The IACS Gioventù Proudly Present
Ridi che ti passa
The IACS Gioventù has planned a great evening of
dinner and entertainment for Friday, October 23. The
doors will open at 6:30 P.M. A family style dinner,
including beer and wine, will be served at 7:30. The
show begins at 9:00 P.M. Tickets are $55 per person
for members and $60 per person for non-members and
are available at the IACS office or from members of
the Gioventù.
The entertainment will be provided by the Italian
comedy troupe, Ridi che ti passa (“Laugh and it will
pass”), who star in a television show of the same
name. The main characters are Massimo Napoli,
Francesca Cirafisi, Luca La Barbera and Luigi Di
Mino. A production of Luca La Barbera’s Elleelle
Events, the group was formed in 2012 with the main
objective of creating harmony, joy, and cheer, and
forming a lighthearted bond with their television and
stage audiences.
They create videos out of comedy routines, and also
collaborate with companies to create entertaining
commercials to advertise in a fun and different way.
Their goal has always been to generate smiles in
trying times.
For a preview you can view their YouTube channel
“Ridi che ti passa tube”. Don’t miss this evening of
fun at the IACS.

Soprano Eva Evola & Baritone Dino Valle Concert Tour
Cinisi-Serano-Ceprano-Rome
The operatic tour started in
Cinisi, a beautiful and picturesque town, just 35 miles
from Palermo. Festa of Santa Fara, patron saint of Cinisi
is a three-day festival. The
program started Friday evening at seven o’clock, with
the Holy Mass Celebrated
by Don Vincenzo Gaglio in
the church of Santa Fara.
Baritone Dino Vale sang at
mass during Communion.
A marching band started the
Festival – the operatic concert with Eva Evola, Roy
Cardile, and Dino Valle.
The idea of having two Italian American performers,
Eva Evola and Dino Valle,
at the Festa was by Rosolino Lo Duca, President
of Bellini Opera, Michael
Chirco, Chairman of Bellini
Opera, David Evola, Board
Member – generously made
this event a reality; Don
Vincenzo Gaglio Arciprete
of Santa Fara and Vincenzo
Pizzo, Presidente del Comitato Festa. The Master of
Ceremonies, Antonio Palazzolo, introduced Eva Evola
as she entered on stage, and
she immediately takes control of the first number.
Piazza Di Cinisi, with over
two thousand Cinisari, the
mayor and other political
figures erupted in thunderous applause. Eva Evola
sings O mio Babbino Caro
from Gianni Schicchi by
Puccini, dedicated to her
father, Michael Chirco, who
could not help shedding a
joyful tear.
Saturday, July 4th, Eva reprises the concert with additional songs ciribiribin, Non
ti scordar di me, Dino Valle
encored Granada. Both Eva
and Dino received
an award: Festa
in Onore della
Patrona
Santa
Fara Cinisi 3-45-Lugio

Judges Judging Meatball Contest
Meatballs were serious business once again at the Festa
Italiana 2015. Judge Peter
Maceroni was assisted by devoted meatball-tasting Macomb County judges. The
decision on whose meatballs
were the best was based on
taste/flavor; juiciness/tenderness; overcooked/undercooked; pleasing texture;
appetizing color, is garnish
attractive; do the prepared
meatballs have eye appeal;
are meatballs original idea
or a good adaptation.
Georgina Sobieski won the
honor of the most delicious
meatballs.

Festa Della Donna Committee Hosts Fundraiser Luncheon
By Sandra Tornberg
The Festa Della Donna
Committee
hosted
a
fundraiser luncheon on June
30 in honor of their dear
friend Maria Costantini,
who was diagnosed with
ovarian cancer in 2013.
Event chairperson Martina
Finazza has known Maria
for over forty years and told
the guests that Maria has
shown tremendous courage
throughout her ordeal. The
event was organized to
demonstrate love for Maria
and encourage her to never
give up.
Martina’s
committee
consisted of Serafina Loria,
Graziella Militello, Marianna
D’Anna, Carolina Tocco,
Lia Vitale,Nancy Militello,
Rosemarie Bommarito. She
was also assisted by her
sister-in-law and brotherin-law Sarah and Tonino
Corsetti. The event was
held at the Palazzo Grande,
who Maria thanked for their
support and sponsorship. She
also expressed her gratitude
to Vince & Joe’s for their
sponsorship of the Festa
Della Donna Committee.
Guest speaker Marilyn
Brozovic of the Michigan
Ovarian Cancer Alliance
presented
important
information regarding the
disease. Ms. Brozovic is
a two-time breast cancer
survivor of twenty-seven
years and ovarian cancer
survivor for seventeen years.
The goal of the MIOCA is
to increase the number of
people who recognize the
symptoms and risk factors
relating to ovarian cancer so
that the disease is detected
earlier, and ultimately to
save women’s lives. Ovarian
cancer is the deadliest of
gynecologic cancers, with
only 15% of cases caught
early. A woman’s lifetime
risk of developing invasive

and the risk of dying from the
disease is 1 in 95. Women in
the general population are not

The audience was moved

spark his energy and passion
and that is why he will be
honored this year as the
“2015 Man of the Year” by
Lodge Figli Della Sicilia
on Saturday, September 26,
2015.
“Family first” is the number
one
guiding
principle
contributing to the success that
Vince Ciraulo has achieved
in his life and business.
Fairness and compassion
are the cornerstones of his
character.
He is most proud of his
beautiful wife of 32 years,
Sheri, and twin daughters,
Nicoletta and Alexandra;
grateful for their support
and encouragement, not to
mention the motivation that
two girls in their third year
at U of M requires.
Vince spends his workdays
very active and present as
Owner and CEO of Square
Deal
Building
Supply,
employing a staff of more
than 80 people among four
distribution centers serving
the entire state of Michigan
and surrounding Midwest
states. Employees are like
family too, and Vince holds
each to a high standard of
accountability and hard
work. Being tough minded
is balanced with fairness and
challenge to bring out the
best in his employees.
In 1967 at nine years of
age Vince immigrated from
Polizzi
Generosa,
Pro.
Palermo, Sicily with his
mother Stefina Nicoletta and
four of his siblings, joining
his father Salvatore and 2
older siblings in America.
At the age of 10 he was
working a summer job
washing and detailing cars
and at the age of 13 Vince
was employed by Las Vegas
Fruit Market, displaying
produce. At 17 he worked as
a salesman selling furniture
for
Quality
Furniture
in Detroit. Although he
proved to be a hard working
employee, Vince had always
envisioned being in business
for himself, influenced by his
father, a farmer with several
employees in Sicily.
After
graduating
from
Denby High School in 1975,
Vince was mentored by Bob
Gennette, a remodeler in
home improvement. One year
later, Vince founded
Luck Aluminum and
worked alongside Bob
in home remodeling,
installing
roofing,
siding,
windows
and doors. In 1980
Vince started Ciraulo
Brothers
Building
Co. with his older
brother
Antonio,
building
custom
homes.
Vince
co-founded
Square Deal Building
Supply in 1988 with
a partner and became
sole owner in 2005.
Today,
Square
Deal is one of the
largest independent
distributors in the
business
serving
professional
contractors, builders
and
lumberyard
dealers with specialty,
name brand products
and
remarkable
services.
In
2001,
Vince
became a citizen of
PAGE 17
the United States. While
proud of his American
citizenship, Vince has never
forgotten his Sicilian heritage
and strongly supports the
Italian community. A fair
and simple rule that Vince
lives by is “Treat people as
you want to be treated and
regardless of your success,
don’t forget your roots!”
Lodge Figli Della Sicilia
was founded in 1936 and
continues to be one of the
largest Sicilian Clubs in
Michigan with over 250
members.
This year on
Saturday, September 26,
2015 will be the 79th Annual
Banquet at Penna’s of
Sterling presenting the “2015
Man of the Year Award” to
Mr. Vincenzo Ciraulo for his
contributions and dedication
to the Italian-American
community of Metro Detroit.
Padre Giulio Schiavi and
Padre Pino Licciardi will
also be present to give the
invocation. There will be a
tremendous menu lined up
for the evening along with
the live band “One1ManOut”
from Windsor playing ItalianAmerican music to dance

AUGUST 2015
Ever wish you could learn to
speak a few more words than
“Ciao” or “Buon Appetito”
in a relaxed and friendly environment without the pressure of exams and lengthy
homework?
Italian lessons for adults
and children are now being offered by the Italian
American Cultural Society
in Clinton Township, Michigan. Courses range from
Saturday morning children’s
lessons to weeknight classes
for adults, with beginning to
advanced language skills.
The comprehensive lessons
include reading, writing, vocabulary, conversation, and
cultural introductions. They
are taught by native Italian speakers with teaching
degrees, yet have the social
feeling of meeting up with a
few friends or taking a quick
trip to Italy.
Children have workbooks
and other materials including
music at their grade levels to
help them learn the language
without the pressure of tak-
ing tests and having homework. Learning Italian and
other languages has proven
to help children understand
English grammar, too.
The focus for the adults, on
the other hand, is on developing stronger conversation
skills to help with a visit to
Italy or to keep language
skills sharp. There is a perfect course level waiting for
you.
Contact the Italian American Cultural Society today
to find the right course for
you. Adult semester classes
begin the week of Monday,
September 14, 2015, and all
classes are from 7:00 p.m. –
9:00 p.m. The Saturday children’s courses are schoolyear long. The first class is
on Saturday, September 26,
2015 until the end of April
2016.

Esplosione in fabbrica di fuoci d’artificio nel Barese: 7 morti
25 luglio 2015
Si tratta di un’azienda di
fuochi pirotecnici Bruscella,
a Modugno. Lavoravano
per le feste patronali. Ci
sono anche quattro persone
ancora ricoverate, due in
gravi condizioni
Sale a sette il bilancio dello
scoppio nell’azienda di
giochi pirici Bruscella di
Modugno (Bari): nella tarda
serata di ieri è morto, nel
reparto di rianimazione del
Policlinico di Bari, Michele
Pellicani, cugino dei titolari
della ditta. Altre quattro
persone al momento sono
ricoverate in ospedale, due
delle quali sono considerate
in gravi condizioni.
Tra i feriti c’è anche Michele
Bruscella uno dei soci
dell’azienda, ricoverato in
gravissime condizioni con
ustioni sull’85% del corpo,
nell’ospedale di Brindisi.
Dovrà in giornata essere
messa in sicurezza l’area della
fabbrica di fuochi d’artificio
Bruscella, nella campagne
tra Modugno e Bitritto, dove
ieri un’esplosione ha causato
la morte di sette persone e il
ferimento di altre quattro (due
in gravissime condizioni).
Nel sito, piantonato per
tutta la notte dai carabinieri,
ci sono tuttora fuochi
inesplosi nonostante gli
scoppi programmati fatti a
ripetizione ieri
dagli artificieri
dei vigili del
fuoco.
Dopo
la messa di
sicurezza della
fabbrica, la cui
struttura è stata
completamente
rasa al suolo,
gli investigatori
potranno tornare
all’interno
dell’area
interessata
dall’esplosione
per continuare
i rilievi utili a
ricostruire
la
dinamica.
Massimo Ranieri Porta il Suo Recital Agli
Stati Uniti
“Sogno e son desto - chi nun
tene coraggio nun se cocca
ch’ ‘e femmene belle “, è
il nuovo recital di Massimo
Ranieri.
Scritto da Gualtiero Peirce
e Massimo Ranieri. lo
spettacolo, dal titolo giocoso
e provocatorio, non sarà
dedicato ai vincitori e agli
eroi, ma agli ultimi e ai
sognatori: gli uomini e le
donne cantati dalla musica
di Raffaele Viviani e di
Pino Daniele; o dal teatro di
Eduardo De Filippo e Nino
Taranto.
Tra canzoni e monologhi
non mancheranno i colpi di
teatro: nel recital Ranieri
andrà oltre il repertorio
della canzone napoletana,
interpretando brani dei più
celebri cantautori italiani e
internazionali: da Fabrizio De
Andrè a Francesco Guccini,
da Charles Aznavour a
Violeta Parra.

La
fabbrica
Bruscella
stava lavorando a pieno
regime per la preparazione
delle feste patronali che si
susseguono nei vari paesi
in questo periodo. Sembra
che nell’edificio vi fossero,
al momento dell’esplosione,
almeno 14 persone. La
zona è stata completamente
isolata e interdetta e gli
artificieri stanno procedendo
ad esplosioni controllate per
disinnescare tutto il potenziale
esplosivo contenuto nella
struttura. Dall’alto due aerei
fireboss stanno tentando di
spegnere le fiamme che si
sono propagate al boschetto
vicino. “Ci vorranno almeno
24 ore affinché i vigili del
fuoco possano accedere in
sicurezza nella struttura,
che è crollata”.
Lo ha detto il
procuratore di
Bari, Giuseppe
Volpe, che sta
facendo
un
sopralluogo
a
Modugno
dove è esplosa
una
fabbrica
di fuochi di
artificio. “Solo
allora - aggiunto
- si potrà fare un
bilancio delle
vittime
che
ad ora appare
tragicamente
alto”.
EVACUATO
CAMPO
e i 13 anni impegnati nelle
attività dei campi estivi.
I piccoli hanno avvertito
chiaramente
l’esplosione
che ha fatto tremare le pareti
della struttura e fatto cadere
alcuni quadri appesi alle
pareti, e qualcuno di loro
si è sbucciato un ginocchio
cadendo per lo spavento
e nella fuga. Nessuno ha
riportato però conseguenze
gravi.

Renzi: “La chiusura di Pompei è uno scandalo, serve responsabilità”
25 luglio 2015
Il premier: “Fa male come
lo sciopero di Alitalia”.
Poi, sulla crisi, aggiunge:
“In tanti scommettono sul
nostro fallimento, noi no”.
Cisl: “Renzi non sollevi
polveroni”. Uil: “Si scusino
anche dirigenti e politici”
20:28 - Quanto è accaduto
a Pompei, con l’assemblea
sindacale che ha provocato
la chiusura degli scavi
mentre migliaia di turisti
attendevano in coda sotto il
sole, è scandaloso. Lo scrive
il premier Matteo Renzi
nella sua enews. “Fa male
come lo sciopero di Alitalia”,
aggiunge
il
premier,
precisando che “nessuno
mette in discussione il diritto
all’assemblea sindacale o
allo sciopero. Ma c’è anche
bisogno di buon senso e di
responsabilità”.
“In un momento come
questo - scrive Renzi - tenere
migliaia di turisti venuti da
tutto il mondo, sotto il sole
per un’assemblea sindacale
a sorpresa significa volere
il male di Pompei. Significa
fare il male di Pompei. Io
non ce l’ho con i sindacati.
Ma se continua così dovremo
difendere i sindacati da
se stessi. L’assemblea di
venerdì a Pompei, in quelle
modalità, in quelle forme, è
semplicemente scandalosa.
Continueremo a lavorare per
Pompei, nonostante loro”.
crisi. Vogliamo riportarla al
posto che merita: alla guida
dell’Europa”. Le due parole
d’ordine, sottolinea, sono
“riforme e crescita”. “Se le
riforme andranno avanti - e
io ci credo - riusciremo a
abbassare il debito, sbloccare
i cantieri, abbassare le tasse.
Il disegno è chiaro, non resta
che realizzarlo! E il Pd non
sarà mai più il partito delle
tasse”.
“Paghiamo troppe tasse,
folle continuare così” - “In
Italia paghiamo troppe
tasse - afferma Renzi -. E’
folle continuare così. La
strategia è chiara: intanto
combattiamo l’evasione. Se
paghiamo tutti, paghiamo
meno”. Il premier quindi ha
ribadito che “nel terzo anno”
di governo “elimineremo
tutte le tasse sulla prima
casa (Tasi e Imu). Nel 2017,
quarto anno, incideremo
sull’Ires per abbassare le
tasse alle imprese. Nel 2018
toccheremo scaglioni Irpef e
pensioni minime”.
La reazione dei sindacati “Non serve al nostro Paese
fare demagogia o sollevare
polveroni” e “il sindacato
confederale e in particolare
la Cisl ha sempre avuto un
ruolo responsabile”. Lo ha
detto il segretario
generale
della
Cisl, Annamaria
Furlan, dopo le
parole di Renzi.
“E’ una delle
poche volte in cui
sono
d’accordo
con Renzi”, ha
commentato
il
leader Uil Carmelo
Barbagallo, ma “le
scuse dovrebbero
arrivare
anche
da dirigenti e
politici”.
Uil:
d’accordo
con Renzi, ma colpe anche
dirigenti - “E’una delle poche
volte in cui sono d’accordo
con Renzi”. Così il leader
Uil Carmelo Barbagallo,
sottolineando di essersi gia’
scusato, in passato, con
turisti e cittadini per i disagi
creati da manifestazioni
sindacali ma anche che “in
molte situazioni le scuse
dovrebbero arrivare anche da
dirigenti e politici” che non
sanno risolvere i problemi
dei lavoratori.

“Tanti scommettono sul
nostro fallimento” - Il premier
torna a parlare anche della
crisi economica. “In tanti

Roma, lo sciopero bianco dei macchinisti della
metro sta mettendo in ginocchio la città
24 luglio 2015
Lo
sciopero
bianco
dei
macchinisti
della
metropolitana di Roma sta
mettendo in ginocchio la
città. Ormai da 23 giorni
hanno rallentato le corse per
protestare contro la decisione
dell’azienda di obbligarli
a timbrare il cartellino
all’inizio e al termine del
servizio. Protestano anche
contro la riforma del contratto
che gli imporrà di guidare
di più. Eppure conducono
i convogli molto meno dei
colleghi di altre grandi città:
736 ore l’anno contro le 850
ore di Napoli e le oltre 1.200
di Milano.
Nonostante
l’ultima
precettazione del prefetto
Gabrielli per impedire lo
sciopero di lunedì proseguono
le lunghe attese sui binari. I
treni, quando arrivano, sono
stracolmi, il più delle volte
senza aria condizionata, e
spesso bisogna attendere
nelle stazioni sovraffollate
il successivo per riuscire a
salire. Poi sui vagoni si sta
stretti come in una scatola di
sardine.
Il ministero dei Trasporti
vuole fare luce sul treno
che ha viaggiato a porte
aperte
Intanto
il
ministero
dei
Trasporti
farà
approfondimenti
sul
sistema di gestione della
sicurezza da parte di Atac
nell’espletamento
dei
servizi di trasporto, ha reso
noto il vice ministro dei
Trasporti, Riccardo Nencini,
in relazione al convoglio
della Metro linea B che
ieri ha viaggiato con le
porte aperte dalla Stazione
Termini alla fermata Castro
Pretorio,
terrorizzando
i passeggeri. Le porte si
sono spalancate in galleria
e il treno ha proseguito la
corsa in velocità, senza che
i passeggeri riuscissero a
far funzionare il freno nel
vagone.
I troppi disagi ieri
raccontati anche dal New
York Times
E se ieri il degrado di Roma
è approdato, corredato
da una grande foto, sulla
prima pagina dell’edizione
internazionale del New
York Times - che ha
scritto: «La metro scorre
a passo di lumaca perché i
lavoratori sono in sciopero»
- proseguono i disagi sulla
linea metropolitana di Roma.
«Il servizio sulla metro B - fa
sapere l’Atac in una nota - è
al momento limitato al tratto
Castro Pretorio-Laurentina
a causa di un guasto a un
treno, che non è possibile
rimuovere finchè i passeggeri
rimangono a bordo». Uno
stop che ha causato alla
stazione
Tiburtina
una
ressa tra i passeggeri che
hanno insultato e tentato di
aggredire il macchinista che
si è rifugiato nella cabina. Un
altro treno è rimasto fermo
a San Paolo a causa del
malore di un macchinista,

provocando un’interruzione
del servizio tra San Paolo
e Rebibbia/Ionio e forti
ritardi sul resto della linea.
I passeggeri riferiscono che
il macchinista non sia partito
dopo un alterco con un
passeggero che protestava
per il ritardo. Poi è arrivata
la polizia. «Si viaggia come
in un carro bestiame - dice
Adriana dopo aver atteso
per 35 minuti la metro alla
stazione San Paolo - e ormai
siamo
all’esasperazione.
Ogni giorno sai quando esci
di casa, ma non sai quando
arrivi e per un percorso
medio di 15 minuti si
impiega anche un’ora. Una
situazione impossibile per
chi deve andare a lavorare,
ma anche per i turisti che
assistono esterefatti alle
scene di quotidiana follia dei
trasporti pubblici romani».
Venerdì scorso i passeggeri
esasperati dai continui guasti
e dai lunghi tempi di attesa
della Roma-Ostia hanno
scagliato pietre contro la
cabina di guida di un treno
che viaggiava senza aria
condizionata.

Il New York Times denuncia il
degrado di Roma
23 luglio 2015
Il New York Times si
occupa del degrado di Roma
con una corrispondenza
pubblicata
sull’edizione
cartacea del quotidiano Usa,
richiamata in prima pagina
da una eloquente foto di
immondizie abbandonate
nel centro della Capitale.
Un sindaco onesto contro
i vizi di Roma, è il titolo
dell’articolo. Il punto di
partenza è il “degrado” il termine è volutamente
lasciato in italiano nel testo
- che caratterizza Roma.
Metropolitana
ostaggio
delle
proteste
dei
lavoratori
Una situazione difficile
che, sottolinea il quotidiano
americano, si manifesta nella
vita di ogni giorno: l’erba
lunga nei parchi pubblici e
sulle sponde del Tevere, il
servizio della metropolitana
ostaggio delle proteste dei
dipendenti. L’aeroporto di
Fiumicino che a seguito
di un incendio ha dovuto
chiudere il suo terminal
internazionale.
Criminalità
ha
fatto
breccia nel sistema di
gestione della Capitale
Senza
dimenticare
la
criminalità organizzata e la
corruzione che - come ha
fatto emergere l’inchiesta
Mafia Capitale - hanno
fatto breccia nel sistema
di gestione della capitale.
Se questo è il contesto, il
sindaco Ignazio Marino,
destinatario di attacchi
politici e delle critiche
dei cittadini, non arretra.
«Sono stato aggressivo fin
dall’inizio, in modo clinico»,
confida in un’intervista
al giornale statunitense.
«Abbiamo portato le regole:
la cosa più importante per
me a amministrare la città in
modo trasparente e onesto continua - e non mi importa
nulla di quali fossero gli
accordi politici in vigore
prima del mio arrivo».
L’intenzione del sindaco di
riportare l’ordine all’interno
del sistema, sottolinea però
il New York Times, sembra
che abbia determinato
l’effetto opposto, ovvero
più disordine. È il caso,
ad esempio, della delibera
contro i venditori ambulanti,
sempre
più
numerosi
all’ingresso dei musei o dei
principali monumenti della
città. Una decisione, ricorda
il New York Times, che
ha scatenato le proteste di
questa categoria.
Considerato un sindaco
debole
«Molti cittadini - scrive il
quoridiano - danno credito
all’onestà di Marino, ma
sono arrabbiati perché non
sta lavorando abbastanza
per la città». Lo considerano
un sindaco debole. «Non
tutti i problemi di Roma
sono
necessariamente
colpa del sindaco, un ex
chirurgo la cui integrità
rimane irreprensibile - è
la conclusione del New
York Times -. Ma, cosa
abbastanza strana, questa
sua integrità a Roma non è
necessariamente vista come
parte della soluzione».
