If you concentrate your gaze on an object in full light and then close your eyes, for an instant, outlines of irritated contours remain imprinted on your retinas, like an immediate reduction of what you have just seen to line. During this instant, before it escapes from his memory, Alberto Finelli seeks to prolong this moment, to capture it, through a purely mental operation, into a defined image that reveals itself as apparitions – or better – as unexpected blunders. Behind this first impression, however, is disguised a much more articulated work of structure, composite construction, and material from expressive language, in which shadow dominates. In this reduction to line, that stems from drawing, arrives at etching (in which he records the best results of his work) and branches even out to the applied arts; Alberto constructs a vision that imparts a gradual deciphering of the image: only an attentive observation allows for a reconstruction of those spatial coordinates and elements of the visual story, with the desired fringes of evocative ambiguity. It would be nice, in the future, to disassemble his works into their singular visual sources, and into the logic that is made in the assembly of the image. Without the author’s iconography of the cinema, as a reference for manipulation and transformation (but not betrayal) there would not be, beyond the icons, the linguistic modality of the elaboration of a “story” that, like his, comes from still images. One must remember, however, that behind an impression of immediacy in the images there is disguised long and patient work. The blacks of his drawings and of his, are not deaf, uniform applications of tone but slow additions of strokes. Alberto reaches the deepness of the shadows layer by layer, by slow juxtapositions of pencil marks and slow etchings. It is an ancient craft, that for Alberto no longer has secrets, that he brings forward to new possibilities of language and of storytelling. A presente, Finelli vive e lavora fra Milano e Munich. Fiammetta Luino Alberto Finelli was born in 1986, at Sant’Agata de’ Goti (Benevento). Having grown up between his artist father’s studio and art exhibitions, he enrolls to the Brera Academy of Fine Arts to study Painting. Out of curiosity, Finelli attends a printmaking course during his first year, discovering a world akin to his sensitivity. The encounter is so fundamental that he eventually chooses to graduate in Graphic Arts. In 2008, he studies in Erasmus at the Akademie der Bildende Künste in Munich. Struck by the critical approach and the openness to discussion promoted by the German art teaching system, Finelli signs up for a course in Visual Arts, which he attends in parallel to Brera. 2009 is a year of artistic debut for Finelli. The series of etchings Pieno e vuoto is awarded the first prize in Visual Arts at the Salon I, the annual show organized by the Brera Academy. That same year, Finelli is granted his first one-man show at the Mc Gallery in New York, where he exhibits etchings, drawings and cliché-verres. Since then, Finelli has exhibited in several European cities. In 2011, he is invited by the artists’ society La Générale en Manufacture to exhibit in Paris, in his second one-man show. The exhibition, curated by Anna Wondrak, includes some drawings, etchings and, for the first time, some photographic prints. That same year, Finelli is a resident artist at the Lia International Art Centre in Leipzig, where he exhibits twelve prints inspired by the image of the flâneur at the LIA-sommerausstellung exhibition. His works have also been selected for several group exhibitions in Arezzo, Ceský Krumlov, Leipzig, Lodi, Milan, Munich, Jacksonville, Plauen, Stuttgart. In 2012 new encounters push Finelli to explore new techniques. Lorenzo Lotto’s inlays in Bergamo encourage him to experiment with this ancient craft. That same year, Finelli presents his first two inlays – Over the Top and Cos’ì dev’essere – at the Jahresausstellung at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. The works attract the audience’s attention and admiration. Meanwhile, the Galleria Formentini in Milan organizes a collaborative exhibition, in which Finelli and the artist Ray Smith present a series of works inspired by the cadavres exquis game, loved by the Surrealists. During his stay in Munich, Finelli has also had the occasion to curate three exhibitions at the Gartenhaus der Kunst, bringing together international artists (Servus!, 2010; Subtópos, 2010; Die Spur, 2011). Finelli currently lives and works between Milan and Munich.
