When completed in 2007, the joint venture between ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum will produce more than 7.8 million tons of LNG annually and help alleviate the current natural gas shortage. The shortage of natural gas, coupled with a sharp increase in prices, has led to the development of largescale LNG operations. The conventional method of shipping natural gas via pipeline limits the portability of the gas. However, LNG allows the gas to be converted into a liquid and shipped throughout the world like oil on tankers. Once the ship reaches its destination, the LNG is then delivered via a heated pipeline system that returns the liquid to its natural gaseous state. LNG is produced by converting natural gas into a liquid form by cooling it to minus 160 degrees Celsius. The cooling process used to convert natural gas to LNG is similar to that of a commercial freezer. To reach such a low temperature, large compressors are used, which are powered by gas turbines or variable frequency drives and motors. The vessel was launched sideways into the sea at Moss Point shipyard in Mississippi and will remain there until outfitting is complete. She will then proceed to Alaskan waters where her primary role will be to study Alaskan Pollock. The vessel is partly fitted with the main generators, switchgear and propulsion equipment. The package includes the drive system—transformers, drives and filters from the U.S. and Europe, all of which were assembled in the UK plant and delivered as a single assembly on specially designed framework. JUST BEGUN propulsion tandem motors was completed in Monfalcone during the summer of 2002. Because it was necessary to measure the low level of noise and vibration, combined testing was completed in the evening to avoid noise interference from daily operations. The propulsion motors and drive system package, and the bow thruster motor and drive were sent to the U.S. for installation. ASIRobicon’s system integration design and project management team in the UK outlined the requirements and interfaced with U.S.-sourced diesel generators, switchgear and automation, control and monitoring system, including machinery control console. Upon completion of the Oscar Dyson, ASIRobicon was awarded the order for the second vessel in the series. ASIRobicon’s UK business unit, Hill Graham, is the single-source vendor responsible for the diesel electric propulsion system. Work began on the second vessel in the third quarter of 2003. I lavori per il secondo battello sono iniziati a fine 2003. 2 P O W E R S O U R C E T H E E M E R G I N G R U S S I A N M A R K E T : PA R T 2 – D R I V E S A N D M O T O R S In the uncertain Russian market, sharing of information, supplier loyalty and keeping customer commitments count more than any formal contract. ASIRobicon is diligently working to create a positive relationship with our Russian partners and consequently with our customers. Before the Duma election (that took place in December 2003) the structural investments of private companies slowed down. No improvement is expected until the political situation becomes more stable after the Presidential re-election in March of this year. Moreover, the recent crisis of Yukos, the biggest oil company in the country, has brought back the “ghost” of nationalization and has frozen any will for reinvestment of profit margins. Foreign company investments Investments in industrial plants THE EMERGING The information contained in this section is derived from expert analysis of the 2003 Russian industrial market. Fixed investments during the first five months of 2003 registered an increase of 11.8% with respect to the past year, while during the same period of 2002 the growth was only 2.3%. It is an outstanding result that The presence of foreign capital in the development of the Russian production structure is still very modest. Even with President Putin’s numerous reforms to the commercial and financial markets—aimed at increasing foreign trade cooperation, investors are discouraged by many obstacles that still impede the access of foreign goods and services to the Russian market. RUSSIAN MARKET To obtain market share, especially in Russian regions where concurrence is not strong, ASIRobicon’s strategy must focus on two major objectives—developing a well-organized sales and distribution network and taking care of the big customers. summarizes the vigorous economic development started in 2003 and is largely based on the exploitation of the immense human and natural resources of the country (low-cost manpower, gas, oil, minerals). These same resources are vital for the improvement of industrial plants and their infrastructures, now characterized by very poor conditions. The fixed investments have grown in every economic area and are concentrated in the fuel, transportation and oil extraction markets, and on social infrastructures. In 2002, 43% of fixed investments reflected the industrial sectors. Nevertheless, without the necessary penetration of capital and technology from abroad, the Russian industry doesn’t seem to be competitive enough in the international marketplace. Major state monopolies and a few big integrated industrial and financial groups, operating in the energy and natural resources markets, are still a major influence. 3 Even under these circumstances, many experts agree that the situation could rapidly improve for the industrial market, where foreign companies seem to be less fearful of the Russian market. Some indicators include Renault’s recent investments in the automotive industry, the merger between British Petroleum and Tyumen in the oil market, and Royal Dutch-Shell’s exploitation of the Sakhalin 2 offshore oil-fields. Normative and fiscal obstacles still limit the development of foreign investments in Russia. The property rights, foreseen by the Constitution, are not protected. The accounting standards limit access to the companies’ financial statements and differ from international accounting criteria. Finally, investment regulations have many interpretations. 4 C O N T I N U A A PA G I N A 12 P O W E R S O U R C E LONG-TERM CUSTOMER, SAHAVIRIYA STEEL CONFIRMS After a slow year in FY03, several important metals contracts have given ASIRobicon Metal Systems in Genoa a more optimistic outlook for FY05. Among them is an expansion project for Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI), the largest hot-rolled sheet producer in Thailand, that will increase the production capacity of their hot strip mill. ASIRobicon began work on the SSI project a year and a half ago with strict coordination from SSI. SSI’s facility was developed in the early ‘90s by INNSE, with electrical and automation equipment supplied by Ansaldo. The present expansion project is the result of SSI’s need to increase their production capacity in response to the growing demand for hot-rolled sheets in Thailand, which is expected to surge, due to the high demand from cold-rolled sheet users in the automotive and household appliance sectors. As proof of SSI’s satisfaction with the original plant’s performance, they contracted the original equipment manufacturers to implement the expansion project. A consortium was formed to manage the expansion project under the leadership of the mechanical builder, SMS Demag INNSE. Also included are ASIRobicon —the electrical supplier, AM General Contractors/EMCO—the construction company, and Stein Heurey—the walking beam furnace manufacturer. IN ASIRobicon METAL SYSTEMS The consortium signed the contract on September 15, 2003 for a total project amount of approximately $63 million. $13 million goes to ASIRobicon for revamping the mill’s automation and process control system and supplying electrical equipment. The expansion project will increase the plant production capacity by 30%, from the present million 2.4 t/y to 3 million in excess. The investment will also improve rolled-sheet quality and increase plant performance. ASIRobicon is also working with Sahaviriya Group on another project in Thailand. This is the relocation of the former ItalsiderBagnoli hot strip mill, which was dismounted and shipped to the site a year and a half ago. In Sahaviriya’s original plan this project was scheduled to be implemented first. But, due to finances and the present need to meet the demand for hot-rolled sheets, it was delayed until the expansion of the existing mill is completed. ASIRobicon has already supplied the pre-engineering and supervision for the dismounting of the Bagnoli mill. The next phase of the project includes re-powering and revamping the existing main drives and motors and supplying a new automation system and auxiliary drives. The Bagnoli relocation project is expected to commence at the end of 2004. ASIRobicon’s portion of the order is approximately $25 million. And finally, ASIRobicon, in cooperation with SMS/Pro Eco - USA, is commissioning the electrical and automation system for SSI’s new pickling line. 6 P ASIRobicon TO ATTEND THE O W E R S O U R C E OLYMPIC GAMES 2006 In 2006 the Winter Olympic Games will be held in Italy, offering many new business opportunities for ASIRobicon. Bids are now being taken for a considerable amount of ropeway work in the Piedmont area, (northwest Italy) where the Alpine Ski Races are scheduled to take place. The Olympic Committee’s plans are to install seven fixedgrip* chairlifts, three ski lifts and six detachable grips** —including gondola ropeways and chairlifts. ASIRobicon has already won the bid for the Melezet plant and for two plants in Chezal, and is bidding for five more plants with orders expected to be placed soon. The foundation of BMB in Montebello, Vicentino as a supplier of drive-based automation systems traces back to 1968 with the objective to serve the industrial power controls market. It grew to become the leader of a group of small and medium companies working in the power electronics field before Ansaldo Sistemi Industriali aquired it in 1987. The Company grew quite rapidly with a significant amount of industrial automation system business in metals—where ASIRobicon is the world leader of IN TURIN, ITALY many famous cable railways in Italy (including the Tuscan Livorno funicular that works with photovoltaic cells). ASIRobicon’s scope of supply in the ropeway transportation market includes: main and auxiliary drives, logic and system automation, safety standard compliant protections, and control and supervision systems. To meet safety standards, ASIRobicon certifies its systems through a European certification body according to the new European Community Directive CEN of 2003. Traditionally in the ropeway market, the main drive uses DC technology. While AC drives are generally used for auxiliary systems, like “tapis roulant” for ski lifts or the automatic storage of the gondolas (cabins). It is now becoming more common to use AC drives with active-front-end as the main power unit for plant traction systems. Some noteworthy ASIRobicon mountain and passenger ropeway installations include: • Campodolcino tunnel cable railway (northern Italy) • 3-step plant that goes from Courmayeur to Helbronner Peak (11,358 ft), the highest peak of Monte Bianco (the highest mountain in Europe) Madritsch chairlift in Süd Tyrol Gondola ropeway in Cavalese (Cermis) La seggiovia di Madritsch nel Sud Tirolo La cabinovia di Cavalese (Trento, Alpe Cermis) 7 long-product applications, rubber, material handling and the ceramics markets. Since the very beginning, BMB-ISE Automation Systems played a leading role as a supplier of automation systems for the ropeway transportation sector, both for urban and mountain installations. Today it still leads the market with 30 years of experience and an installed base of more than 900 plants worldwide. Its success in the ropeway market can be seen in the following famous international installations: the passenger ropeway of the “Pan de Azúcar” in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the gondola ropeway of ”Ocean Park” in Hong Kong, the detachable grip plant designed for the “Sevilla Expo” (Spain) in 1992 and • “Freccia nel Cielo” climbs to the Tofane Mountains (northeast Italy), • Breuil-Plan Maison (northwest Italy) • Malcesine plant on Garda Lake, with rotating cabins. Arguably one of ASIRobicon’s most interesting ropeway applications is a four-car passenger ropeway—Solda - “City of Milan” Shelter. It carries the highest number of people per branch in the world. Products supplied for this ropeway application include the drive, automation systems, path programming, braking modulation and control systems, surveillance system, and the supervision software used for plant maintenance and diagnostics. In questo settore ASIRobicon vanta O L Y M P I C G A M E S 2006 ASIRobicon AI GIOCHI OLIMPICI DI TORINO 2006 8 vetture. C O N T I N U A A PA G I N A 1 0 P O W E R S O U R C E WEFTEC TRADESHOW LA FIERA WEFTEC A TROPICAL SUCCESS UN EVENTO DI SUCCESSO IN UNA CORNICE TROPICALE An indoor tropical paradise welcomed visitors to the ASIRobicon booth at the Water Environment Technical Exposition and Conference (WEFTEC). The booth transformed ASIRobicon’s space at the Los Angeles Convention Center into a twenty-by-forty foot tropical island, complete with tiki huts and sales people sporting tropical garb. Prior to the show, a direct-mail campaign invited customers and potential customers to “Catch the Perfect Wave” by visiting the ASIRobicon booth. Anyone who came to the booth to watch the live Active Harmonic Filter demonstration walked away with a “Catch the Perfect Wave” T-shirt. Other equipment displayed at the show included a 500HP Perfect Harmony VFD, 100 and 200 Amp Active Harmonic Filters, and three low voltage GT3000 VFDs. The show took place from October 12–15. Gli altri prodotti in esposizione comprendevano un VDF Perfect Harmony da 500HP, Filtri delle Armoniche da 100 and 200 Amp, e tre VFD in bassa tensione GT3000. 9 P O W E R S O U R C E CONTINUED FROM PG 7 in the center of the city. For safety purposes (it is impossible to use generators inside a tunnel placed in a town center) and continuity of operation, the main and the rescue drives are controlled by DC Bus bar drives with storage batteries. This system keeps the vehicle moving, even through a power failure. Other recent orders include a 6-seat gondola ropeway, three detachable grip** chairlifts and a dozen fixed-grip* installations in Italy. ASIRobicon’s presence in the ropeway market continues to be positive, with many new and revamp installations projected (revamping usually concerns the technical and normative adjustment). One high-profile urban installation is a horizontal/vertical cable ropeway in Genoa, in which the vehicle, after passing through a horizontal tunnel, is lifted up and emerges Fixed grip*: A single rope ring to which the chairs or the cabins are gripped, leaving the same distance between each cabin. The power unit can be placed upstream or downstream. Detachable grip**: The system detaches the cabin from the rope and decelerates it when entering the departure/arrival station. The cabin slows down inside the station to allow users to easily get in and out. It then accelerates again when leaving the station, at which point the system grips the cabin back to the rope. The power unit can be placed upstream or downstream. La motrice può essere a monte o a valle dell’impianto P O W E R S O U R C E T H E E M E R G I N G R U S S I A N M A R K E T : PA R T 2 – D R I V E S A N D M O T O R S CONTINUED FROM PG 3 The delayed liberalization of the energy market, inefficiency of the bureaucracy and the fragility of the banking system, along with the weakness of the judicial system, represent further obstacles to the massive penetration of investments from abroad. The economic sectors that registered the largest amount of foreign investments during the first quarter of 2003, similar to 2002, are: combustibles ($456M), communications ($459M), nonferrous metals ($383M) and ferrous metals ($308M). Electromechanical market outlook The electromechanical sector absorbed $190M in 2000 (before 2000 the amount was approx. $290M). Italian involvement decreased to 3.9% in 2000 (-8.1% with respect to 1997). The hope is for a more positive trend in the future. Ukraine rules the market with a share of 30.6%, growing with respect to 1997, Germany follows with 12.9% (11.3% in 1997). Great Britain (6.7% in 2000, up 538% with respect to 1997) and Japan (2.6%, up 90% with respect 1997) register the best performances. To obtain market share, especially in Russian regions where concurrence is not strong, ASIRobicon’s strategy must focus on two major objectives—developing a well-organized sales and distribution network and taking care of the big customers. • Saint Petersburg Electrical Company, active in the sale of Perfect Harmony for revamping systems with existing medium voltage motors and low voltage systems. • Finergis a.s., Czech company formerly called CECADE; responsible for electrifying all of the gas compression stations in the former Soviet Union and is active in the penetration of the Gazprom market. • Russkie Motory Sila, based in Ekaterinburg, has rapidly started selling the GT3000; widerange of experience in the low voltage systems market and is also poised to sell medium voltage systems in the Ural Mountains region and Siberia. VEI ASIRobicon, based in Moscow, plans to strategically coordinate distributors, promote the company and products, and function as a local service center. Service and customer training is a key issue in a territory as large as Russia. Strategic products for the Russian market include medium voltage drives, particularly the Perfect Harmony. There are at least 3,000 medium voltage motors running at 6,000 and 10,000 volts with the potential to be converted to variable speed. Moreover, ASIRobicon - BMB can count on a large installed base of FOREIGN INVESTMENTS IN RUSSIA (in million $) TOTAL 2000 2001 2002 1st quarter 2003 Variation % 1st quarter 2003 1st quarter 2002 10.958 14.258 19.780 6.268 24.7% Given the small number of large industrial groups, ASIRobicon is able to reach them through both managerial and technical contacts. In particular we are striving to develop a relationship with Gazprom, responsible for administrating all of Russia’s gas extraction (1/3 of the gas extracted in the world). ASIRobicon is pushing the supply of compression systems that will use Silcovert S and Perfect Harmony medium voltage AC Drives, coupled to high-speed motors. Another plan is to promote the sale of drives and motors for pumping stations in cooperation with Yukos and Lukoil, both private companies involved in oil extraction and transportation. Identifying decision makers is complicated because many of these major companies have different names, brands and partially independent structures at a local level. Because of this, a distribution network is vital. That’s why ASIRobicon has contracted several local distributors, who have a better handle on the non-official channels and can provide information on products and quotations more effectively. ASIRobicon has signed a “Distribution Agreement” with the following companies: 11 automation systems in Russia for the rubber and plastics, and copper and glass industries. Motors are on the opposite end of the spectrum. There are many motor manufacturers in Russia and the number of imported machines is rather small, even less than what Poland, a country much smaller than Russia, imports. Medium/Large motors are still handcrafted in Russia. So, even though our explosion-proof and high-speed motors represent a technological market niche for companies working in gas compression (including Gazprom), the cost of handcrafted motors makes the local product extremely competitive. 2003-2005 Forecast The Russian government has prepared a plan that targets a 6% growth rate in Russian economic development between the years of 2003 and 2005, through an increase of productivity, a reduction in energy consumption and an increase in competition. This year a few important infrastructural works should increase Russian oil and gas exportation, like the “Blue Stream” pipeline, C O N T I N U E D O N PA G E 1 3 P O W E R S O U R C E R U S S I A , I L M E R C AT O E M E R G E N T E : PA R T E 2 – D R I V E E M O T O R I C O N T I N U A D A PA G I N A 4 Gli ostacoli allo sviluppo dell’investimento estero in Russia sono ancora oggi di tipo normativo e fiscale. Per quanto riguarda i motori va detto che in Russia sono presenti molti produttori, tanto che le importazioni di 12 C O N T I N U A A PA G I N A 13 P O W E R S O U R C E CONTINUED FROM PG 11 running from Russia to Turkey, (built by Italian SAIPEM) and “CPC” pipeline, that carries the Caspian oil to Novorossysk—in the Russian territory. Some collaborated Italian-Russian programs include Merloni Elettrodomestici (inland production of household appliances), Duferco (recently purchased a steel plant), and Welko and Marazzi (ceramic tile production factories). The Italian strategy to increase investments is based on the “industrial district” model, a network of small and medium companies well introduced in the territory. The areas included in the Russian Federation for this initiative are Lipetsk, Saint Petersburg, Moscow and Ekaterinburg (Duferco and Stoppani have facilities there). In the Ekaterinburg area, there will be the so-called “iron district” that includes industries related to metals and defense markets. Because of our presence in the GIM (Italian Entrepreneurs Group) and our relationship with ICE (Institute for Foreign Trade), both located in Moscow, we are monitoring these programs in the hopes that they become real opportunities. An additional reassurance of Italian presence in the Federation is the “Agreement Memorandum” which amounts to the conversion of former Soviet Union debt into Italian investments in the Russian economy. The agreement is scheduled to go into effect in the near future. Finally, Italian companies can count on the support of SACE (Insurance Services for Foreign Trade), which is in alliance with a recent decision by the OCSE (Organization for Development and Economic Cooperation) to promote Russia from the fifth to the fourth category of insurance risk. For big industrial projects, credit lines have been created by groups of Italian and international banks. One such credit line is with Mediobanca/Simest/Vnesheconombank. It has a maximum credit of 1.5 milliards of Euro, ($1.5M) which ASIRobicon is using for a BMB-ISE Automation Systems copper project. Other credit lines are with Banca Intesa BCI/Vneshtorgbank ($20M), BNL/Vneshtorgbank ($10M) and Istituto San Paolo IMI/Vneshtorgbank ($20M). ASIRobicon’s approach In the uncertain Russian market, sharing of information, supplier loyalty and keeping customer commitments counts more than any formal contract. ASIRobicon is diligently working to create a positive relationship with our Russian partners and consequently with the customers. CONTINUED FROM COVER CONTINUA DALLA COPERTINA Large-scale LNG production is critical to meet the world’s energy needs. ASIRobicon’s participation in Qatargas II positions us as the world leader in drive and motor design for LNG compressor applications, which should lead to additional LNG work as the process becomes more widely used. ASIRobicon will supply three 45MW Perfect Harmony Variable Frequency Drives and 45MW High Speed Synchronous Motors to Qatargas II. ASIRobicon’s motor/drive configuration will support the project in three key ways: La configurazione motore/drive ASIRobicon si inserisce nel progetto con le seguente modalità: • Starting the gas turbine and the compressors to propel them to their required speed; • Providing power to the gas turbine to keep the compressor functioning at its maximum capacity during hot daytime ambient temperatures; • Converting excess power produced by the compressor during cooler evening temperatures into energy that can support the facility’s electrical infrastructure. After conducting an extensive review of the technology offerings from other industrial power control suppliers, ExxonMobil selected ASIRobicon for the LNG project. ASIRobicon’s products offered the features needed to ensure continuous operation of Qatargas II for seven years. These features include: 15 • Power Stability – The Perfect Harmony drive design limits torque ripple, which are current pulses common to conventional drives that can cause machinery damage or interference with other electrical equipment. • Reliability – Through redundant systems and components, the Perfect Harmony can be removed from the production system for service without impacting the overall process. • Power Quality – Even if the power supplied by a local utility contains disturbances that could disrupt sensitive electrical equipment, the Perfect Harmony drives filter such disturbances and prevent system shutdowns.
