From Rome:
Take a train from Rome to Florence, another one to Pontedera and
then a bus to Volterra.
Take a train from the station at the airport to Rome Termini (the main
train station in Rome). You can buy the ticket at the airport for the
entire trip to Pontedera.
From Rome Termini take a train to Florence Santa Maria Novella.
There are two types of trains: Regionale (slow but cheap, takes 3.5
hours), and Eurostar (fast and more expensive, takes1.5 hour). From
Florence follow the directions above.

From Florence:
Take a bus from the airport to the train station in Florence, train from
Florence to Pontedera and then a bus from Pontedera to Volterra.
Take a shuttle bus from the Florence airport to the train station
(Santa Maria Novella). Take a train to Pontedera (any train in the
direction of Pisa - trains from Florence to Pontedera leave every
30 minutes.). From Pontedera follow the directions above (like from
Pisa). Travel time: approximately 2.5 hours

From Pisa:
Take a train from Pisa to Pontedera and then a bus from Pontedera
to Volterra.
There is a train station at the Pisa Airport. Check the train timetable
upon your arrival in Pisa. There are several trains throughout the day
which will take you from Pisa Airport directly to Pontedera, otherwise
you will need to change trains at Pisa Central station. All trains from
Pisa Central in the direction of Florence stop in Pontedera. There is a
train in this direction every 30 min.
The bus station in Pontedera is just outside train station. Take a bus
(CPT Line 500) from Pontedera to Volterra.
Travel time: approximately 2-2.5 hours
