This Doctoral Dissertation is dedicated to the philosophical reflection centred on description as a
concept in the natural sciences of the late 19th century. The starting point is the “crisis” within the
fundamental concepts of physics (i.e. the critique of Newtonian’s notion of absolute space and time
and their 19th-century versions, the concept of force and the principle of causality) and linked to it, the
reflection about about the condition of possibility of experience and science. Central to this context is
a connection between physics and the physiology of the senses as it is envisioned from Müller to
Mach.
A fundamental aspect is expounded by anti-transcendentalism: on the one hand it investigates the
relationship between the critique of space as an a priori intuition and the critique of the concept of
absolute space. On the other, it discusses the contrast between theories based on the tenet of causal
explanation and theories promoting the description of a system of co-determinate functional
interactions. In the latter, every point can be considered as the centre of the system itself and each
event can be seen as the cause of the other. In my thesis, I contend that the ‘phenomenistic’
reconstructions of mechanics by Ernst Mach and Heinrich Hertz provide good instances of these
systems. Both researchers explicitly argued against metaphysical causalism since it is based on the
singularity of the causal chain and on the assumption of an absolute frame of reference. Instead, they
suggested substituting the notion of description for this kind of causal explanation.
The concept of description as a complete representation of the interdependence of phenomena is
then discussed in detail. I stress the impossibility of articulating a fundamental (i.e. unique and
ultimate) description of phenomena as an absolute ‘frame of reference’ for all the other descriptions:
indeed, a representation of an interdependent system can always be outlined from each of its points.
Consequently, one can obtain a number of complete descriptions, which concern the system in its
totality. I thus suggest the concept of ‘limit’ for description, because it enables one to simultaneously
speak about complete and alternative descriptions of the same system. Finally, the thesis attempts to
clarify the possibility of the mutual ‘transformation’ of descriptions. However, this does not imply that
one has to assume a principle of ‘a priori translatability’ or its ontological counterpart, i.e. a deeper,
underlying description – in sum, a fundament.

comes from this doctoral dissertation and represents a further development. It was nominated at the
Fernando Gil Prize for the Philosophy of Science (2010).
