Gabriele Mastrigli, (Roma, 1969) architetto e critico, studia presso la RWTH di Aachen
(Germania) e l'Università "La Sapienza" dove si laurea cum laude nel 1998. Nel 2004 consegue il
Dottorato di Ricerca in Composizione Architettonica e Progettazione Urbana presso l'Università "G.
D'Annunzio" di Chieti-Pescara. La tesi, dal titolo L'architettura dei libri, tratta del complesso
rapporto tra scrittura e progetto architettonico, esaminando la produzione editoriale come forma
critica dell'architettura.
Dal 2003 al 2007 in qualità di Professore a contratto tiene corsi di Teorie della ricerca architettonica
contemporanea e di Progettazione architettonica presso la Scuola di Architettura e Design
dell'Università di Camerino nella quale, dall'aprile 2007, è Ricercatore T.D. nel settore disciplinare
ICAR/14.
Nel 2005 e 2007 è visiting critic presso la Cornell University Rome Program dove insegna nel
Laboratorio di progettazione architettonica.
Dal 2000 è invitato come guest critic e tiene conferenze presso diverse scuole e istituzioni
internazionali (Cornell University Ithaca-NY, Syracuse University, Berlage Institute Rotterdam,
Yale University, Guggenheim Museum New York, Bejing University of Technology, Ecole
Spéciale d'Architecture Paris, Architectural Association London).
Nel 2000-2005 è coordinatore per la Facoltà di Architettura di Ascoli Piceno del seminario di
progettazione internazionale Villard (con le Università di Camerino, Beirut, Genova, IUAV Venice,
Milano, Napoli, Palermo, Parma, Patrasso, Pescara, Reggio Calabria, Roma, Zagabria).
Scrive su riviste italiane e internazionali e collabora regolarmente con il quotidiano il manifesto e il
supplemento culturale Alias. Articoli e saggi sono apparsi, tra gli altri, su Abitare, Arquitectura
Viva, Domus, Log, Lotus International, Volume e la rivista cinese World Architecture. Nel 2002 ha
pubblicato con Pippo Ciorra il volume La metropoli dopo, una raccolta di saggi sulle metropoli
globali dopo l'11 settembre; nel 2006 a curato Junkspace. Per un ripensamento radicale dello
spazio urbano, un’antologia critica di saggi di Rem Koolhaas pubblicata da Quodlibet e tradotta in
Francia dall'editore Manuel Payot (2011).
Sta ora lavorando a una monografia sull'opera di Superstudio.
Inoltre dal 2000 al 2007 è consulente del Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali, Direzione
Generale Arte e Architettura Contemporanee, per la quale ha svolto ricerche sulla qualità
dell’architettura contemporanea (tra cui Italy abroad, una indagine sull’architettura italiana
all’estero) e curato l’organizzazione e la promozione di concorsi di architettura.
Nel 2002 ha rappresentato l'Italia al "European Seminar of Young Architects", promosso dalla UE e
tenutosi ad Anversa. Nel 2003 ha curato il simposio Unstable Media, tenutosi a Firenze e
organizzato da Image/Università di Firenze.
Dal 2004 cura i Mercoledì dell'Architettura di Ascoli Piceno. Incontri di Architettura e cultura
urbana", promossi dal Facoltà di Architettura di Ascoli Piceno, Dipartimento Procam, presso la
libreria Rinascita.
Nel 2006 ha curato (con Manuel Orazi) "Passività Radicale", un incontro con Peter Eisenman
presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Ascoli Piceno.
Per l’Ambasciata del Regno dei Paesi Bassi ha curato la mostra Holland-Italy 10 Works of
Architecture, che si è inaugurata al MAXXI di Roma nel maggio 2007 (catalogo Electa).
Nel 2008 è tra i curatori del Padiglione Italiano alla 11. Biennale Architettura di Venezia con la
mostra "L´Italia cerca casa / Housing Italy" (catalogo Electa).
Nel 2008-09 è curatore (con Marina Engel) del ciclo di mostre e conferenze London-Rome. Work in
Process, organizzate e ospitate dalla British School at Rome.
Nel 2010 è tra i curatori della Festa dell'Architettura di Roma.
Membro della giuria di diversi concorsi di Progettazione, nel 2007 e 2008 è advisor per il Premio
Nazionale di Architettura InArch ANCE.
Tra le conferenze e le partecipazioni a convegni internazionali, nel 2004 ha preso parte al convegno
internazionale Utopia e Tradimento, presso la Triennale di Milano. Nel 2005 ha partecipato al
convegno Italy now dedicato all'architettura italiana contemporanea, che si è svolto in due sessioni
alla Cornell University, Ithaca (USA) e all'Architecture Center di New York, alla 3. Biennale
Internazionale di Lubiana, al convegno Trace of memory. Talking with Peter Eisenman, a Palazzo
Vecchio, Firenze.
Nel 2006 ha preso parte al simposio Contamination. Impure Architecture, organizzato da Log
magazine e tenuto al Guggenheim museum di New York. Nel 2007 è intervenuto al Masterclass
Form and the City, organizzato all'interno della 3. Biennale di Architettura di Rotterdam dal
Berlage Institute e dal Buell Center, Columbia University.
Nel 2007 è intervenuto al convegno Public Space. Form, Presence, Politics, organizzato dalla
Syracuse University e dalla Fondazione Targetti (Firenze, Istituto degli Innocenti). Sempre nel 2007
ha tenuto una conferenza presso la Syracuse University Firenze sul tema Architecture in the Age of
Books.
Nel 2008-09 è invitato come consulente esperto dal Berlage Institute di Rotterdam per la ricerca
Rome: The Centre(s) Elsewhere. I risultati della ricerca sono stati presentati nella mostra omonima
aperta nel giugno 2010 all'interno della Festa dell'Architettura e pubblicati nel volume Rome: The
Centre(s) Elsewhere (Skira).
Nel 2009 e 2010 ha tenuto due conferenza all'Architectural Association di Londra sul tema Reading
S,M,L,XL e The lesson of Rome.
Nel 2010 è tra gli organizzatori della ricerca Rome Adriatic. Crossing italian territory along via
Salaria, condotta da Studio Basel/ ETH Zurich in collaborazione con le Università di Camerino, di
Pescara e Roma 3.
Gabriele Mastrigli (Rome, 1969) is an architect and critic. He studied at the RWTH Aachen,
Germany, and at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" where he graduated cum laude in 1998.
In 2004 he was awarded a Ph.D. in Theory of Architecture and Urban Design from the University
of Pescara. His dissertation topic - The Architecture of Books - is the complex relationship between
architects' designing and writing and is part of his research on publishing as a critical form of
architecture.
In the period 2003-2006 as adjunct Professor he has taught Theory of Architecture and Design
Studio at Ascoli Piceno School of Architecture (University of Camerino) where, since april 2007 is
Ricercatore T.D.
In 2005 (Fall) and 2007 (Spring) he was visiting critic at Cornell University Rome Program for
Architecture Studio.
Since 2000 he is visiting lecturer and guest critic with several international schools (among them
Cornell University Ithaca-NY, Syracuse University, Berlage Institute Rotterdam, Yale University,
Guggenheim Museum New York, Bejing University of Technology, Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture
Paris).
In the period 2000-2005 he has been coordinator for the School of Architecture of Ascoli Piceno, of
the international design workshop Villard (featuring the Universities of Ascoli Piceno, Beirut,
Genua, IUAV Venice, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Parma, Patrasso, Pescara, Reggio Calabria, Rome,
Zagreb).
He writes for Italian and international architecture magazines and is a regular contributor to the
national daily newspaper il manifesto and its cultural supplement Alias, and to the most important
Italian architectural webzine Arch’it (ww.architettura.it). His articles and essays have appeared in
Abitare, Arquitectura Viva, Domus, Log, Lotus international, Volume and the Chinese magazine
World Architecture. In 2002 together with Pippo Ciorra he published the book La metropoli dopo: a
collection of essays about the global metropolis after 11.09. In 2006 he was the editor of Junkspace,
a critical antology of texts by Rem Koolhaas, published by Quodlibet, translated in French by
Manuel Payot (2011).
He is now working on a monograph about Superstudio.
In 2000-2007 he has been a consultant to the Italian Ministry of Culture's Department of
Contemporary Art and Architecture (PARC). Among his activities there are researches on
contemporary Italian Architecture culture and the organization of architecture competitions
promoted by PARC.
Also in 2002 he represented Italy at the "European Seminar on Young Architects", promoted by EU
and held in Antwerp. In 2003 he was curator of the international conference Unstable Media, held
in Florence and organised by iMage Magazine/the University of Florence.
Since 2004 he is the curator of the Mercoledì dell'Architettura di Ascoli Piceno. Meetings of
Architecture and Urban Culture, promoted by the School of Architecture of Ascoli Piceno,
Department PROCAM, held in the bookshop Rinascita.
In 2006 organized (with Manuel Orazi) Radical Passivity, a meeting with Peter Eisenman at Ascoli
Piceno School of Architecture.
In 2007 he was the curator of the exhibition Holland-Italy 10 Works of Architecture, promoted by
the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Rome and hosted by the MAXXI-National Museum of the 21st
Century Arts (catalogue Electa).
In 2008 he was among the curators of the Italian Pavilion at the 11. Venice Biennale with the
exhibition L´Italia cerca casa / Housing Italy (catalogue Electa)
In 2008-2009 he is the curator (with Marina Engel) of the cycle of exhibitions and. lectures on the
theme “London-Rome: Work in Progress", organized by and held at the British School in Rome.
In 2010 is among the curators of the Festa dell'Architettura di Roma.
He ha been Juror in some International Design Competitions. In 2007 and 2008 he is advisor for the
International Architecture Prize Inarch ANCE.
Among his lectures and participation at international conferences, in 2004 he has taken part to the
Utopia and Betrayal international conference held at the Triennale di Milano. In 2005 he lectured at
the Italy now two-days conference about contemporary Italian architecture at Cornell University,
Ithaca, and Architecture Center, New York. Also in 2005 he has lectured in the 3rd Ljubljana
International Architecture Biennale and has taken part to the conference Trace of memory. Talking
with Peter Eisenman, Palazzo Vecchio, Florence.
In 2006 he has taken part in the symposium Contamination. Impure Architecture, organized by Log
magazine and held at the Guggenheim Museum, New York (published in Log10). In 2007 he
lectured in the Masterclass Form and the City organized by the at the 3rd Architecture Biennale
Rotterdam in conjunction with Berlage Institute and Buell Center, Columbia University.
