Bobbio, nella quale, dalle prove EXPERIMENTATION study of blistering causes on polyamide strips used in thermal break profiles 1. Introduction Thermal break profiles are gaining more and more popularity due to their performance in terms of thermal insulation if installed on door and window frames. Higher insulation is achieved thanks to one polyamide strip being mounted mechanically between two profiles. As a consequence the strip undergoes the same painting treatment as the profiles with the final user requiring to have an equivalent aesthetic appearance. But the results may differ very much from those obtained on the profiles. The paint over the strip may indeed display blisters of different sizes or be unevenly distributed over the surface. When questioned about these defects, painters or painting experts rightly say that painters paint aluminium profiles and therefore they are not responsible for what happens on polyamide strips. But customers insist, with the discussion ending in courts or in the choice of other materials, and in any case with negative consequences for the Aluminium industry. The problem must be studied to get to adequate solutions. The Association AITAL entrusted QUALITAL a research aimed at identifying the causes of blistering and, possibly, of the failed formation of a smooth-looking organic film. Basing on this request, a working group was created involving experts, QUALITAL laboratory included, to carry out tests and to answer to still open questions. 2. Tests and results The initial test schedule has been developed basing mainly on the results of the Dissertation of Mr. Bobbio. The main results of the dissertation were presented at the AITAL Meeting in Padova on October 23, 2009. Starting from these preliminary indications, the team experimentally verified the results obtained for the dissertation and developed further laboratory tests to identify the causes of blistering. The test schedule was developed during the meetings below and led to the relevant test reports: • Meeting of 29-10-2010 1. The test was carried out on 10 specimens per each strip type. The values in the diagram of fig. 1 represent the mean value of the measurements obtained on the 10 specimens of each type of strip. All types of strips were collected from the warehouse and showed approximately a 2% weight loss after an 8-hour-long stoving. b) Treatments in different environments The subsequent operation was that of putting the dried polyamide strips in environments with different humidity so as to assess the relevant absorption degree. In detail, the environments below were chosen: The results may be summarized as follows: Influence of humidity As already stated in Mr. Bobbio’s dissertation, a subsequent group of tests ascertained that polyamide may be regarded as a sponge, as clearly shown by the results (fig. 1, 2 and 3) of the controls carried out on five different types of polyamide strips. I risultati, fig. • Immersion - Immersion in H2O at a temperature of 40°C (2 strips per type) • Hum - humidity chamber (40°C and 80% relative humidity) (2 strips per type) • RT - controlled temperature and humidity chamber (23°C and 50% relative humidity) (2 strips per type) For each condition 2 specimens per type were tested. The values in the diagram represent the mean value of the measurements obtained on the 2. Variazione % del tenore di umidità nei vari ambienti % change in humidity content for the different environments 3. La barretta di poliammide si adatta alle condizioni ambientali e in un tempo più o meno lungo raggiunge le condizioni di equilibrio con l’ambiente circostante The polyamide strip adapts to existing environmental conditions and reaches a balance with the surrounding environment in a longer or shorter time two specimens of each type of strip. The results - fig. 2 - clearly show that the polyamide strip can absorb a great quantity of humidity with almost homogeneous results on each type of ageing. Absorption in demineralised water is approximately 5%, while in the humidity chamber is between 2.5 and 3%. Obviously, the lower value was obtained in the thermostatic chamber. In all the situations the humidity content tends to increase over time. c) Conditioning At this stage, the strips of the previous tests were conditioned in a controlled temperature and humidity chamber to check if the humidity exchange with the environment happens also in this case. 8. 4. Variazioni di umidità dopo un ciclo termico di 200°C per 20’, a partire da diverse condizioni iniziali Humidity changes after a thermal cycle of 200°C for 20’, with different starting conditions d) Influence of the initial conditions of humidity on the curing of powder coatings At this stage the influence of the different contents of humidity was assessed for the different polyamide specimens after a thermal cycle (200°C for 20 min) simulating the curing cycle of coatings painted with thermosetting powders. In detail, the dissertation showed the results indicated in the diagram of fig. 4. e) Application of powder coatings An organic coating was applied on different types of strips with different degrees of humidity to check their appearance after treatment in the curing oven 5. Aspetto barretta con un minimo tenore di umidità (<1%) Appearance of strip with low humidity content (<1%) 6. Aspetto barretta con un tenore di umidità di 2-3% Appearance of strip with 2-3% of humidity content 7. Aspetto barretta con un elevato tenore di umidità (>5%) Appearance of strip with high humidity content (>5%) Appearance On a visual inspection the specimen left in the controlled temperature and humidity chamber does not show surface phenomena (fig. 5), whereas both the specimen placed in the humidity chamber (fig.6) and the one submerged in water (fig. 7) display surface swelling (blisters). Figg. 5-6-7 show that blistering is strictly connected to the humidity content of the strip. Further studies were carried out to calculate the maximum level of humidity that a strip can contain before blisters form over the coated surface. The results showed that up to 1% humidity the paint film distributes evenly without any bubble (see fig. 8 below). 8. RH1% 9. RH1,5% 10. 11. RH1% 13. RH1,5% When the humidity degree is between 1% and 2% the surface (see pictures 9 and 10) appears slightly rough due to the formation of small blisters similar to those appearing also in the cross section in figg. 11, 12, 13 and 14. The cross section photographs in figg. 11, 12, 13 and 14 show that blister formation happens also with 12. RH1,5% 3. Conclusioni 14. In this case bubbles are so small that the appearance of the strip is altered and its surface matt. 3. Conclusions Laboratory tests clearly show that blistering is caused exclusively by the presence of humidity in polyamide strips. Indeed when the water contained in the strips tries to evaporate due to the heat of the curing stage, the organic coating - passing from powder to semi-solid fluid status - blocks and traps it inside the paint film. The tests also assessed that the extent of the phenomenon depends on the quantity of water contained in the strip, as shown by the photographs. 29
