Since 2013 the state rooms in the Winter Palace of Prince Eugene of Savoy have not only been home to a museum, but have in particular also been a place of lively exploration of its intercultural history. Among other things, they serve as a venue for the presentation of important positions in contemporary art. Prince Eugene was a great patron of the arts; as such the site-specific interventions that seek discursive analysis of the Baroque on all levels are entirely fitting. The Winter Palace continues to be State of the Art! State of the Art! Das Winterpalais ist damals wie heute State of the Art! State of the Art! Humans have for ever built to protect and claim what they like the most. Whether it was daughters, property, treasures, animals or land. Rapunzel used to be everywhere. Today, while nature’s treasures are disappearing fast, new riches are artificially created and patented, and their owners resort to the same tactics as before, mining and claiming the splendor of creation that was bestowed on all of us. But for sure, their protected paradises will fare the same fate as the old paradises. With a fall. Life always finds a way. Cadranno. La vita trova sempre la sua strada. Baroque, the art form of absolutism and the CounterReformation, often makes use of the perspective of the over-view, that of the ruler or god: the view from above. This “supervision” is borne out of a desire to monitor, oversee, manage and control as well as to represent power, wealth and luxury. Even today, the merging of architecture and art in the sense of a Baroque artistic synthesis or theatrum mundi (world theatre) can be experienced in a synesthetic way here – the Baroque sensibility, which still has a deep impact on the Austrian psyche, can still be felt. This desire is reflected in Baroque architecture above all else. Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736) certainly was one of the most prominent protagonists of the era and his Winter Palace in Vienna city center, also known as the City Palace, is one of the pre-eminent examples of High Baroque architecture around. The strategically smart field commander, who excelled in the wars against the Ottomans, amongst others, was also the president of the Imperial War Council (1703–1736) and the official governor of the Spanish Netherlands (1716–1724). He used the Winter Palace for private and representative purposes. After 1752 Eugene’s erstwhile primary residence housed various state institutions. It has housed the Ministry of Finance since 1848. After extensive renovations (2007-2013), the palace’s stately rooms where transferred to Österreichische Galerie Belvedere on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of Prince Eugene’s birth in fall 2013, and the rooms were then made accessible to the public for the first time. Prince Eugene was not merely an important military commander, but also a collector of artworks, books and plants, and in addition established his own zoo (menagerie). He was open to and supportive of the artistic avant-garde of his time and in this sense a contemporary review of Baroque topics and ideas through site-specific interventions is very much in keeping with the monarch’s attitude – seeing as these new works by international artists are direct responses to the context and architecture of the Winter Palace, enabling a contemporary, interdisciplinary over-view of the era of Austrian Baroque. After the first plots/buildings were acquired in 1694/95, the brilliant Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach began to plan and construct the palace before being superseded by his ingenious archrival Lucas von Hildebrandt in 1700. The latter expanded the façade to include 17 impressive window bays and three portals between 1723 and 1725 after Prince Eugene had acquired further buildings. In the staging of successive functional spaces and lines of sight, the architecture and in particular the interior design reflect a desire to represent power and the will to order the world. For instance, there are secular spaces such as the antechamber, the audience and conference Axel Köhne 34 Welt wider. Vito + Maria Elena Acconci have created a prismatic architecture made of bubble wrap inside the chapel; as a result the existing ecclesiastical design of the church interior is only indistinctly visible. Based on a quadrangular floor plan, the architectural structure soars, suggesting a diagonal upward movement. Its polygonal counterpart on the ceiling, causing its irregular layout, adds a further captivating aspect to the walk-in room within a room. In Prince Eugene’s time, the chapel was situated in his private chambers in the rear part of the Palace; it was established at its current location only later, in around 1752, using the original altar. corrispondenza poligonale al soffitto, che fa emergere una struttura irregolare. During restoration works on the terrace in 2004, workers discovered preparatory drawings for a wall fresco depicting an ancient amphitheater featuring columns, arcades and stairs. To date, it is not known why the fresco was never completed. Zaha Hadid has transformed the Euclidian geometries of these historical preparatory drawings as a trompe l’œil within the alcove at the center of the terrace. Connecting the past, present, and future, the installation of steel tubes describes a fluid, four-dimensional world defined by the narrative of abstraction and flow of space. More Einsteinian than Cartesian, 50 it is a world determined by seamless connectivity; a microcosmic extrusion of the dynamism, complexity, and fluid spatial ideas inherent in Hadid’s architecture. — Magdalena Jetelová The essential is no more visible, 2015 Titanium, carbon fiber, projection, sound / Titan, Kohlefaser, Projektion, Ton / Titanio, fibra di carbonio, proiezione, suono 738 × 880 × 1400 cm in collaboration with / in Zusammenarbeit mit / in collaborazione con: Schiebel Elektronische Geraete GmbH / Wien The privileged view of the world from above was originally considered the divine perspective; the fascination with this perspective of an absolute ruler is recognizable. The projection’s perspective no longer overlaps a new bird’seye view in a divine, omniscient way painted by the artist, but by means of digital calculations and technology. Jetelová confronts history with the current speeding up of virtual and real life. She examines our way of looking at the world of art from a new perspective. Reality is the absence of reality. A large sculpture fills the Gallery Room, where Prince Eugene once presented parts of his art collection. This abstract sculpture, made of industrial aluminum elements, with its complex form vocabulary establishes a direct reference to the baroque stateroom and its history. As a sculptor, Kienzer is particularly interested in the characteristics of “his” material, aluminum, and in the tension created by the interconnected individual elements. Kienzer considers a sculpture “a momentary physical state of matter and objects.” Kienzer’s voluminous work of art is a direct response to the baroque room it is placed in. The artist always takes the room, the large cavity, into consideration as a prerequisite of the sculpture – it becomes part of the sculpture, for the sculpture was designed exclusively for this room. For his artistic intervention Hans Kupelwieser has built a wooden hut close to the room’s gallery walls. The simple structure made of spruce recalls a mountain hut where one may seek refuge—also from the golden splendor. Kupelwieser causes the baroque abundance to disappear, replacing it with a plain, simple room. Golden rays of light reach into the walk-in wooden sculpture only through a number of slits deliberately incorporated into the structure; however, details of the surroundings can no longer be made out. Baroque seems to be very far away. The hut is a political, revolutionary act against the palace. In Prince Eugene’s former State Bedroom all the working materials and utensils that Hermann Nitsch requires for the “preparatory work for an action” can be found: a long table has been laid in white; there are glasses, two-liter bottles of wine, stretchers, and buckets with paint residues. The long sidewall has been covered by a white cloth; a manifesto has been printed on the cotton fabric, presenting a concise summary of Nitsch’s key topics and ideas. In front of the cloth the recording of an action performed by Nitsch during the 2012 Havana Biennial, interspersed with parts of an interview given this winter, is projected onto a wooden wall. The projection marks the spot on the wall where the pig that is to be eviscerated will hang. The score for the intervention at the Winter Palace can be seen in a showcase; a relic (a gown used for painting) is on display on the sidewall. On Pentecost Nitsch will stage a Pentecost reception in the exhibition room, where he will serve his own wine to visitors. In her work Schlegel refers to the concepts associated with a conference table: talks, discourse, and the juxtaposition of different arguments. The dull lead coating of the table contrasts with the gold of the room’s baroque furnishings. The poisonous heavy metal points to weapons, ammunition, and war, which were essential for making such lavish décor in a baroque setting possible in the first place. The surface is covered with quotes by Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu (c. 544–496 BC), written with blood-red pigment. In the sculpture’s center, an inserted mirror reflects the historical painting on the ceiling by Peter Strudel: Der Sieg der Gerechtigkeit über den ungerechten Herrscher (The Victory of Justice over the Unjust Ruler). This poetic work of art is situated in the former Library Room of Prince Eugene, whose comprehensive collection of books laid the foundations for the Austrian National Library. For years Kiki Smith has been exploring the relation of the natural and the intellectual or spiritual world in her works. She draws attention to the creaturely nature of human beings with their moral concepts and animalistic instincts, but also their spiritual and intellectual needfulness; Smith’s universe consists of cycles of nature, decay, dissolution, and rebirth. Girl is correlated with White Blankets, a work featuring ink drawings of birds on white blankets. The intervention relates to its baroque surroundings in deliberately ambivalent ways: on the one hand the object seems like a foreign object landed in the center of the room; on the other hand its haptic characteristics enable visitors to interact playfully with each other and with the room. If touched by visitors, the object, filled with air and water, transforms these touches into reflections of light that create an interactive painting on the ceiling. The installation, which also features a specifically created fragrance, piques visitors’ curiosity and makes them want to interact with this foreign object. The installation’s haptic, physical, mysterious, and alluring qualities, its proportions as well as its use of light engage all the senses to counteract the representative architecture of the Baroque. — Iv Toshain NOMOS BASILEUS, 2015 Stainless steel, chrome, sandblast, aluminum, neon / Edelstahl, Chrom, Sandstrahl, Aluminium, Neon / Acciaio inossidabile, cromo, acciaio sabbiato, alluminio, neon Ø 250 cm (morning star / Morgenstern / stella del mattino) In Prince Eugene’s antechamber at the Winter Palace visitors are greeted by a martial, oversized morning star that symbolizes Venus, the evening star, and Lucifer. The installation has replaced the valuable crystal chandelier, deprived of its technical and representative role. On the globe, pierced by 21 spikes, “NOMOS BASILEUS” (the law is king) is written in neon letters. Toshain refers to a text on the deeds of Hercules by the poet Pindar (518–446 BC). The words nomos, Greek for “law,” and basileus, the “king,” point to the law and violence, the historical and present constant of war. These words constitute a formula for the very focal point bequeathed to Western political thinking—in a democracy, the law rules. However, if you walk around the morning star, NOMOS BASILEUS becomes BASILEUS NOMOS (the king is the law). Its material seems cold and hard, while its form hints at sensuality and softness. This irritating discrepancy relates to the room itself, a baroque Gesamtkunstwerk. Wakolbinger’s corresponding video work features underwater creatures (pelagic sea squirts), thus referring to the fact that life originated in water, to a paradisiacal nature, and at the same time to the cycle of life and death. The video enters into a dialog with the heavenly putti and the flowers of the painting on the ceiling. The sound track was written by avantgarde musician Christian Fennesz.
