EDUCATION
2007-2010. PhD in History of Performing Arts, Musicology, University of Florence.
Thesis Title: “Le canzoni del Song-book di George Gershwin: teatro ed editoria musicale [The songs of
George Gershwin’s Song-book: theater and music editing]”
Supervisors: Mila De Santis, Aloma Bardi, Fiamma Nicolodi, Giovanni Guanti, Raffaele Pozzi, Raffaele De
Berti.
Brief Synopsis of Research:
The songs of George Gershwin’s Song-book were originally written for the theatrical stage (musical, revue,
operetta), but they were also conceived to be recorded, and marketed individually, regardless of the show’s
fate. This double destination is at the center of this thesis, that investigates the songs both in relation with
their Broadway theatrical context and as individual entity. The research is focused on the genesis of the
Song-book, the theatrical use of the songs, and the role of the publisher in promoting, printing and selling
songs. In order to study these topics I spent three months doing research at the Library of Congress in
Washington DC, where George and Ira Gershwin Collection is held, and at the New York Public Library for
the Performing Arts, where many librettos of musical comedies are preserved.
A detailed synopsis is in the appendix to this CV
