KAMEL TALES A. A. O. N. M. S. Emirat Shriners Heidelberg - Germany Special Issue 2010 Honoring the Past - Supporting the Future of the Shrine in Europe The Shrine is nothing new and has a long and proud tradition over half of a century here in Germany and Europe. In 1958 the first Shrine Club emerged in Wiesbaden, Germany under the auspices of Aahmes Shriners out of Oakland,, California. In 1963 the Club became affectionately known as the European Shrine Club (ESC) and gained tremendous support and recognition throughout the United States, Canada and the Imperial Shrine. Several Imperial Potentates and Officers became regular visitors to the ESC. During this time the Club created over 7,000 Nobles for Moslah Temple out of Fort Worth, Texas and Aahmes Temple which had moved to Livermore, CA. Since 2002 the ESC was under the singular sponsorship of Aahmes. On 30 July 2008 in Frankfurt, Germany the ESC leadership was informed by Aahmes Chief Rabban Terry Moody in the presence of two Imperial Officers that Potentate Dan Garrett and his Divan members will close the Club effective the next day and wanting the thirteen Oases of the ESC to become Clubs under Aahmes. Grand Master and Noble Grady Adams intervened by writing a letter to Potentate Garrett with no avail requesting to reverse the closure decision and keep the ESC since the Club was part of the Masonic family here in Germany and Europe. The ESC leadership under Paul M. Curran ESC President and the thirteen Oases refused to become Clubs with the exception of the Düsseldorf Oasis which later joined with Aahmes Bavaria Shrine Club. On 15 September 2008 Noble Paul M. Curran as the Chairman of a newly formed Emirat Shrine Temple Steering Committee contacted the Imperial requesting a Shrine Temple in Germany and for all of Europe. The required documentations for a Dispensation for Charter was prepared and on behalf of 333 Nobles and Candidates Nobles Paul M.Curran, Charsten Wienbreyer and Gerhard W. Severin traveled on 4 July 2009 to the Imperial Session in San Antonio, Texas. The request for Dispensation was turned down by the voting delegates even though the two Imperial Committees on Charter and Dispensation and Jurisdictional Lines recommended approval. The key issue for the non-adoption of the motion and the non issue of the Dispensation was the former Hospital and Transportation fund of the ESC which was being held in escrow for the new Temple. The $82,000 SHC funds were later released to the Shriners Hospitals for Children to remove any further objections. Disappointed but not beaten it was decided by the European Nobility to try it again the following year.On 30 March 2010 a new packet was submitted with 448 names of Nobles and Candidates and again on 4 July Nobles Paul M. Curran, Charsten Wienbreyer and Gerhard W. Severin traveled to the 136th Imperial Session in Toronto, Canada. This time we would succeed! With a favorable report from both Committees and a unanimous vote from the 680 delegates Nobles Curran, Wienbreyer and Severin departed Toronta with the Dispensation in their pockets. The plans to obtain the permanent charter to become the 194th Shrine Temple in Shriners International are well on the way. First priority is to initiate our candidates who have been patiently waiting for the last two years. Some have already departed Germany to Afghanistan and Iraq or even returned to CONUS. Most important to get our Shrine Clubs established in Italy, Romania, Croatia, Monte Carlo and Germany. The former European Shrine Club will be reopened under Emirat Shriners in Heidelberg. The application to charter our former ESC Legion of Honor under Emirat is also on the way and pending approval for this outstanding marching and ceremonial Unit. New members need to be recruited for the Wrecking Crew and the Clowns. To obtain legal status in Germany Emirat needs to form an Association (Verein e.V. ) which is being worked on. We need to look into the possibility of obtaining a tax exempt status from the Finance authorities here in Heidelberg. All clubs located in Germany will come under the umbrella of the Verein. The Temple Bylaws are being drafted and will be ready for final approval by our Nobility at January’s Annual Meeting in L9,9 Mannheim. To all Emirat Nobles the challenge is out. Get your Jimmy today for the next Ceremonial. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated to make Emirat Shriners a beacon of light for Shrinedom here on the European continent. This article is also a tribute and acknowledgement to Noble Elmer C. George a good friend and brother who had served as the President and Recorder of the ESC for over 30 years. Without his dedication and hard work there would be no Shrine in Germany or Europe. Thanks - Noble Elmer rest in peace. (G.W.S. 1 August 2010) Kamel Tales Emirat Shriners, A.A.O.N.O.M.S. Emirat Shriners has become a reality! I would like to thank Grand Master Noble Paul M. Curran and Noble Gerhard W. Severin for their untiring efforts over the last two years to get the Dispensation. Without their help we would not have made it. Thank you. With great pride I am entering my term as your Potentate (Provisional). You have a dynamic team of officers and dedicated Nobles. I earnestly enlist your support and cooperation for a successful year in the sunshine of the Shrine. One of the many purposes of our existence is to help children by providing funds primarily to the Shriners Hospital for Children and secondly to our Emirat Transportation Fund. While doing so we should have fun and pleasure knowing that we are helping some unfortunate child to become a productive person in our society. Pride in Emirat is very important to me. Therefore, my motto for 2010: “Proud to be a Shriner!” We will do again a Warm Sands on 21 August in Ludwigshafen. Get your Jimmy ready. Dear Nobles, It’s FEZTASTIC to be elected as your 122nd Imperial Potentate at our 136th Imperial Council Session in Toronto! We had an outstanding time and made a lot of memories during this fun-filled week. It is such an exciting time in the history of our fraternity and I am privileged to serve as your leader. The new Imperial Year was kicked off with a lot of energy and excitement thanks to Illustrious Sir Barry McQuillan, the Director General of the Session, and his committee members. These gentlemen really know how to WOW the crowd! I would also like to express my appreciation to the staff at Shriners International Headquarters and the Oshawa Shrine Club, as well as the rest of the nobles and ladies of Rameses Shriners, for all of their dedication and support. These people put a lot of time and effort into making the Imperial Council Session a great success and I could not be more thrilled with the result. Through the years, many of you have witnessed my enthusiasm for increasing membership in Shriners International. I am overjoyed to be taking on this role at a time when we are accepting two new temples into our organization, growing from 191 temples to 193. I truly believe that we can solve our membership dilemma, and feel that global growth will play a big role in turning things around. I am very excited about the prospect of adding a 194th temple, Emirat Shriners of Heidelberg, Germany, next year. I am also ECSTATIC about the launch of modern new tools designed to make membership in Shriners International more enriching, such as Shriners Village, and more enticing, such as beashrinernow.com. With all of these wonderful new developments, I thought my long-time slogan, “Isn’t it great to be a Shriner? It’s Feztastic!” would carry over and be a great theme for my Imperial year. I plan to share this theme with the world every chance I get, in hopes I can motivate others to become more involved. With enthusiasm and hard work, we can expand our fraternity and continue our good deeds for many years to come. As we move forward, I encourage you to continue doing everything you can to help the patients and families of Shriners Hospitals for Children’, and to keep having fun and enjoying the brotherhood you joined. As Imperial Sir Jack Jones would say, “UNITY WINS, and together we can achieve our goals.” I also ask you to carry my theme with you everywhere you go, and help me get everyone on their feet and excited about who we are and what makes membership in this organization so FEZTASTIC!! And it is a GREAT DAY TO BE A SHRINER. Sincerely, George A. Page 5 Emirat Recorder “ ES SELAMU ALAEIKUM “ Dear Nobles: What a great successful trip to Toronto, Canada in obtaining our long awaited dispensation for Emirat Shriners. It surely helped to have Grand Master Paul with us since he could move around with the special GMpass and do some lobbying for our cause in the restricted areas reserved for the voting delegates. This was an almost 24/7 undertaking for him and continued at the Hotel at night and some banquets and meetings. Thanks Noble Paul - great job we are all indebted to you for this total success. Call # 17 on the Imperial Agenda requesting the dispensation for Emirat was presented on Monday without any great debate and quickly approved. Article 101, Sec.4101.1 Emirat Shriners, U.D. of the Articles of Incorporation of the Iowa Corporation now reads: “Exclusive jurisdiction in the countries of the European Union. as it is constituted on 5 July, 2010, with specific exception of Great Britain, Norway and Austria”, Emirat did not apply for jurisdiction in the three excluded countries. Also approved was the following: any and all assets and liabilities of any affected clubs and appendant and affiliated entities within the foregoing jurisdiction including, but not limited to, any and all clubs in the country of Romania, shall be the property of Emirat Shriners,U.D, upon granting this dispensation. Also I would like to thank our Potentate Charsten Wienbreyer for his engagement in Toronto and the last two years. Yours in the Faith - Noble Gerhard W. Believe it or not, the camel was once the most magnificent of all the animals! It’s true! He had beautiful big horns with golden tips, and a long, thick, bushy tail. Day after day the camel used to stand beside the river, admiring his reflection in the water. One day while he was standing there, down from the hills came the Siberian stag. Ekii, Teve!” said the stag. This is the way to say, “Hi, camel!” in Tuvan. “My brother,” he went on, “you have the most magnificent horns I have ever seen. Won’t you loan them to me? I’m going to a party and I’d like to get dressed up.” “My horns?” said the camel. “I’d hate to give away my horns.” “Don’t worry,” said the stag, “I’ll bring them right back tomorrow.” “Tomorrow? All right,” said the camel, “But make sure that you do.” And so Teve the camel took off his magnificent horns and loaned them to the stag. The stag ran off into the mountains. Teve stood beside the river, admiring what was left of his reflection. Pretty soon along came the horse. “Ekii, Teve!” said the horse. “My brother, you have the most beautiful tail I have ever seen. Won’t you loan it to me? I’m on my way to a horse-race, and I’m sure I’d win if I had your tail.” “Chok!” said the camel. That is the Tuvan way to say, “No!” “I already loaned out my horns and I just can’t loan my tail too.” “Don’t worry, brother. I will bring it right back after the race is over.” “You’re sure?” said Teve. “All right, but make sure you bring it right back.” He took off his long, thick, bushy tail and gave it to the horse. The horse galloped away across the steppe. The camel stood there beside the river, peering off into the distance, looking for his friends. He waited all day. He waited the next day, and the day after that. Neither the stag nor the horse ever came back. The stag stayed far away in the mountains and forests. As for the horse, whenever he meets a camel, he shies away. And from that day to this, the camel has remained the angriest of all the animals! EUROPEAN SHRINERS DONATE $82,000 MW Paul M.
