About 30 kilometres from Palermo, also in the shade of Monte Jato, it stands in a hilly area 463 metres above sea level, along the Palermo-Sciacca state highway 624. Its territory is part of Special Protection Nature Area of “Monte Jato, Kumeta, Maganoce and Pizzo Parrino” and that of “Monte Matassaro, Monte Gradara and Monte Signora”. Caratteristico abbeveratorio A typical trough In the late eighteenth century, having confiscated the property of the Jesuits, the Bourbon royal family found itself in possession of numerous vast estates that the king could sell with a big profit. Thus the Junta of the Abbusi (a sort of jury of civil administrators entrusted with the task of handling these sales) awarded the Mortilli estate to Prince Giuseppe Beccadelli Bologna. It was he who obtained permission to build a village there, and to pop183 GUIDA AI COMUNI - SAN GIUSEPPE JATO Uno scorcio del paese e uno dei suoi murales A Glimpse of the village and one of its murals Beccadelli Bologna. Inoltre, alle pendici della stessa montagna si può visitare la Grotta Mirabella, che si apre a circa 800 metri slm ma che è raggiungibile attraverso un 184 COMMUNES GUIDE ulate it in the shortest possible time the nobleman also promised a gift in money (no less than 2 onze) to those that decided to get married in the new village. Attracted above all by the fertility of the land, farmers came here from the whole neighbourhood and in less than five years San Giuseppe dei Mortilli arose. The 1831 landslide caused big problems, but San Giuseppe, though two-thirds destroyed, was rebuilt. In 1862 it also changed its name, abandoning the indication of the Mortilli estate to replace it with the more resonant one of the ancient Jato. Things to see Although the history of the modern village is “recent”, this territory was inhabited from prehistoric times. The fact is that over the place looms Mount Jato, where the ancient town of Ietas stood. Moreover, on the slopes of the same mountain you can visit the Mirabella Cave, which is about 800 metres above sea level but can be reached up a path; it presents traces of rock paintings probably dating from the Neolithic. SAN GIUSEPPE JATO - GUIDA AI COMUNI Most of the churches were built after the 1831 earthquake, and so we can speak of recent building, but ancient devotion animates the churches of San Giuseppe Jato, beginning from the nineteenth-century one dedicated to the Madonna del Carmelo,in Piazza del Carmine, near the old cemetery. One is struck by the façade in bare stone and,on the inside, by the picture of The Madonna with St.Simon Stock,an eighteenth-century work by the Palermitan Giuseppe Velasquez. In corso Umberto I there is the church dedicated to the patron saint of San Giuseppe Jato, the Madonna of Providence.Built in 1852, it contains the image that legend has it was found in 1784 on the Dammusi estate. It is the biggest object of devotion in the place. La Chiesa San Francesco di Paola The San Francesco di Paola Church The San Francesco di Paola Church (nineteenth-century),in Corso Umberto, has recently been embellished with six paintings on silk depicting episodes from the life of the saint, done by the contemporary Gabriel Meiring. Near the village is the eighteenth-century Sanctuary of the Madonna of Providence,in the Dammusi area, easy to get to by car, about 3 kilometres from the village in the direction of Giacalone. There are a lot of farms in the countryside all around.Once used as stores and as shelters for farmers and shepherds, some of them are indeed very old:it is the case of the Jato farm, between the river Jato and the Vaccaio area, even mentioned in an 1182 document as a point for identifying the land boundary between Numerose le masserie che sorgono nelle the property of William II and that of the campagne tutt’intorno. La campagna di San Giuseppe Jato è ricca di acqua e di masserie e mulini oggi in rovina The San Giuseppe Jato countryside is rich in water and in ruins of countryhouses and mills Importante per San Giuseppe Jato la masseria che sorge in contrada Dammusi, all’interno del feudo sul quale sorgeva il Casale dei Gesuiti, scelto poi come residenza estiva del principe Beccadelli Bologna e per questo conosciuta anche come “la casa del principe”, oggi adibita a struttura agrituristica. I mulini Si può definire come il più “bello”, il mulino del Principe, costruito su 186 From the cemetery of San Giuseppe Jato, you can get to the Institute of Agriculture and you COMMUNES GUIDE richiesta del principe di Camporeale. Vista sui monti intorno al paese View of the mountains around the village You can get to the mill on foot from provincial highway 20 in the 67/bis direction, following the signs for the Chiusa Farm;from here you continue along a signposted path flanking a water channel and leading to the mill, now nothing more than a ruin but nevertheless visitable. Nature In the whole area there are no fewer than 21 nature paths. There is the path of the Iron Staircase, which begins from the provincial highway for Piana degli Albanesi, where there is the relevant car park.It goes up to the archaeological area from the north side of the mountain. From Via Roma, right in the centre of the village, there starts the Big Cave path, which leads to the cave on the west side of the mountain, with a panorama of the valley and lake Poma.
