP panels (Structural insulated panels) which provide a structural function and integrate the thermal insulation. Re Focus is therefore not only an iconic building but a reproducible residential model which is also economical and implementable. The central corridor (called dog trot) is the crucial point of the energy strategies in Re Focus and it uses the main winds and facilitates the natural ventilation to air condition the rooms without using energy. The perimeter enclosures area composed of structural panels (SIP) with an insulated polyurethane layer inside and an external ventilated cladding. To reduce drastically the cost of the project the domestic water heating system operates with a heat pump that takes thermal energy from the internal air to give it back to the water. In this way the electricity consumption for the production of hot water is reduced to a minimum and the thermal load in the summer in the night area diminishes significantly. The union between tradition and innovation, between nature and technology takes shape in Bamboo House, a building with zero energy balance and with a careful reference to the vernacular Chinese architecture. The open courtyard layout creates a continuous relation between the internal and external environments and between man and nature. The typical curved roof (Fan yu) is not only reinterpreted giving a bigger impetus to the building’s morphology but at the same time searches for an harmonious relation between the built environment and the context while trying to optimise the production rate of the integrate photovoltaic system as well as the internal natural ventilation. Bamboo, economical and available material in China, is here used in various ways from load-bearing structural element to external finish to flooring for the internal area. The upside-down L-shaped layout allows to the bedroom to open up towards the south and the intern courtyard as well as allowing the living area to be in relation between the courtyard and the outside. Two filter zones, one on the west of the building and one at north-east, allow to shade the glazed openings from the direct solar radiation and they create a transition zone between the inside and the outside in line with continuous dialectic of the Tao philosophy. The spirit of nature and harmony is explained using organic forms and natural materials. The Bamboo is proposed as a material that can be “industrialised”: its natural lack of homogeneity is overcome using connection and anchoring systems as well as steel banding therefore proposing a construction model that can be reproduced and standardised. Once more the Chinese philosophy of the dialogue between man and nature is proposed again under new forms. Il bambù, materiale economico, viene usato come elemento strutturale portante, rivestimento esterno e pavimentazione degli ambienti interni The bamboo, which is an economical material, is used as load-bearing structural material as well as external cladding and internal flooring PROGETTI BAMBOO HOUSE TONGJI UNIVERSITY SHANGHAI IL FAN YU TECNOLOGICO — THE TECHNOLOGICAL FAN YU ZOOM 1: Nella Bamboo House la copertura curva rappresenta l’elemento base per la produzione di energia e per l’ottimizzazione del comportamento energetico. In Bamboo house the curved roof represents the fundamental element for energy production and for the optimisation of energy performance. On the roof there are 252 photovoltaic collectors (8.3 kW at peak) connected in order to have an air gap underneath: such technical provision (PV/T System) allows to cool the panels down during the summer to avoid a performance deterioration of the system while, in the winter, via a particular channelling of the air, it is possible to accumulate thermal energy inside a tank located underneath the lower horizontal enclosure which contains PCM – phase changing materials. These materials during the day take the heat from the hot air coming from the roof, a bypass diverts the internal air into the environment towards the duct containing the salts which, via the absorption of the heat from the air that crosses them, change their phase and lower the temperature of the air itself allowing a reduction of the load on the air conditioning system. The night washing allows the salt to regenerate and to start the cycle again the following day. The full air conditioning system is composed of air-water heat pump generator and by a high-efficiency heat recovery system. A photovoltaic facade on the south and thermal solar collectors contribute to the energy production. The containment of energy consumption is ensure by high performance perimeter enclosures (wall U = 0.1 Wm2/K, roof U = 0.12 Wm2/K, flooring U = 0.25 Wm2/K) thanks to the use VIP water-tight innovative insulating panels. To compete the technological core of this apparently vernacular building there is domotic system that electronically controls all the house’s devices from the windows to the artificial lighting allowing to reduce and optimise the energy consumption. 69 ARKETIPO – S Tongji University 3 Studio tridimensionale della facciata 3D study of the facade Il contenimento dei consumi energetici è garantito da chiusure perimetrali ad alte prestazioni schermate da pannelli di legno intrecciati The limitation of the energy consumption is ensured by the high performance perimeter enclosures protected by the interwoven timber panels SD Europe 70 71 Tongji University 1 Studio tridimensionale della copertura curva 3D study of the curved roof 1 Sezione verticale tipo.
