1 H.P. Lovecraft (edited by E.F. Lovecraft stava lentamente guadagnando successo come scrittore. Molti dei suoi primi racconti come The Doom That Came to Sarnath (1919), The White Ship (1919), The Cats of Ulthar (1920), Celephaïs (1920), The Quest of Iranon (1921), The Tree (1921) e The Other Gods (1921) sono chiaramente ispirate a Dunsany, così come altre storie scritte 14 Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), nato Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, diciottesimo barone di Dunsany, era uno scrittore di fantasy irlandese. 28 negli anni seguenti come The Silver Key (1926) e The Strange High House in the Mist (1926). In Some Notes on a Nonentity (1933), Lovecraft afferma di aver avuto l’idea per un pantheon e una mitologia artificiale rappresentati da “Cthulhu”, “Yog-Sothoth”, “Yuggoth” e altri da Dunsany, che nei suoi racconti The Gods of Pegāna e Time and the Gods scrisse di un pantheon nel reame immaginario di Pegāna. Dunsany è inoltre discusso in Supernatural Horror in Literature (1927)15. The White People, contenuto nella raccolta The House of Souls (1906), è considerato da Lovecraft come il secondo miglior racconto della letteratura fantastica. The Whisperer in the Darkness. É noto per lavori come Watchmen, V for Vendetta e From Hell. Seven is their number. Bred in the depths of ocean, neither male nor female are they. They are as the howling wind, which knoweth not mercy, which knoweth not pity. Heedless are they to pray and supplication. They are the serpent. They are the furious beast. The windstorm. Evil winds they are. The evil breath that heraldeth the baneful storm. They are mighty children.” “Incatenati nel firmamento. Sette in numero. The Call of Cthulhu: “The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.” Alone in the Dark rientra in questa categoria. Lovecraft II. La frase riportata è la seguente: “That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.” “That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.” - H.P Lovecraft “Not dead which eternal lie stranger eons death may die.” Semplicemente esistono, così come qualunque altra creatura. Cthulhu è un Grande Antico, e l’antagonista principale del racconto The Call of Cthulhu. 76 English Section 77 INTRODUCTION “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” - H.P. Lovecraft A nd the biggest unknown we are at least vaguely aware of is the cosmos. A cosmos that Lovecraft litters with unfathomable, terrifying and uncaring creatures. But the real terror comes from those unsettling hints, those footprints that these entities leave as bait throughout our unsuspecting world. Those dismaying iceberg tips that suggest limitless bodies, impossible geometries and omniscient consciousness hidden behind the flimsiest veil. This is what really scares, this ignorance, this upheaval of those basest laws of nature hardwired in human beings’ minds that awakens the primal fear: fear of the unknown, and more exactly, awareness of the profound and inescapable indifference that the universe we inhabit is permeated with. This reflects the all too real indifference that everyone deals with on a daily basis in their lives. An indifference that Lovecraft has known all too well, and that he has also dealt other than received. Isolation was indeed one of the formative elements of his literary career. 78 Lovecraft is considered by many to be the father to weird, horror and fantastic literature in the twentieth century, and his influence is well recognizable to this day. Stephen King, John Carpenter, Guillermo del Toro, Mike Mignola and many others owe much of their success to Lovecraft in one way or another, tapping at his vast legacy for the design of their most iconic creatures, and the mythology he created for his works is being widened and continued to this day by many a writer. He influenced a wide array of medias, from literature to filmmaking, from music to art, from videogames to comic books, and each of these works is surprisingly faithful to the writer’s own work, to the point where many of these are actually considered parts of lovecraftian canon. This thesis will touch on each aspect of Lovecraft’s life, focusing on the events that shaped his career and influenced his vision of the world. It will talk about his works and the most faithful among those inspired by him, analysing the central themes of his work and the influence he had on modern culture. 79 CHAPTER I: MY PROVIDENCE 1.1 194 Angell Street Howard Philip Lovecraft was born at 194 Angell Street, Providence, Rhode Island, August 20, 1890. His father, Winfield Scott Lovecraft was of British lineage, while his mother, Sarah Susan Phillips, came from a well-off Providence family. Lovecraft’s father impressed upon young Howard the importance of his bloodline, while his mother, who secretly wished for a girl, dressed him in dresses and forced him in long hairs until he was six years of age, when he demanded they were cut. His father died on July 19, 1898, after some form of syphilis. Following this event, Howard moved in with his aunts, Lillian Delora Phillips and Annie Emeline Phillips, his grandmother, Rhobinia Alzada Phillips, his grandfather, Whipple Van Buren Phillips, and of course his mother, a woman whose nervousness and hysteria were aggravated by her husband’s passing, to the point where she would keep her child close to her side with the excuse that he was too ugly to play with other children. His grandfather, however, was an avid reader, and an aficionado of the gothic genre, a passion he transmitted to young Howard, who took to it all too easily. He introduced his grandson to English classics and poetry, 80 along with other books like the Grimm brothers’ works, the Arabian Nights, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Lovecraft showed early signs of genius, writing his first work of fantastic literature, The Noble Eavesdropper, in 1896. When he was eight he approached chemistry and astronomy, the latter thanks to his grandmother. His first article on the subject was published in 1906 on the Providence Sunday Journal, and between 1899 and 1907 he created two magazines that he distributed among his schoolmates, and which he kept writing for several years. He was an accomplished autodidact, and partially had to be, in part because of his mother’s clinginess and in part because of his sickly health, both physical and mental. The boy suffered from severe nervous breakdowns probably caused by the numerous losses he experienced, like his grandmother’s in 1896, his father’s in 1898 and his grandfather’s in 1904. His grandmother’s death in particular plagued Lovecraft’s dreams with monstrous creatures he dubbed Night-Gaunts, while his grandfather’s death brought about a severe financial crisis that forced him and his mother to move in a smaller place at 598 Angell Street. 1.2 598 Angell Street With the change of venue Lovecraft was overcome by a profound depression, mainly caused by the disappearance of his grandfather’s book 81 collection, which represented a safe haven for him for many years. This state of mind brought about more nervous breakdowns which forced him to abandon school altogether before being able to finish high school. S.T. Joshi suggests, in his book, that one of the causes of these incidents was his difficulty with math, a subject he would have to master in order to follow his passion for astronomy. This perceived failure shadowed him his whole life, even though he was, in retrospective, one of the most accomplished autodidacts of his century. 1.3 Seclusion From 1908 to 1913, following his nervous breakdown, Lovecraft became a hermit, only reappearing on the public scene in 1913, thanks to his passion for journalism and publishing. 1.4 UAPA, NAPA and Weird Tales In 1913 Lovecraft wrote a letter, in verses, to the pulp magazine The Argosy, criticizing the overly maudlin stories of one Fred Jackson, and the following discussion, which took place entirely on The Argosy’s letter column, drew the attention of Edward F. Dass, president of the United Amateur Press Association, a group of amateur independent writers from all around the country. Daas invited Lovecraft to join, and he agreed in 82 early 1914. He published, with UAPA, thirteen numbers of his journal The Conservative (1915-1923), which makes clear Lovecraft’s early racism and xenophobia, a characteristic which earned him a great deal of hate in modern times, to the point where many avoid his works altogether because of it. And a shame it is, not only because his opinions do not reflect in most of his works, but mainly because he would later come to regret some of those very opinions, coming to a more moderate view of the world, especially for those times. If we were all to be judged for the opinions we held in our youth this would be a sad world indeed. Lovecraft would go on to become chief editor and president of UAPA, as well as, for a short time, president of the rival National Amateur Press Association. This comeback to writing convinced Lovecraft to also bring back his passion for weird fiction. In his teenage years he had written numerous stories, among which The Beast in the Cave (1905) and The Alchemist (1908), but he had put the genre aside in the years following his breakdown. Between 1910 and 1920, after advice from several friends of his from UAPA, like W. Paul Cook, Lovecraft started writing weird fiction again, bringing to completion two stories in 1917, The Tomb and Dagon. These two stories marked the beginning of Lovecraft’s literary career as a writer and as undisputed master of the genre. From 1917 83 onwards Lovecraft would keep writing and publishing weird fiction on a number of pulp magazines, most relevant among which was Weird Tales. 1.5 Mother’s death and life in New York Lovecraft’s mother suddenly passed away May the 24th 1921, after a botched gallbladder surgery. While initially shocked, Lovecraft would later admit to a feeling of relief after his mother’s passing. His story The Thing on the Doorstep (1933) recounts the story of a young boy, Edward Derby, severely restrained by his parents. When he is grown, his mother dies, and Edward admits to feeling “enthusiast, as if freed from invisible shackles.” July the 4th 1921 Lovecraft took part in an amateur journalism conference in Boston, where he met Sonia Heft Greene, a woman seven years his elder, who owned a hat shop and dabbled in weird fiction writing from time to time. The two grew closer until they married in 1924. Afterwards, Lovecraft would move in with Sonia in her Brooklyn apartment, but things were not destined to go smoothly. Sonia’s shop bankrupted as her health started to give way, forcing Lovecraft to unsuccessfully look for other jobs to maintain them. In January 1925 Sonia moved to Cleveland after a job, and Lovecraft had to move in a smaller apartment in Red Hook, a seedy part of Brooklyn. 84 His stories from that period reflect his growing anxiety and xenophobia, and his inability to come to terms with New York’s increasingly foreign population, going from nostalgic (The Shunned House, 1924), to grim and misanthropic (The Horror at Red Hook and He, both from 1924, are clear statements of his opinion regarding New York). In 1926 Lovecraft goes back to Providence, but without Sonia. 1.6 Life in Providence His return to Providence marked the beginning of marital problems which resulted in a divorce, but also the beginning of his most prolific period as a writer of weird fiction. From these years are his most famous works like The Call of Cthulhu in 1926, The Dunwich Horror in 1928 and At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow over Innsmouth in 1931. These stories are the very heart of Lovecraft’s horror literature, and they are, to this day, milestones of the genre. During these years Lovecraft’s political views shifted, as the Great Depression brought him to embrace Roosevelt and become a moderate socialist. 85 1.7 Last years and death Lovecraft last years were not easy. In 1932 he lost his aunt, Mrs. Clark, and moved to 66 College Street with his other aunt, Mrs. Gamwell, in 1933. In 1936 the suicide of a dear friend of his, Robert E. Howard, shook him profoundly. To add to this, his refusal to have his worsening intestine cancer looked at caused him many agonizing winters, until the illness finally overtook him March 15th 1937. He was buried in Swan Point Cemetery, in the family plot. His headstone stayed unmarked, until a group of fans in 1977 paid to have it show the author’s date of birth and death, as well as the phrase: “I am Providence”. In 1939 some of his closest friends gathered most of his weird fiction into a single collection, The Outsider and Others. 86 CHAPTER II: INFLUENCES AND STYLE 2.1 Influences and style The crescendo of anxiety and terror that is so characteristic of Lovecraft’s works is, in part, a result of the nightmares that plagued him as a child, nightmares that Lovecraft managed to skilfully transpose to paper, through a deeply gothic language and a style focused on atmosphere, more than action or particularly inventive plot twists. That having been said, his style has of course been influenced by an array of authors, first among which was probably Edgar Allan Poe, whom he considered an innovator of the gothic genre, capable of laying bare man’s primal psychological fears, as Lovecraft himself states in the chapter dedicated to Poe in his book Supernatural Horror in Literature. Both authors employed British English, wrote tales far from the literary trends of the times, and created unique and weird worlds using stylistic archaisms. Poe’s influence on Lovecraft is evident from the latter’s works, as for example in The Shadow over Innsmouth, where many expressions are easily recognizable as similar to expressions Poe used in his poem Nemesis. The two also shared some personal details: the loss of their father in their youth and their love for poetry. 87 Lovecraft’s more dreamlike themes, on the other hand, as well as the use of a recurring pantheon, are the result of his appreciation of the works of Lord Dunsany. Lovecraft came to know his works in 1919, with A Dreamer’s Rest, after some friends recommended it to him. Many of his early works, like The Doom The Came to Sarnath (1919), The White Ship (1919), The Cats of Ulthar (1920), Celephaïs (1920), The Quest of Iranon (1921), The Tree (1921) and The Other Gods (1921) are clearly inspired by Dunsany, as well as some later ones like The Silver Key (1926) and The Strange House in the Mist (1926). Arthur Machen was another great influence for Lovecraft, and the themes of ancient and evil entities surviving to modern times, as well as those of mysteries in our everyday world, are retraceable to him. Regardless, Lovecraft and Machen were very different from each other; Machen was an Anglo-Catholic and a mystic, distrustful of science and its growing role in the society of the time. Lovecraft’s Dunwich Horror adopts Machen’s The Great God Pan’s central theme of a god impregnating a woman; while the story for Cool Air is partially from the Novel of the White Powder, by Lovecraft’s own admission. Even The Call of Cthulhu and The Whisperer in the Darkness owe something to the Novel of the Black Seal, which approaches horror from a documentary- 88 like point of view. The White People is considered by Lovecraft to be the second best story in all of weird fiction. Scientific progresses in astronomy, biology, geology and physics were just as important an influence, instilling in Lovecraft the idea that the human race was infinitely small and insignificant. This materialistic vision of the universe would be defined as cosmicism, and would have found its peak in the creation of the Cthulhu Mythos, a pantheon of alien and extradimensional creatures around whom many of his stories take place. Other authors like Algernon Blackwood, Oswald Spengler and Robert W. Chambers played their role in shaping Lovecraft into the master of horror and weird fiction he is considered today. 2.2 Influences on culture Lovecraft did not only influence authors from his own genre, but instead whole generations who used his atmospheres, settings and creatures as models for their own works. 2.2.1 Influences on cinema Although Lovecraft did not appreciate the encroaching world of cinematography, he nonetheless came to inspire numerous filmmakers 89 who would pay their homage to the master of horror in many different ways, and to many different degrees of success. Among them the most recognizable are John Carpenter, Guillermo del Toro, Uwe Boll and many others, who did not simply adapt Lovecraft’s works to the big screen, but who created unique and original screenplays tapping the vast wealth of settings, atmospheres and creatures Lovecraft left them. Sam Raimi, for example, borrowed from the Necronomicon to create his most famous trilogy, Evil Dead. The events of the films in fact are jumpstarted by the discovery of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, a pseudobiblion created by Raimi, and clearly inspired by the lovecraftian original. Stuart Gordon was captivated by Lovecraft as well, to the point where he transposed some of Lovecraft’s most terrifying and creepy creatures on the big screen, but with a touch of comedy and splatter which lent to the films a unique aspect. This is particularly evident in ReAnimator, from 1985. Together with John Carpenter and Guillermo del Toro he took part in directing the American miniseries Masters of Horror, contributing a short film by the name of H.P. Lovecraft’s Dreams in the Witch House. 90 John Carpenter reiterated repeatedly that he had been profoundly influenced by Lovecraft in his filmmaking, particularly with the Apocalypse Trilogy, composed by The Thing (1982), The Prince of Darkness (1987) and In The Mouth of Madness (1995), in which he managed to recreate those paranoid, dismaying and terrifying atmospheres Lovecraft loved so much. In several interviews Guillermo del Toro also admitted to how much he owed Lovecraft for his own works, starting with his adaptation of Hellboy, a comic book written and illustrated by Mike Mignola, in which he tried to faithfully recreate the settings and the characters, deeply inspired by Lovecraft. Another example is Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), where many characters are of clear Lovecraftian origin. The Italian scene sees instead the works of Lucio Fulci as the greatest homage to Lovecraft. In the 80s Fulci borrowed from the author for some of his most famous films, like The Beyond (1981), which makes mention of the book of Eibon, and City of the Living dead (1980), which borrowed from The Dunwich Horror. 91 2.2.2 Influences on comic books Lovecraft had an enormous influence on the world of comic books as well. In issue 18 of the Italian comic book Dylan Dog, titled Cagliostro!, the protagonist of the series meets the man himself, during one of his cases, who offers himself to one of his monsters. Beyond this one issue, Dylan Dog is filled with references to Lovecraft’s lifework, like in the special issue Mefistofele, or in the short story La Cantina (The Cellar), where several lovecraftian monsters appear. Alan Moore is another author who considers Lovecraft one of his biggest influences, as evidenced by the British comic book writer’s predilection for the occult. In his Necronomicon (2010), Moore expands on many of the euphemisms used by the sexually shy Lovecraft. It is the story of two FBI agents coming in contact with a cult in New England, The Esoteric Order of Dagon, and the consequences are cringe worthy indeed. Another example of lovecraftian influences in comic books is Batman, with the three issue series The Doom That Came to Gotham, where the Dark Knight has to face creatures out of Lovecraft’s worst nightmare. This comic book is memorable for the participation, as comic book artist, of Mike Mignola, one of the most accomplished Lovecraftinspired illustrators. 92 Mike Mignola wrote and illustrated Hellboy, the comic book from which del Toro drew inspiration for his movie. His unique style is perfect to illustrate Lovecraft’s shadows and doubts, metaphorical and non. Hellboy, and by extension Mignola, embraces the gothic just like Lovecraft initially did, describing a world at the mercy of supernatural powers connected to worlds beyond our own, connected to unfathomable entities who are a constant threat, exerting their influence on our world through cults, artefacts and ancient prophecies, and whom are never directly fought and defeated. Hellboy is to this day one of the most faithful homage to Lovecraft without directly borrowing from him, and the fact that this is recognizable with one look at Mignola’s tables is a clear statement to the illustrator’s skill. 2.2.3 Influences on videogames and board games Videogames have always been particularly adept at recreating Lovecraft’s atmospheres and characteristic sense of anxiety and anguish, as a videogame puts the player in the midst of the action, in a role where his choices matter, where he is a protagonist and not a spectator. This having been said, failures still trump successes by a large margin, as too faithful a game can result boring and slow, lacking any 93 action, while a game that is instead too focused on the action can miss the mark entirely, bringing the attention away from the settings and atmospheres, not considering that Lovecraft’s works are all about humanity being unable to fight back, not unlike an ant would be unable to fight back a flood. The genre of survival horror, on paper, would look like the best chance to correctly and faithfully transpose Lovecraft’s philosophy to the screen, but in reality, especially in recent times, the genre has become saturated with action games passed as survival horrors through the use of jump scares, gore and violence. This having been said, exceptions luckily exist, for example “Alone in the Dark”. The game, published in 1992 for PC by Infogames, was the first survival horror in 3D ever published, and gave way to a whole series of sequels that sadly missed the mark, as well as to a couple of movies. The game is set in 1920’s Louisiana, where the protagonist, a private detective, is trapped in a mansion that he’s trying to escape from. The setting, as well as the character’s job, is a clear reminder of Lovecraft’s novels, and the gameplay brings about even more similarities. Enemies are rarely physically killed, but are escaped or defeated through wit and puzzles. The game rotates around the collection of clues and the solving of enigmas. 94 Having said this, it may look like this niche genre is the only shot at bringing to the videogame world what Lovecraft was about, but luckily some hybrids succeeded where many others failed. One of these games is Alan Wake, published by Remedy Entertainment for Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows in 2010. The game is built around a small town in the northern United States, Bright Falls, clearly inspired by Twin Peaks, a town from the TV series from the same name. The protagonist is a bestselling writer of noir crime stories, suffering from a severe writer’s block that is keeping him from writing a single page. Trying to find release from the stress of New York and of his agent, he decides to take a vacation together with his wife to a little town in the state of Washington. What follows is a waking nightmare right out of the pages of a book he has not wrote just yet, the events of which are coming to reality thanks to the influence of an ancient entity imprisoned on the bottom of the local lake, who is trying to escape through the words of the writer. And yet, the game which may represent the best success at transposing Lovecraft’s mythology and philosophy comes from another genre, that of the action role playing. Bloodborne. Bloodborne is a videogame developed by FromSoftware and published in 2015 by Sony Computer Entertainment for PS4. 95 In Bloodborne, the player controls a hunter of beasts in the gothic city of Yharnam, whose inhabitants are suffering from a blood-borne curse, causing their transformation in creatures similar to werewolves. The whole atmosphere of the game and the breath-taking art direction do most of the work in transposing the sense of anxiety so characteristic of the author from Providence. The moon, constant companion of the adventurer, marks the passing of time, and the descent of the hunter in his nightmare. The hunter’s adventures will bring him to suspect that a bigger truth than a simple curse is hiding behind the city’s problems, and the key seems to be a forlorn college hidden on the shores of a lake, where years ago some scholars trying to discern a more complete understanding of the cosmos and of humanity’s place therein brought out a truth that ought to have remained hidden. Here is where the fist similarities with the work, or at least the philosophy of Lovecraft first emerge. Human curiosity, specifically humans’ thirst for knowledge, ends up drawing the attention of beings infinitely higher up on the cosmic food chain. At Byrgenwerth College the hunter first encounters creatures deeply reminiscent of Lovecraft’s works, as well as the first mentions of Great Ones, beings who exist on another plane. Another Lovecraftian theme 96 faced in the game is the presence of a deeper truth hidden behind a veil that can be easily torn asunder through rituals, artefact or forbidden knowledge. By diving in a lake reflecting the full moon and somehow ending on the moon’s very surface, the hunter is forced to fight a grotesque spider that, when killed, leaves in its place a pregnant woman bleeding at the womb and with her face veiled. The desperate bawl of an infant is heard, the woman disappears and the moon turns a deep blood red. And that is how it will remain until the hunter manages to reach the nursery of the child, born of a forbidden union between a Great One and a woman, and put an end to its unholy existence. But not before facing creatures worthy of Lovecraft’s worst nightmares, and discovering hints of secrets and forbidden knowledge that are never explicitly explained, but always only hinted at, a perfect representation of Lovecraft’s own style. At the end of the game, the player can choose how the story ends. Either die, and reawaken in a freed Yharnam, finally seeing the dawn, or through gruesome acts and exploration throughout the adventure, ascend to a Great One, a slug no bigger than an arm, but nonetheless finally capable of understanding the cosmos, on a whole new plane of existence. Lovecraft exerted his influence on the world of board and roleplaying games as well. Many Dungeons & Dragons adventures would have never 97 been born form the fans’ minds if he hadn’t existed, but that’s not where his legacy ends. In fact, many games were born exclusively to transpose Lovecraft’s mythology to this particular kind of entertainment, and Arkham Horror is certainly one of the best. In Arkham Horror the players take on the role of people from all walks of life, who ended up in Arkham in one way or the other just as a siege of cosmic scale was taking place. The players have to find artefacts, weapons, disrupt rituals and close portals in an attempt to slow the tide of monsters, lest the Old God mounting the siege manifest in our world. The game is extremely complicated and extremely long, taking a minimum of 4 hours to complete for experienced players, and closer to 7 hours for everyone else. 2.2.4 Influences on music Lovecraftian influences are strongly felt in the music world as well. Many bands owe at least some of their songs to the author, others even whole albums, while others still named their bands in his honour. One of these are the H.P. Lovecraft, a psychedelic rock band formed in 1967 in Chicago. Their music was strictly built around haunting atmospheres clearly inspired by the author’s work. Their debut album, titled H.P. Lovecraft came out the same year the band was born, and was followed 98 by H.P. Lovecraft II. The band only lasted 2 years, but had great success nonetheless. So much so that in 1988 a compilation came out with their greatest hits titled At The Mountains of Madness, after the tale by the same name. The musical genre which borrowed the most from Lovecraft’s works is undoubtedly metal, and all its branches like extreme metal and gothic metal. Iron Maiden, with their first live album, Live After Death in 1985, openly borrowed from the author. Even the album’s cover has the band’s mascot, Eddie, rising from its grave bearing an inscription taken from Lovecraft’s works, from The Nameless City (1921): “That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.” Even the historic group Metallica borrowed from Lovecraft, and this is most clear in their 1984 album called Ride the Lightning, where they inserted an instrumental track called The Call of Ktulu, entirely inspired by the atmospheres and feelings conjured by Lovecraft’s tale The Call of Cthulhu. The sentence used for their album’s cover is also present in their song The Thing That Should Not Be from their 1986 album Master of Puppets. 99 “That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.” - H. P. Lovecraft “Not dead which eternal lie stranger eons death may die.” - Metallica The song’s lyrics are a mix of ideas partly inspired by The Nameless City and partly by The Shadow Over Inssmouth, which come together to form a song that perfectly represents the author’s ideas. All Nightmare Long is another song which heavily borrows from Lovecraft, and which hints at Tindalos, creatures part of Cthulhu Mythos, born from the mind of Frank Belknap Long for Lovecraft’s use. The single, accompanied by a brilliant video, brings us into a post apocalyptic world were cells exists that if implanted in bodies allow their reanimation. This reanimated bodies eventually show signs of uncontrollable violence and the soviets resort to bombarding America to save the rest of the world. Other groups influenced by the author are Bal-Sagoth, Marduk, Mercyful Fate, Nox Arcana and Black Sabbath. 100 2.2.5 Influences on the art world Lovecraft’s influence on the art world contributed to the creation of a movement in the late 70s in Los Angeles: the Lowbrow Art, also known as Pop Surrealism. This style is very particular in that it utilizes, apart from painting, also sculpting and digital art. These works of art often have figurative subjects, with strong caricatural characteristics to give that supernatural touch that this kind of art needs, other than many decorative details. As far as the use of colour goes, there is a prevalence of strong, clear colours. One of the major artists in this field is Colin Christian, who often utilizes subjects straight from Lovecraft’s works. 2.2.6 Influences on literature Many authors celebrated and were inspired by Lovecraft, and among them some giants of modern horror literature like Stephen King, who repeated more than once how much he owed to the author. In his latest masterpiece, Revival, King was very direct with his intentions: To create a “balls-to-the-wall” horror story, like he hadn’t done in years, adding some elements from Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Myhtos but looked at from a new angle. The lovecraftian influences are present and 101 clearly identifiable throughout the book, especially in the end, where the story and the horror components reach their climax. Other works from the author like Crouch and N are wonderful homages to Lovecraft, filled with all the typical elements both authors love. King always sought to do something more than, so to speak, copying Lovecraft, instead paying homage to the author by doing something different without taking away the raw horror always present in Lovecraft, by explaining in every detail that which Lovecraft would leave shrouded in mystery and up to the reader to decide. 102 CAPITOLO III: LOVECRAFT’S MYTHOLOGY 3.1 The Pantheon The group of supernatural creatures created by Lovecraft is often referred to as a Pantheon, a definition that no doubt is fruit of Lovecraft’s many influences by Lord Dunsany, but the “gods” in this Pantheon do not occupy places or preside over realms like the Pantheons we’re more familiar with. They simply are, not unlike us. Although these creatures are never properly “explained” in Lovecraft’s works, but mainly just referred to, together with their confusing titles (Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young, for example), in the years, thanks to the combined efforts of many different authors contributing to the Cthulhu Mythos, a clearer taxonomy has arisen around these creatures. 3.1.1 Outer Gods The Outer Gods are the most powerful creatures in Lovecraft’s cosmos, and are the best testimony to humankind’s insignificance on the cosmic food chain. These creatures exist in different points of the cosmos, but also outside of it. In other words, they are extra dimensional beings, that is to say they exist on another dimension than ours. 103 First among them is Azathoth, also known as the Demon Sultan and the Nuclear Chaos. He is the most powerful of the Outer Gods, and is referred to as “that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the centre of all infinity”. He is surrounded by his court of other Outer Gods who dance and play instruments to keep him asleep, lest he awake and destroy the world he dreamed into existence. The Outer Gods are, in general, fairly passive, despite their enormous power, and act as such: Ghroth, for example, is an Outer God that looks like a gigantic moon with a cyclopean eye, and his presence reawakens Great Old Ones. Ubbo-Sathla is the source of all biological life on Earth, while Abhoth is the source of all that is corrupt and impure. The Outer Gods exert their direct influence only through Nyarlathotep, the spawn of Azathoth and vessel on Earth for the Gods. He is capable of mingling among humans and speaking their tongue, and is in contact with every cult linked with the Gods. 3.1.2 The Great Old Ones The Great Old Ones are gods in the most familiar sense of the world. They are present on Earth and though they posses many extra-terrestrial characteristics they are mostly organisms like ours, if bigger. 104 Cthulhu is a Great Old One, and is the main antagonist in the story The Call of Cthulhu. The Great Old Ones are the embodiment, together with the Outer Gods, of Lovecraft’s cherished cosmic indifference, and generally tend to their own business amidst the ruins of civilizations of yore until disturbed or aroused from their slumbers by some event. 3.2 The Servant Races Although Outer Gods and Great Old Ones have always been worshipped by humans, almost all of them have supernatural races serving them and worshipping them in every aspect. One example are the Deep Ones, worshippers of Dagon, introduced in the short story by the same name; or the Youngs spawned by Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Woods. These races are the bulk of the Outer Gods’ and Great Old Ones’ presence on Earth and are also, on an evolutionary standpoint, the missing link between humans and Great Ones. The bestiary of the Cthulhu Mythos does a great job of indicating the Great Old Ones approximate position on Earth based on the appearance and location of their servant races. 105 CONCLUSION As far as my opinion goes, a lifetime wouldn’t be enough to properly illustrate how far Lovecraft’s influences in modern culture actually stretch, effectively making him one of the most relevant authors of the 20th century. One of those very rare authors who actually did survive their times, and who are still so present today. As I have tried to show in this paper, many videogames, books, TV series, movies and many other things have been influenced by what he created, even the world of art, which gave light to completely new currents employing the author’s grim and dark themes, like the Lowbrow art. As what Lovecraft created is effectively always ongoing, every day hundreds of people and companies give birth to something new inspired by his works. More than a company has found its initial success thanks to a lucky idea for a product inspired by his world, and many others go strong to this day thanks to him, like Blizzard or FromSoftware, companies both that borrowed deeply from Lovecraft’s universe, the former with World of Warcraft, and the latter with Dark Souls and Bloodborne. For the writer’s aficionados, which now number amongst the millions, all this will only get better, as his universe is constantly expanded and enriched by many authors, directors and developers. 106 The point of my paper is to get as many people as possible to know this wonderful writer and genius, and to have them understand how sometimes the very people that our society dismisses as controversial, sick, introverted, shy, repressed are those that, in the end, contribute the most to the race’s knowledge. And I ask the question: Is this really because genius has a price, or is that just an excuse on the part of people trying to make those individuals different, aliens, people who refuse to turn inwards for once and maybe give some space to that introversion that may near them to those intellectual peaks so few of us have ever reached, that so little have to do with intelligence quotient and so much with thinking, more than doing? 107 Deutscher Teil 108 EINFÜHRUNG “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” E - H.P. In seinem Buch vermutet S.T. Nahezu alle bekannten Erzählungen wie Cthulhus Ruf (‚The Call of Cthulhu‘, 1926), Grauen von Dunwich (,The Dunwich Horror‘,1928), Berge des Wahnsinns (‚At the Mountains of Madness‘) und Schatten über Innsmouth (‚The Shadow over Innsmouth‘), beide von 1931, stammen aus dieser Zeit. Viele der ersten Kurzgeschichten Lovecrafts wurden von Lord Dunsany inspiriert: Das Verderben, das über Sarnath Kam (‚The Doom That Came to Sarnath‘, 1919), Das Weiße Schiff (‚The White Ship‘, 1919), Die Katzen von Ulthar (‚The Cats of Ulthar‘, 1920), Celephaïs (1920), Iranons Suche (‚The Quest of Iranon‘, 1921), Der Baum (‚The Tree‘, 1921) und Die Anderen Götter (‚The Other Gods‘, 1921). B. Alone in the Dark. Die Grabinschrift zeigt einen Satz von der Geschichte Stadt ohne Namen (The Nameless City, 1921): “That is not dead which can eternal lie, 125 And with strange aeons even death may die.” Das Lied All Nightmare Long basiert auf Tindalos.
