Nome e Cognome (First and last name): Politecnico di Torino - Ingegneria per l’autoveicolo STATISTICA - STATISTICS Prova scritta, 17 Febbraio 2009 - February 17th, 2009 L’esame è con libri e appunti. This is an open-book and open-note exam. Describe the logical steps of your answer in the blank spaces and write the final answer in the appropriate box. You may leave, by returning the exam text, up to half an hour before the end of the written exam. Discussion and registration of your exam will take place today. In a production process, screws are produced whose length is a random variable with normal distribution of parameters µ and σ 2 . Six screws are sampled and their measured lengths are equal to (5.54, 5.50, 5.70, 5.54, 5.20, 4.90) (cm). 1. Trovare una stima di µ. Find an estimate of µ. Risposta: 2. Trovare una stima di σ 2 . Find an estimate of σ 2 . Risposta: 1 3. Assume that the real values of µ and σ 2 are equal to the values estimated in point 1 and 2, compute the probability that a randomly selected screw has length smaller than 5 cm. Risposta: 4. Under the same assumptions as in point 3, compute the probability that two randomly selected screws have both length smaller than 5 cm. Risposta: 2 Problem 2 (8 points) summary(modello) Call: lm(formula = vendite ~ prezzo + promozione) Residuals: Min 1Q -1680.96 -406.40 Median 53.45 3Q 297.48 Max 1342.43 Coefficients: Estimate Std. A linear regression model has been implemented in R and has given the output above. Compute the best prediction of vendite corresponding to values prezzo = 59 and promozione = 200. Risposta: 2. Non basta dare solo una formula) Give a precise but very concise interpretation of the number -53.2173. (Be very brief:fewer than 40 words. A manufactured piece of metal is approximately a prism with a square base: let’s call it a tower. It is produced by stacking together on top of each other three pieces produced by three different providers. The pieces have heights X1 , X2 , X3 which are independent random variables with expectations µ1 = 5 cm, µ2 = 3 cm and µ3 = 4 cm respectively and uncertainties σ1 = 0.03 cm, σ2 = 0.01 cm and σ3 = 0.02 cm respectively. The height of the tower is then H = X1 + X2 + X3 . 1. calcolare il valore atteso di H. calculate the expected value of H. Risposta: 2. calcolare l’incertezza associata a H. calculate the uncertainty associated to H. Risposta: 3. supponiamo che il peso della torre sia 2H 3 grammi. Calcolate approssimativamente il peso atteso e l’incertezza del peso. suppose the weight of the tower is 2H 3 gram. Calculate the approximate expected weight and the uncertainty associated with the weight. Risposta: 4
