young people from all corners of the world with a common Italian ancestry converged in Rome to take part
in the Prima Conferenza di
Giovani Italian nel Mondo. Of
the 20 young people chosen
to represent Australia, we
speak to one of them, Isabella Restifa, who is also
known as President of the
GSA (Giovani Siciliani
D’Australia), and as a committee member of CAS.
The conference was organized
in order to understand and
prepare for the future of Italian
youth around the world. It is
important for there to be a
connection with Italy and with
other young Italians around
the world in order to keep a
strong sense of culture and
heritage for our future generations.
Isabella, you were recently
part of the Australian contingent at the Prima Conferenza di Giovani Italiani
nel Mondo. Why do you
think this conference was
organized and what were
its aims?
There were 22 countries
present at the conference
and there were 20 Australian delegates chosen to
represent Australia.
How many countries were
represented and how many
Australian delegates were
there?
How were these delegates
chosen?
The delegates were selected by
each Com.It.Es around Australia and then all finalized with the
Italian Ambassador and CGIE
members.
Where was the conference
held?
The conference was held in
Rome at the FAO Centre, this is
the United Nations centre for
Food and Agriculture. It is a
massive complex which is able
to hold large numbers of people
at one time.
How did the conference unfold and what was its structure: were there themes to be
addressed? Group work?

dei quali in gruppo), dal
classico al Jazz dal Tap al
Hip Hop con bravura e maestria. Fra i 300 e più studenti
che a turno si sono esibiti in
base alla loro età e/o grado
di bravura, hanno spiccato
tanti nomi italiani anche nel
“Solo” e “Duo” performance.

Interview with Isabella Restifa
Individual speakers? Guest Speakers?
The first two days were more of a pre-conference of which
the first day delegates were split into Continental groups and
the second day we were split up into themes. The conference officially opened on Wednesday 8th December at the
House of Deputies by the president of House of Deputies
Gianfranco Fini, the President of Italy, Georgio Napolitano
and the President of the Senate, Renato Schifani. The remainder of the conference took place at the FAO where
there were various other official speakers who addressed the
delegates. The 3 days of the conference was both as group
and split into themes so that all delegates could be involved
in more detailed discussion.
What, in general, were the main themes/issues raised
and discussed? Eg, language, culture, identity.
The conference was split into 5 themes: Identity and Multiculturism, Language and Culture, Information and Communication, Work and the world and Representation and Participation.
What would you say was the greatest contribution made
by the Australian contingent?
The Australian delegation prepared a document across these
5 themes prior to the conference which was presented. This
meant that all delegates were able to discuss and greatly
contribute to our reality here in Australia in all areas. I think
we stood out a little as we were not afraid to say what we
thought and we did go there asking for money or other benefits, but we gave strong ideas and proposal as to how the
government can take action on how to move into the future.
As far as other contingents go, what differences did you
notice between them and the Australians? What similarities were there?
Some countries such as USA, Canada, Enlgand, Ireland etc
had very similar ideas as our cultures are quite similar as is
our economic situations. Other countries such as some south
American countries and South Africa had many different and
difficult problems such as work problems, safety issues and
discrimination issues.
How were you received by the Italians, both young and
old?
We were received well by all the people we met. There were
200 young Italians from Italy present at the conference, it
was interesting to hear their thoughts on the reality in Italy
and how they can help us and vice versa.
What do you think was the conference's greatest success?
I think the greatest success of the conference was being able
to express our opinions to various members of the Italian
government first hand. I think its very important for them to
hear our views and also to act on them.

What was the conference’s greatest shortcoming?
The conference had a large number of people, over 600
youth plus CGIE members, parliamentarians, invited guests
etc, therefore it became quite difficult to hear everyone’s
views and opinions.
Was the conference held exclusively in Italian?
Yes the conference was always in the Italian language.
What do you think the Italians learnt from hearing about
the experiences of the delegates?
I think a lot of what they heard they probably already knew
as they do hear what goes on around the world in the Italian
communities, however, I think they
really learnt how much the youth
abroad value their Italian identity
and how strongly we all feel that it
must be continued. I think they also
learnt that we wish to be treated as
first class Italians and not just Italians that left to live somewhere
else.
Where to from here? Plans for
another conference? What do
these conferences achieve in
your opinion?
Shortly all the Australian delegates
will be in contact to debrief from the
conference and see what we can
do on a local level. These conference are important to exchange
ideas and brainstorm with other
youth, they get people motivated to
take the next step and keep going,
I hope that they will have another
conference in the future but nothing
is sure at this stage.
How does a conference like this,
impact the Italian-Australian experience?
I think it impacts on us here by
making us realize how lucky we are
to live in a country that the Italian
culture is embraced and loved, and
that having a culture to call our own
other than Australian really makes
us special and important and we
should always value that.

add or say?
I would like to say thank you to
Comites for Selecting me to attend
this conference, it was a fantastic
experience and I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to get
involved to please do so as our
culture and heritage is too important to lose.

Famiglia Cristiana sul presepe
vivente di Agira

COME QUELLA NOTTE. È stato definito "il
più originale d’Italia". E lo è davvero: pastori
che hanno studiato la zampogna, la filatrice
che fila, la lavandaia che lava, il falegname
che pialla. Un centinaio di figuranti, ma protagonisti sono anche gli spettatori. Tutto
come quella notte, la notte di Natale, quando Maria e Giuseppe vagavano intorno a
Betlemme cercando un alloggio, passavano
al controllo dei soldati romani per il censimento indetto da Cesare Augusto, senza
trovare nemmeno una porta aperta e finendo in una grotta, dove nasceva il Bambino
Gesù, nella mangiatoia. È tutto come allora,
ad Agira, sempre uguale, per iniziativa
dell’associazione "Amici del Presepio" che,
negli ultimi vent’anni, ha organizzato nel
piccolo paese in provincia di Enna un presepe vivente perfetto nei particolari e realistico
nell’emozione.
Controllato fino all’ultimo dettaglio con passione, devozione e teatralità. I pastori lavorano sul serio il latte, che diventa ricotta e
formaggio, la filatrice fila e il falegname pialla e misura. La lavandaia lava con la schiuma, il pastaio e il fabbro, il figulinaio e il mugnaio, l’arrotino, l’incisore, le locandiere che
dicono no a Maria e a Giuseppe, che si affaccia sulla porta con un lume a petrolio. Il
vasaio manipola l’argilla, i due giovani zampognari suonano davvero, perché sono andati a scuola di zampogna a Isernia. Tutti
nelle loro capanne a grandezza reale, con
porte e arredi, capanne costruite lungo il
percorso che sale verso il castello.

Alle 20 si spengono le luci e Maria e Giuseppe iniziano la ricerca dell’alloggio. Fanno
tappa nella postazione romana, dove i centurioni vestono abiti firmati Zeffirelli, provenienti dai magazzini di Cinecittà. Le torri del
castello medievale sono disegnate nel cielo,

Dove il turismo diventa cultura
alle case. C’è l’angelo dell’annuncio ai
pastori, ora Maria e Giuseppe sono già
nella grotta, ed ecco che a mezzanotte in
punto, dentro un raggio di luce appare il
Bambino. «Unico essere non vivente del
presepe vivente», spiega Nicola Gagliardi, vicepresidente degli "Amici del Presepio": un’associazione di una sessantina
di componenti, che la notte di Natale
riesce a movimentare un centinaio di
figuranti
in
costume.
Il razzo sparato sulla grotta è la stella
cometa e inizia l’adorazione dei pastori
che arrivano con gli animali, le galline fra
le braccia, le pecorelle, danze di angeli,
musiche,
coreografie.
E poi arrivano anche i Re Magi, che fino
a quel momento sono rimasti in disparte,
in una tenda regale. Mentre la notte di
Natale va a concludersi fra la folla di
visitatori che si muove sulla collina
con i lumini accesi, in una Betlemme
vivente migliaia di protagonisti indistinti
sono personaggi e persone,
visitatori
e
figuranti.
Agira è il presepe vivente ma non solo,
«è la terra dove è nato lo storico Diodoro
Siculo, lo scrittore di lingua greca che
per primo ha tentato l’avventura di scrivere una storia universale, in 40 volumi.
Ed è una terra ricca di artigianato, ma
soprattutto di monumenti e panorami: dal
castello dove si svolge il presepe, in cima al Monte Teja, il giro d’orizzonte abbraccia le nevi dell’Etna, fino ai laghi
Pozzillo e Sciaguana, i monti Nebrodi e
le Madonie».

la più grande delle sue attrattive turisticoreligiose. «Abbiamo cominciato senza
pretese», ricorda il vicepresidente degli
"Amici". «Anche qui, vent’anni fa, l’albero
e Babbo Natale avevano soppiantato il
presepe, in chiesa la notte di Natale
c’era soltanto qualche fedele, tutti gli altri
a giocare nelle feste. Ci siamo detti: "Se
organizziamo un presepe vivente, chi
verrà?". E invece, in quella notte di Natale del 1989 fu un’autentica invasione.
Poi, l’iniziativa si è consolidata, sono
arrivati i
contributi del Comune,
lo
statuto,l’associazione».
Sono quattro le parrocchie di Agira impegnate nel presepe, Santa Margherita,
San Salvatore, Santa Maria Maggiore,
Sant’Antonio Abate, e il presidente
dell’associazione è il parroco emerito
monsignor Filippo Nasca. I lavori per
l’organizzazione del Natale iniziano a
ottobre, quando dai magazzini si tirano
fuori le parti da montare, capanne, torce,
costumi. Ma si guarda anche lontano:
«Abbiamo mandato due nostri ragazzi in
Molise, per imparare a suonare le zampogne, loro hanno anche acquistato gli
strumenti e oggi suonano nel presepe,
ma vengono chiamati per altre manifestazioni siciliane».
La grande novità del 2008 saranno il
Diluvio universale e l’arca di Noè, con
effetti scenici di temporali, nubifragi e
una grande imbarcazione, nella quale,
fra lampi e tuoni, entreranno Noè, la
sua famiglia, gli animali. Tutto compreso, come sempre, nel tempo che va
dalle 20 all’una di notte: cinque ore
intense, «che non si possono replicare. Qualcuno l’ha anche sollecitato, ma
abbiamo sempre rifiutato: l’evento è
esclusivo e riguarda solo la notte del
24. È pensabile», si chiede Nicola Gagliardi, «che, per esempio, un Venerdì
santo venga rappresentato il lunedì di
Pasqua? Il nostro presepe vive solo in
quelle cinque sei ore dell’anno». Definito "il più originale d’Italia", nel 2003, il
presepe di Agira è stato premiato quale "miglior presepe vivente per la Sicilia orientale".
Caltagirone
Presepi allestiti in 12 Fiat 500
CALTAGIRONE (CATANIA) - Dal 15
dicembre fino al 6 gennaio nell'atrio del
palazzo comunale di Caltagirone, in
provincia di Catania, sarà possibile
ammirare dodici presepi in terracotta
allestiti in altrettante Fiat '500', una
delle quali dipinta con i colori d'ordinanza della Polizia Stradale. L'iniziativa, organizzata nell'ambito di Telethon,
è dell'associazione Casartigiani del
Calatino e del consorzio di artigiani
Elgomecae. "Questa iniziativa, nel
segno del connubio fra la ceramica di
Caltagirone e le Cinquecento - sottolinea il sindaco Francesco Pignataro arricchisce ulteriormente l'offerta culturale della nostra città, che anche
quest'anno propone un ricco calendario di eventi all'insegna della migliore
tradizione natalizia".

It was beyond any expectations to see the numbers of
guests who turned up for our final meeting of the year, held
on 16 November 2008. In fact a record of 95 people attended, including numerous representatives of the Tesoriero
clan who came along to support the guest speaker for the
night, the bass-baritone Michael Tesoriero. Because of the
number of the clan present, the meeting could have well be
called : “The Tesoriero family reunion”.
Linda Nellor, the Co. As. It’s Heritage Project Officer, was the
first to address the meeting. She informed the audience that,
because the bilingual school required more space and whilst
its newly acquired were being refurbished, for the next twelve
or so months, it will be necessary for the monthly meetings to
be transferred to the premises of the Puglia Association, situated at 65 Renwick Street Leichhardt.
Linda then introduced the newly appointed education officer,
Sara Villella, who spoke briefly and expressed her willingness
to cooperate and assist the Family History Group.
Linda concluded by expressing gratitude to the chairman,
Dominic Arrivolo, for his great contribution to the success of
Group since its inception, and as sign of gratitude, invited all
to stand and express a well deserved applause.

Queensland, whilst at the same time working as radio presenter
on Sydney Fm station 2MBS, where an opera program is presented in the evening of the second Tuesday of each month.
Michael concluded his presentation by singing two popular Italian
songs, the second being “Mamma”. An evergreen song, made
famous by the world renowned singer, Beniamino Gigli, before
joining in a Tesoriero group photo with at least 30 others participants.
The meeting was concluded by the Chairman who expressed
sincere thanks to all present for their participation, wished everyone a happy and safe festive season, and reminded all to attend
the next meeting which will be held on the 25 February 09 at the
Puglia Association rooms, 65 Renwick Street, Leichhardt.

The Chairman then took the floor and after expressing his
thanks, introduced his committee which is composed as follows: Fabian Lo Schiavo - vice Chairman; Sue Lopes - Secretary; Lores Borg, Francesca Rullo, Anthony Ravesi, Michael
Megna, Paul Sidoti and Vince Fazio.
He also introduced volunteers Allan Borg Recording technician; Wendy Hearns, editorial duties and Anna Zagame, provider of delicious sfinci.
Dominic then thanked all those who have rendered assistance to the group over the past nine years. They have demonstrated great team spirit and actively cooperated to achieve
their goals.
Michael Tesoriero was then introduced, as was his piano
accompanist , Margaret Titchen.
A gifted speaker, Michael kept his audience “alive” and entertained as he recounted the events of his family life and his
professional development born out of his love of music.
He was born in Sydney of parents whose origins come from
the islands of Panarea and Stromboli. He gave a learned
discourse of the early history of the Eolian islands, the various invasions of the islands and their link with surnames wich
are common to this day—such as Tesoriero, Casamento, Lo
Schiavo, Cincotta and others.
He was able to differentiate the various branches of the Tesoriero clan , much to the delight of the Tesoriero members of
the audience who expressed their approval with loud cheers.
Michael’ love of music led him to enrol at the Sydney conservatorium. In 1974 he initiated his singing career in the cho-
rus of the Australian opera. In 1976 performed as soloist at the Opera House in support of the ever popular
Italian singer Luciano Tajoli.
During the 1980 Sydney season of the Australian ballet's performance of the “Merry Widow”, Michael, was appointed to
organize the choral backing for this beautiful ballet. Soon
after, he joined two other operatic stars to form a group: “The
Bel Canto Trio”.

Meat ragù:
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus 1/2 cup
2 medium onions, chopped in large dice
6 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons fennel seeds
Pinch peperoncino
250g sausage, out of casing
700g ground beef
1 tablespoon tomato paste
4 (400g) cans peeled whole tomatoes,
crushed by hand
1 cup red wine
Salt
Lasagne:
1/2 cup ricotta cheese
2 tablespoon chopped parsley leaves
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 kg dried lasagne noodles
Caciocavallo cheese, to taste
1/4 fennel fronds
Grated Pecorino cheese, to taste
Directions
In a 3-quart saucepan, heat the olive oil
over medium heat. Add the onion and
cook until soft and light golden brown,
about 7 to 8 minutes. Add the garlic, fennel seeds and peperoncino and stir to
combine. Add the sausage, beef, tomato
paste, canned tomatoes, and red wine.
Bring the sauce to boil. Lower the heat
and let the sauce simmer for about 30
minutes before removing the pan from
the heat. Salt, to taste.
In a bowl, combine the ricotta with 1/2
cup extra-virgin olive oil, chopped parsley
and black pepper. Set aside.
Bring 6 quarts of water to a boil. Season
with 2 tablespoons salt. Cook the lasagne
noodles according to the directions on the
package, boiling them until they are tender but still al dente. Drain. Toss the
cooked noodles in the meat ragù with the
caciocavallo cheese, ricotta mixture, and
fennel fronds. Garnish with Pecorino.

Natalie Jane Imbruglia
(born February 4, 1975 is an Australian
singer-songwriter, model and actress.
In the early 1990s, Imbruglia was known
to audiences as Beth Brennan Willis in the
popular Australian soap opera
Neighbours. Two years after leaving the
program, Natalie launched a singing career with the international hit, "Torn". The
subsequent debut album Left of the middle (1997) sold 7 million copies worldwide.
While following releases, White Lilies Island (2001) and Counting Down the Days
(2005), have been unable to match the
commercial success of her debut, the
latter became her first UK #1, and all are
critically acclaimed. To date she has sold
more than 10 million records worldwide.
Second of the four daughters to
a Sicilian (Messinese) father and an Australian mother, Imbruglia grew up on the
Central Coast, north of Sydney, south of
Newcastle. Imbruglia studied ballet, tap
and highland dancing as a child, hoping
to make a career out of it. She also sang
in shopping malls and in school performances. At 14 her dance instructor encouraged her to sing with an all girl group but
once at the audition, the managers saw
that the strikingly pretty youngster with a
beautiful voice could make it on her own.
They wanted to sign her as a solo act but
she refused. "They were like 'we're going
to make you a star...' Even at that age you
couldn't talk to me like that. I was like 'see
you later..”
Imbruglia auditioned for Australian TV commercials and appeared in
spots for Coke and the popular Australian snack twisties. By age 16, she left
high school to start a career in acting.
She soon obtained the chance to play a
regular role on the Australian soap opera, Neighbours at the age of 16 1/2.
Neighbours has also launched the careers of many other successful Australian female artists such as Kylie Minogue, Holly Valance, Delta Goodrem and
Natalie Bassingthwaighte.
By the end of her second year, she left
the show to move to London, immersing
herself in the city's club scene. Refused
a work permit, within a year she became
bankrupt. This forced her to go back to
her passion of singing, something which
she had been putting off because she
thought everyone would laugh at her
because she'd been on Neighbours. Her
effort paid off with a helping hand Roselyn Della Sabina got her signed to BMG
Publishing. Together Roselyn and Natalie came up with a demo of the song
"Torn " which greatly impressed RCA
Records and got her a record contract.
Natalie Imbruglia is one of the
most successful Australian-born female
singers. She has received an MTV
Award for Best New Artist in 1998, and
3 constitutive Grammy Award nominations in 1999. She has sold over 9 million albums worldwide. She was ranked
#11 on Rock on the Net's list of single
artists of the year in 1998, and #76 in
2001. Natalie Imbruglia has tied up her
4-album record deal with BMG after the
delivery of her compilation album Glorious: The singles 1997-2007
Imbruglia's first internationally
released single, (1997), was a cover of
an Ednaswap song. Instantly the single
became one of the biggest hits of the
90s, reaching number two in the UK
Singles Chart and number one on airplay around the world and was number
one on the Billboard Airplay chart for 14
weeks. The single went on to sell over a
million copies in the United Kingdom
alone.
It was also released as a radio single in
the U.S., but not in buyable
CD-format. The single
quickly hit #1 on the Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay
chart, where it stayed for 14
weeks. At the time, singles
not released commercially
were unable to chart to the
overall Hot 100 chart
(combined sales and airplay), so "Torn" made no
appearance on it for a while.
By the time the policy was
changed in late 1998 to allow
airplay-only songs, "Torn" was already
heading down the charts, so its peak on the
Hot 100 only ended up being at #42. The
single also topped the Top 40 Mainstream/CHR Pop and Adult Top 40 charts.
In October 1997, it broke the all-time airplay
record in the U.K. for being the most played
(more than 2000 plays) for six consecutive
weeks. It was finally No. 1 for 14 weeks in
the U.K. radio chart, a record that is being
tied by only Simly Red’s Fairground. It was
the No. 1 radio single in the U.S. from March
to July 1998. It was knocked down to No. 2
by The Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris.
Rick Dees, in his Top 40 Chart show also
declared "Torn" as the 'number one radio
single of 1990s' in their 2000 Millennium
Countdown show, broadcasted from KIISFM on New Year's Eve.
Imbruglia made a surprise appearance
alongside David Armand midway through a
performance of his supposed 'interpretative
dance' routine to sing her hit song Torn at
Amnesty International's The Secret Policeman’ Ball (2006).
Imbruglia was named 6th most
naturally beautiful woman of all time in 2004.
Audrey Hepburn topped the poll in which
only experts like fashion editors, model
agents and make-up artists could vote. The
voting was decided on the "most naturally
beautiful woman, inside and out". She was
ranked 90th on the VH1 100 Sexiest Artists.
She has been seen sporting tattoos of Sanskrit/Hindi inscription "Shreya" on her neck,
Chinese word for courage on her left foot
and Sanskrit Aum on her lower back, and
has her left nipple pierced.[
Imbruglia stated that she has never had any
Plastic surgery but added "I wouldn't rule it
out because I don't know how I'll feel in the
future." She also stated she'd like to "grow
old gracefully, wrinkles and all".
Besides modelling for L'Oréal, Imbruglia also
modelled Sass and Bide's "The Mad Ones"
dress to raise money for cancer.
