marineria, una kermesse internazionale molto
ambiziosa sulle tradizioni, i saperi, i mestieri
antichi e moderni.
Vele d’epoca e nuove tecnologie in vetrina,
arte e scienza nel Golfo dei Poeti
From June 11th to 16th the first international Festival of
the Seafaring World will be held. This very ambitious
international fair, is about traditions, know-how,
and modern and ancient professions linked to the sea.

il primo Festival della marineria. Dal 6
all’11 giugno la città si trasformerà in
una grande vetrina sul passato con vele
d’epoca, gozzi a vela latina e grandi velieri
e offrirà al pubblico i cantieri “en plein air”
dove poter osservare maestri d’ascia, impostatori di scafi e tracciatori di lamiere
durante il loro lavoro. Sarà il più grande raduno del Mediterraneo dedicato alla marineria e ai suoi segreti che metterà insieme
tradizione e innovazione, artigiani e scienziati, musicisti e scrittori, passato e futuro.
Il sindaco della città Massimo Federici il Festival della marineria lo voleva a ogni costo. A fornirgli “l’assist” era stata la rivista
di storia e cultura navale “Yacht Digest”
che fornisce resoconti puntuali dei grandi
appuntamenti marinari europei. I richiami
più prestigiosi sono quelli di Brest e Douarnenez, due città bretoni affacciate sull’Atlantico. Brest ogni due anni e Douarnenez ogni anno danno vita a spettacoli
memorabili con regate di centinaia e centinaia di barche storiche e da lavoro, vele
d’epoca e motoryacht, ma anche con proposte incentrate sull’arte navale e le sue
manifestazioni artistiche.
“Yacht Digest” tre anni fa aveva stimolato
iniziative politiche affinché anche l’Italia
promuovesse un Festival della marineria.
Non l’ennesima festa con stand gastronomici e folclore che animano centinaia di
città italiane lungo gli 8 mila chilometri di
costa, ma una rassegna sulla cultura del
mare e le sue variegate espressioni. “Yacht
Digest” aveva individuato alcuni possibili

Spezia will hold the Festival of the
Seafaring World. From June 6 th to
th
11 the city will be transformed into a
great display of the past: vintage sailboats, fishing boats with lateen sails and
tall ships will offer the public “en plein
air” shipyards where carpenters, hull
planners and sheet iron outliners can be
seen. It will be the biggest event in the
Mediterranean devoted to the seafaring
world and its secrets. It will bring together tradition and innovation, craftsmen and scientists, musicians and writers, past and future. Besides the city
government and the Navy, the Region of
Liguria promoted the event, together
with the Province of La Spezia, the towns
of Lerici and Portovenere, the Chamber
of Commerce, the Small Towns Committee and the Port Authority.
The mayor of the city, Mr. Massimo Federici, was very keen on organizing this
Festival. The magazine of naval history
Yacht Digest assisted as it supplies accurate reports of all other great seafaring
European festivals. The most famous dates
are in Brest and Douarnenez, two Breton
cities overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Brest every other year and Douarnenez
annually give life to memorable regattas
with hundreds of historical and working
boats, vintage boats and yachts, as well as
proposals for the naval arts.
Three years ago “Yacht Digest” stimulated some political initiatives to push for
the organization in Italy of a seafaring
Festival. It is not the umpteenth gastronomic and folklore celebration like so
many that every year liven up hundreds
of Italian cities along the 8 thousand
kilometers of coastline; rather it will be
an exhibition of seafaring culture and
the great variety of its expression. “Yacht
Digest” had identified some possible
choices for this Festival, sizing up the pro
and cons, and finally chose the Gulf of
La Spezia as the ideal location. Many
were the reasons: because the two
stretches of coast are rich in coves and
natural shelters and offer a safe land-

diverse ragioni: perché vi si naviga in sicurezza in ogni periodo dell’anno tra due
tratti di costa ricchi di insenature e ripari
naturali, perché vi è una elevata concentrazione di imbarcazioni, cantieri e strutture portuali e, soprattutto, per la presenza dell’Arsenale militare con i suoi bacini di
carenaggio, le officine e i laboratori.
Il candidato sindaco Massimo Federici aveva raccolto la sfida della rivista e una volta eletto (nella primavera del 2007) aveva
messo mano al progetto affidandone la
realizzazione all’assessore Paolo Manfredini che nel frattempo è riuscito a ridare
slancio al Palio del Golfo, disfida remiera
che alla prima domenica d’agosto di ogni
anno fa riesplodere l’antica rivalità tra le
borgate marinare. Nel 2009, dunque, debutta il Festival che si ripeterà poi ogni due
anni. Quest’anno tra l’altro ricorrono i 150
anni della nascita della Marina Militare, i
140 della costruzione dell’Arsenale, voluto
da Cavour e realizzato da Domenico Chiodo e il ventennale del Raduno di vele
d’epoca organizzato con la collaborazione
della Marina Militare.
La rassegna della marineria per La Spezia è
una opportunità importante per “riconquistare” il mare. Può sembrare un paradosso,
ma la città da molto tempo gli ha voltato
le spalle: ha promosso uno sviluppo urbanistico che l’ha allontanato dalle abitudini
delle persone e ha “subìto” la crescita del
porto senza mai viverlo veramente come

When still a candidate for mayor, Massimo Federici took up the challenge of the
magazine and once elected in the spring
of 2007, started planning and put the alderman Paolo Manfredini in charge of the
project. In the meantime, Manfredini had
already succeeded in bringing back the
popular Race of the Gulf: a sailing challenge held on the first Sunday of August
every year that rekindled the ancient rivalry between the seafaring small towns.
Therefore, in 2009 the first seafaring Festival will take place, an event that will be
repeated every other year. This year will
be the 150th anniversary of the Navy, and
the 140th anniversary of the construction
of the Arsenal that Cavour wanted and
Domenico Chiodo created. It will also be
the twentieth anniversary of the first
Vintage Boats Meeting with the partnership of the Navy.
The seafaring Festival is a very important
opportunity for La Spezia to “take back”
the sea. It’s almost paradoxical, but the
city had turned its back for a long time:
promotion of urban development turned
people away from the sea, while development of the port wasn’t seen as a
window on the world or a crossroads

una finestra sul mondo e un crocevia di
culture diverse. Il golfo, anche oggi, viene
celebrato per quello che ha rappresentato
nel corso degli ultimi due secoli: dagli anni in cui Napoleone, che lo considerava “il
più bello dell’universo” alla stagione degli
artisti (fu Sem Benelli a definirlo “Golfo dei
Poeti”) che lo hanno eletto meta privilegiata di soggiorno e, in molti casi, anche di
ispirazione.
Gli amministratori, tutti, oggi avvertono
l’esigenza di proiettare sul mare il futuro
della comunità spezzina. È per questo che
da anni si lavora per il Distretto delle tecnologie marine, nato nel dicembre scorso,
che dovrà trasferire nell’industria locale i
risultati della ricerca scientifica prodotta
da un sistema di presidi altamente qualificati: dal Nurc (Nato Research Centre) all’Enea, al Cnr. La ricerca applicata interesserà filoni diversi: la cantieristica navale, la
nautica da diporto, le energie rinnovabili,
la logistica e la sicurezza, l’utilizzo delle

Today, the City feels the need to build

partnership has been signed with the Sea
Technologies District, funded last December to transfer the results of scientific research to local industry. This has
been developed by a system of highly
qualified executive committees such as:
Nurc (Nato Research Centre) and Enea,
CNR and the Hydrographic Navy Institute, the University Campus in La Spezia
is unique in Italy with two graduate degrees in marine engineering and design.

otrebbe essere la regata tra le antiche repubbliche marinare (Amalfi, Genova,
Pisa e Venezia) ad aprire il Festival della marineria. La manifestazione era
stata già fissata per il 21 giugno, ma la decisione di ridurre la durata della rassegna ha imposto una nuova data che potrebbe essere l’11 giugno.
Il programma prevede moltissime iniziative nei quattro percorsi individuati: la tradizione, le arti e i mestieri, la ricerca scientifica e la cultura.
Tante le mostre: quella delle polene tradizionali (il Museo Navale di Spezia conserva alcuni splendidi esemplari), quella del modellismo navale,
quella storica della Guardia Costiera, la mostra-mercato dell’antiquariato
navale e molte altre. Nei giorni del festival sarà possibile salire a bordo di
alcune navi militari oltre alle navi scuola Vespucci, Palinuro e Nave Italia.
Tra gli eventi in mare, oltre all’edizione straordinaria della sfida tra le
Antiche Repubbliche Marinare, sono in programma alcune prestigiose
regate tra cui il Trofeo velico Mariperman che vedrà la partecipazione di
oltre 80 imbarcazioni e la Coppa Luigi Durand De La Penne sul percorso La Spezia-Isola di Capraia promossa dall’Associazione Italiana Vele
d’Epoca. Ogni giorno sono previsti spettacoli musicali e teatrali e l’esibizione di artisti di strada. Ci sarà l’anteprima nazionale della fiction “Gente di mare” e il premio letterario “Un mare di carta” e impreziosirà il
programma culturale il gemellaggio con la Galleria Gli Uffizi di Firenze. Funzionerà una sezione eno-gastronomica con cene a tema e degustazioni, che vedrà il coinvolgimento dei pescatori e mitilicoltori locali.

he Regatta of the ancient Maritime Republics (Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and
Venice) might open the Seafaring Festival. The event was set for the 21st
of June, but the decision to cut the Seafaring Festival short may move the date
up to June 11th. The program includes many events following four different
tracks: tradition, arts and crafts, scientific research and culture. Many exhibitions are planned: the traditional figureheads (the Navy Museum in La Spezia hosts
many impressive models), Navy model making, the historical Coast Guard exhibition, the maritime antiques trade fair, and many others. During the Festival you’ll visit Navy ships such as the Vespucci, the Palinuro and the Italia, as well as training ships
and submarines. During the Festival, regattas will be organized by the Italian Vintage
Sailing Boat Association such as: Mariperman, a trophy with more than 80 boats, and the
Luigi Durand de la Penne Trophy from La Spezia to Capraia Island. In addition to this, there
will be the extraordinary Sea Challenge of the Ancient Maritime Republics. Every day theatre and
music performanceswill be held and street artists will perform outside. A preview of the “Gente di
mare” television series will be screened and there will be the Literary Prize “A Sea of Paper.” The twinning between La Spezia and the Uffizi Gallery will embellish the cultural program. A Food corner will
involve fishermen and mussels cultivators with theme dinners and food and wine tasting.

Il Festival della marineria sarà una vetrina
della tecnologia e dell’innovazione legata
al mare. E dei laboratori di ricerca avanzata, come quelli sui cambiamenti climatici.
Ci saranno studiosi e ricercatori che illustreranno i risultati del loro lavoro nel mare Artico e in Antartide e saranno allestite
mostre con percorsi interattivi. La parte divulgativa sarà affidata al documentarista
Folco Quilici.
Per la città i sei giorni dedicati al mare saranno anche una buona occasione per stimolare gli spezzini a recuperare le loro radici. Per questo tutti saranno invitati a
produrre foto, documenti e testimonianze
su vite ed episodi del mare così da allestire
un grande archivio della memoria.
Il Comune ha preso contatti con città marittime francesi e inglesi per dare alla manifestazione un respiro internazionale.
Brest e il suo Festival restano il modello cui
far riferimento. A La Spezia, però, gli amministratori preferiscono restare con i piedi ben piantati per terra e parlano di “anno zero”, consapevoli delle difficoltà e dei
limiti imposti da un budget impoverito dalla grande crisi che non risparmia nessuno,
gli enti locali, la Marina, i centri di ricerca.
Ma la crisi, ammette l’assessore Paolo Manfredini, è meglio aggredirla con iniziative
capaci di disegnare il futuro della città
piuttosto che subirla. b

shore platforms. The Seafaring Festival
will be a display of technology and innovation linked to the sea, of workshops
for advanced research and for climate
change. Scientists and researchers will
explain the results of their work in the
Arctic Ocean and in Antarctica. Exhibitions will be set up using an interactive
approach. Folco Quilici will be in charge
of the distribution of scientific documents. Those six days dedicated to the
sea will be a chance for the city to awaken citizens’ attention to regain their
roots. Therefore everybody will be invited to bring along photos, documents or
proof about lives and stories of the sea
in order to safekeep all the memories.
The City has made contact with several
seaside French and English towns to give
the Festival a wide-ranging international scope. However, they refer to the Brest
Festival as an example. In La Spezia, the
City prefers to be cautious and speak of
“year zero” as they are aware of the challenges and limits of a low budget due to
the financial crisis hitting local agencies,
the Navy and the research centers. The
alderman Manfredini admits that is better to fight the crisis with actions that
can define the town’s future rather than
stand still without responding. b

giovanile organizzato dalla Sampdoria a Genova ogni primavera.
Con una novità: in questa edizione i seimila bambini in campo
giocheranno, oltre al calcio, anche a volley, basket e rugby

organized by the Sampdoria football team in Genoa.
But there will be additions to the program: besides soccer, in this edition
6,000 children will also play volleyball, basketball and rugby

League. As a matter of fact, this event,
which over time has been copied and exported beyond regional borders, will be
expanded with volleyball, basketball and
rugby. The reason why this small revolution occurred is the celebration of the
25th anniversary sponsored by Paul Mantovani, the unforgotten President of the
Sampdoria Team during the golden years
of the soccer club.
