Corin Sworn was the winner of the fifth edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for
Women. The prize, which takes place every two years in collaboration with the
Whitechapel Gallery in London, aims to promote and support young female
artists who are residents in the United Kingdom, offering them the possibility
to develop their creative potential through the creation of a new body of work
during a residency period in Italy offered by the Max Mara Art Prize. The work is
exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery, and in a second period, at the Collezione
Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, which acquires the piece.
The proposal with which Corin Sworn won the prize focused on the exploration
of the Commedia dell’Arte, a theatrical form based on improvisation, developed
in Italy in the 16th Century and spread throughout Europe, influencing many
creative languages from the past and current times.
Thanks to this project, the artist had the opportunity to spend a period of six
months between Rome, Naples, and Venice. Sworn explored in great depth the
culture of each city, studied traditional theatrical productions, and met many
actors and experts of the Commedia dell’Arte, while visiting many important
architectural sites and monuments.

The work produced for this occasion - Silent Sticks - is an installation composed of
theatrical props, costumes made in collaboration with Max Mara, sound elements
and video works that communicate with each other, simulating a theatrical scene.
Corin Sworn will take part in a public event at the British School at Rome,
which will include a conversation between the artist and Pier Paolo Pancotto,
and the screening of a documentary produced in collaboration with Sky Arte
between 2014 and 2015, which focuses on the experience of the artist during
her residency in Italy, shedding light on the concept of her work, the reasons that
made her choose the three Italian cities, and the evolution of her project.
Corin Sworn was born in 1976 in Glasgow, where she lives and works. She has a
BA in Psychology from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver; a BFA from
the Institute of Art & Design, Vancouver; an MFA from the Glasgow School of
Art, Glasgow. The artist creates films and installations informed by her in-depth
research that combines history with memories and fragments of stories, both true
and fictitious.
Pier Paolo Pancotto is an independent curator and art historian. He was Corin
Sworn’s tutor during her stay in Rome.
Corin Sworn’s installation is on display at the Collezione Maramotti from 4
October 2015 to 28 February 2016.

Corin Sworn ha vinto la quinta edizione del Max Mara Art Prize for Women. Il
premio, biennale, in collaborazione con la Whitechapel Gallery di Londra, ha lo
scopo di promuovere e sostenere giovani artiste donne residenti nel Regno Unito,
offrendo loro la possibilità di sviluppare il proprio potenziale creativo attraverso
la produzione di una nuova opera d’arte, durante un periodo di residenza in Italia
previsto dal Premio. L’opera è esposta alla Whitechapel Gallery e, in un secondo
momento, alla Collezione Maramotti di Reggio Emilia, che la acquisisce.
La proposta con cui Corin Sworn ha vinto il Premio è l’esplorazione della
Commedia dell’Arte, forma teatrale basata sull’ improvvisazione, sviluppatasi in
Italia nel 1500 e diffusasi in tutta Europa con un’ influenza su molti linguaggi
creativi, e la sua capacità di mantenersi attuale ancor oggi.
Grazie a questo progetto, l’artista ha avuto l’opportunità di trascorrere un periodo
di residenza di sei mesi tra Roma, Napoli e Venezia. Sworn ha esplorato in
profondità la cultura di ciascuna città, ha studiato le opere teatrali tradizionali,
incontrato attori ed esperti della Commedia dell’Arte, visitando inoltre importanti
luoghi e monumenti architettonici.

L’opera che ne e’ scaturita - Silent Sticks - è una installazione composta da
oggetti scenici, costumi realizzati in collaborazione con Max Mara, elementi
sonori e video che dialogano tra loro simulando una scena teatrale.
Corin Sworn sarà protagonista di un incontro pubblico organizzato presso la
British School of Rome. L’appuntamento, prevede un intervento di Pier Paolo
Pancotto in dialogo con l’artista e sarà incentrato sulla proiezione di un film
documentario realizzato in collaborazione con Sky Arte tra il 2014 e il 2015,
che restituisce l’esperienza vissuta dall’artista, facendo luce sul concept del
suo lavoro, sui motivi che l’hanno portata a scegliere le tre citta’ italiane e
sull’evoluzione del suo progetto.
Corin Sworn nasce nel 1976 a Glasgow, dove vive e lavora. Ha ottenuto un BA
in Psicologia presso l’Università di British Columbia, a Vancouver; un BFA presso
l’Institute of Art & Design di Vancouver e un MFA alla The Glasgow School of
Art. L’artista crea film e installazioni che nascono da ricerche approfondite e
intrecciano la Storia con le memorie e i frammenti di racconti veri o immaginati.
Pier Paolo Pancotto è un curatore e storico dell’arte indipendente. È stato il tutor
di Corin Sworn durante la sua permanenza a Roma.
L’installazione di Corin Sworn è visitabile alla Collezione Maramotti dal 4 ottobre
2015 al 28 Febbraio 2016.
