Flipping the EFL Classroom

“Flipping the EFL Classroom”
led by Graziano Cecchinato and Helen Legge
moderated by Maria Norton
in collaboration with the British Council
and hosted by the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo
The purpose of the workshop is to (1) introduce participants to the theoretical and
methodological foundations of flipped instruction and its general implications for education,
(2)_present specific platforms and tools that can be employed in the flipped classroom, and
(3)_demonstrate specific methods for teaching English as a foreign language using the
principles of flipped instruction. An introductory talk and a practical workshop will serve as a
platform for a roundtable discussion during which all participants may ask questions and share
their own perspectives and experiences. The workshop will be of interest to language teachers and
subject teachers teaching in a foreign language in all contexts – including primary, secondary,
tertiary and life-long education, as well as private language schools and community programs.

Graziano Cecchinato è ricercatore in Pedagogia Sperimentale all'Università di Padova nell'ambito
delle tecnologie dell’educazione, docente di Psicopedagogia dei nuovi media e di Tecnologie
dell’e-learning presso la Scuola di Psicologia dell’Università di Padova e Direttore del Corso di
Perfezionamento Flipped classroom: Strategie e metodologie di innovazione didattica con i nuovi
media dell’Università di Padova. Negli ultimi anni ha adottato l'approccio flipped classroom per i
suoi insegnamenti e ha tenuto numerosi interventi in conferenze e workshop, nonché condotto
attività di formazione e sperimentazione sulla flipped classroom in alcune scuole.
Helen Legge is a teacher and young learner co-ordinator at the British Council, Milan, where she
teaches English to both young learners and adults. Helen has been teaching English for over 15
years in Italy and in the UK and has developed an interest in digital opportunities for learning over
the years, giving numerous in-house training sessions and teacher seminars on the topic. She
presented on online learning communities at the TESOL Italy conference in 2014 in Rome and is
presenting at the Digital ELT Ireland Conference run by the IATEFL Learning Technologies SIG in
October this year. In her workshop she will demonstrate her experience of using on-line learning
platforms with young learners (aged 11-18) to extend learning beyond the classroom and show
how platforms, such as Edmodo and other digital resources like Padlet, can provide opportunities
for learning at any age.
