William Armstrong: Magician of the North
William George Armstrong è stato un inventore, scienziato e uomo d’affari del XIX secolo: può
essere considerato il Bill Gates della sua epoca. Come produttore di gru idrauliche, navi ed
armamenti ampliò la propria sfera d’azione in tutto il mondo e in Italia in particolare. Henrietta
Heald, autrice della sua biografia pubblicata recentemente, parlerà del contributo dato da questo
lungimirante ingegnere all’industria, all’istruzione, all’ingegneria e della sua speciale relazione con
l’Italia e Venezia.

La gru idraulica Armstrong Mitchell: il restauro
La gru Armstrong Mitchell è una delle principali attrattive dell’Arsenale di Venezia, dove fu
collocata tra il 1883 e il 1885. Non ci si aspetterebbe mai di trovare questo capolavoro di ingegneria
industriale –n definito dall’architetto Norman Foster come “un pezzo di inestimabile valore
appartenente al patrimonio di archeologia industriale di Venezia” - tra le glorie architettoniche
veneziane. La gru, elemento essenziale nella storia dell’ingegneria, è unica, non solo perché è il solo
esemplare rimasto di questo tipo e, ma anche perché ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale nella storia di
Venezia. L’intervento conservativo non sarà facile: i rilievi strutturali e le analisi scientifiche hanno
messo in luce il grande impegno necessario. Claudio Menichelli della Soprintendenza per i Beni
Architettonici ed Ambientali di Venezia e laguna ha studiato approfonditamente la gru e descriverà il
progetto proposto per la sua conservazione.

L’Arsenale di Venezia, da una rinascita all’altra (1866-2010)
Il passato, la storia recente e il futuro dell’Arsenale di Venezia saranno illustrati da Filippo Maria
Paladini, autore di Arsenale e Museo storico navale. Mare, lavoro e uso pubblico della storia (Il
Poligrafo 2008). Tra le sue pubblicazioni, ricordiamo Un caos che spaventa. Poteri, territori e
religioni di frontiera nella Dalmazia della tarda eta' veneta (Marsilio 2002) e un’edizione dei
dispacci inviati al Senato di Venezia dai governatori e balivi di Corfù nel XVIII secolo (1997).
Insegna Storia della marginalità e dell’assistenza presso la Facoltà di Scienze Politiche
dell’Università di Torino.
Durante l’incontro sarà garantito il servizio di interpretazione simultanea inglese-italiano

William Armstrong: Magician of the North

William George Armstrong was a visionary 19th-century inventor, scientist and businessman, the
Bill Gates of his day. As a manufacturer of hydraulic cranes, ships and armaments his influence
spread across the world and, in particular, to Italy. Henrietta Healed, author of his recently published
biography, will describe his contributions to science, engineering, industry, education and his special
relationship with Italy and with Venice.
The Armstrong Mitchell Hydraulic Crane: a restoration

The Armstrong Mitchell Crane is a prominent feature of the Venice Arsenale, where it was installed
between 1883 and 1885. People do not expect to find this masterpiece of industrial engineering
among the architectural glories of Venice, a survival that the architect Norman Foster describes as,
“a priceless part of the industrial heritage of Venice”. The crane is unique, not just because it is the
sole remaining model of its type and an outstanding piece of engineering history, but also because it
had an important place in the naval life of Venice. The conservation of the crane will be no easy feat;
structural surveys and scientific analyses have demonstrated the huge amount of work to be done.
Claudio Menichelli of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici ed Ambientali of Venice and its
lagoon has studied the crane in depth and will describe the proposed preservation of this great
landmark.
The Venice Arsenale, from one renaissance to another (1866-2010)

The past, recent history, and future of the Venice Arsenale will be described by Filippomaria
Paladini, author of Arsenale e Museo storico navale. Mare, lavoro e uso pubblico della storia (Il
Poligrafo 2008). Earlier publications include Un caos che spaventa. Poteri, territori e religioni di
frontiera nella Dalmazia della tarda eta' veneta (Marsilio 2002), and an edition of the dispatches
sent to the Venetian Senate by the governors and bailiffs of Corfu in the 18th century (1997). He
teaches "The history of marginalisation and of assistance" in the Faculty of Politics and Sociology of
the University of Turin.
