San Fedele’s Basilica The basilica was built as a place of pilgrimage in honor of San Fedele , a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and then martyred . Its construction can be traced back in 1120 but you can not specify a single date of construction because the complex was begun much earlier and completed time dopo.La current facade is a reconstruction of the 1914 neo-Romanesque Antonio Giussani but retains the Renaissance rose window in the center of the original façade dating back to 1509 and the main entrance and the side with a decorative mosaic depicting Christ added in 1968 and the symbols of the Eucharist. The bell tower is also a modern replacement. In the years 1903-1907 was demolished to a height of 11 meters and then rebuilt from scratch. Currently it looks like a typical Romanesque bell tower square , divided into four successive orders of arches with three-light , mullioned windows . In the belfry contains the three bells , the first two made in 1842 and the third in 1962. The house on the left of the basilica is relevant to the complex of San Fedele having been granted in 1109 by the Bishop to his canonical Grima for the sale of bread and wine. The restoration work has brought to light a fresco with floral motifs and animals under the roof of the house. In front of the basilica atrium porch that stretched across the square to reach the Baptistery of S. John ( now present in a bar) where the Holy Saturday blessed water for the diocese .
