Reading comprehension
English Heritage is delighted to reveal the results of a year-long series of
archaeological investigations undertaken at Orford Castle in Suffolk. The mystery of the
castle defences, in particular the exact position of the now vanished curtain wall and
associated mural towers, has been resolved and a reconstruction painting unveiled.
The painting, by Frank Gardiner, shows how the castle would have looked around 1300
AD. It accurately reflects the results of the recent investigations, and also takes into
account the excellent drawings and views of the castle carried out by cartographer and
surveyor John Norden between 1600 and 1602.
John Ette, English Heritage’s East of England Historic Properties Inspector, said: "We
are delighted with the results of the investigations. The vital data has not only enabled us
to produce a new guidebook for the Castle [available shortly] but has also assisted with the
future management of the site. The painting will provide visitors with a much clearer
understanding of how this Royal castle once looked, which at the time of construction was
probably the strongest and most modern in the country"
Prototipo della prova scritta per l’anno accademico 2004-2005
The castle was built by King Henry II between 1163-75 as a statement of his power. It
was strategically placed to uphold royal authority in a region thickly planted with castles
belonging to the great magnates who held land and honours here, in particular, the Bigod
family, Earls of Norfolk. It is the earliest castle for which documentary evidence of its
construction survives, and is noteworthy for the unique design of its polygonal Keep, as
well as for being one of the earliest castles to use mural or flanking towers along the
curtain wall.
