Family
In this lesson you will learn(imparerete) how to talk(come parlare) about your family, and
ask(chiedere) family questions:
 Who lives(chi abita) in your house?
 How big(quanto è grande) is your family?
Let’s begin(cominciamo)
Before we watch a short movie, I’ll teach you some vocabulary which may be new to you:
(Prima di guardare un breve filmato, vi insegnerò alcuni vocaboli che potrebbero essere nuovi per
voi):
Aunt: an aunt is the sister of one of your parents
(Zia: una zia è una sorella dei vostri genitori)
Uncle: an uncle is the brother of one of your parents
(Zio: uno zio è il fratello di uno dei vostri genitori)
Nephew: your nephew is the son of your brother or sister
(Nipote maschio di zii: vostro nipote è il figlio di vostro fratello o di vostra sorella)
Niece: a niece is the daughter of your brother or sister
(Nipote femmina di zii: una nipote è la figlia di vostro fratello o sorella)
Cousin: your cousins are the sons and daughter of your aunts and uncles. We use the word
cousin for both male and females(per entrambi maschio e femmina).

When you watch the movie, listen for this family words. Listen for the word have: How many
relatives(parenti) do the people have?









Wow, you have a big family. Who are all these people?
Well, this is my mum, and here is my dad. That’s my brother David with his wife and
their kids.
They’re cute(carini). How old are they?
Well, Betty is 10 and Paul is 5. Do you have any nieces or nephews.
No, My family is pretty (abbastanza) small. Just me, my mum, my dad, my brother, and my
grandfather.
Do you have an aunt or uncle?
Oh yeah! I’ve got but(non ho che) my uncle. He lives in Australia. So I never get to see
him(non vado mai a visitare lui ) or his family.
Would you like to have(ti piacerebbe/vorresti) a big family?
I guess so(penso di si). Perhaps when I’m married. I’ll have three or four kids…but who
knows(chi sa?). How about you? (e tu?)





I don’t think I want that many(non penso di volerne tanti). It’s a hard work to look after
( è faticoso badare) a big family. My grandmother had 8 children(figli).
Wow! So you have seven aunts and uncles. How many cousins do you have?
Well, let me see. There are three, five, seven, eight …ten!
Wow. I bet(scommetto) you get a lot of Christmas presents(regali)
Now let’s talk about the grammar in the movie.
(Ora parliamo della grammatica del filmato)
We use “have” to talk about the people in our families:
(usiamo il verbo “avere” per parlare delle persone della nostra famiglia)
“ I have a brother”;
“Do you have any cousins?”;
“How many nieces do you have?”
Look at this sentences:
(date un’occhiata a queste frasi)
”When I get married, I want to have three children”
“My grandmother had four children”
To have children also means(significa anche) to give birth(dare alla luce/far nascere).
