Kahlil Gibran "Beauty is not a need but an ecstasy" Kahlil Gibran “Beauty generates a sense of benevolent reflection on the meaning of one's own existence in the natural world”. I have always loved the beautiful. As an adolescent I chose beautiful gardens, museums or harmonious places for studying, I collected books about art, fashion, photography and architecture. I found peace and serenity, stillness and wellbeing in beauty: strangely, all opposite to the tormented feelings that had animated the hands of the artists that I adored. The great painters were not tranquil beings, but volcanoes of sentiments and genius. Editorial In this difficult moment that Italy is going through, it's important to be able to protect these generators of beauty which our artisans are, our small companies, the realities which is a part of the excellence that we like so much to talk about. It's beautiful to read that three Italians out of four has decided to buy products that are rigorously Made in Italy as Christmas gifts, it's beautiful to know that many are ready to roll up their sleeves because we are the only solution to our problems. Patrizia Skaf "It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth, But rather a heart inflamed and a soul enchanted." Kahlil Gibran When I was seven years old I visited the Louvre with my father, in front of the Mona Lisa, so beautiful and surrounded by all those people that photographed her. Her eyes followed me everywhere in that room and still today I see the only platonic love in my life in those eyes. I remember that I shouted to my father: "Can you buy it for me?” Beauty is something that remains imprinted forever. And then fashion, Works of art to wear, to feel on your skin, on your feet. Small, great creations by artists like Valentino, Prada, Bulgari, that have made fashion history. Recently I visited the Ferragamo Museum in Florence, an almost mystical place, where you could sense the spirit of Salvatore Ferragamo. Spirit is a word that derives from the latin spiritus, which literally mean "blow, breathing, breath", which in turn comes from the latin word spirare, that means exactly "to blow". That's what fashion is: a blow, the breathing of artists, stylists and artisans, embroiderers that create something beautiful. And the beautiful makes us dream. Da sinistra: Simone Capra, Francesco Colangeli e Claudio Castaldo a lavoro Whatami, Maxxi 11 YOUNG ARCHITECTS BRING GREEN ENERGY TO MAXXI. Architecture is a part of the human experience and something that surrounds us all, no matter if we live in a skyscraper on Manhattan or in a gher in Mongolia. It has a great but often unmentioned impact on the quality of our lives, it's where we work, play and create. It's a mirror of our ideals, our concern for others and the environment. There is a rule of thumb for Shaker creations that says "if something is both necessary and useful, don't hesitate to make it beautiful" and that is exactly what the architects from stARTT do with extraordinary talent. maps of Alighiero Boetti, which the square of the MAXXI is dedicated to. The empty flat concrete space was transformed into a mobile garden where people got a space that they were allowed to use freely, a lawn where you could lay down without getting dirty. As a sure signs of the successful project was seeing euphoric children playing, splashing around in the water and sliding down the grass. They were waiting in the morning for the museum to open, bringing their mothers and lunch boxes along. A cultural project often run a risk to be for the selected few but this truly won the appreciation of a large audience. It was used as a stage for the This year marks the d e b u t o f t h e YA P MAXXI Young Architects Program, a partnership between MoMA PS1 in New York and the National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome. When I asked them about what it's like to work as an architect in a such a historically rich country as Italy they say that it's not very easy since young architects are not considered able to pull off a public projects. With Whatami they have again demonstrated the opposite, representing not only themselves but a generation of young architects. To work in a city like Rome creates a special kind of challenge; every layer and building has its meaning and the space is limited. Beauty today is not to reproduce the antique but to continue ahead and to create something meaningful within today's society. Younger countries in economical growth have other possibilities and an optimism, in a way it's easier. Asking if they have ever been in a building so interesting that they didn't want to leave they answer the Casteldelmonte castle in Apulia, the kasbah of Tozeur in Tunesia and Mount Nemrut in Eastern Turkey, they do for sure draw inspiration from very different kind of places. For them it's fundamental for every project to start with research and reflection on the physical space, to understand it and its relation to the rest of the city or landscape, to find a correct way to interpret it. On the question what part they enjoyed most with the Whatami project they also complete each other well: Castaldo really likes to interact with the construction workers onsite, Colangeli likes the initial phases like drawing, Capra is the one managing the social part. The Whatami design elements will be re- cycled and used to rehabilitate other areas in the city and we come to talk about sustainability. Capra cites the philosopher and André Gorz, founder of political ecology where you study the relationships between political, economic and social factors with environmental issues and changes. He says that also the change to sustainability comes with a prize to pay. Instead of sustainability he prefers to conflictual relation to his profession, if he's create a house he says maybe it would be a hut under a tree by a river. An architect without a house is for sure an amusing idea. Then he adds that it's not true because he likes being with people too much. Colangeli would create a space that is kitchen, living room and then terrace - he likes the "breakfast promenade". stARTT has a vision, they would like to work more with hay bales, piazza Flaminio in the centre of Rome was full with 70 hay bales, there were mothers explaining to their children that it is what animals eat, elders asked when the cows were coming. Architecture can reveal the hidden value of a place, to underline it's qualities. A tree house makes you feel different than a cathedral, you can feel free as on the roof of Oslo's opera house or tiny when walking on Karl Marx allee in the public side of the city, with schools, museums, public buildings and council houses. That would be the most beautiful thing for us, says Capra. Berlin. It sure has a stronger impact on our lives than we can think. A part of this lays in the hands of the architects. For that reason I hope to see more of stARTT projects in the future. I don't mind if barefoot. Lo studio di stARTT talk about using resources in a correct way, independently of what kind of materials you use, things can be biodegradable but never really sustainable. That word has become something that is used for marketing. stARTT prefer to use talk in terms of recycling. What about their dream house, what would it look like, where would it be? Castaldo says he has always had a kind of Man is very adaptable and get used to most things, for instance getting stuck in traffic jam for two hours every day. HELENA MONTANARINI. THE INTUITIVE STYLE. Her intuitive style has consecrated her in the heights of the fashion world, Helena Montarini is one of the most respected names of fashion consultants and buyers specialized in luxury brands in Latin America. She says that her business card is her hair, rebellious curls that frame a face that always smiles; in reality it's her nose for trends that understood how to transform a ordinary stay in Paris in the end of the seventies into a dizzying career studded with success. There have been two decisive episodes in my life, the first one was the time I spent in Paris, the second one was when I met Giorgio Armani. But let's start with the first one, I went to France to study at Studio Bercot, and being a journalist I had free access to all the fashion shows, it was a privilege that quickly transformed me into a "spy of fashion". Brazil www.kristinati.it 17 was hungry for new trends because of the dictator and because it was situated on the margins of the world. I, on the other hand, had everything close, so therefore I started to regularly send packages with information to the Brazilian textile industry. That's how my name started to circulate. I organized the first fashion show with foreign designers in Brazil, using Brazilian textiles and attracting fashion icons of the caliber of Jean Paul Gaultier. I wrote for the American magazine Interview and I had a column in Vogue Brazil. It was exactly during those years that I discovered that I didn't have even a minimal vocation to become a designer, when I returned to Brazil in 1985 I opened a fashion consulting firm. In 1988 I was called up by Vila Romana, who just had obtained the license for Giorgio Armani in Brazil: It was Giorgio who had chosen me, I have learnt a lot from him, most of all attention to detail. Everything is a detail in luxury fashion, from the employee's uniforms to the cocktails served at the fashion shows. Some years later, Brazil abandoned the policy of protectionism and opened the doors to import. At that point the big fashion houses preferred direct export to licensing. I decided to present a project with a men's fashion multi-brand store to Eliana Tranchesi, who at the time was the owner of DASLU, the most exclusive commercial centre in Sao Paolo. That's how DASLU Homem was born, which rapidly became the largest clothing brand for men in entire South America, I brought more than 60 brands to Brazil in 7 years, 40 of them were Italian. Currently I'm working exclusively on the creation of a new men's collection for Lis Blanc, which will come out in February. My collaboration with Italy continues, the Italian brands that wants to enter in Brazil knocks on my door first and then on the Consulate's. I deeply believe in a profitable joint venture with Italy; the Made In Italy is still very expensive for Brazil and the tax added on imported goods makes this process even more prohibitive, until now only the most renown brands have been able to cross the Brazilian borders, but there are a lot of other high quality brands that are not known to the Brazilian consumer. The ideal solution is a union of the Italian know how ( tailoring, embroidery, weaving etc) with the local industry and to produce for the internal market, that's what's happening in China, Turkey, Portugal. It could be a possible meeting point between two countries and our manpower would greatly benefit from this. The Made in Italy is magical for Brazil, it's a concept that englobes fashion, quality and luxury. Brazil is trendy and arouses curiosity. Our participation as Guest Nation at Pitti Uomo was a confirmation on this, Brazilian designers has reaped enormous success and the limited volume of sales is not a symptom of a lack of interest from the multibrand stores but a direct consequence of the price, our clothing is still too expensive to export. Fashion is an international movement today, the creativity and the inspiration comes from all the world, it's a collective journey. The Brazilian has a style much more defined now compared to the past, there is no longer the need to copy, twenty years ago they copied but now there are designers that create. I do really believe in the Latin America's potential, it will be an inspirational muse in the years to come, we will export creativity. Style is an essential component of a person, that why I creawww.kristinati.it 18 ted a short course with four lessons called "how to discover your own style". When you have a style it's as if you had a brand, people remembers you, for instance, if you have style you'll never receive a gift that's not good, because people will always know what you like, they will never be mistaken on what you like. I have a very polished look, I dare to say almost minimalist, I use quite a neutral range of colours: white, black, grey and marine blue, I prefer red accessories. My style doesn't change with trends, in every new collection I look for combinations that reflects me. When I open my wardrobe I find exactly what I want to wear, the wardrobe can't be an archive of fashion with items abandoned since decades. When I shop I'm very selective, I'm concerned by ht equality of the textiles, I prefer linen trousers, shirts with a perfect cut, the indispensable pashmina. I only travel with hand luggage and for shorter stays, I organize three looks in matching each other, two pair of shoes, one pair of earrings for the evening. It happens often that I go directly from the office to a business dinner, I always have a pouch (in satin or with sequins) which is easily transformed into an evening bag. EXCESS, LUXURY AND EXCELLENCE. EXCESS: When dressing, one can always eliminate something, to get rid of that kind of excess is great. In life it's the same, the more you are able to be a minimalist the better, excess is not sustainable, therefore to have excess means not being politically correct. In fashion excess isn't chic, the behavior itself isn't elegant, as when someone buys ten Hermès bags in different colours...and, by contradiction, there is no sin in fashion. Anna Dello Russo is a living example, if the thing is done with confidence it stops to be excess and becomes style. LUXURY: Living doing what you want to do, to be yourself, to have your own style, to not dress according to others, to be yourself in your own skin. EXCELLENCE: When everything is in perfect harmony, as an orchestra, everything matches, there are no wrong notes. It can be a shop window decorated well or a dish prepared with extreme attention. To me excellence is the detail, that detail that makes the difference. Molti elementi storici accomunano les années ‘30 a oggi. It seems difficult to speak, in these turbulent times, defined by many as a chrisis, about fashion and vintage aesthetics, since you could immediately have the idea of superficiality and decadence worthy of the best appearances of Boni de Castellane and Drieu La Rochelle. Instead, looking at the past is one of the greatest acts of depth and futurism that one can accomplish. Perhaps the same '30s, even if just focusing on their sensibility of taste and fashion, may give us the keys to fundamental understanding of the present and to give us a glimmer of hope for the future. That is, to dive in for a search of unique vintage may be more than an amulet to ward off bad omens that lurk in our everyday life today. Today has many historical elements in common with the 30's. One came out of the crisis of '29, whose trains persisted in all sectors and social class, and the material possibilities were reduced. Despite a certain aura of pessimism, fashion and the designers, just to overcome certain problems due to a rather unfavorable economical situation, sought alternatives to never lose the quest for beauty that still remains a salvation and eternalizes all things. If Coco Chanel began producing evening wool jersey dresses, on the other hand Madeleine Vionnet gave luster to the female shapes with revolutionary clothing lines in super fine crepe. The desire, much like that of our days, to balance production costs and the wish not ever lessen the silhouette of the bodies upon which beautiful clothes and accessories will rest, gave birth to creations that remain immortal. Projects that are - and it could not be otherwise - a constant source of inspiration for today's fashion houses and for all passionated connoisseurs or the simply curious who understand the value of masterpiece that remain over time, they also makes 26 us understand how globally difficult times can be opportunities for artistic and cultural renaissance. Just think, for example, the Hollywood glamour that went crazy in those years and which may have contact points, albeit with some differences, with the frenzied search of celebrities and fame of our time. So it's not madness to admire the shoes designed by Salvatore Ferragamo for Judy Garland in 1938 and take this work of art as a real starting point for today's fashion designers. After all, the collapse of Wall Street and the spectra of a World War II were more than present, but this did not prevent the pursuit of beauty but rather celebrated a joy to live much less buttoned other periods, moreover seasoned by a touch of practical tailoring due to the economic demands of the time. "Someone" said that everything is art, design, fashion began with the '30s. It may perhaps seem a radical statement, but there are elements that our aesthetic sensibility today has certainly absorbed and sometimes it is good to remember to not abandon hope for a better future and a better fashion. Fashion that keeps in touch with past always so present. Some simple advice for vintage lovers or simply neophytes, who should never miss some of the symbolic pieces of the 30's in their wardrobe. - Definitely a must-have is an evening dress made with diagonal lines from the prestigious fashion house Madeleine Vionnet. One of the greatest merits that must be attributed to the French designer is to have liberated the female body from stiff corsets and girdles of the early '900. Presenting pieces that are modern as ever and give glory to female bodies by enhancing their bewitching inner light. - Another cult item is, or perhaps it is better to speak in plural: the clothes of Elsa Schiaparelli. The introduction of a simple device during the thirties revolutionized not only how to dress, but also the way of wearing clothes. We are speaking about the zip, of course. But it's only one of the reasons why it's hard not to have an item of an Italian fashion designer who greatly affected the aesthetics of fashion. Everything from her sweater, the liberating lines, the colour navy and cream -the "Schiap", as she was called in France, gave birth to "works" that outspends time. Not to be missed. - And then, of course, how to be without a dress, or just an accessory, by a "certain" Coco Chanel, who during those years ascended to the mount Olympus of fashion. Also creating dresses with a soft silhouette for all occasions, such as the lightweight beach pajamas. Finally, it is difficult to leave a large Italian bottier aside when talking about the foundation of fashion. Clearly it's easy to understand who we are referring to: Salvatore Ferragamo. His shoes were a true object of desire for women and men around the world already in those years, to have a pair of original shoes from the time could but give luster to your wardrobe and your figure. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING FASANO. "To inherit a name is much more important than inheriting a place" explains Rogerio Fasano, the charismatic ambassador of calm luxury, understated as the English would say, as the absolute masters in expressing concepts economizing words. Fasano is considered to be the largest luxury brand in Brazil today, it's a synonym with sophistication and elegance, with four boutique hotels, sixteen restaurants and a broad range of on going projects that shows the consolidation of an empire, century-old by now, that started with the arrival of Fasano in Sao Paolo in 1902. The multiplying agent was Rogerio, who has revived the fortunes of the family turning a restaurant in decline into an icon of excellence: it's due to him the attention to detail, the cult of the customer, the perfect balance between quality of service and product offered. Fasano Rio, opened in 2007 and born by the unexpected meeting between the enfant terrible Philippe Starck and ultra classic Rogerio, is a space which is smooth, curved and in perfect symbiosis with the impalpable sensuality of Ipanema. The colors reminiscent of sand and cliffs that surround the city, linen and wood alternate calling for a journey back to the patinated sixties of Bossa Nova. The comfort factor seems to be the glue in the design, it is rumored that customers unwillingly leave the hotel, seduced to become an integral part of Fasano. A puzzle of messages in relief reveals illustrious "fasanofili": wealthy heiresses, supermodels, influential politicians and Hollywood directors, that is, lovers of tailor-made luxury for which‘There is no Brasil without Fasano Hotels’, as Diane Von Furstenberg said. 29 Fasano Rio. Come? Senza dubbio. Born in Empoli and Florentine by adoption, he inherited his passion for cooking from his grandmother, a stout Tuscan chef, who made him familiar with cooking and regional recipes since early childhood. His professional growth is marked by the encounter with Chiappini Dattilo, chef at the Antica Osteria del Teatro, in Piacenza, where he was introduced to the spheres of haute cuisine and earned his first Michelin star. Then followed ten years of experience at the prestigious Wine Pinchiorri in Florence and two more stars. Brazil arrived unexpectedly: a new culture, a new language and the possibility of having a child, thanks to less strict laws on IVF than in Italy. "My daughter was born three years ago, here in Brazil," Luca says proudly, chef at Fasano Al Mare, considered one of the best restaurants in Brazil. It is said that culture passes by the table first of all places, I imagine that it's a great responsibility to be a spokesman of such a visceral aspect of our cultural identity, how do you experience this? It is a difficult responsibility, because it is a cultural aspect of continuous change. The big meals together that once was common in Italy are disappearing, families keeping together as they did when living in the countryside are less and less. The passage of recipes stops at the first generation, the grandmother pass them on to her daughter, but rarely they reach the niece. The so-called housekeeper, guardian of the secrets of Italian cuisine, is starting to relax, she's the victim of a grim era where one don't have any time to cook. To transport our culinary heritage to Brazil is not easy and there are many factors to our disadvantage, such as the lack of ingredients and different cooking methods. I am a stubborn person and obstacles do not scare me, but Brazil still must grow in order to offer a 100% Italian cuisine. The distance is not only geographical but also cultural, has it influenced your cooking in some way? How? Without doubt. I must say it has improved a lot since my arrival, I initially had a very strong impact. I used to work in a restaurant with three stars, and I found myself in this restaurant that, even if it's number one in Brazil,is playing in another league. Rogerio Fasano is an extremely traditional person, I slowly adjusted to his line to understand what the Brazilian look for and thus help him and suggest the Italian product. The biggest challenge in your opinion is the introduction of new flavors or the ritual of socialization through the food that is so typical of us Italians? I think it's easier to teach the Brazilian real Italian cooking, the cult of spending time with his family at the table does not work here, the Brazilian is much more free, the family being together doesn't necessarily revolve around food. When you first arrived in Brazil, you spent a month with Salvatore Loi, chef of the restaurant Fasano in Sao Paolo, what were his teachings? Salvatore Loi and I are two different epochs, he is perfect to 34 follow the line of Rogerio Fasano, which is the traditional Italian cuisine, I revisit the traditions without destroying them, improving the dishes with new techniques available, I give a new aspect to our typical dishes, especially the Tuscan ones who are delicious but sometimes a bit heavy, especially for Rio de Janeiro where all are devotees of the body and fitness enthusiasts. How would you describe your cooking? My cooking is simple but with impact, where you clearly can distinguish the flavors. Use three, four, five ingredients at the most, to not pass the dish, not the recipe, but the Italian ingredients together. I work a lot with regional recipes and I like to merge, harmonize, match, for example, a potato cake from Naples with a meat typical for Tuscany. Tell me a moment of glory. The moments of glory came after a year of opening the restaurant, at the beginning I had a very aggressive impact, because customers who came to eat at the Fasano Al Mare expected recipes and preparation identical to those of the existing restaurants in San Fasano Paolo and Rio. So many people were disappointed. My victory was the perseverance to understand the tastes of my clients, and once conquered, to hear them say that this is the best restaurant in Brazil. Another victory is when I can make Rogerio Fasano happy. The customer that you never had and for which you would like to cook. My parents, I'd like to show them how far I have come, I owe this success also to them, they have always supported and accompanied me. A dish that has made you turn your head to Brazil. There is a dish that I can't remove from the menu, it's a tart of fresh pasta stuffed with veal stew with a creamy parmesan and roasted meat sauce. It's a simple thing, but, as Ducasse says, simplicity is an essential ingredient for the success of a dish. What's cooking? A tribute to Gualtiero Marchesi, the risotto with gold. Angelo Galasso 8-10 Hans Road Chelsea - London SW3 1Rx 45 ANGELO GALASSO. Angelo Galasso is a veritable volcano of ideas and words. Born in Apulia, now he can define himself English, or indeed an adopted Londoner, given that his creations are accommodated by the City since years. Angelo is one of those ambassadors of Made in Italy in the world, the one with a capital "M", that pay attention to detail, the tailoring of clothes that have neither time or price. "Mr. Galasso" has always had the creative genius: the first for himself and then for others, has created clothing men's style without ever giving up that pinch of creativity that distinguish him from others. Starting from the famous shirt with watch cuff is also appreciated by the lawyer Agnelli, exhibited at the London Design Museum, just to understand the creative range of the masterpieces the fashion designer born in Francavilla Fontana. In London, at Angelo's boutique in Chelsea, one of the richest and most chic neighborhoods in the capital of the United Kingdom. It could not be otherwise, since Angelo is a truly global designer, and because in the near future other stores are planned to open, stores that will carry his name around the world. Those who buy the clothes of the Italian designer are wealthy people from around the world, from Russia, China, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil. 46 Angelo Galasso 8-10 Hans Road Chelsea - London SW3 1RX But there is no wealth to be ashamed, as confirmed by Galasso's words, since we are all nouveaux riches. There are also many stars of the Hollywood firmament among his customers, and there are those who simply want a style that leaves a mark without exaggerating or being flashy. All items are carefully hand-stitched by Italian craftsmen - in Tuscany to be exact - that Angelo entrusts the realization of his concept of male total look. The result is a unique product that does not leave you indifferent, to the degree that it even bewildered a star as exigent as Al Pacino, who wanted custom-made garments by Angelo Galasso for the film that he directed and presented at the Venice Film Festival, "Wilde Salomé." If a boutique in Via Montenapoleone in Milan is planned to open in the very near future, and will not wait for the opening of the flagship store in Moscow AG,however, New York is probably the city that celebrates the Italian designer most, giving him 850 square meters of the Plaza Hotel to display and sell his "works" made in Italy. After all, the secret of the Italian fashion designer's success is as simple as difficult to realize: attention to detail and bespoke tailoring transposed into ready to wear garments made with fine yarns and special details, refined but never banal with that little extra. So if the Financial Times called Angelo Galasso the most innovative image maker of our time there is a reason. The designer of Apulia, as reflected by his words, do not ever skimp on quality. He and his creative staff create impeccable clothes and accessories, with constant attention, the finest materials and attention to detail. AG jeans cost about five thousand pounds but if you want to know why, it is ok to ask, as X Magazine Made in Italy did, directly to Angelo. It's a timeless work of art, is the response received, that plows through trends because of the type of cotton used and for the inedited style, never politically correct, as Angelo is however. However, the choice of an unconventional look that makes the wearer of these precious garments shine is not a trivial matter and therefore to decide to have an aesthetic as simple as refined is priceless and doesn't need any excuses. I l s a b r a ge h a o r i g i n i l o nt a n e . SABRAGE. Do you want to organize an unforgettable ning with a very special service? Well, it's possible, combining the pleasure of wine at the spectacle of an ancient gesture: sabrage. This is an ancient way to open the champagne or rather, our Italian bubbles. It's a fascinating gesture, triumphant, exhibitionist enough to celebrate an irrepressible joie de vivre. Never mind if the wine is white or rosé, or extrabrut or not dosè, if it's served with a meal or in the end with a dessert, even the year becomes irrelevant if it will be opened with a sword, that will charm your guests. This scenographic opening, called sabrage, is mostly restricted to a few important occasions, often used at ceremonials. It's a technique that is handed down, it requires study and that few are the people who know how to do it. We will explain step by step how to make a perfect cut. The instructions are pretty simple but the real difficulty of this particular way of opening is the determination when you hit the bottleneck. this valuable and unique art Jean Claude Jalloux, a French restaurant owner, founded the brotherhood Sabre d'Or in 1986. The association has about 500 members but in the world there are about 35,000 people who have undergone the ritual. This is a real ritual that follows very precise steps and requires careful study. It culminates with the enthronement ceremony of the new "sabragers". The embassy of the brotherhood of the Golden Sabre was founded in Italy in 2005. Its representative Elodio De Nardi was honored with a solemn ceremony by the very Grand Maître Jean-Claude Jalloux. So this is an ancient art that fascinates and intrigues many and that is spreading more and more because of its spectacular nature. In this edition we have provided the technique for opening bottles in a special and surprising way, but in the next X number we will provide you with all the directions and information on what wine to use with accurate insights on the most interesting and tantalizing Italian sparkles bubbles. A small historical background. The sabrage has faraway origins. The sabotage is a French tradition inherited from the Russian Court and the Napoleonic Cavalry. It is a ritual of joy and victory. In fact, this practice has become popular in Napoleonic France when the army visited the aristocratic domains belonging to the empire. The sword was the weapon of choice of the light cavalry of the army during the period immediately after the French Revolution. There were various celebrations given the many victories, the custom was to open the bottles in a convenient way with something easily available. It seems that during one of these celebrations Napoleon himself said, "Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it. " thereby encouraging the use and practice. This is a gesture as spectacular as unique, in fact few people know to do it properly. 69 MARRAKECH: ITALIAN AND FEMININE. surround us on the same time. I'm being massaged, "stretched" and rubbed with a horsehair glove, then buckets with hot water, then cold, then hot again. I feel as if annihilated and as if time didn't exist anymore, I don't know if it's morning or evening... I don't care anymore! I go out, it's morning and a fantastic breakfast is waiting for me in the riad. I can't but think of this experience as similar to the one that ancient Romans lived each day. I think of fantastic reconstructions of the baths of Caracalla in Rome with the huge spaces populated by characters, by now no longer silent and motionless. "My" riad ( a building with patio/garden) is not far away, I'm welcome by a refined and familiar atmosphere, a rare thing in the medina. The basin in the middle refreshes during the scorching summers and collects rainwater during the winters, that are mild but often wet due Marrakech's proximity to the Atlas mountains. We can find an "impluvium" in almost every house, often constructed with clay bricks, when not in stone or soil, they are all characterized by the presence of a central courtyard, with all the rooms facing it. Independent microcosms, the riads often host many extended families, as one would say today, with defined rules and the distribution of space defined by century-old family hierarchies. A very small annex to the internal construction, the "Dourya" consists of two rooms joined by a small central room with a roof light. It allowed the head of the family to receive strangers in their home without letting them come in contact with the women at home, not even Un angolo del “Dar al sultan” 71 visually. The same intention and "jealousy" eliminates the windows towards the road, that's why the the narrow streets only have gates and high walls. Planimetrically the lack of openings toward the street made it possible to construct the houses one beside the other. Putting related family groups from the same area, occupation, ethnicity, religion in the same space. A concentration and high "human density" in relatively small spaces was created this way. My host, a Milanese who fell in love with Marrakech, bought a beautiful renovated dar (building) and made some improvements by making it more familiar by introducing small but refined details. Also with hospitality and attention to detail in a way that unite Italy and Morocco in a sincere embrace. The Italian style, or rather the Italian way of life, is present in the medina of Marrakech with rare but significant signs. In every case, they have been able to integrate the architectural tradition, crafts and Moroccan decorations with the search for something unique and an artistic unity that is so typical for Italy. Excellent names come immediately to my mind: the Bulgari hotel construction site in the chic district of the medina or restoration curated by Alessandra Lippini Bologna, a former fashion stylist. Jet-setters and designers have turned to his "Ministry of Taste" to fulfill their dream. This way the old, crumbling but fascinating riads have been transformed into very special houses, where the forms, materials and colors, stolen from the local craftsmanship, create environments that are unmatched in the medina. Franca Sozzani, the legendary editor of Vogue Italy, has almost a "small neighborhood". Her home unites 10 different houses, the various patios are a series of visual experiences and feelings that no other place, two and a half hour flight from Milan, can arouse. One of the patios is a small domestic jungle; in another one there's an enormous pool which reflects the square of the sky that every riad guard. The mosaic that covers 72 it is black and white. It amuses me to think that Kris Ruhs was inspired by the dynamism of the two-color and abstract design of Roman baths... obsession! Also the interior design with collections of Berber carpets and walls decorated with abstract and ancient symbols are out of the box: dreamlike, fantastic. The home of Marta Marzotto "at Marzotto" is fantasy in its pure state, eccentric, colorful, imaginative, a bit like its owner. The artist Rossella Gilli has instead chosen the simplicity of beige and blue, illuminated by the white of the large patio. This is is the Italian and feminine side of Marrakech; a city where excellent, special, refined women leave a discreet sign since many years. Marella Agnelli was one of the first. She has transformed a large plot of land with a spring into a lush garden, park... paradise. Ain Kassimou, the source, and a pavilion in the middle, designed by the friend and architect Gae Aulenti. It's in Moorish style but with the size and the harmony of proportions, it's a reminiscent of a Renaissance jewel. An excellent presence of creative, unique, special women in a society and a culture which is sexist, but in a city that is a bewitching, discreet, fascinating, mysterious...woman! The wonderful world of "Marrachi" of Franca Sozzani is also for a few paying guests. A dip in the pool, used as a set for one of Prince's music videos, is an experience to tell. Derb Zaouja - www.ville-esclusive.com Wake up at Muezzin! Jemaa El Fna, the heart of the city, is within walking distance, the neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. 78 FALCONRY. A MILLENARY LOVE. "Just as a falcon, a long while on the wing, Who, without spotting lure or prey, Makes the falconer cry, "Ah, you’re coming down," Descends, tired, with a hundred turnings To where he set out so swiftly, and perches, Aloof and furious, far off from his master" (Inferno, Canto XVII) (Translation: "As the falcon without having seen a prey or heard the call of the falconer makes the falconer disappointed. It returns defeated where he was flown full of confidence.") The falcon is without doubt the greatest living expression of flying elegance and predation. It has inspired poems, odes, paintings. Books and movies have been inspired by the falcon. In the two opening verses, Dante, the sublime poet, takes the falcon as an example and describe what an absolutely exceptional fact it is when the falcon misses its prey. And then in Boccaccio's novel about Frederick Alberighi, the magnificent falcon becomes the main character, which is sacrificed for the love of beautiful Jane. It is offered as food to her that she had come to ask for a gift for her sick child. And yet unforgettable pages of literature are written with clear references to hunting with a falcon (falconry scenes are described in works of Brunetto Latini, in the Poem of my Cid, in Celestina by Fernando de Rojas...). Hunting with birds is an ancient art. L’Ars venandi cum avibus experienced its heydays in the Middle Ages, but we have much older testimonies. Great historical characters were lovers of this discipline. It is said that Genghis Khan was a child who ventured on the mountaintops of the steppe to catch small birds of prey and then trained them to hunt. He even captured two small eagles as a gift to his father Yesugei Khan, head of the tribe of wolves, from which he had learned the noble art. The falcon had a very important role in literature, politics and costumes in the time between the 11th and the the 15th century, it wasn't only for its hunting skills. It was also seen as a magical practice linked to the symbolism of the falcon and the knight. It's in this period of history that the first scientific text of ornithology is written, the Liber de arte venandi cum avibus, The art of hunting with birds", by the emperor and king of Sicily, Fredric II of Hohenstaufen. The practice of this art of hunting, and the consequence of raptors at the court, is a constant in the life of knights and ladies. Falcons also play a considerable political role (falcons are involved in the signing of treaties, are part of the dowry gifts, etc.) The falcon (as other birds of prey used for hunting, especially Goshawks and Sparrowhawks) has a perfect body: his line is slightly compact, it's designed by nature to fight and to assault, almost a L'aquila delle steppe si appresta a spiccare il volo. Foto di Franco Biondi projection of the boldness and courage of the man who remains on the horse, launching his living weapons into the space of the sky that is forbidden to his earthly foot- Giovane Falcone Pellegrino in picchiata. Foto di Franco Biondi steps. The falcon is a tall, aggressive animal, a symbol of untamable noble pride, together with its virility. The ancient art of hunting with birds and train them to do so, is experiencing a renaissance in recent decades, but nevertheless it's always presented as a challenge. The search continues for that delicate balance is established between the falcon and its falconer is surrounded by a particular fascination. It drives the man to prove himself every time, launching the falcon from his hand, watching it to soar independent and solitary, free to decide whether to return to the fist of his companion, crowning the silent pact with the man, or to embrace freedom instead. The alliance falcon-man tests the commitment of man, who must ensure the space and time required for a proper practice of falconry. Human error breaks the idyll and to avoid it, the falconer must treat every day that delicate, emotional and unique balance with the raptors, which is the heart of this art. In recent years the media exposure of this ancient art has become increasingly intense, in search for new spaces, a new equilibrium in a curious mixture of past and future. In fact, it has a strange effect to watch movies, news or forums about something that has its origins way back in time. However, what remains unchanged is the relationship that develops between man and animal. The falcon, by nature, is about as diametrically opposite to be close to a human being. Yet between the falcon and the falconer and there is something inexplicable. It's relationship of mutual dependence. The good falconer knows that he always must devote himself to his animal. Especially away from the hunting season when inactivity could harm the falcon, reducing it's exceptional muscles and even leading to death. Many species of birds of prey are used for falconry, but not all are equal in terms of hunting nor in terms of training. For this reason that the falconer must carefully choose the most suitable kind evaluating a set of parameters before buying a bird. Meanwhile there is the distinction between high-flying birds of prey (hawks, they fly L'aquila delle steppe in volo. Foto di Franco Biondi high and then hits the prey) and lowflying birds of prey (goshawk, Harris, Sparrowhawk, they hunt starting directly from the hand of the falconer in pursuit of a prey). Civetta delle Nevi. Foto Maria Ginevra Brami High-flying falcons therefore need open areas, while other raptors prefer lowflying areas with rich vegetation (eg forests). In particular, the Harris Buzzard can best express themselves in green areas with plants and and trees where it can rest in order to take their prey by surprise. Its speed when it takes off from the hand it is not sufficient to reach a prey in direct pursuit. The Goshawk and Sparrowhawk on the other hand, thanks to their very short wings, can kickstart from the hand and therefore a greater ability to reach a prey from a standing still. The Sparrowhawk, unlike the Goshawk, is quite small and can only take preys up to the size of a magpie. The Goshawk can attack both birds (partridge, pheasant, partridge, ducks, hens) and mammals (rabbits, hares, small hares). Flying high, the Peregrine Falcon is the best for hunting fast ducks, but has excellent results even with the Grey Partridge, Rock Ptarmigan and Pheasants. The Saker Falcon and large hybrids like the Gyrfalcon (Gyr/Saker and Gyr/Peregrin) are particularly indicated 79 for the hunting of big corvids (Crows and Corvids). So the choice of raptor to be used should be based on the type of territory where the falconer will go hunting and species that can be hunted. But another important parameter is definitely what the training and management in captivity is like. Goshawk and Peregrine prey are more complex from this point of view and are not recommended for beginners, a new falconer should direct his or her attention to the Buzzard Harris if the intuition is to engage in low flying areas with a rich in vegetation; a Hybrid falcon or a Saker falcon if the falconeer would want to devote himself to flying high in open zones. In Italy there are 9 species of hawks, precisely: The Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug) is one of the biggest falcons after the existing Gyrfalcon and typical of desert areas. It's rare in Italy and an irregular migrator. It's very popular in falconry because of its size, also because it's able to capture prey in flight (such as Peregrine) as well on the ground, Arabs actually used it for hunting gazelles! In Italy we have a big part of the entire European population of Lanner (mainly concentrated in Central and Southern Italy). It's a smaller type of falcon than the Saker and the Peregrin, and is quite valued in falconry for its agility, also when capturing prey on land. When it dives it's capable of exceeding 300 km/h and exclusively captures birds (from Ducks to Starlings but also small passerines, waders, swallows and swifts). It's very popular with falconers for its flying capacity and speed. Today the Peregrine population in Italy is recovering well, it occupies all available reproductive niches, even in cities, where they mostly hunt starlings and pigeons. 80 Weight (grams) Overall lenght (mm) Wing Span (mm) Wing (mm) Male 400 - 650 380 - 420 800 - 950 280 - 300 Female 700 - 1000 400 - 480 900 - 1100 320 - 340 Tail (mm) 130 - 145 140 - 160 Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae) nests only in Sardinia, is very similar in its normal form to the Peregrine, but there's also a dark form. It can be distinguished not only by its size but also by its longer tail. As its Italian name says, this raptor is a specialist in hunting small birds such as Skylarks, but often it also integrates its diet with large insects. Again his name betrays its eating habits: indeed, it feeds on insects (beetles, grasshoppers, crickets and locusts in particular). The Italian population of this small falcon is quite small and endangered, it's concentrated in small colonies that breed in limited areas in Italy. It flies very close to the ground with an extraordinary speed chasing swallows, larks and other small birds. Because of these flying skills and agility was much appreciated in falconry, it was used for a particularly fascinating and exciting hunting, lark hunting. In Italy you can see it only in wintertime but it doesn't reproduce. Just think of the great work done since the sixties in order to reintroduce the Peregrine falcon in the wild. It was decimated by the use of fertilizers and chemicals such as DDT, used in industrial agriculture. The care and breeding of birds of prey is a knowledge that is built up through years of hard and patient work, the result is made available to the entire community. The performances are an opportunity to introduce falconry to the general public. It's also an occasion to bring young people and students closer to nature. It's a moment of relaxation and training, entertainment and learning more about biology and the nature. For those who have falconry as a profession, the performance is also an occasion to connect with others, a moment of intense emotions, communication and for sharing a cultural heritage that is a patrimony of all humanity. Silvia Baracchi nelle vesti di Falconiere All this gives a measure of how nothing is random in this wonderful art that falconry is. But of course, as always happens, there's also those who argue that it's cruel to the hunted prey. They forget that falconry is only and exclusively a celebration of everything for which the falcon was born. Flying and hunting. What is cruel is without any doubt is the use of cryptogamics and toxins which has weakened the wild population, poaching, the theft of nestlings for the illegal market. But falconry is different, certainly far from the middle ages when crimes against falcons was punished with cutting the hands off and even hanging. This art is man and his raptor breathing together. It's about uniting two souls, one of which moves on a two-dimensional space while the other is absolute master of the open space. Falconry, properly and professionally practised, offers all those who want the opportunity to observe the world of birds of prey up close, in full respect of their natural flight behavior without subjecting the animal to artificial teachings. Besides, the one who knows how to ride as well is able to offer the public a journey through time. To show falconry as it was practiced at court, helped with music and costumes and with different saddles and way of riding, one can stage hunts as they looked like from medieval times till the famous Spanish Riding School. THE LUXURY OF A GARDEN. NICOLETTA'S GARDEN. A gate, one of the many fine old gates of the Appian road, a road in the immense historical memory, with a unique charm suitable for a queen.... regina viarum. It is said that when Magnani got to know that Rossellini, after going to Ciampino airport to pick up Bergman, went for a ride with his cab on the Appian road, she murmured: "then he's truly in love..." And how could we blame her: to see the road today in this beautiful Roman October weather, it has the appearance of a queen, and her jewels are the gardens. I'm here today to visit one. I fear that, having already seen in it books and magazines, can have a déjà vu effect on me; I approach so smugly with the October light as my accomplice. I fall in love at first sight... how could one not believe in love at first sight!!!! It's only 20 years old, cultivated on two acres of abandoned land, but seems to always have been there. Nicoletta has chosen a prestigious dad for it, Paul Pejrone, the "gardener" architect . Originally there was nothing: just some holm oak and some pine trees. Nicoletta has kept the garden as it was set from the origin, only trying to accompany the natural growth of plants; an ecosystem 84 which also the man is a part of. There's a thick Mediterranean vegetation that has taken possession of the land with the time. Walking around one recognizes Viburnum, Phillyrea, pomegranates gently placed on a huge lawn. There are few colors around: white, lilac, blue, the garden is the protagonist in the sequence of rooms around the house. Perfumed Laurel hedges to protect it from the garden, while lower hedges of Boxwood draw squares for vegetables and flowers. In the Roman Villandry artichokes flirt with the Felix peony, an apple tree with a varied collection of ornamental peppers, spectators, bouquet of mint and sage. Decorative sage with long flowers stalks, that we had met at the entrance, with their violet colour they pop into the eye with bouquets of white roses. Under a pergola of Muscat grapes, embellished with sinuous branches, we see tomatoes and eggplant on well ordered bamboo trellises, woven by the skilled hands of Robert and Danilo, the guardian angels of the garden. Then still raspberries and red sentinel apple trees that give flowers. In the back of the garden there is an old Victorian wooden kiosk, the only architectural structure of the garden. Inside it houses a rich collection of violets, the most loved flower by poets, the favorite of Duse: the violet loves the shade, but some varieties are resistant to the sun, some like heat some cold, some with large flowers, which look like velvet, other with tiny, tiny ones. Just beside, there are huge leaves of Roman zucchini dotted with long stems of the purple allium, a wrought iron gazebo keeps climbing lamon beans and decorative mini pumpkins. Pejrone created a pond to complete the ecosystem, starting from an existing small pond, which has become populated with ducks, carp, frogs over time and every year beautiful herons stop by. Roberto has built log cabins located by the water to make guests' stay more enjoyable. I lose myself, stunned by the smell and the rigor that I sense, a big round tub is filled is like a goblet full of water lilies, hyacinths, anemones, water forget-menot blue and white, blue iris and long, slender dark green horsetail (Equisetum). I find myself on huge lawns bordered with agapanthus that seems to be protected by small white roses, "boa" instead of Ostrich, Sicilian Jasmine which wrap around Roman pines, along with dog roses, bobbie james, rambling rector... what precious jewels! All the antique furniture that I see in the garden come from the garden show "two days of the garden" at Castle of Masino: Nicoletta goes there every year in search of unusual plants to bring to Rome, she explains that Masino is like for Gardening what Milan is for fashion. I go out, it's almost sunset, autumn, an autumn which doesn't want to leave the summer, a few days it will begin to color this garden ocher yellow, orange, transforming it again; another change of clothes, and then another, preserving this place of pure poetry. This is what nature gives back to us for the love that we are showing it. www.associazionemadeinitaly.it
