This year Back to the Future includes works by 19 artists, represented by just as many galleries (3 Italian, 16 from abroad) that were selected by a curatorial committee composed of section coordinator Eva Fabbris (independent curator), Gary Carrion-Murayari (curator, Kraus Family, New Museum, New York |New Museum Triennial 2018), Krist Gruijthuijsen (director, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin) and Cristiano Raimondi (head of development and international projects, Nouveau Musée National de Monaco). The prize jury, composed by Daniel Baumann (director, Kunsthalle Zurich), Christine Macel (curator, Capo, Musée National d'Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou, Paris | Director, Venice Biennale 2017) and Joanna Mytkowska (director, Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw), has explained their choice of winner as follows: “The Sardi Prize goes to Galerie in situ – Fabienne Leclerc, Paris for the work of Lars Fredrikson. The committee evaluated his artistic practice as particularly important from a historical perspective, and vis-à-vis contemporary artistic production, for the unprecedented bond that it createsd between the sonic and the visual dimensions. Fredrikson’s works, although very physical and based on concrete matter, embody a mystical dimension. His works pieces appear disinterested and autonomous in comparison to the classical distinctions among between traditional media, and in comparison to those that take place in a completely different realm. The committee also makes special mention to of the work of Klaus Lutz, presented by the Rotwand Gallery, in Zurich, for the value and rigour of the exhibition’s preparation, which highlight the originality of the artist's practice, using a personal visual language. Special mention also goes to Pat O’Neill, presented by Monitor Gallery, in Roma; a pioneer of experimental filmmaking in the Seventies1970s, who is able to transfer his approach to research also and to the medium of collage.” Klaus Lutz, gallery Rotwand, Zurich.
