Reading
CS Lewis was born in Belfast, Northern
Ireland in 1898. He went to school in
England, but always loved Ireland and
its culture. When he was young, he loved
stories about animals. He began writing
stories when he was a teenager. After school,
he went to Oxford University in 1916. The
First World War stopped his studies and
he joined the army. When the war finished,
he continued his studies and later became
a professor there like JRR Tolkien. He lived
the rest of his life in Oxford and died in
1963.
His first book was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, published in 1950.
It is about a magical world called ‘Narnia’ where animals can talk. The
children in the story enter Narnia through a wardrobe. CS Lewis wrote six
more books about Narnia. He finished the last book, The Last Battle, in 1956.
It won the Carnegie Medal, a very important prize for children’s literature.
Lewis’s books sell over a million copies a
year all over the world. In 2000 parents,
teachers and librarians voted The Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe the best children’s
book of the twentieth century.
8Segna se le frasi sono vere (T) o false (F).
The Chronicles of Narnia film came out
in 2005. The director, Adam Adamson,
made this film in his native New Zealand.
CS Lewis didn’t want films made of his
books, because the technology at that time
wasn’t very advanced. Now we can create
special effects with computers.

I’m doing my English homework. I’m
learning about the life of a famous
writer, JRR Tolkien. He lived in Oxford.
Today, we’re visiting some of the
important places in his life.
Hi.
Hi ya.
How are things?
Good. I went on the Internet last night.
There was a lot of information about
Tolkien. I’ve got a map of interesting
places to visit.
OK. But, what are we doing here?
Wait a minute.
So, why is JRR Tolkien famous?
Tolkien wrote the original Lord of the
Rings books. In 1999 the director, Peter
Jackson, made three films of his stories.
Really? I saw this one at the cinema. It
was really long. I didn’t see those.
I’m not really into fantasy films.
They’re great films. I love them. And the
books are good too. Look!
So. Was Tolkien born in Oxford?
No, he wasn’t. He was born in South
Africa on the third of January 1892.
When did he come to Britain?
He came to Britain when he was four.
But he didn’t live in Oxford. Come on!
Tolkien arrived in Oxford when
he was 19 years old. He lived here.
Becky Did he live in a shop?
Alex
No, of course not! This wasn’t a shop in
1911. There was a house here.
Becky Oh, right.
Alex
He studied at the University.
Becky Was he a good student?
Alex
He was a very good student. He loved
studying languages and writing.
Alex
After he finished university, Tolkien
worked for the Oxford English
Dictionary for two years.
Becky Was he married?
Alex
Yes, he was, and he had four children.
Becky Where did they live?
Alex
Well, for five years they didn’t live in
Oxford. They lived in the city
of Leeds, in the north of England.

Phew! Did Tolkien write a lot of stories?
Yes, he did. He wrote fantasy stories and
invented new languages. In his fantasy
world there were strange characters and
scary animals.
Tolkien had a lot of friends in Oxford.
They were writers, too. They met here at
the Eagle and Child. They talked about
their work and read stories.
Were his stories popular?
They were very popular. People around
the world bought his books. But he
didn’t like being famous.
Really? That’s strange.
Yeah. Now, one more place to visit.
Tolkien’s wife died in 1971 and two years
later Tolkien died. A lot of people were
very sad.
But now you can watch the films and
read Tolkien’s books. So, millions of
people know his stories. That’s cool.
