W. Funk in ‘Albrecht Dürer, Festschrift der internationalen Dürer-Forschung, herausgegeben vom Cicerone’, Lipsia-Berlino 1928, pp 107-111). ALBRECHT DÜRER Nuremberg 1471 - 1528 1. THE VIRGIN AND CHILD SEATED BY A WALL – 1514 Engraving, signed with monogram and dated in the right side. Bartsch 40; Meder, p. 84 n. 36 Ib/c-II; Schoch-Mende-Scherbaum, p. 187, n.73 Ib/c- II mm 147 x 101 A fine silvery Meder Ib impression, printed with plate tone on paper without watermark, in very good condition, with small margins all around. The sheet was executed in the same period of ‘Melencolia I’ and the two engravings have some affinity in the composition that are not casual, but they are also different in the formal and psychological characters. Both are located outdoor, with the same keys aroud the waist, the same money bag and the child wears the same shirt. But the atmosphere is very different in the two composition: the Virgin, with her serene light contrast with the uneasiness of Melancolia, caressed by livid light of the moon. In the background W. Funk has recognized a Nuremberg view, taken from one of the windows in Dürer’s house, which he had bought in 1509. (cfr. W. Funk in ‘Albrecht Dürer, Festschrift der internationalen Dürer-Forschung, herausgegeben vom Cicerone’, Lipsia-Berlin 1928, pp 107-111). 4 ALBRECHT DÜRER Norimberga 1471 – 1528 2. CRISTO NELL’ORTO DEGLI ULIVI, 1515 Acquaforte Meder 19 Ia (II/e); Schoch-Mende-Scherbaum n. 80 mm 222 x 156 Provenienze: Gabinetto delle Stampe di Monaco come ‘doublette’ (Lugt. 1614). CHRIST IN THE GARDEN OF OLIVES, 1515 Etching on laid paper Meder 19 Ia (II/e); Schoch-Mende-Scherbaum n. 80 mm 222 x 156 Provenance: Prints Cabinet of Munich as ‘doublette’ (Lugt. 1614). Auction Gutekunst-Klipstein, Bern, 27-28 November 1947, catalogue n. 205 Swiss Private collection, collection mark ‘SRS’ not in Lugt. Superb impression, before any oxidation spot, in very good condition, with the exception of a very small tear at the bottom left of the monogram and a small printer’s crease in the right border, with small margins all around. The impressions preceding the oxidation spots are rather rare. 6 ANDREA MELDOLLA, detto LO SCHIAVONE Zara 1510 /15– Venezia 1563 3. GESÚ CRISTO E LE DONNE SULLA SCALA, 1541/44 Acquaforte e puntasecca Bartsch, vol. XVI, pag. 29, n. 14; T.I.B., vol. 32, pag. 50, n. 14 (47); F. L. Richardson, 1980, pag. ANDREA MELDOLLA, called LO SCHIAVONE Zara 1510 /15– Venice 1563 3. CHRIST AND WOMEN ON THE STAIRCASE, 1541/44 Etching and drypoint Bartsch, vol. XVI, p. 29, n. 14; T.I.B., vol.32, p. 50, n. 14 (47); F. L. Richardson, 1980, p. 83, n. 14; Ger Luijten ‘La Bella Maniera- Drukgraphike des Manierismus aus Sammlung Georg Baselitz’, Bern, Berlin, p. 178, n. 62 mm 209 x 141; sheet mm 213 x 144 Provenance: W. Scharp Collection (L. 2650) initial in pen on the verso, Manchester XIX Century; J.P.Heseltine Collection, London, 1843, (L.1508, red mark, on the verso), the collector bought most of Schiavone’s drawing by Colnaghi in 1912, and he signed with Lugt 1507 mark on the verso; the red mark, Lugt 1508 was placed by the collector on the verso of the sheets that he wished to keep for himself. Fine impression, on coeval paper with indistinct watermark. Printed with plate-tone that gives special atmospheric tones similar to those that the artist gets in chiaroscuro and drawings. Our impression is early, with wiping scratches, before the appearance of the two hole in the upper and in the lower side of the sheet: the oxidation spot are in fact still evident, typical of the early impressions, due to the platemark support, probably pewter. In fine condition, with margins all around. Very rare impression with well-known provenances. In this beautiful sheet Christ is depicted with his left hand raised while he stand in front of a staircase, where some women are seated in the act of listening with devotion to his words. Other female figures, at the top of the staircase, invite Christ to rise. In the lower part of the composition two disciples converse, and one of them pointing with his right hand the Messiah. It is probable that the composition refers to Matthew’s Gospel (15, 21-8). Richardson locates the sheet in the second phase of Schiavone’s activity, around the 1541/44, when he is very close to Parmigianino’s style. The researcher pointed out also the Central Italian influences on the artist in particular Francesco Salviati, as we can see in the faces of the female figures in the upper part of the composition. 8 GIULIO SANUTO Venezia attivo dal 1540 c.- al 1588 4. BACCANALE IN UNA FORESTA, 1550 c. Bulino, firmato in basso a destra: ‘iulius sannutus f’ Bartsch, 1803-1821 XV, n. 3; Nagler 1835-52, pag. 8 n. 9; Passavant 1860-64 VI, pag. 105, n. 5; Rearick, Firenze, 1976, pag. 103, n. 62; TIB, vol. 31, pag. 366; Bury, Edimburgo, 1990, pag. Lutz Riester nel catalogo ‘A Miscellany of Old Master and Modern Prints’, LondonFreiburg, 1992, pag. GIULIO SANUTO Active in Venice from 1540 ca – 1588 ca 4. BACCHANAL, 1550 c. Engraving, signed lower right ‘iulius sannutus f’ Bartsch, 1803-1821 XV, n. 3; Nagler 1835-52, p. 8 n. 9; Passavant 1860-64 VI, p. 105, n. 5; Rearick, Florence, 1976, p. 103, n. 62; TIB, vol. 31, p. 366; Bury, Edimburgh, 1990, pp. 42-43, n. 3 mm 456 x 558; sheet mm 465 x 570 Fine impression, printed with plate tone on two sheet of paper with watermark ‘Anchor in a circle’, in very good condition, with a small margin from 3 to 7 millimeters all around, two small tears in the margins, in very good condition. Very rare. In addition to the impressions listed by Bury in London, Oxford and Vienna, there are impressions in New York, Hamburg and Rotterdam. The ‘Bacchanal’ ranks among the great prints of the Italian 16th century, both in its graphic achievement and his weird subject matter. It translates in the same direction a pen and ink drawing in the Uffizi attributed by Rearick to Domenico Campagnola and dated ca. 1516. Rearick points out the strongly Mantegnesque flavor of this composition: the print marks a new departure in Sanuto’s work after the early engravings. 10 GIORGIO GHISI Mantova 1520 – 1582 5. ALLEGORIA DELLA VITA, 1561 Bulino Michal-R.E. Lewis ‘The ‘Engraving of Giorgio Ghisi’, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1984, pag. 114, n. 28 IIa/VI mm 378 x 341 Provenienza: Collezione P. Mariette 1634 – 1716, mercante di stampe a Parigi; Lugt n. 1788, antica scritta a penna, al verso. ‘P. F.I.5.6.I.’ GIORGIO GHISI Mantua 1520 – 1582 5. ALLEGORY OF LIFE, 1561 Engraving on laid paper Michal-R.E. Lewis ‘The ‘Engraving of Giorgio Ghisi’, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1984, p. 114, n. 28 IIa/VI mm 378 x 341 Provenance: Collection P. Mariette 1634 - 1716, print dealer in Paris; Lugt n. 1788, written in ink, on the verso. ‘P. Mariette 1692’ A very fine, dark- brilliant impression, of this very rare, famous and enigmatic engraving, one of the masterpieces of Italian Renaissance, in the very rare second state of six (we know only one impression, in the first state, at the British Museum ,inv. C 63, Cracherode Collection), printed with tone and strong contrast on paper without watermark, before any publisher’s address. The guidelines of the lower inscription are visible and this is a characteristic of the early impressions. Trimmed between the borderline and the image, but showing a thin stripe of white paper all around. The lower left corner slight creased and abraded, small marginal imperfections at the edges, a horizontal tear on the upper central part of the print and a tear in lower right part of the composition. There is a central crease visible especially on the verso. Should be noted that this print is very rare in the trade and usually we find it not in very good condition. If we consider the size of the sheet, the condition of our print are very good. The subject of the engraving derives from a Raphael’s composition. On a tablet bottom left the inscription ‘Raphaelis urbinatis inventum./Philippus datus animi gratia/ fieri iussit’ (Raphael of Urbino invented it. Philippus Datus commissioned it for the good of his soul). At the center ‘Sedet aeternum/que sedebit ifoelix’ (The unhappy one sits and will sit forever) (Aeneid, VI. 617). On a small tablet in the boat ‘Giorgius Ghisi Mat/. F.I.5.6.I.’ On the bottom right ‘Tu ne cede malis: sed/ cotra audentior ito’ (Do not yield to adversities, but go out to meet them bravely) ( Aeneid, VI. 95). In the four centuries since the print was created this enigmatic image has provoked most interest and has been discussed in numerous commentaries. 12 GIORGIO GHISI Mantova 1520 – 1582 6. VENERE E ADONE, 1570 c. Bulino, monogrammato in basso a sinistra Bartsch 42; Lewis-Lewis, 1985, pag. 147, n. 42 II/VII; Bellini, 1998, pag. GIORGIO GHISI Mantua 1520 – 1582 6. VENUS AND ADONIS, 1570 c. Engraving, Ghisi’s monogram lower left. Bartsch 42; Lewis-Lewis, 1985, p. 147, n. 42 II/VII; Bellini, 1998, p. 143, n.31 II/VII mm 321 x 222; sheet mm 323 x 224 Provenance: private collection. Very good impression, brilliant and well-inked, rich of soft tone, printed with plate tone on coeval paper, in the rare second state of seven; in the first state is known only one impression. In very good condition, small margins all around behind the platemark or with the platemark visible, fold print on the verso in the lower side of the sheet. After a painting of Teodoro Ghisi, now lost: inscribed on a tablet lower left ‘Teodoro Ghisi in’. Venus and Adonis are depicted embraced in the central part of the composition, in the background, on the right, the episode of the death of Adonis killed by a wild boar, in the foreground a Putto holds a hare’s ear, animal sacred to Venus, on the right is depicted the struggle between lizard and the snake, symbol of good and danger. 14 GIUSEPPE NICOLO’ VICENTINO Vicenza 1525 c.- attivo a Roma, Venezia e Bologna 1550 7. L’ADORAZIONE DEI MAGI, 1540-50 Chiaroscuro a tre legni nei toni del marrone scuro, marrone chiaro ed ocra Bartsch XII, 29, 2 II/II; C. Karpinski, 1983, Illustrated Bartsch, vol. 48, pag. ‘Old Master Prints from Chatswort’, lotto 116, 3 - dicembre). GIUSEPPE NICOLO’ VICENTINO Vicenza 1525 c.- active in Rome, Venice and Bologna 1550 7. THE ADORATION OF THE MAGI, 1540-50 Chiaroscuro woodcut from three blocks in dark brown, light brown and ochre Bartsch XII, 29, 2 II/II; C. Karpinski, 1983, Illustrated Bartsch, vol. 48, p. 26, n. 2 (29), II/II. mm 166 x 242 After Parmigianino On the left Andreani’s monogram and the date ‘1555’. A very nice impression, particularly fresh, with soft shades and white reliefs, in dark brown, light brown and ochre tones, with the borderline complete, rich of gaufrage on the verso, characteristic of the early and unwashed impressions. On the left is depicted Mary with the Child on her knees, with the oldest of the Magi bowed down her feet. In the center, the second embraces Giuseppe while a servant offers a vase as a gift to the third of the Magi. In the central part of the composition there is a staircase that conduct at the superior floor in which are visible the head of an ox and of a donkey. In the right side there is a camel followed by a caravan. In 1605 Andrea Andreani realized a woodcut from this composition, and he placed his monogram and the date in the lower left side. The model for the chiaroscuro woodcut is a Parmigianino’s drawing that is conserved in Louvre (inv. N. 6377), Popham 1971, n. 358. The same composition inspires Schiavone, another lovers of Parmigianino works, who realized a woodcut with some variant compared to the prototype (Bartsch XVI,43, n.8). A similar sheet, in the second state, was sold at Christie’s London in 1985 (see ‘Old Master Prints from Chatswort’, lot 116, 3th - December). In the Uffizi are preserved two impressions with the Andreani’s monogram and the date on the left (inventory n. 90 and 95886). The artist is mentioned by Vasari in the life of Marcantonio Raimondi: the writer inform us that, after Parmigianino death in 1540, Niccolò used the drawings of the Master as a model for his woodcuts. ‘I b’ a Berlino). HERCULES AND CACUS, 1588 Chiaroscuro woodcut from three blocks, printed in black, yellow-ochre and olive-green Bartsch 231; Hirschmann, 373, III-3; Hollstein 373; Strauss 403 II/IV; Bialler 25 I c (of f, of VI); Leesberg (New Hollstein) 304 I e.; TIB 0301.231. mm 404 x 328 A fine impression, in the first state ‘c’ of six, Bialler 25 I c ( of f- of VI), printed on paper with ‘grapes in a shield ’ watermark (paper mill ‘J. Gouault’), similar to Briquet, n. 13215, datable on 1579-1586, before the wormhole on the right thumb of Cacus. In very good condition, the colours brilliantly fresh and well registered, with complete borderline and small margins on top and on the right edge. In very good unwashed condition, apart from the horizontal drying fold, with gaufrage on the verso. Draftsman, printmaker and painter, Hendrick Goltzius is one of the principal figure in Northern Mannerism and has a special place in the history of the chiaroscuro woodcut. His work depicts mythological subjects as well as portraits and landscapes in the Venetian tradition. ‘Hercules and Cacus’ is his largest, earliest and only dated woodcut. Nancy Bialler has been able to trace six states in no less than eight different colour combinations, all of which she presented in the chiaroscuro print exhibition in Amsterdam and Cleveland (1992-93). The earliest impressions show more subtle and balanced colour schemes. Our print is one of these very early impressions and, according to Bialler’s description, there exist only two earlier states of each impression (‘I a’ in Paris and ‘I b’ in Berlin). Together with three impressions of state ‘I c’, to which this one must be added, she called them ‘the earliest impressions’, differing only in the colour tone. Hercules and Cacus was erroneously associated to an episode from the ‘Twelve Labors of Hercules’. In fact, although there is a connection with the ‘Twelve Labors’, the story was told by Ovid (Fasti I, 545-578)1. Hercules capturing the cattle of Geryon. Cacus, the son of Vulcan, stole eight of Hercules’s cattle and hid them in his cave, then he blocked the entrance by chaining a boulder across the mouth. Hercules pursued him, broke in to the cave through the roof, and defeated him. Goltzius shows Hercules at his moment of triumph. In fine condition, with a small printer’s crease in the lower right corner, trimmed outside the borderline and retaining a stripe of white paper all around. Griffiths and Hartley underline that the nature of the print, combining etching and stippling recall the printed sources provided by Salimbeni and Barocci and particularly the famous print by the Urbino’s Master, ‘The Annunciation’. The variety of the etched techniques and the research of lights and shadow in the drapery of the Virgin, indicate a strong command of the medium. In good condition, apart two printer’s creases in the middle of the composition and another up in the left in the white paper, and small restoration on the extreme edge of the three margins, trimmed within the platemark on the bottom. This impression belongs to a series of four sheet, that represent female figures: this graceful gardeners show a tradition typical of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth Century that represent the various trades and occupations of life. According to the most recent literature (Griffiths-Hartley, p. 113), the artist, exceeded the tradition and inspired by the ancient world, reached very refined effects: our Jardinière advances in elegant way and she announces the world of court and feast: she wears antique-style shoes and a urns that evokes the Mannerism and Fontainebleau style. I GOBBI, 1618-1622 Acquaforte e bulino Lieure 279 I/II, mm 59 x 85 all’impronta Dal Lieure 408 al 426 variano le misure: all’impronta mm 56/66 a mm 80 x 90. JACQUES CALLOT Nancy 1592 – 1635 11. THE HUNCHBACKS, 1618-1622 Etching and engraving Lieure 279, I/II, to the platemark mm 59 x 85 From Lieure 408 to 426 different sizes: to the platemark mm 56/66 to mm 80 x 90. Fine, well inked impressions, printed with plate tone on coeval paper, in the first state of two, the second plate have just one state. In very good condition, with regular margins all around. This is the complete series of the work ‘The Hunchbacks’, composed by 21 plates in the first state. In the second state the series is composed by 20 impressions because the second plate was lost. This Series is one of the most popular of Callot, and with the other well-known ‘ S. Anthony’s Temptations’ Callot was accredited during the Romantic Age as an artist grotesque and fantastic, inspired by Flemish Art, in particular by the art of Brueghel the Elder and by the German Art of the XVI century. In reality the origin of this composition is all Italian and derives from the troops of hunchbacks, deformed dwarfs, that traverse Italy taking part to court celebrations and popular events. The prints, excluded the frontispiece engraved in Florence in 1616, was realized in Nancy. 24 REMBRANDT HARMENSZ VAN RIJN Leida 1606 - Amsterdam 1669 12. STUDI CON LA TESTA DI SASKIA E ALTRE TESTINE, 1636 Acquaforte, firmata e datata in lastra ‘Rembrandt f 1636’ Bartsch-Hollstein 365; White-Boon, 1969, pag. 160 B 365; Nowell-Usticke, 1988, B 365 I/II; Biörklund-Barnard, pag. Zoelen 2939’. REMBRANDT HARMENSZ VAN RIJN Leyden 1606 - Amsterdam 1669 12. SHEET OF STUDIES WITH SASKIA AND THE HEAD OF AN OLD MAN, 1636 Etching, signed and dated on the platemark ‘Rembrandt f 1636’ Bartsch-Hollstein 365; White-Boon, 1969, p. 160 B 365; Nowell-Usticke, 1988, B 365 I/II; Biörklund-Barnard, p. 72, 36 B, unique state. mm 152 x 125 Provenance: Chevalier J. Camberlyn Collection, Bruxelles 1783-1861, (L. 514), ‘JDB’ Collection not in Lugt; inscribed on the verso ‘Vente Verstolk v. Zoelen 2939’. Very good coeval impression, with visible wiping scratches on the head in the foreground. In very good condition, with margins all around beyond the inked platemark. In this etching, similar to a drawing, Rembrandt depicted, according to the most recent criticism, five portraits of his wife Saskia, in various poses, and a face of an elderly man. This is a fascinating sheet for its delicate psychological penetration and for its naturalistic research, and it is in contrast with the elaborate portraits of the previous years, 1633-35. 26 REMBRANDT HARMENSZ VAN RIJN Leida 1606 - Amsterdam 1669 13. L’ANGELO SI ALLONTANA DALLA FAMIGLIA DI TOBIA, 1641 Acquaforte e puntasecca, firmata e datata in basso a sinistra ‘Rembrandt f. 1641’ Bartsch-Hollstein, 43; Hind, 185; White-Boon, 1969, pag. 21, B 43 II/IV; Biörklund-Barnard, 1988, pag. 85. 41-G II/VI; Minder, 1997, pag. REMBRANDT HARMENSZ VAN RIJN Leyden 1606 - Amsterdam 1669 13. THE ANGEL DEPARTING FROM THE FAMILY OF TOBIAS, 1641 Etching and drypoint, signed and dated lower left ‘Rembrandt f. 1641’ Bartsch-Hollstein, 43; Hind, 185; White-Boon, 1969, p. 21, B 43 II/IV; Biörklund-Barnard, 1988, p. 85. 41-G II/VI; Minder, 1997, p. 64, n. 16 II/IV mm 102 x 153; sheet mm 106 x 158 Ancient inscription in pen on the verso ‘43’ Very good impression, printed with plate tone, in the second state of four, before the addition of the vertical and horizontal lines in the upper left corner and the vertical lines in the upper right edge, with drypoint trait behind the head of Tobias. Printed on coeval paper, with touches of burr in the lower part of the composition. In this subject Rembrandt illustrates an episode of the life of Tobias (Tobias XII, 16-22), who on the return from a long trip, wants to reward a friend by helping his father’s blindness Tobita. Rembrandt captures the moment during which the traveler, who reveals to be Archangel Raphael, leaves behind himself Tobia’s house on a light which inspired a miraculous event. The scene recall a woodcut of Maarten van Heemskerck. The impression is related to Rembrandt’s painting of the 1637, preserved in Louvre. 28 GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE, detto IL GRECHETTO Genova 1609 – Mantova 1664 14. DIOGENE CERCA L’UOMO, 1640-45 Acquaforte, firmata in basso a sinistra ‘G. Bened. s Castiglionus / in P’ Bartsch 21; Bellini 16; G. Dillon, 1990, pag. GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE, called IL GRECHETTO Genoa 1609 – Mantua 1665 14. DIOGENES SEARCHING FOR AN HONEST MAN, 1640-45 Etching, signed lower left, ‘G. Very good impression, printed with plate tone, in the second state of two, on laid paper with watermark, ‘Shield with kneeling saint, holding a cross’, (Briquet 7628). In fine conditions, with large uncut margins. Diogenes the Cynic was a philosopher of the fourth century BC who disdained institutions, pretense and any material attachment. He searched in vain for human being living according to the philosopher’s ascetic values, with a lantern in broad daylight. The archeological remain items are reminders of the vanity of life. The etching, mentioned by Ratti (I 1768, p. 313) as ‘one of the more estimated of Castiglione’, was judged by Bartsch as ‘one of the best work of Benedetto’ (1821, p. 21). The relations between Castiglione and Rembrandt, so important for the scholars, become a subject of many studies, but is very important also study the relationship between Castiglione and Giambattista Tiepolo as did H. Diane Russel1. GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI Mogliano Veneto 1720 – Rome 1778 21. GROTTESCHI O CAPRICCI, 1747 c. THE TOMB OF NERO Etching Focillon n. 22; Robison 23 III/VI mm 392 x 544; sheet mm 565x804 Very fine impression, printed on paper with watermark ‘Lily in a double circle with letter B above and letter V below’, corresponding to Robison’s watermark 32, used by Piranesi between 1756 and 1761. In excellent fresh condition, with the usual centerfold, full margins. From the Series ‘I Grotteschi’, composed by fours etchings : ‘The Skeleton’ (R. 21); ‘The Triumphal Arch’ (R.22); ‘The Tomb of Nero’ (R. 23); ‘The Monumental Tablet ‘(R. 24). Piranesi was inspired by many sources for the Grotteschi: Giambattista Tiepolo’s ‘Scherzi’, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione’s etchings and Salvator Rosa’s compositions. Architect, draughtsman, theorist and engraver, Giovanni Battista Piranesi was an influential figure in the development of Neoclassicism. Giambattista’s initial pursuits were in architecture, for which he was apprenticed to his uncle Matteo Lucchesi. He later turned to etching and studied with Carlo Zucchi before traveling to Rome in 1740. It was in Rome that Piranesi produced his first popular etchings, and became famous for his depictions of ancient ruins and imaginary reconstructions of Roman architecture. One of his earliest collections, ‘Carceri d’Invenzione’, was published in 1745 and featured depictions of imaginary prisons based on existing Roman ruins. Though he was known as an engraver during his life, Piranesi also supported himself by dealing and restoring Roman antiquities. Piranesi had a lifelong interest in archaeology, and published treatises on the subject such as ‘Trofei e Archi di Trionfo’(1748) and ‘Antichità Romanae de Tempi della Repubblica de primi imperatori’ (1756). Near the end of his life, he traveled to southern Italy to pursue his archaeological interests, and began producing images of Greek architecture. 44 GIANDOMENICO TIEPOLO Venezia 1727 – 1804 22. DUE SOGGETTI DELLA FUGA IN EGITTO, 1746- 47 c. Acquaforte Rizzi,1971, n. 65-66; Succi ‘I Tiepolo’, 1986, n. 6 mm 191 x 260, misure del foglio mm 228 x 285 Iscrizioni: in basso a sinistra ‘Joannes Batta Tiepolo inv.’ a destra ‘Jo.Dominicus Filius fecite’. GIANDOMENICO TIEPOLO Venice 1727 – 1808 22. TWO SUBJECTS OF THE FLIGHT IN EGYPT, 1746-47 Etching, after Giambattista Tiepolo Rizzi,1971, n. 65-66; Succi ‘I Tiepolo’, 1986, n. 6 mm 191 x 260,sheet mm 228 x 285 A very fine, brilliant impression, in the only state, printed with plate tone on paper with ‘letter V’ countermark, with good margins all around and well-inked platemark. In fine, fresh condition. This sheet is earlier than the series ‘Flight into Egypt’, which is dedicated by the artist to PrinceArchbishop von Greiffenklau in Würzburg. Both subjects derives from drawings of Giambattista in Orloff collection. The print is rare, perhaps because it was not widespread by Giandomenico that decided to publish after, between 1750 and 1753, the beautiful series the ‘Flight into Egypt’, composed by 24 plates, in which the same subject is treated always in an original way. Giandomenico Tiepolo, Giambattista eldest’s son, who trained in his father’s studio, had been producing commissioned works since the age of twenty. He collaborated in his family enterprise in the decoration of churches and palaces in Italy, Germany and Spain. He began etching when he was a teenager and he devoted much time to it. He became an accomplished master in both reproductive and original prints. The most important work of his own inventions is ‘The flight in Egypt’. 46 GIANDOMENICO TIEPOLO Venezia 1727 – 1808 23. Created in groups over nearly twenty years, they were published as the Raccolta di Teste (Collection of Heads) in 1773-1774. STUDY OF HEADS Etching De Vesme n 17; Gozzi n 15 II/II mm 106x154 Monogrammed in lower center: ‘GGF’ Very fine impression, brilliant and well-inked, in the second state of two, monogrammed ‘GGF’ in lower center, printed on laid paper, without watermarks. In excellent condition, with regular margins all around. This is a rare print and is attributed by De Vesme to Gaetano Gandolfi in 1906, in fact he have seen an impression in the Cabinet of Prints of the National Library of Parma. The sheet was erroneously attributed by Nagler (N. II, 3006) to Ch. G. Geisler. Fausto Gozzi, in his Catalogue on Gandolfi’s prints, published another fine impression of our etching, which is in private collection (n. 15). The sheet illustrate a ‘Capriccio’ of heads. In the foreground there is a man with mustache, turban and a plume that is depicted frontally, and on his shoulder there is the artist’s Monogram ‘GGF’. On the left we can see two profiles of female face and on the right side there are in the shade, other two profiles of male face. This pleasure for the ‘capricci’ of heads met the fashion of that time and it gave the opportunity to Gaetano, Ubaldo and Mauro to draw graceful and refined group of heads. The great success of this ‘capricci of heads’ is well-documented also in the existence of an album, composed by 23 etchings made by Luigi Tadolini (1758-1823); the complete series is conserved in Arts and Archeology Library Jacques Doucet in Paris (D. Biagi Maino, 1994, ‘Gaetano Gandolfi’s capricci of heads: drawings and engravings’, in The Burlington Magazine, CXXXVI, n. 1905, June, pp 375-379). FRANCISCO GOYA Y LUCIENTES Fuente de Todos 1746 – Bordeaux 1828 25. PORQUE ESCONDERLOS? WHY HIDE THEM? Plate 30 of ‘Los Caprichos’ , Harris 65, from the first edition of twelve, of 1799, the only edition printed during the lifetime of the artist. Our sheet is one of 300 impressions of this edition. ‘Los Caprichos’, Masterpieces of the graphic production of Goya, are animated by a caustic satire and dark examination of human weakness. The extraordinary popularity reached by the artist in this Series is partly due to the subjects that invite imaginative interpretation and for their light humor, far from the seriousness of the Series ‘Los Desastres de la Guerra’. Most of the engravings have been interpreted as a satirical caricatures directed against the Church, the Inquisition, the Government and the Royal Family. Goya’s commentary: ‘The answer is easy. The reason he doesn’t want to spend them and does not spend is because although he is over eighty and cannot live another month, he still fears that he will live long enough to lack money. So mistaken are the calculation of avarice’. 52 Fuente de Todos 1746 – Bordeaux 1828 26 a. 26 b. 26 c. 26 d. GIOVANNI FATTORI Livorno 1825 – Florence 1908 27. THE BLACK BULL Etching on copper, signed on the plate bottom left ‘GFattori’ Baboni, CXXXIV; Bonagura 48; Servolini 153. mm 183 x 282; sheet mm 195 x 290 An extremely fine impression, printed with black ink on white wove paper. The print shows an extensive work in the inking, using a ‘veil’ in the research of the effects of light and shadow on the animal and on the ground. In very fine condition, except a little lack in the lower left corner that does not concern the platemark, with margins all around. The plate is preserved in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe of Uffizi (Inv. 132 M). Our impression is very close to that of Rosselli Collection (Bonagura, n. 48), very fresh and wellinked and with the same use of the ‘veil’ of ink in the research of the effects of light and shadow. 56 GIOVANNI FATTORI Livorno 1825–Firenze 1908 28. GUARDIANI DI PORCI Acquaforte su zinco Baboni–Malesci XCVIII; Timpanaro n. 316 pag. 82; Servolini tav. 75; Bonagura n. 77 pag. In condizioni eccellenti, tagliata all’esterno della linea d’inquadramento. GIOVANNI FATTORI Livorno 1825–Florence 1908 28. SWINEHERDSMAN Zinc etching Baboni-Malesci XCVIII; Timpanaro n. 316 p. 82; Servolini tav. 75; Bonagura n. 77 p. 58. mm 155 x 153 An extremely fine, wiped clean impression of an apparently unrecorded early variant before four diagonal scratches in the top left side of the print. Printed on white wove paper, the exemplar shows the utmost clarity of the more lightly etched lines, with clear details that makes it almost seem like a pen drawing. We have compared this impression with three other at the GDSU Uffizi: Gam 279 (Rosselli Collection) and Gam 368 are fine wiped clean impressions, after the scratches, not reaching, however, the finer details of this impression. Another impression, GDUS 21481, is printed with rich surface tone, to mask the relative weakness of the lighter etched areas. Trimmed just outside the borderline, pasted on thick cardboard. 58 TELEMACO SIGNORINI Firenze 1835 -1901 29. TELEMACO SIGNORINI Florence 1835 – 1901 29. MERCATO VECCHIO, COLONNA DELLA DOVIZIA, 1874 Zinc etching and drypoint, with monogram of the artist lower left and signed in pencil by the artist. mm 365 x 238; sheet 653 x 474 A superb, early impression with wiping scratches and plate tone, printed on ivory wove paper, signed with the monogram lower left, and signed in pencil by the artist lower right. In very good, untreated condition, except a small tear restored at the left edge of the sheet, with large uncut margins. The present etching, exemplifies his remarkable technical skills and his modern approach to the medium with amazing effects of light and shade. Signorini belonged to a circle of young artists that gathered regularly at Caffé Michelangelo in Florence. In 1861 Signorini travelled to Paris, where he saw works of the Barbizon School and met Corot and Courbet. From 1859 Signorini was considered, together with Giovanni Fattori and Silvestro Lega, one of the leading exponents of the Macchiaioli, the Italian variant of en plein air painters. During his life Signorini’s relationship to the French modernists, with such masters of French Impressionism as Manet and Degas grew stronger. Like the French master, Signorini was fascinated by the variety of expressive devices in printmaking and experimented with new printing techniques. 60 MARIANO FORTUNY Y MARSAL (Tarragona 1838 - Roma 1874) 30. Signed with a stamp, that reproduce the signature of the artist, in the lower right. This impression belonging to the second edition (1878). A very fine, atmospheric impression, well-inked, printed with plate-tone on japon paper, rich of wiping scratches. In fine condition, unwashed, unpressed, with margins all around. Rare. The etching occupies a significant place in the production of Mariano Fortuny. The principal repositories of his work are preserved in the Calcografia Nazionale of Rome, in the National Library of Madrid, and in the Museum of Ca’ Pesaro, in Venice, as the donation of his wife, Henriette Nigrin. The engravings of Fortuny’s father were appreciated by the great French critic Théophile Gautier. The prints are informed by the taste and the atmosphere of the Flemish and Spanish painters. Fortuny cultivated a technique that recalls, as undescores Guido Pedrocco: ‘The mysterious chiaroscuro of Rembrandt, the sign sharp and beating of Goya, the contrast of light with dramatic effects as in the engraving titled ‘L’Anacoreta’ (or Saint Gerome),1869, in which it is drawn a hermit immersed in a tormented landscape, so admired by Van Gogh (Theo letter to his brother, January 3, 1883)’. Bianchi, G. Ginex, ‘Luigi Conconi Incisore’, Arese 1994, n. 17 mm 210 x 147; misure del foglio 400 x 310 Firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra ‘L. Conconi’, ‘Milano 1884’. LUIGI CONCONI Milan 1852- 1917 31. LA SIMONA 1884 Etching, 1884 M. Bianchi, G. Ginex, ‘Luigi Conconi Incisore’, Arese 1994, n. 17 mm 210 x 147; sheet 400 x 310 A very fine impression, in black ink, richly and skillfully printed, working on the surface tone with monotypic effects, on ivory paper. Signed and dated in the plate lower left ‘L. Conconi’, ‘ Milano 1884’. With full margins, in fine condition. The subject of the prints is related to Boccaccio’s novel ‘Simona and Pasquino’, which tells about love between two young protagonists: Simona and Pasquino. The young man dies after eating a poisonous herb and the young girl is blamed for this. Simona in order to prove her innocence, eats the same poisonous herb in front of the judges and dies. The prints illustrates the final part of the novel with the death of Simona. Luigi Conconi was an architect, painter and illustrator. He studied architecture at the Accademia di Brera and at the Politecnico in Milan, and he used his architectural training occasionally throughout his career. Since his years at the Politecnico, he became acquainted with the literary and artistic circles of the Scapigliatura: Tranquillo Cremona and Daniele Ranzoni influenced his early activity. In the 1880’s Conconi moved from the realism of Scapigliatura toward Symbolism, developing an interest in visionary themes. He received international recognition by winning prizes in Paris in 1900 and in Munich in 1913. Conconi became a well-known painter but also a skillful and sensitive printmaker, who revived the art of the etching in Lombardy, being the leading exponent of the ‘acquaforte monotipata’, an etching printed with a large amount of ink left on the plate, creating evocative effects. Conconi printed personally almost all his own plates. 64 LUIGI CONCONI Milano 1852- 1917 32. 39, n. 46). The delicate passages of light are highlighted by the use of Japon paper. Very rare. The character of the building in the background on the right suggest the designs for Villa Pisani Dossi near Cernobbio. Conconi created the design and it was built by the architect Perone. JAMES MCNEIL WHISTLER Lowell 1834 - London 1903 33. THE TRAGHETTO N. 2, 1879-80 Etching, signed on the tab with the butterfly and inscribed ‘imp’ in pencil Kennedy n. 191; Lochnan n. 187; V/VI Sheet mm 234 x 301 A fine impression, in the fifth state of sixth, with evenly distributed plate tone, printed on laid paper with ‘Strasburg Lily’ watermark, signed with the butterfly and inscribed ‘imp’. Whistler printed the etchings himself, as indicate by the additional ‘imp’. Trimmed on the platemark, in very beautiful condition. From the series ‘Venice/ Whistler/ Twelve Etching’. Whistler met in 1880 Otto Bacher, a printmaker who had brought with him a portable press from Munich, where he had studied at the Academy. Whistler started to use Bacher’s press and he shared knowledge and experience with his friend and this is noted because of Bacher’s book, With Wistler in Venice (New York, 1908), his memoir of that time. It is from this book that we know that he overworked a first version of this composition, ‘The Traghetto n. 1’, which is very rare. The etching illustrate the courtyard of the Cà da Mosto, north of the Rialto Bridge. The artist transferred the earlier image and started to replicate the subject in the ‘ Traghetto n. 2’. Dissatisfied Whistler rework the subjects several time until he reached the goal of his research. From the series ‘ Venice/ Whistler/Twelve Etching’ published in 1880 by ‘The Fine Art Society’ in London. In fall 1880 the artist returned with paintings, pastels and more than forty etchings. From these prints, the ‘Society’ chose twelve etchings that were published as a set. Again according to Bacher, the earlier version was probably made immediately after Whistler’s arrival in Venice in September 1879, making it one of the first in the set. 68 GIUSEPPE DE NITTIS Barletta 1846 – Saint Gérmain - en Laye 1884 34. Bibliografia: H. First state of three, very rare: Dinoia knows only six sheets in the first state printed by the artist. The chiaroscuro contrasts between the background and the figure is replaced by a delicate shadowing obtained with vibrating strokes which became thicker only in a few contrasting areas, as in the ribbon, the fan and the lower areas on the left and on the couch. In very fine condition, with uncut margins all around. Our impression, for its refined technical characteristic, was probably made by the artist. It was exhibited in editor’s Gallery in March 1899. A very nice impression with the same subject is preserved in Fonds Jacques Doucet Collection in Paris. Bonnard devoted much time to the preparation of this Album, as proved the several preparatory studies preserved in Bibliothèque Nationale of Paris. The subjects are related to Paris in its daily life, with small and curious details like the little dog that appears in the foreground in our planche. 74 HENRI MATISSE Le Cateau 1869 – Cimiez (Nizza) 1954 37. Born in Tunisi from a British father and an Italian mother, he spent some years in an Italian school in Tunisi, but the family moved to Italy and in 1900 he attended the ‘Istituto d’Arte’ of Lucca where Lorenzo Viani was one of his classmates. Later in Florence they both frequented the ‘Accademia di Belle Arti’ and Giovanni Fattori’s drawing classes. In 1907 he exhibited in the Venice Biennal and in 1911, he held the first personal show at the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Tunisi. He was member of the Group of the Four in Tunisi in 1936, and the Group of Ten in 1947. Levy participated in all the Venice Biennals until 1938, making numerous trips to Europe. He leaved Italy because of the racial laws in 1938 and moved to Nice. At the end of the war from Tunisi he settled down in Paris and then went to Florence and in 1961 he moved to Viareggio. The subject alludes to the Myth of Androgyne, which in Jewish mysticism has its origins in the Story of Creation (Genesis 1, 27): ‘And God created man in his own image; he created male and female’. The androgynous initial condition guarantee the affinity between male and female. It is the assumption of erotic impulse and love. The androgyne is interpreted in the Mystic literature as a two-faced being, du-partzufin (literally : with two face). The separation between the two sides of Adam is not a punishment as in platonic Myth, but it is positive, and foreseen by God since the beginning. 80 MARINO MARINI Pistoia 1901 – Viareggio 1980 40. STUDIO PER CERTOSINO A MEZZO BUSTO, 1610 c. 1. STUDY FOR A CERTOSINO HALF-LENGTH Black charcoal on grey-havana paper mm 240x174 Provenance: Collection Lamponi – Leopardi (L.1760) The drawing is a preparatory study for the Saint Guglielmo da Fenoglio frescoed by Poccetti in the guest quarters of Certosa of Galluzzo. The monk, inside an oval, is framed by painted architectures. The fresco is part of a small series, frescoed over the three doors, with medallions that depict illustrious people of the Certosino order such as Saint Bruno and Saint Ugo di Lincoln1. The three figures are definitely ascribed to the hand of the Master for their plasticity and the monumentality, and that could be seen also in the beautiful drawing exhibited here. As usual Poccetti’s drawings exceed in quality, freshness and chiaroscuro effects, the frescos. Between the study and the fresco there are small differences, but the drawing is definitely referred to the fresco: the figure corresponds entirely to the monk frescoed. A perfect correspondence could be found also in the cut under the waist of the Saint. The only variation is in the right hand, which in the drawing held a crucifix or a kind of torch, while in the fresco his right hands held a donkey paw, the attribute of the Saint, detached from the animal for drive the robber away. The drawing is characterized by soft and pasty trait, and there is a great attention in the light effects. This characteristic are typical of the Poccetti’s graphic in the last years of his life, 1610 -1612, when he used frequently the grey-havana paper. A dating around 1610 of the drawing, delays also the execution of the frescoes so far collocated around 1600 (S. Vasetti, 1991). Having related the drawing with the frescoes is an important step forwards, in the knowing of the painter. MALE FIGURE SEATED Black pencil on white- ivory paper mm 265 x 177 Provenance: Collezione Lamponi – Leopardi (L.1760) The ‘Male seated figure’, has been correlated by Anna Forlani Tempesti to a painting, now lost, by Poccetti, executed for the Chapel of Tobias, in the Certosa of Galluzzo in Florence, depicted ‘Tobiolo visits his father’ and executed by the artist in 1602. For the altarpiece there is a study of the composition preserved in the Uffizi, n. 751 F, which represents the scene in its entirely. The element, however, that is most apart from the final composition is the figure of Tobias. The painter, not satisfied, studied again the figure in other two sheet at least. One is preserved in Kuperfstichkabinett of Berlin( n. 21413 Kdz), the other is presented here. These two drawings depicts Tobias in the final pose, with the bust twisting. The Berlin’s study seems to have been executed before the other because there are small differences in the clothing and the left hand. This drawing is instead very similar to the final depiction. Our drawing compared to the Berliner sheet, is much more completed in every detail. This drawing, placed in the mature phase of Poccetti’s activity, is an important example of the care with which Poccetti devoted himself to the commission for Certosino order, for which he worked throughout his career. The graphic activity of Palma is rich of similar examples as: ‘Studies of heads in left profile and hands’, 1606 December 7, Civici Musei di Venezia (Picture M. 41286, see bibliography, 1990); ‘Sheet of studies of St. Sebastian (r.- v.), Munich, Staatliche Graaphische Sammlung (D. 134, see bibliography, 1984); ‘Preparatory study for St. John The Baptist, St. Gerolamo and St. Antony’, Valdobbiene church, Florence, Uffizi, Gabinetto dei Disegni (D. 44, see the bibliography, 1984). Inscribed in brown ink in Palma’s hand on the recto ‘da fra zampiero/scudi sinque’. Numbered ‘48’. On the verso a letter by Palma to a friend in Brescia1. The drawing can be compared with the Palma’s engravings for the manual ‘De Excellentia et nobilitate delineationis, libri duo’ published in 1611, particularly with plate 2 for the studies of hands, with pl. 5 for the studies of legs, with plate 6 for the heads of old men, and with pl. 7 for the face of a woman. The letter on the verso, addressed to a friend in Brescia, has a great documentary value in that it reveals the elder master anxius to see the new works in Rome. JOHN THE EVANGELIST – 1650 Red chalk mm 171 x 133 The drawing, depicted ‘Saint John the Evangelist half-length’, is turned on his chest. He has a crosier and holds in his hands a book, perhaps the Gospel. This drawing is a typical example of the Cofortini’s graphic. His ductus is very personal and easily recognizable for the trait vigorous and fluent of the chalk, for curly hair and for the spirited faces. The painter, not mentioned by Baldinucci, is a recent conquest of criticism, in particular Christel and Gunther Thiem1 saw in him ‘ a sparkling designer and a weaker painter’ and they have published some connected drawings for the frescoes in S. Trinità in Florence, signed and dated 1631. The artist began his activity with a fresco for the Stanze of Cosimo II in the Casino Mediceo (1621-24). He concluded his artistic career with ‘The Babtism of Christ’ in S. Stefano al Ponte, 1667. Catherine Monbeig Goguel has offer an important contribution in 1997 ‘Note su Confortini’ in ‘Mitteilungen des Kunsthistorischen Institutes in Florenz, 1977, XXI, pp. 107 – 110. Drawings by Confortini are preserved in Pubblic and private collection: in Gabinetto delle Stampe di Roma, ‘Studio di due figure femminili’, (inv. F.C. 125077) and ‘Studio di una figura femminile seduta’, (inv. F.C. 125702); Uffizi’s studies included the beautiful ‘Concerto’ , executed in pen and watercolours: on the English trade was offer a drawing with the same subject executed in red chalk from the de Boer Collection. Our drawing is very similar to the study in red chalk of ‘Two young men standing’ published by Stanza del Borgo in 1998 (‘Il Bel Segno: Disegni dal XVI AL XIX Sec., n. 12). References: S. LA VISIONE DI SAN GEROLAMO (r.) STUDI DI SCHELETRO (v.) BALDASSARRE FRANCESCHINI, called IL VOLTERRANO Volterra 1611- 1689 Florence 6. THE VISION OF SAINT JEROME (r.) STUDIES OF A SKELETON (v.) Black chalk on grey paper (r.–v.) mm 389 x 244 In the life of Volterrano, Francesco Baldinucci1 wrote that ‘a painting depicted a ‘S. Gerome Vision’ was executed by the painter for a ‘Doctor from Siena’, after it was bought by Marquise Duca degli Albizzi, collector of the works of Franceschini, that brought it to Rome’. Our drawing ‘autograph by the artist’, as Riccardo Spinelli pointed out, ‘is traced with soft and virtuosity hand and it depicts an Angel that playing the trumpet in front of an old, bearded, half-dressed figure who pointing to the Empyrean, could be a preparatory study of the painting cited’3. Scholar of Matteo Rosselli, Volterrano in 1635 collaborated with Giovanni da San Giovanni in the frescoing of the Sala degli Argenti in the Palazzo Pitti where he could study the ceiling frescoed by Pietro da Cortona. After this experience he makes a trip in Northern Italy, where he was much influenced by Correggio’s works in Parma. The Granduca di Toscana commissioned numerous work to him; Don Lorenzo de Medici ordered the decoration of the Villa La Petraia and Granduchessa Vittoria della Rovere, commissioned him the decoration at Poggio Imperiale and in Palazzo Pitti. 1 in’ Notizie de’ professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua’, Firenze, 1845-1847, Ed. Ranalli, vol. V, pag. 3 To be published in the forthcoming monograph of the artist by Riccardo Spinelli. Verso 98 Recto SIMONE CANTARINI Pesaro 1612 – Verona 7. MADDALENA PENITENTE (r.) NUDO VIRILE INGINOCCHIATO E STUDI DI MANI (v.) Alcuni fogli, oggi a Brera, (inv. THE PENITENT MAGDALENE (r.) MALE NUDE KNELT AND STUDIES OF HANDS (v.) Red chalk on beige paper mm 172 x 214 The recto of our sheet, depicting ‘The Penitent Magdalene’, is a preparatory study for the painting ‘The Magdalene’, preserved in Musei Civici of Pesaro. The sheet is executed in red chalk, the technique preferred by the artist, conducted with a ductus quick and sure, which presents some variations compared with the painting: in the landscape is depicted an Angel that is not present in the painting, also the Magdalene’s face is different with a beautiful ‘pentimento’ and the sensual embrace of the skull, is drown in a different position. Some sheets, now in Brera (inv. 83, nn. 471-477), testify the creative process of the study of this subject, although they cannot be considered strictly preparatory for the pictorial composition. We know other drawings, for the figure of the Magdalene, for example the sheet of the Prado Museum (inv. F. D. 818), published by Mena Marqués (1983, n. 44, pp. 44-45) very close to our sheet. This unpublished drawing, is an important addition to the graphic corpus of Cantarini, and it has a great interest because it is a preparatory study for a painting well-known and loved by Lanzi1. 1 A. Potrebbe essere uno studio per il cupolino della sagrestia della cappella Montioni in Santa Maria in Montesanto a Roma, sempre di formato ovale, che presenta negli spicchi angioletti con simboli cristologici, anche se la soluzione finale del cupolino raffigura lo Spirito Santo e attorno i cherubini (F. Petrucci, Baciccio, Giovanni Battista Gaulli 1639-1709’, Roma, 2009, cat. B30, pp. 504-505). It could also be a study for the small cupola in the sacristy of the Montioni chapel in S. Maria in Montesanto, Rome, also oval in shape, with angels and Christological symbols in the gores although the final design for the small cupola represents the Holy Ghost surrounded by cherubs (F. Petrucci, Baciccio, Giovanni Battista Gaulli 1639-1709’, Roma, 2009, cat. B30, pp. 504505) A similar putto to that in the center of our composition can be found in Düsseldorf, Kunstmuseum (Giovan Battista Gaulli Il Baciccio 1639-1709, exhibition catalogue, Ariccia, Palazzo Chigi, Milano 1999, fig. a p. 326).
