Company of Piombino) are proud to invite all LEN member federations to participate to the
next LEN European Junior Open Water Championships which will take place 9 • 11 September

The FIN (Italian Swimming Federation) with the Open Water Sector, and all the technical facilities
activated.
The town of Piombino with the Department of Sport and all the technical facilities activated with the
help of Police and the Departments of Tourism - Productive Activities and Public Works.

The Race Village is set up in piazza Bovio with prefabricated structures

Piombino and its Sea
An indissoluble bond
Piombino, a small purely industrial town until recent times, is diversifying its economy for a better
maintenance of the land and of the environment. To learn more about the town, it is necessary to
understand the close relationship between the town with its territory and the sea. This is underlined
by the old town overlooking Piazza Bovio, from which a view of crystal blue waters, the Canal of
Piombino, opens until Elba island and the little islands of the archipelago, bordering the horizon and
hugging the coast from the town center to the Gulf of Baratti (nominated by the Municipality of Piombino, for the inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list). Everything through a pristine landscape
of fragrant mediterranean wood and a series of coves and beaches hidden between the rocks.
Towards the East, however, the view is lost in the other beautiful beaches that since 2008, have
achieved recognition by the FEE Blue Flag.
There are many reminders of its illustrious past with Appiani family (who called at their court artists
Napoleon·s sister, Elisa Bonaparte, who gave the town a period of great splendor (enough to merit
Kingdom of Italy. To learn more about this town, walk down the old town, starting with the oldest
monument (built in 1212), the “Torrione” with its “Rivellino”, the only evidence remained of the communal age.

Then, crossing Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, we arrive at the Town Hall, (www.comune.piombino.
it), a twentieth-century restoration of the ancient “Palazzo dei Priori” that preserves its grandeur,
turismopiombino.it). Here we are at the “Castle”, a beautiful Medicean fortress built between the
thirteenth and the nineteenth century, restored in 2001, to host the “Museo del Castello e della Città” (“Castle and town Museum”), which tells its story through a didactic way. In the old stables and
accommodation of the Court of Appiani, was opened, also in 2001, the “Archaeological Museum
of Populonia” (the only Etruscan city born near the sea), where are preserved more than 2,000
man settlements in the territory, from prehistory to the Etruscan period to the late-antique Roman.

VAL DI CORNIA - Tuscany Etruscan Coast
A fascinating effect of light and colours
The Val di Cornia area is located in the upper Maremma, south of Livorno province and covers an
area of approximately 460 square miles, which has not undergone real changes. It came down
to us intact, so that it has often been called “Gardens of Tuscany” for its fertile plains, its pleasant
hills, and the presence of a clean sea. It includes: Piombino, the ancient capital of the ancient Principality, situated on a promontory stretching directly to the sea with its piazza Bovio, and bound
strongly to the history of the Etruscans. San Vincenzo, a modern sea resort, Campiglia Marittima,
Suvereto (Orange Flag TCI) and Sassetta, ancient medieval villages placed on the hills, offering

The plain extends from the Colline Metallifere
(Metalliferous Hills) to the coast, from San Vincenzo to Vignale-Riotorto. This landscape is the
result of a synergy between man and nature,
as the recent drainage works have favoured
the development of both urban and agricultural
exploitation. The spontaneous vegetation cover is very low here, and gave way to pastures
and crops, including the predominating arable
crops, and particularly cereals, and vegetables
(artichokes, spinaches, tomatoes and melons).
Everything is framed by the sea, whose waters
are crystal clear and largely unspoiled, and offer beautiful shades of colours, from emerald
green to deep blue. With the exception of the
section corresponding to the promontory of
Piombino, high and rocky, the coast is mainly
characterized by the presence of long stretches
to the action of waves and sea currents. The
vegetation of the rocky coast is that of the typical Mediterranean scrub, well adapted to the
climate of the coast, especially to the heat and
aridity of summer. The coastal bands, more or
less extensive, are wider at the outlet areas of
the rivers and are surrounded by beautiful pine
forests, introduced by man as a defense from
the strong westerly winds, high in salt, alternating with thick woods of fragrant Mediterranean
vegetation.

TOURIST RESORT “ORIZZONTE”
(Accommodation of the National teams)
The tourist resort “Orizzonte”, an excellence of Val di Cornia and Piombino east coast,
is an accommodation open all year round , include a huge area (100.000 mq) with
buildings, lots of green spaces, parking and sports equipments.
In this natural oasis, there are 200 two-room apartments ( made with typical tuscan
architecture), a restaurant, a hash house, a market and a café. For guest
entertainment, there are three pools (two of them 25 x 12,5 metres) a recreation area,
two tennis court and two beach volley fields
