T he market turmoil is pretty obvious and known to all by now; with the exception of some countries in some privileged area, the rest of the world economies are struggling, or perhaps aren’t able to find solutions to an economic recovery that can meet the production and economic needs towards a balanced and sustained social development. Political and social tensions, clashesofculturesandancient indelible grudges, hoarding of resources, civil war conflicts and therefore consequent future imbalances are among the elements that combine to create instability and lack of certainty. In Italy it is hard to imagine that the next general election might lead to a country’s government capable of solving – in the short term - the serious structural problems we suffer. The Trevi Group is still projected with seriousness and commitment in this scenario of strong tensions, our ability demonstrated in over 45 years of constantand growing presence in the international market, the experience and the respect earned through hundreds of job contracts, continue to be the most important driver of our efforts in the coming years. segue a pag. 2/follow on page 2 Gran Bretagna/L’isola di Soilmec Great Britain/Soilmec’s Island Quella di Peterborough in Gran Bretagna è stata la prima filiale Soilmec all'estero. Gianluigi Trevisani Drillmec, for example, managed to derive significant benefits - to make sure to be able to get large future orders for oil exploration - in the balance found between the necessary “internationalization” and the equally essential “localization” in Belarus and the United States, in addition to the existing centers of Dubai, Somalia and Mumbai. Basically, it’s the ability to design and adapt the systems for their use outside the areas of production and therefore the subsequent addition - in site - of special features that make it possible to use the facilities in those specific markets; as you can notice it is a subtle but fundamental difference between the two words. Similarly, Soilmec, although being currently constrained by the global crisis in the field of construction and infrastructural projects, has created a comprehensive network to be closer to the customer, by providing technologies and also services. Petreven has been already and successfully working for years according to the concept above defined. Also the foundation area, therefore Trevi, will have to develop more precise and imposing marketing strategy tools, being present in areas that are still “vacant”, and research collaborations with other local players of the sector who can help to eliminate possible risks; we must be careful and appropriately assess each single offer that we will make, knowing that success goes through the ability to evaluate the costs and related risks in a meaningful way. One thing is certain for everybody, Internationalization is challenging because it is made of stubbornness, quality, competence and determination. But this is still not enough; all Group companies must apply the concept that - in order to survive and develop - the orientation alone to be “international” is not sufficient, as well as the mere competence and the ability to make a profit with the job orders we have; what we need is calibrated and targeted investments. We must emphasize even more the habit of thinking in view of costs and benefits. Waste, abundance, the surplus are no longer allowed, and, on the contrary, we have to address to simplicity and cost-savings in every aspect of our work. Today the finance available to businesses is still poor and suffering costs that are tripled compared to a few years ago; this is why the Group will endeavor to reduce costs while optimizing efficiency, and, above all, it will try to keep open the possibility of investing abroad in order to acquire production companies capable of bringing value to our work. The contribution of each of us will have to affect not only the daily operations but the way we think and suggest continuous changes in order to be always ahead in technology, efficiency and productivity! Two years of preparation and exceptional teamwork lead the Group to set new parameters for slurry wall construction. THE GROUP JOURNAL 7 December 2012 Our News News dal nostro mondo T revi Group ha s on ce a g a i n made an important breakthrough in the field of underground engineering. Thanks to a new hydromill performing a test at the Gualdo site near Cesena in November, the Group - with Trevi, the service division, teaming up with Soilmec, division that designs and produces underground engineering equipment - has acquired the ability to build slurry walls down to 250 meters, a depth previously considered inaccessible. The landmark experiment, conducted at a site that reproduced actual operating conditions characterized by a variable geological composition, carries special relevance and received the scientific support of the University of Bologna, the Polytechnic University of Turin and the Marche Polytechnic University. The result provides the maximum limit ever reached and was made possible by the design of the new Tiger hydromill, to date the only machine in the world able to excavate to such a depth. The machine derives from the Soilmec SC-200 further validation of the synergy between the different divisions of Trevi Group and opens up new horizons for participation in complex projects of an international scope. In particular, Trevi’s new technology allows engineers to confront and solve complex geotechnical problems involving hydraulic and other infrastructure requiring the construction of deep slurry walls. W h e n t h e G ro u p makes the difference The new record was the result of an extended s t u d y c o o rd i n a t e d bet ween Trevi and hoses powering the h y d ro m i l l m o d u l e . The hydromill module was also modified to withstand the enormous pressure (approx. 30 bar) it would be subject to once it reached the excavation bottom. To e n s u re th e La videata del DMS mostra la profondità raggiunta./The DMS screen shows the maximum depth reached. S oilme c , who then proceeded to develop the machine based on the special application requirements. The 250meter depth exceeds by over 100 meters crane, whose structure was modified to house the power unit and the large winders containing the hose for aspiration of excavated material and hydraulic functionality of the hydromill module the e n g i n e e r s a d o p te d innovation solutions that would maintain the hydraulic seal of the connectors as well as protect the electrical and sensor components, which would assign the crucial task of sending data to the DMS system. It was precisely the DMS system that made a key contribution to ensure the perfect outcome of the exper iment, because it enabled realtime monitoring of the principal excavation parameters and thus allowed control of the verticality. The Gualdo site also featured a new Soilmec bentonite slurr y treatment system currently being used at one of the sites of the Copenhagen metro. During the experiment, the system showed off its strengths, in particular its ability to unload directly onto the truck the solid debris headed to the recycling plant and its capacity to eliminate the finest components in the mix such as silt, which are usually difficult to separate. Before touching 250 meters, Soilmec had developed and tested at the same site a new Tiger mill able to reach a depth of 150 meters. A record in itself, this test was the point of departure for another technolo g ical lea p to attain the -250 meters. Need less to say, the new technolog y devised by Soilmec can g uarantee the “standard ” depths between 50 and 120 meters with even surer results. 8 December 2012 THE GROUP JOURNAL News dal nostro mondo Our News Il Gruppo Trevi impegnato nel recupero di Costa Concordia Trevi Group joins effort to salvage the Costa Concordia La grande esperienza nell’ingegneria del sottosuolo al servizio del progetto di recupero del relitto della nave Costa Concordia. Trevi’s far-reaching experience in underground engineering is put to use in the salvage operation of the Costa Concordia cruise liner. T revi Group performed important preliminary works that are essential for the project to salvage the wreck of the Costa Concordia, still resting on its side just metres off the shore of the Tuscan island of Giglio. The ship, half-submerged and heavily tilted, has been in that position since last January 13th, date of the catastrophic incident in which 32 persons lost their lives. The 2,380 tonnes of fuel on board were successfully removed in order to prevent the most immediate and major threat to the environment. There was also the problem of how to remove the ship (290.2 m length overall, 35.5 m beam and light ship weight of over 45,000 tonnes) without jeopardizing the marine life of the protected area. After evaluating several projects, Costa Concordia management awarded the salvage operation to the U.S. and Italian partnership of TitanMicoperi, who presented an innovative project for towing away the stricken ship in one piece. The sheer size of the cruise liner, its position with respect to the shore and the risks related to its removal make the salvage the most complex ever attempted. The ship will be turned upright and made to refloat using external caissons that will allow it to be towed to a basin for breaking up. Before that stage, however, the project incorporates a series of preparations crucial to later operations, including a seabed sur vey to precisely determine the composition and the construction of an anchor system to secure the wreck before a u tumn, when s ea storms can put at risk the already precarious stability of the boat. Trevi Group in charge of survey and anchors Stabilizing the wreck will require that anchors be constructed between the liner and shore. Secured to these anchors will be metal structures weighing over 30 tonnes attached with large steel cables to tie back the ship and prevent it from sliding deeper. Sur vey and anchor construction have been handed over to Trevi Group, who split the job between two divisions: RCT for the geological s ur ve y a nd Trevi, company of the Group specializing in ground engineering, now in the phase of constructing the anchors. The operation is unprecedented also from a geotechnical standpoint owing to the high specialization and experience required, prerequisites guaranteed by Trevi to project heads. Trevi has been active for over 50 years in the field of ground engineering in every corner of the world, consistently standing out for completing projects of extreme complexity. From the stabilization of the Tower of Pisa and the bell tower of Saint Mark’s Square in Venice, to the stabilization of several dams in the U.S. and the completion of dozens of marine projects in challenging conditions in Europe and Africa, Trevi can count on invaluable expertise, special equipment and, above all, on human capital, allowing it to hold prominence in its field on a global scale. Soilmec machine in action For the survey, RCT used an SM-20 drilling rig, whereas for anchor construction Trevi used an SM-21 drilling rig. Both machines were supplied by Soilmec, company of the Trevi Group specialized in the design and production of machinery for special foundations. In Peru, Galante Cimentaciones SA (also belonging to the Trevi Group), is involved in the execution of bored piles for a section of the “Electric Train in Lima”, a key project for the development of the country. While, in the past, they worked on the construction of the Olmos dam and the Billinghurst bridge. In the Dominican Republic the construction of foundation piles for the stations of the Santo Domingo Metro new line has been recently completed (in 2009 Galante had built the foundation works for metro lines 1 and 2). In the Republic of Panama they carried out the foundations of the Ten Tower and the Donald Trump Tower that dominate the skyline of the Panama City waterfront and they are currently involved in the widening of the Panama Canal. In Ecuador the intervention for the Bridge Borbon-Esmeralda and the Ecuador pier are to be mentioned. Un atteg g iamento necessario per costruire– come si usa dire in Colombia – un “FUTURO FIRME”. 12 December 2012 THE GROUP JOURNAL Trevi Our history T he histor y of the current Galante SA, a company dedicated to special foundation works, began in 1953 thanks to the intuition of Eng. Fausto Galante Trapani who arrived in Colombia from his native city Meta di Sorrento to found the Fausto Galante Trapani y Cia LTDA. The company began to work in an area where the buildings were not ver y high and therefore the deep foundation works were not that specialized. The first breakthrough came in 1956 when the company bought their first, innovative foundation equipment, a hydraulic machine that could carry out piles from 520 to 620 mm diameter, at a depth of 33 meters. The investment allowed offering innovative solutions in the foundation field, in terms of reaching greater depths. And then the first major works started to arrive: the ther moele ctr ic plant of Zapaquira, the skyscraper of Bavaria, the skyscraper of the Banco Sudamericano, the stock Exchange building and the Bacatà Hotel in Bogota. In 1973 Fausto’ son joined the company, the civil engineer Roberto G a l a n te, wh o wa s appointed Director of the foundation works for the thermoelectric plant in Paipa, 200 kilometres north of Bogota. The entry of engineer Roberto Galante coincided with the choice of specializing more in the execution of foundation works. So, over the last 30 years, Galante SA carried out the foundations for more than 770 works, among which: the thermoelectric plant in Barrancabermeja (1973), the Colpatria Panoramica di Panama City, con i progetti Ten Tower e Trump Tower per i quali Galante SA ha realizzato le fondazioni. Overview of Panama City, with Ten Tower and Trump Tower projects for which Galante SA has made the foundations. sk yscraper (1978), the underground of Medellin (1987), the Plato-Zambrano Bridge (1995), the viaduct of the military camp base in La Vibora (2009), etc. In over 50 years of activity, the company established itself in Colombia (but also in Peru, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and the Republic of Panama where it is still active today) as the leading company in the field of special foundations, not only for the capacity of facing any type of foundation work, but also for its ability to always offer new services, equipment and technologies. A consistent attitude towards innovation that has even increased since Galante SA became part of the Trevi Group, following the acquisition by Trevi SpA. This acquisition, which was ratified at the end of 2008, made it possible to combine Galante SA’s deep knowledge of the Colombian market (and more generally of the South American one) with Trevi’s extensive international experience gained in 55 years of activity, in the 5 continents. A present that looks towards the future In recent years Galante SA participated in the creation of the most strategic works in terms of country development. The “Hidrosogamoso” dam, still under construction (by Impregilo Colombia sas), located in the canyon where the Sogamoso river crosses the mountain region Serrania de la Paz, 75 km upstream from its confluence with the Rio Magdalena; the enlargement of the “El Dorado International” airport in Bogota, where over 1,800 piles were carried out, at a depth of 50 m, performed by two work teams with a Soilmec SR-30 rig; and the execution of continuous flight auger piles for the new refinery Viadotto Tablazo, Colombia./Tablazo viaduct, Colombia. of Cartagena, on behalf of CBI. A special mention ought to be made for “Ruta del Sol”, the most important highwaywhichiscurrently under construction in Colombia and that directly connects Bogotá to the Caribbean coast, hence allowing to save almost 8 travelling hours. The project was divided into three lots. Galante SA carried out most of the piles of the Second Section for Odebrecht and all the piles of the first section, using the Soilmec rigs SR-90, R-825 and R-725, (Soilmec being the engineering company in the Trevi Group). The construction of 192 piles in sound rock is still under construction, with a diameter between 1,500 and 2,500 mm, is part of the works for the viaducts of “Group III”, (which allows a major growth and development of the knowledge relevant to large diameter piles Un forte impegno nel sociale/A strong social committment In tutti questi anni di attività, Galante SA non ha mai fatto mancare il proprio sostegno e impegno verso il territorio e le fasce più deboli della popolazione. Through the years, Galante SA never failed to support and commit to the territory and the most vulnerable parts of the population. Among the many interventions, we ought to mention those in favour of the people affected by the great flood, of the institution taking care of the children who are victims of violence and of the education of poor children in the areas of Santander, Hiula and the coast. The Galante SA ownership has also launched a meritorious project towards its employees which consists in providing material support to those who reported work-related accidents or who have children with severe disabilities. into rock materials) in areas that are almost inaccessible. To end with, the execution of the foundations for the new Hotel Bacatà in Bogotá with 66 floors is at an advanced stage; it is among the highest hotels in the capital (in the past Galante had built the first Hotel Bacatà). This project is requiring the execution of bored piles up to 2,400 mm in diameter and 57 m deep as well as a 600 and 800 mm reinforced concrete diaphragm wall with the Soilmec rigs SR100 and SC-90. The synergy between Trevi and Galante SA allowed the expansion to the activity scope, with the case of turnkey maritime works. In December 2012, Galante SA began the construction of piles and decks of the “Muelle Riverport” on the Magdalena River, in the city of Barranquilla. Galante S A played an important role in the top conference/ event dedicated to the construction industry in Colombia, byparticipating in ASOCRETO “RC 2012” that was held in the city of Cartagena last September. The speech was given by Dr. Maurizio Siepi, with the title “Diaphragm walls for dams - news and restoration works” and it was signed both by Trevi and Galante SA. Galante SA aim to p a r t i c i p a te i n th e growth of the country by focusing on sustainable development. With over 250 employees, they focus on expanding the foundation sector through a commitment and an attitude that is strongly oriented to the constant search for quality, safety and trust. An attitude th a t i s a b s ol u te l y necessary to build - as they say in Colombia - a “SOUND FUTURE”. TREVIICOS has reached an important milestone in the program of work with the completion of the concrete embankment wall. Questo comunicato fa seguito all’importante riconoscimento reso noto dal US Corps of Engineers. T he Trevi division, specialized in ground engineering services, through its foreign subsidiary TREVIICOS Inc. in joint-venture with a strategic partner, reached a major milestone at the Wolf Creek Dam in Nashville, Kentucky with the installation of the 433rd and final panel of the protective concrete embankment wall. The works carried out are part of the large Foundation Remediation Project of the USCorpsofEngineers. This press release follows the important announcement of the milestone reached by the US Corps. The completion of the Protective Concrete E m b a n k m e n t Wa l l (PCEW) finalizes a major stage of construction that is crucial for the final stage of construction of the main barrier wall. The PCEW is a six-foot wide and up to 230 feet deep concrete wall that stems down to the top of the rock extending 3,800 feet along the length of the embankment. The principal purpose is that of protecting the embankment while the main barrier is being built. The safe completion, withoutanycomplications, ofthisparticularpartofthe project represents a major accomplishment both for the technologies and the project management skill s employed in coordinating the large number of machinery on the operating platforms. The installation of the main barrier wall continues and more than 70 percent of the concrete piles have been successfully completed. These piles extend up to 275 feet deep through the embankment and into the limestone to close openings in the rock and cut off seepage. TREVIICOS achieved a n o th e r m i l e s to n e reaching 1,000,000 man-hours without an accident. This represents an absolute ground breaking record both for the scope and complexity of this project which represents the largest and most difficult foundation remediation project in the world to this day. Stefano Trevisani, CEO of TREVI Group stated: “ T he achievement of this impor tant milestone represents a significant testimony of the technological excellence of TREVI Group. The execution of this project continues to be an integral part of the project management skills brought forward by the Group in executing large and complex contracts. Work is being carried out successfully withthehigheststandard of safety registering the most efficient rates of production. We are absolutely pleased to provide the best services and technology in the industry and strive to continue the successful execution of this important and broad project of the US Corps of Engineers”. “Eseguiamo una media di oltre 385 sollevamenti con gru ogni C vehicles, equipment, and people moving around day and night on the work platform,” said Lt. Col. James A. DeLapp, Nashville District commander.Theoverallbarrier installation to stop seepage in the karst geology within the dam’s foundation is 80 percent finished and on course for completion in December 2013. John Schnebelen, Nashville District’s safety manager at Wolf Creek Dam, said safety policies were put in place early on that enabled the project to move forward with a million hours without a losttime injury. He added that onstruction crews at the Wolf Creek Dam Foundation Remediation Project reached a lofty safety milestone when the men and women installing a concrete barrier wall deep into the dam’s embankment reached 550 days and one million workhours on the job without a lost-time accident. During this period, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District and its contractor, joint-venture between TREVIICOS and Soletanche, worked very hard to avoid accidents that could potentially cause delays. They teamed up, held frequent training needs were identified, the Corps and contractor partnered to revise the accident prevention plan, and a safety culture thrived that allowed both safety and productivity to increase simultaneously. “Both safety and productivity go hand in hand,” Schnebelen said. “You cannot be successful in one area and not the other.” There is a real sense of pride by the contractor, which has focused on the health and wellbeing of its employees. Fabio Santillan, project manager for TREVIICOS-Soletanche J.V., said his work crews have been working around the clock, accumulating more than 11,000 man hours every week. “Thirteen drilling rigs, and several other ancillary equipment work in a very congested area day and night with no interruption,” Santillan said. “We perform on average more than 385 crane lifts every day and 110,000 per year. Each lift is a critical operation that requires our personnel to understand the risks and to follow the procedures in a methodic and safe manner. THE GROUP JOURNAL 19 December 2012 Trevi Italia/La “Galleria Cavallo” sulla A14 Italy/The A14 “Cavallo Tunnel” Soilmec ST-120 e varie tecnologie di jet grouting speciali e brevettate: entrambe al lavoro per l’ampliamento dell’autostrada Bologna-Taranto. Soilmec ST-120 and special patented jet grouting technologies at work for the enlargement of the Bologna-Taranto highway. T revi S.p.A. T revi S.p.A. has been chosen to works in the project to enlarge from two to three lanes the Adriatic highway in order to streamline the communication in one of the most congested infrastructure in Italy. In particular, inside th i s w i d e p ro j e c t , Trevi is involved in the execution of “Cavallo” tunnels. To satisfy the three lanes highway needs the tunnel has an excavation radius up to 9 m, an average 200 m2 section and extends for an overall length of 510 m. The site geolog y is mainly characterized by the presence of PlioPleistocene cohesive deposits. From a lithological point of view, the units interested from the excavation are clayey silts and silty clay with very few presence of silty sand small strata. Consistency increases from stiff to very stiff to hard with the depth. The track is very superficial due to a cover that ranges between 8 to 20 m. The dimensions of the excavation front, the poor mechanical characteristics of the encountered soils and the reduced cover would have prudently suggested the excavation be carried out via a series of partial excavations. Approaching the problem with the ADECO-RS approach (Analysis of controlled Deformations in Rock and Soils) and using the state of the art innovative system of soil improvement, allowed the full face excavation increasing in the same time safety , improving the schedule and reducing the costs. According to ADECO analysis, the behaviour category of the tunnel was classified as C type (unstable front), so it was necessary to stabilize the excavation front by means of proper soil improvement installed in advance to artificially produce the arch effect at the outline of the excavation. To consolidate in advance a clayey-silt formation like the one present is a very hard problem. Trevi has proposed (and successfully completed) a patented jetting rotoinjection technique using a steel casing which is left in place as reinforcement of the arch. Moreover to be able to perform the jetting columns with the requested size, ETJ (Enhanced Trevi Jet) system has been used in the test field and applied in the following. ETJ systems foresees special monitors and other devices to focus the jetting energy, increase the desegregation of the jetting thus obtaining column diameters bigger 40% more of the standard. Fibreglass elements were used to reinforce the advance core. The rig chosen by Trevi is the Soilmec equipment for tunneling ST-120. The ST-120 main feature is the presence of 2 different masts independently controlled and powered by two electric motors and supported by 2 telescoping cylinders. The cylinders are connected to the main frame by means of 2 slewing rings. The main frame, powered by a diesel engine, is mounted o n a c ra wl e r t y p e undercarriage complete w i th 4 o u t r i g g e r s and sliding frame for positioning the slewing rings at different heights and levels in order to meet the requirements of the tunnel to be excavated. The two masts are equipped with a telescopic foot hydraulically controlled, that can be placed against the excavating face. This allows the use of rope operated crowd system/ pull back to be applied to the drilling. Once the mast has been positioned as required, the consolidation treatment can be completed. This configuration allows drilling to be carried out through 180° directly connected to ma s t support. The rotoinjection technology requires the use of two strings which are simultaneously driven by two coaxial power swivels (double rotary). 20 December 2012 THE GROUP JOURNAL Trevi Italia/Lavori in corso per EXPO 2015 Italy/Works in progress for EXPO 2015 S ono partite alla fine della scorsa estate le attività Trevi all’interno del cantiere per la realizzazione delle opere di viabilità dell’area Expo 2015 a Milano. A process composed of distinct modules that can operate on the entire sediment management chain, from dredging works to the final outcome, with the aim of reaching the maximum reuse of the resource. Separation plant grading and sediment treatment experienced in Marghera (Venice). Ing. Daniele Vanni, Trevi Group R&D Project Service Director Giovanni Preda, Trevi Group R&D Project Service T he need for massive sediment dredging works involves relevant technical and environmental issues and strongly influences the commercial development of many ports. The sediments’ nature, different contaminations, removal techniques and possibilities of decontamination, the recovery and/or reflow Environmental Dredging: Sludge Buster Method The dredging technology must be chosen on the basis of the biochemical and geotechnical characterization of the site. Prototype for the consolidation of the sediment in line with PFM. cover several technical and scientific disciplines. The cooperation between Trevi Group and 3V Green Eagle, a leading company in the detoxication of heavily contaminated waste was envisaged on this basis. The two companies have developed a process composed of distinct modules that can operate on the entire sediment management chain, from dredging works to the final outcome, with the aim of reaching the maximum reuse of the resource. Based on the results achieved in activities performed first, the two companies have implemented processes with the construction of pilot plants. In this way it was possible to assess in the field - through tests carried out with Clients and Designers - the technological tools used to solve specific treatment problems linked to a site. of turbidity currents. The Sludge Buster technology has been developed as a result of careful comparison of the most common characteristics of dredging technology, trying to satisfy some characteristic points: a) the small size of the device prevents any activity already present in the area from being suspended; b) the characteristics of the device exclude the generation of turbidity current; c) the reduced size of the device allows a high plano-altimetric precision of the removal activities; d) the small size of the device enables work in the presence of reduced hydraulic head or, in the amphibious configuration, of a possible null head, e) given the small size, and therefore the low power used, it has a low noise and air pollution impact. This allows working in delicate environmental contexts. Two devices Sediments’ pretreatment: Vibro-sieve with a two-stage cyclone The pretreatment has two main purposes: the homogenization of the physical characteristics and the recovery of the sand fraction. It increases the efficiency of the whole management process. Shocks and forces - to which it is subjected when crossing the sediment of the desanding sections contributetotheseparation of contaminants from various fractions. Finally, there is the separation of very fine particles by centrifugation. The solid phase looks like a thickened sludge and can be sent to the sediment tank or to landfill soil after being possibly stabilized. The fluid phase is sent to the treatment, or, alternatively, it is reused as process fluid within the Sludge Buster, in order to maximize the saving of the water used. Water and sludge treatment: detoxification by Wet Oxidation In case of heavy contamination, the disposal of waste water and sludge becomes extremely problematic. For this reason, an innovative and technological process was chosen to manage this phase, called the Wet Oxidation. The plant performs the “Wet-Oxidation” of the organic component of the sludge with pure oxygen or oxygen-enriched air at high temperature and high pressure. WetOxidation is particularly effective against the most complex and toxic molecules present in the contaminated silts such as: “Cyanides”, “PCB”, “IPA”, “Hydrocarbons C>12”; for these substances the conversion reaches about 100%. Because of its composition, the residual COD leaving the Wet-Ox idation plant is completely biodegradable. In-line stabilization of the material to be sent to the landfill In order to be able to use the area occupied by the landfills as port infrastructure, it is often necessary to give higher geo-mechanical features to sediments. This is generally achieved by consolidating the heap through the addition of suitable binders. Trevi SpA has designed two different methods of inline consolidation of the whole stack of dredged material to be sent to destination: for cases in which it is convenient to separate the sand fraction for its recovery: centrifuge for the thickening and in-line consolidation of the fluid suspension of the remaining silts and clays after the granulometric separation treatment. The industrial application has already b e e n i m p l e m e n te d and tested in Venice; for cases in which the sand fraction is low and its separation isn’t convenient or necessary: the PFM system for the transport of the dredged sediment and the inline injection of binding agents and stabilizers during the reflow into the landfill. The in-line stabilization by means of PFM favors a reduction of the costs linked to the extreme simplification of the process and to the possibility of moving large quantities of sediments, with the help of barges that are suitably equipped, thus reducing the working time. A pilot plant was built and made available to potential customers, in order to study the treatment optimized as per the specific-site characteristics and to verify its effectiveness. Said technologies allow a remarkable homogeneity of the stabilized material: the mixture of binders, made with a recipe such as to optimize the addition of water to the process, is inserted into suitable points of the plants, so as to have a thorough mixing of the binder’s particles with the solid matrix and an output material which immediately starts hardening. The automatic control of the quantity of binders to be added is carried out on the basis of the material’s required features and its intended use. The exper imental work already carried out has proven the effectiveness of these technologies. Eng. History in the making In the 1970’s, the first a gent to represent Soilmec in the UK was a foundation company called Peter Linde. Shortly after, Alimak, company dealing in the construction hoist market took over the agency. Reg Kilsby was appointed by Alimak to sell tunnelling and ground improvement products, part of which was the Soilmec range of special drilling and foundation equipment. Reg succeeded to supply their first S oilmec product into the UK to Cementation Ltd, today part of the Skanska Group. Alimak continued to work closely with their two premier clients Cementation and Fairclough, supplying the EC range, RTA/S truck mounted and RTC/S and RT3/S crane mounted rigs. Robin North joined Alimak in 1980, during which time Soilmec had developed the first self-erecting hydraulic rotary rig, the RTH/C, mounted on a PPM2502 crane. The RTH/C was Pressure wash bay. a compact, powerful rig which dramatically reduced the set up time on site from days to just 3 hours. This technically advanced rig was a gigantic step forward for Soilmec at the time, which set the benchmark for the development of the present day self erecting rigs. Until 1983 all work was undertaken using the rotary bore pile method, as at the time the U.K Soilmec was extremely progressive in the design and development of innovative solutions to var ious dr illing applications, gained from listening to clients and the on-site experience of sister company Trevi. When the Alimak agency was terminated in 1987, it was decided that Soilmec Ltd, the first daughter company of Soilmec Spa, would be established. Directors Owen Pritchard, Responsabile Assistenza./ Service Manager. Vicky Hall, Responsabile Servizio ricambi./ Spare Parts Administrator. did not totally accept the CFA pile application as proven correct practice. Soilmec rose to the challenge together with Alimak and Cementation to develop the first CFA self-erecting drill rig, the CM-42. The main feature which turned the CFA rig into a rig of choice was a simple pressure gauge to ensure the correct concrete pressure and indicating integrity of the pile, therefore making the CFA pile acceptable in the UK. Due to the success of the CM-42, various dedicated CFA models were designed and developed to meet the various market demands. During the 1980-90’s Reg Kilsby and Robin North moved across from Alimak, together with service engineer Mark Nelson, opening the doors on the 5 May 1988, with the sole purpose to sell and service Soilmec equipment. Building on foundations Since 1988, we have been successful in placing in excess of 500 Soilmec machines into the UK. It became obvious that after 15 years, the small facilities in Oundle were no longer sufficient for the growing needs of Soilmec in the UK. It has been decided to invest one million pounds in new ten acre site near Polebrook, Peterborough. Prior to client taking delivery, the new rig under goes an intensive pre-delivery inspection, maintaining our professional image when the rig is delivered to site. Once on site our After Sales Service Team commission the unit and look after the equipment during the warranty period. However, our support does not stop there we continue the same dedicated service throughout the life of the rig. Our stores building holds an extensive range of spare parts, available for same day collection or next day delivery to the client. We have many years of experience in the spare parts market, Lesley Herron and Vicky Hall, are trained to maintain stock, identify, and supply the correct parts, giving the client reassurance of continued reliability. Our aim is to provide the best parts at competitive prices to minimise rig downtime, with a fast solution of parts that deliver real value. We pride ourselves on our fast and effective After Sales Service, with our experience of Soilmec products; we have built an excellent. Our specialised on site service, by our team of mobile Service Engineers, is available throughout the UK and Ireland, now co-ordinated by our newly appointed Service Manager, Owen Pritchard. In addition our new workshop with two overhead cranes and the capacity for three large rigs at any one time has further enhanced ability to offer extensive large scale maintenance, repair and overhaul service. Our facilities also include a separate fabrication shop, pressure wash bay and a large yard for storing equipment. After Sales Service is what we concentrate on here in the UK , the majority of our personnel are dedicated to looking after the client and the machine once they have taken delivery. Our Sales Team consists of Robin North responsible for Drillmec and used equipment, Mark Nelson for new Soilmec equipment and Steph Keane looking after Micro-drilling with Sophie Stewart supporting the team. The captain of the U.K team is still Robin North (Managing Director), a s s i s te d b y n e w l y a ppoin ted G eneral Manger, Mark Nelson, both who have been with the company since the beginning. In fact, most of our employees stay with us for many years, giving a low staff turnover and retaining our knowledge and experience. Being part of the Soilmec G roup we have an excellent relationship with our head office and factory in Italy, which gives us instant access to a wealth of information enabling a prompt and efficient service. The Club of Innovators from UNINDUSTRIA Forlì-Cesena visited our headquarters and was welcomed by the management that introduced them a business where innovation is the key watchword. U NINDUSTRIA Forlì-Cesena with its Innovators’ Club aims at promoting and spreading the culture of innovation through the knowledge among companies, as if in a network structure, using as main operational tool “discussion groups” and visits to companies particularly engaged in research and development. T h e C l u b i s m a d e up of managers and technicians capable to see an added value in the synergies between companies, in order to accelerate innovation and to evaluate comparisons as a growth opportunity. Soilmec, a leading company in the desi g n, pro duction and distribution of rigs and equipments for soil engineering at international level and which provides the construction industry with a complete ra n g e o f te ch n i c a l solutions, hosted 25 “ I n n ova to r s ”, th a t is, representatives of companies operating in the province, at its plant in Cesena on May 15th 2012. “Innovation is the tool to win and the man prepared to change is the one who survives”, this is what the CEO of Soilmec, Mr. Simone Trevisani, supports and believes, and, with these words, he kicked off the work table. Feder ico Pa g lia cci, Marketing and R&D Director, described Soilmec which belongs to the Trevi Group, as a global company present in 5 continents, with 5,815 employees worldwide, covering up to 43 ethnic groups. Soilmec rigs are used daily in sites all over the world to carry out the foundation works that are necessar y for the construction of bridges, viaducts, highways, tunnels, metro and railway lines and for constructions of all kinds, disposing of over 70 models and 19 technologies. The Technical Dept. Director, Mr. Alberto Antonelli, presented the DMS application that allows the remote assembling of drilling rigs. T he system, mounted by default on all Soilmec rigs, allows the operator to control all the mechanical functions of the drilling rig through a touch screen monitor mounted in the cab and provides real time alarm notifications of any malfunction. These data are then sent in real time to the Soilmec control center, hence enabling eng ineers and employees of the Technical Dept. and of the After Sales Dept. to ta k e immed ia te action in order to solve malfunctions and implement solutions that avoid a recurrence of the problems in the future. T he presentation and the subsequent visit to the premises, accompanied by the Production Director, Mr. Ivan Del Sepia, were an impor tant opportunity to share and discuss common problems. What mainly struck the members of the C lub of Innovators was the way Soilmec addresses the entire market, with flexibility and availability and by focusing on its service as well as assessing competition even on patents. T he Integrated Centrifugal Decanter (ICD) is a developed device, fully integrated and capable to process high-density mud taken at several points of the drilling mud treatment plant. ICD allows to improve the treatment performance and to extend the average life of the mud used for the panel excavation. In addition ICD allows monitoring the parameters for correcting the mud properties by adding specific additives. Centrifugal Decanters normally utilized in the drilling sector are limited in performance by the mud mass inflow. This implies that, in the common jobsite installation (defined as “parallel” to the drilling plant – see Picture A), a single centrifuge can’t adequately works to contain the rise in density of the recycled mud. The easier solution is to install more centrifuges in parallel to the drilling plant but this implies a bigger capital investment as well as increased spaces and footprint that, in several cases, are not realistically feasible. TheICD(showninPicture B), is a revolutionary system that allows the following functions: • Use of a single centrifuge specifically developed for extremely high mass flow rates (high flow and high density contemporary on treated mud inflow); • The parallel installation is replacedbytheserieswitha multiple feed points taken along the several stages THE GROUP JOURNAL 29 December 2012 Soilmec of the mud treatment plant. Thus it is increased the capability to select the more detrimental fine fraction of the drilling mud to be conveyed to the centrifuge to extend the mud’s life; • The feeding of the fine mud to the centrifuge is monitored in suitable proportions so as to have an effective and efficient dehydration; • The reduced variability in the time of the drilling mud density, allows extending the life expectancy of the mud and reducing the need for mud replacing and its required disposal (see Picture C); • Ability to automatically manage the injection of additives (polyelectrolytes, etc.) directly acting on the mud inflow to the centrifuge. In Picture C it appears qualitatively clear that in sites where the fine fraction is particularly high, the standard plants regularly need to dispose of a substantial proportion of regenerated mud to replace it with a fresh one in order to lower the density within the limit admitted by drilling: • Without any centrifuge: curve not DC; • With a single centrifuge installed in parallel: curve 1 DC par; • With two centrifuges installed in parallel: curve 2 DC par. By using ICD it is possible to control the raising of the density, by ensuring excellent characteristics to the regenerated mud and reducing the required disposal. In fe w word s, the main advantages of this innovation are as follows: • Reduction in equipment investments; Reductionoftheoperating costs (bentonite, water, disposal, energy, etc.); • R eduction of the transport and installing costs; • Reduction of the required footprint for the complete treatment plant; • Reduction of power absorption by the drilling rig that works with mud whose density is close to the ideal one; • Improvement of the foundationqualitythanks to the better quality of the drilling mud; • R educed overall environmental impact. T he Eccentrical Auger Tip (EAT) is used in the Cased Auger Pile and Cased Secant Pile techniques. Afterhavingcompletedthe cased depth, EAT allows the drilling prosecution with the auger, without any diameter reduction compared to the first cased phase. EAT rotates internally in the casing and protrudes out of it when additional depth is required. Smooth and vertical cased piles are obtained for the whole depth. The auger has an outer diameter that is smaller than the internal passage of the casing; for this reason, the extended drilled depth with the auger is characterized by its smaller diameter in the extended portion (approx. 10 cm). The foundation design has to take into account this diameter variation. The basic idea is to eliminate the step of the diameter along the pile leaving the possibility to extend the drilling below the casing. Picture 1 shows the EAT tip studied for the underescavation of a Øe 1,016 mm tube, in combination with a Ø 940 mm auger. E AT (in yellow) is composed by a lower and a upper part. The shaft of the auger tip is coaxial to the auger. Spirals are assembled in an eccentrical way in order to partially protude over the 940 mm diameter. This eccentricity brings the more external tooth (in orange) at a distance of about 510 mm from the shaft axis, enabling the excavation at Ø 1,020 mm, similarly to the casing diameter. Picture 2 shows the different features: the black curve represents the diameter of the auger, the yellow curve represents the area in which the EAT is inscribed and the red curveshowstheexcavating diameter by EAT. Picture 3 shows the different sequences of the drilling phase: • 3A: std drilling, when the auger is inside the casing (cased depth); • 3B: the tip is protruding off the shoe of the casing and it takes an eccentric configuration in which the EAT axis becomes coincident with the pile axis (the tip is guided by the shoes, preferably by three contacting sectors); • 3C: under excavation (augered depth). 30 December 2012 Soilmec PICTURES FROM BAUMA CHINA 2012 THE GROUP JOURNAL THE GROUP JOURNAL 31 December 2012 Soilmec PAOLO SCARONI, AD DI ENI, HA VISITATO IL NOSTRO STAND E INCONTRATO IL PRESIDENTE DAVIDE TREVISANI ENI CEO PAOLO SCARONI visited our stand and met the PRESIDENT DAVIDE TREVISANI PICTURES FROM Geofluid 2012 32 December 2012 THE GROUP JOURNAL heating) but also in the agriculture industry (greenhouses). The HH-102 will work in the Great Hungarian Plan (named Alföld) The HH-102 rig solution has been chosen after a deep marketing analyses mainly thanks to its very limited footprint and low level of noise emissions that are mandatory features for the project due to the fact that Drilling activities will be in urban area. In its first two years of scheduled drilling activities, the HH102 will drill in total 6 geothermal wells, 2 of them of about 2000 mt maximum depth; other 4 wells of a depth between 1,300 m – 1,700 m. W i th th e H H - 1 0 2 delivered for Hungarian market, Drillmec reaches 156 units of Drilling Rigs HH delivered in the world, that is a clear indication that the modern hydraulic technology of HH rigs is continuously increasing his fame and reputation in the drilling industry, especially in the Europe and in the category of rigs for medium-shallow wells in which hydraulic solution is step by step replacing the traditional mechanical solution. Delivered the first Drillmec HH Drilling Rig in Hungary which will operate in the Great Hungarian Plan. D rillmec is proud to announce the delivery on last October of the first Hydraulic Drilling Rig HH Series in Hungary. It is a rig Drillmec Mod. HH-102 Drilling rig, designed for fast moving and compact jobsite, equipped with a semi-automatic pipe handling system as well as with the last generation of electronic data acquisition and recording system (Drillmec DMS System). The rig will be engaged in a Geothermal drilling campaign as part of a larger project which will see the Hungarian company Geometrikus Beruházó Kft involved, as main Project’s investor, in the use of Renewable Energy, especially in the Geothermal Energy, for civil application (urban La serie HH fa il suo ingresso in Turchia/The HH Series makes its entry in Turkey I l 15 settembre, il pr imo impi anto della serie HH è stato consegnato con successo in Turchia. O n September 15th, the first HH Series Drilling Rig was successfully delivered to Turkey. In the wake of the increasing success of the hydraulic technology applied to drilling machines, Drillmec is consolidating its reputation as one the world leaders. The HH-102 will be working in Aiden and has been chosen for its high flexibility in both oil and geothermal wells and for the outstanding results in terms of drilling performance and less cost per foot drilled. The considerable automation of machine, which is equipped with automatic tong, slips and top drive is able to ensure a high safety standard and a quick operations sequence. The reduced footprint together with the trailer configuration guarantee a fast movement from well to well; nonetheless the possibility of manipulating range 3 pipes with the semiautomatic handling system ensures a good drilling capability. Plen. Inigo Lambertini, dal Direttore Centrale per il Medio Oriente, Min. Plen. Domenico Giorgi, dal DSS: strategie e sviluppo per il futuro DSS: strategies and development for the future I Soilmec rigs displayed on the cover of two magazines recently. The first magazine is “NCE” (New Civil Engineer) which, in the issue dated 29/11/2012, shows the works in Copenhagen. The Department of Strateg y and Development (DSS), directed and coordinated by Cesare Trevisani, in collaboration with Claudio Piconi, aims at identifying, in agreement with the strategies of the Group and the single Divisions, new countries, new markets and areas of potential development and, in the same countries, treating and developing institutional relationships, selecting opportunities and then transferring these opportunities to operating companies. The goal is “to anticipate the future”, to be ready to “act in advance” on the global scene. The DSS action is mainly done in three phases: at the beginning, institutional and operating contacts in countries/areas of interest are developed; then there is the phase of approval to proceed with the implementation, by providing assistance in the startup and setup of the projects of interest. Among the main activities of the DSS there is the development of institutional relations in order to strengthen the Group’s collaboration with the Ministries (Foreign Affairs, Economic Development, Foreign Trade), institutions (ICE, CASH OF DEPOSITS AND LOANS, SACE, SIMEST, Italian Embassies in Italy and abroad) and associations (Confindustria, ANCE, Federcostruzioni, Assomineraria, ASSAFRICA, etc.). Particularly, the Trevi Group maintains close working relationships with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as shown by the second meeting of the leaders from the Ministry and the Trevi Group Board of Directors (see article above). T he Human Resources Development Service, in the person of Ilaria Fogolin, is completing the collection of Degree Thesis on the projects and studies of our company. The work involved students who, in many cases, later joined the staff of the group, and the topics, purely technical in nature, have involved the research and development services as well as the technical offices with regard to mechanical, construction and management engineering. There are three main reasons behind this initiative: • share themes, topics and materials discussed in the thesis for possible uses or suggestions within other business initiatives (in this connection, the thesis will be published in the intranet, in the suitable section); • provide additional value to people who carried out said studies; • boost the synerg y among companies and universities. The material may also be used for training or to provide additional information in order to widen the knowledge of our staff. Sì, perché una maratona non si improvvisa: “what does it take?” Marco De lorenzi Trevi Fin.Industriale O n 21 st October, sheathed in a natty and white-redand–green patriotic kit with the wonderful Pe t r e v e n s p o n s o r logo on my chest, I conquered my third medal of participation in a marathon with a g roup of fr iend s in Amsterdam. The competition in the Dutch capital is famous for its sleek layout and for the typical climate pitfalls of a northern city; and, as a matter o f f a c t , t h e ro u t e doesn’t have technical difficulties, but the cold wind and the high humidity level really put the amateur marathon runner to the test, especially along the 15 km stretch on the banks of the Amstel river. T he locals aren’t generally very friendly, but the moments prior to the start, accompanied by the music of Vangelis (“Conquest of Paradise”), and the passage over the finish line, both at the stadium full of friends, relatives and sports people who came to see the runners who compete for victory, are very moving. In the middle, in those over 4 hours of marathon, there is a jumble of feelings, sensations and thoughts that make the marathon a unique race, always different, sometimes even mystical, although the fatigue and often the pain - I was seized by leg cramps three times, the last of which at 175 meters from the finish – remind you that you are made of matter and that probably “if only I had a little less full of carbohydrates the week before the race, today I would probably be less weighted and more agile.” But to reach the goal of 42 km and 195 meters, even without a top runner performance, and maybe with one more similar to a lame nag, and improving my own performance compared with previous marathons, even of just one minute, has the sweet taste of victory and repays all efforts. Yes, because a marathon can’t be improvised: “what does it take?” is the message printed on the t-shirt of the New York Marathon. Well, after 4 years, I can say I know the answer: a marathon runner is made of sacrifice, determination, commitment, courage, enthusiasm, recklessness and desire to face new challenges. So... see you at the next run, and, of course, always in the company of the ever-present Petreven! Marco De Lorenzi Trevi Fin. It took him 9 hours and 20 minutes to complete the 200 km, that is, he was almost 50 minutes faster than last year. Here are some considerations after the race: “I am truly happy to have participated for the third running year at the Gran Fondo Nove Colli. And I am honored to have participated on behalf of the Trevi Group. In the same way as I am honored to be working in this company. In both situations (i.e., both working and bike climbing) you are to deal with everyday problems that put you to the test. And it’s even harder to cope with your own limits. There are thousands of people who are faster and snappier than you. You are almost tempted to say “No way ... too much work ... I get off the bike ...”, but surrendering doesn’t comply at all with the longing for happiness that each of us has inside. This desire is the engine (and each of us has one ... no matter whether it is more or less powerful!) which allows you to tackle the climbs, whether with your bike or in your own life.” Il Gruppo ciclistico del Gruppo Trevi/Trevi Group Cycling Team 1. It will be employed by the association “Water is Life” in order to continue the project aimed at developing water resources in the Republic of Cameroon. More precisely, it’s a Mercedes 1722 truck equipped with a percussion drill capable of reaching a depth of over 200 m. The truck with the drill unit was officially handed over to the directors of “Water is Life” during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Province of Treviso. After the Holy Mass, the blessing of the rigs and the interventions of institutional authorities, the plant was suitably set up to be shipped to Cameroon.
