The midnight sun
In the Arctic, the midnight sun occurs in summer months at places north of the Arctic Circle, which crosses nine
countries. Here, the sun remains visible at midnight. Around the summer solstice, the sun is visible for the full
24 hours. But the midnight sun can also be seen south of the Arctic Circle, such as in Yellowknife. The opposite
phenomenon, polar night, occurs in winter when the sun stays below the horizon all day. At the poles
themselves, the sun only rises once and sets once each year.

E. Personal details about the man who started a library
F. Why and when Guanlao started the library
The man who turned his home into a public library
By Kate McGeown, BBC News, Manila
1. ________
If you put all the books you own on the street outside your house, you might expect them to disappear. But one
man in Manila, Philippines tried it - and found that his collection grew. Hernando Guanlao, an energetic man in
his early 60s, has one passion - books. Guanlao, known by his nickname Nanie, has set up an informal library
outside his home in central Manila to encourage his local community to share his joy of reading.
2.________
The idea is simple. Readers can take as many books as they want, for as long as they want - even permanently.
You probably think this policy would end very quickly - with Mr. Guanlao having no books at all. But, in fact,
in the 12 years since he opened his library, his collection has grown rather than diminished, as more and more
people donate to the cause.
3.________
Guanlao started his library in 2000 after the death of his parents. He was looking for something to honour their
memory; he decided to promote reading because his parents loved it. So he put his books - a collection of fewer
than 100 - outside the door of his house to see if anyone wanted to borrow them. They did, and they brought the
books back with others to add to the collection - and the library was born.
4.________
Guanlao confesses he has no idea how many books are in his possession now, but he believes about 3,000. On
the day we visited, some shop assistants came to look at books during their lunch break, a local man borrowed a
history book and some schoolchildren picked up some textbooks - although I noticed they were taking some
fashion magazines as well.
5.________
But it's people like Celine who sustain the library. She lives near Guanlao, and she arrived with two bags of
books - some of which she was returning, others of which she wanted to donate. She says she loves the concept
of the library because poorer Filipinos have limited access to books. "I haven't been to any public libraries
except the national library in Manila," she says, explaining it is not possible to borrow any books there. If she
wants to buy a book, the average price is about 300 pesos (£4.50), which is too expensive, she says. As we sat
outside Nanie Guanlao's house, he told me why he spends all his time maintaining the library."A book should be
used and reused. It has life, it has a message", he says.
