Abstract
Wireless transmission of cortical signals is an essential step to improve the safety and diagnostic gain of procedures requiring invasive localization of
seizure foci and to provide chronic recording of brain activity for Brain Computer Interface (BCI) applications. The combination of wireless cable-free
ECoG and external seamless battery recharge solve the problems and shortcomings caused by the presence of cables leaving the skull, providing a
safer and easier way to monitor patients and to perform ECoG recording . Excellent signal quality and low impendances have been observed for the
entire time of implantation (30 weeks) on non-human primates making feasible the chronic implantation of similar devices in patients . This novel
wireless externally rechargeable neuroprosthesis holds great promise for experimental and clinical application concerning epi lepsy and BCI,
revolutionizing the modalities to perform brain mapping. Dynamic brain mapping through ECoG recording an d stimulation can be performed now,
offering a thoroughly new window on the localisation and assessment of brain functions. A further step to diagnose and cure n eurological disorders
is offered by synchrotron radiation. The largest and most powerful synchrotron in the world is located in Grenoble (European Synchrotron Radiation
Facility,ESRF) and performs experiments dedicated to micro imaging and microradiosurgery. The highly collimated synchrotron b eams allow to view
the cell structure non invasively and to ablate selected brain structures at a cellular level, opening novel and fashinating opportunities for brain imaging
and therapy.
Dr. Pantaleo Romanelli Romanelli is the Scientific Director of AB Medica, Milano, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Scientific Director for Brain Radiosurgery, Cyberknife Center, CDI, Milano and
Scientist at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, France. He was Consulting Professor at the Dept of Neurosurgery, Stanford University (2008-2009), Scientist at Brookhaven
National Laboratory, Upton, NY (2005-2007), Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Neurology, Stony Brook University, USA (2005-2007) and Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Neurosurgery, Stanford
University, USA (2003-2005). Dr. Romanelli received many scientific awards, and between them Dean’s Fellowship of the Stanford University, USA, 2001, Intracranial Award, Cyberknife Society,USA,
