mc2gallery presenta per la prima volta una collettiva di 4 artisti vietnamiti:
Tiffany Chung, Loan Nguyen, Trong Gia Nguyen, Do Hoang Tuong.
Due fotografe (Tiffany Chung, 1969 e Loan Nguyen, 1977) un artista concettuale (Trong
Gia Nguyen,1971) che usa installazioni e video, ed un pittore (Do Hoang Tuong, 1960)
4 artisti eterogenei nel loro fare arte, accomunati solo dal loro paese di provenienza: il
Viet Nam. Un paese antico, splendido, dalle tradizioni millenarie e da un recente
passato doloroso che ancora oggi crea qualche tabù, nel parlarne. I nostri ricordi più
vicini della storia del Viet Nam sono filtrati dalla cinematografia americana e dalle
famose foto dei grandi reporter (pensiamo alla foto della bambina nuda bruciata dal
Napalm che corre verso l’obiettivo di Kim Phuc – Vietnam 1972). Immagini legate
indissolubilmente al conflitto che ha travolto migliaia di vite, da entrambe le parti,
lasciando profonde ferite oggi ancora non del tutto sanate, che aleggiano come
fantasma sulle politiche estere recenti della grande America. Ricordi ben lontani dalla
realtà odierna, almeno nelle grandi città come Sai Gòn (Ho Chi Minh City) che sta
vivendo l’esplosione di una contemporaneità inimmaginabile, che il Viet Nam ha
raggiunto – e sta continuando a grandi passi - dopo la politica di apertura detta Đổi mới
(= rinnovo) iniziata nel 1986.
In mostra, gli artisti hanno un’età compresa tra i 32 e i 49 anni. Alcuni di loro hanno
studiato in USA e sono cittadini americani, tornati in Viet Nam anche per la prima volta
(come Trong Gia Nguyen) o stabilitisi lì da qualche anno (come Tiffany Chung). Altri,
come Do Hoang Tuong, sono nati in VietNam e vivono in Viet Nam. Non a caso,la forza
della sua pittura ne testimonia in qualche modo l’aspetto meno “internazionale” rispetto
agli altri artisti, ma per questo forse il più forte e viscerale di tutti, con la sua pittura “di
pancia”, dal sapore baconiano... i più giovani invece, hanno studiato in Usa (Tiffany
Chung, Trong Gia Nguyen) o in Svizzera (Loan Nguyen) e ciò ha permesso una
formazione inevitabilmente internazionale che si riflette nella scelta dei supporti:
fotografie, video, installazioni.
Le eterogenee tematiche sono accomunate, tuttavia,
da una volontà di capire e
indagare, in qualche modo, gli sviluppi o le tradizioni di un paese d’origine, il loro, tra i
più belli e devastati al mondo, dove il peso del ricordo e della Storia segna e ha segnato
generazioni intere, compresi loro, eredi involontari di quel Viet Nam filo americano
costretto alla fuga dopo la caduta di Saigon il 30 Aprile 1975... Giai Phong!

mc2gallery presents for the first time a group of 4 Vietnamese Artists: Tiffany Chung,
Loan Nguyen, Trong Gia Nguyen Do Hoang Tuong. Two photographers (Tiffany Chung,
1969 and Loan Nguyen, 1977) a conceptual artist (Trong Gia Nguyen, 1971) who uses
installations and videos, and a painter (Do Hoang Tuong, 1960). 4 disparate artists in
their art making, united only by their country of origin: Viet Nam.
An ancient town, beautiful, from the ancient traditions and with a recent painful past that
still creates some taboos, in talking about it. Our memories, closer in the history of Viet
Nam are filtered from American cinema and from the famous photographies of the great
reporters (think of the pictures of naked girl burned by napalm running towards the goal
of Kim Phuc - Vietnam 1972).
Images inextricably linked to the conflict that has swept thousands of lives on both sides,
leaving deep wounds not yet completely healed, that hover like ghosts on the recent
foreign policies of the great America. Memories are far from reality today, at least in big
cities like Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) who is experiencing the explosion of a
unimaginable contemporarity that Viet Nam has achieved - and is continuing apace after the policy of openness named Đổi moi (renewal =), began in 1986.
In exhibition, the artists are aged between 32 and 49 years. Some of them have studied
in the USA and are American citizens, some of them are returned to Viet Nam for the
first time (as Trong Gia Nguyen) and others are settled there by several years (as
Tiffany Chung). Still others, such as Do Hoang Tuong, were born in Vietnam and are
living in Viet Nam.
Not surprisingly, the strength of his painting testifies, in some way, the appearance less
"international" in spite of other artists, but because of this is perhaps the strongest and
most visceral of all, with his painting of Baconian taste ... The youngers, the other hand,
have studied in the USA (Tiffany Chung, Trong Gia Nguyen) or in Switzerland (Loan
Nguyen) and this has allowed international training that inevitably reflected in the choice
of media: photographs, video, installations.
The disparate topics are related, however, by a desire to understand and investigate, in
some way, developments or traditions of a country of origin, their country, that is among
the most beautiful and ravaged in the world, where the weight of memory and of History,
marks and had marked entire generations, including them, involuntary heirs of that Viet
Nam pro-American, forced to flee after the fall of Saigon April 30, 1975 ... Giai Phong!
