For the second year in a row Project Harmony-Armenia implements the role of a GYSD National Leading Agency and initiates several projects, once more proving the fact that youth plays the most important role in serving the community and is an inseparable part of it. Giving a special importance to community service and youth involvement, every year Project Harmony becomes a part of the Global World and connects youth around a united idea. Every region of Armenia becomes one of the most active participants of GYSD contributing all their efforts and enthusiasm in creating a healthy environment for future generations. The region of Arm avir Realizing the role of youth in building the future, the region of Armavir joined the world celebrating the Global Youth Service Day. During GYSD implementation more than 120 young volunteers and 20 teachers from 8 ASCP network schools of Armavir region implemented a number of community events. As planned initially on April 21st and 22nd Armenia School Connectivity Program (ASCP) network Internet Computer Centers (ICCs) announced “Open Doors” for community representatives. More than 80 community members visited the ICCs and used the services of the ICC for free. The “Open Doors” were followed by cleaning events. 15 students, 3 teachers and 9 volunteers from community cleaned surroundings of their schools as well as gardens nearby Armavir Municipality and Armavir Regional Council. The region of Armavir brought together 220 participants and volunteers. Prepared by Naira Karmirshalyan Public Relations Coordinator Project Harmony-Armenia April 28, 2006 Every year the region of Ararat is actively involved in GYSD celebrations, however, this year GYSD included a wider scope. The largest Ararat GYSD event was called “Recognizing our historical values and realizing who is the volunteer”, which took place on April 21st in Pokr Vedi school. The event embodied 3 parts. It began with a talk show on “Volunteerism”, which was presented through a Marching group in front of Khor Virap monastery PowerPoint presentation. Teachers, pupils of 7 schools in Ararat region (Surenavan, Ararat #2, Vedi #3, Taperakan, Noyakert, Kakhtsrashen, Pokr Vedi), the director of Project Harmony-Armenia David Simpson, representatives of Project Harmony and “Harmony” Foundation, representatives of different NGOs, a Peace Corps volunteer Emily Brighton, and Junior Achievements Ararat branch representative Arthur Nazaryan expressed their opinions and attitudes towards “Volunteerism” proving it with their participation at walk tour to Khor Virap, which was being implemented within the framework of “Recognizing our historical values” project. After the talk show Pokr Vedi schoolchildren presented the guests a PowerPoint presentation telling about old Artashat and Khor Virap Monastery. The talk show was followed by planting the “Park of Friendship”. All the 7 school representatives and the guests were participating at that traditional event of Pokr Vedi school. Trees with names of schools, NGOs and International organizations have been planted, the most popular among which was the “Project Harmony” tree, which was the 3rd one in Pokr Vedi school yard. The first Project Harmony tree was planted in 2005 during GYSD celebration; the second one has been planted this year within the framework of “Cooperation Tree Planting” event, when school partner organizations planted individual trees. A walk towards Khor Virap Monastery Walk tour to Khor Virap followed the tree planting. Walk tour was lead by the school military service teacher Mr. Naghdalyan. Each school was walking with their own posters, and in spite of rainy weather all the pupils were happy to participate at walk tour. When reaching Khor Virap, Pokr Vedi schoolchildren guided the guests both in English and in Armenian. Prepared by Naira Karmirshalyan Public Relations Coordinator Project Harmony-Armenia April 28, 2006 Christianity in Armenia, the participants finished their mission with a joint photograph near the church. 80 students, 20 teachers and NGO members participated in this action. Another event worth mentioning within the framework of Ararat GYSD events was Artashat school number 4 tree planting event implemented within the framework of Disney Minnie Grant. Disney provided the grantees with 500 USD and 100 trees have been planted in the yard of Artashat School #4. 30 schoolchildren, 5 teachers, 10 local government and NGO representatives were present at the event, which took place on April 22. As a result, GYSD in Ararat reached its aim to create within the youth the ideas of being useful, the ideas of volunteerism and solidarity. The GYSD celebration in Ararat region gathered 145 participants. Region of Syunik It’s already 3 years that Syunik region participates in GYSD celebrations. On April 22-23 the Internet Computer Centers (ICC) of Syunik region in cooperation with schools and local government implemented “Open Doors” days and cleaning events within the framework of GYSD. Totally 2600 pupils, 200 teachers and 250 community members have participated in the events. The local “Sosi” TV made a material on the events and broadcasted them on TV. Here are some small stories telling about the Cleaning of school surroundings and land cultivation organized events. The cleaning events in Kapan special school #1, Goris School # 5, Sisian school #2 and Kornidzor secondary school embraced a wider scope. 1300 pupils and 80 teachers carried out cleaning works at school and nearby territories. During the works, community members were joining them encouraging the pupils with their activities. As a result districts of Kapan, Goris and Sisian, where more than 4500-5000 people were living have been cleaned from rubbish. Cleaning of the monuments The ICCs of Kapan #1, Goris # 3 and Uyts secondary schools organized “Open Doors” events, each of which lasted 2 hours. With the help of ICC staff nearly 35 community members used Internet resources, as well as got familiar with some useful links. Prepared by Naira Karmirshalyan Public Relations Coordinator Project Harmony-Armenia April 28, 2006 Artsvanik village secondary school implemented the school nearby territory land cultivation and cleaning of village monuments. 2 teachers were leading the 15 pupils to cleaning events. Cleaning activities and open doors have been implemented in other schools of the region too the essence of which was to teach community members to have a clean environment, as well as to promote their visit to ICCs and use modern technologies. The overall number of participants included 2850 people. Region of Tavus h Celebrating GYSD On the occasion of the 7th anniversary of the GYSD celebration in some of the ICCs of Tavush region were organized number of events: cleaning of the ICCs, “Open Doors” hours, tree planting etc. From seven to ten grades 200 students of Eghegnadzor School #3 participated in the ICC cleaning. The ICCs, the computers and the other equipments were cleaned, as well as the room was Tree Planting decorated with some plants and flowers. The “Open Doors” goes after the ICC cleaning, inviting many community members to use ICC free services. The beneficiaries of the initiatives became NGO representatives, soldiers, students, housewives, villagers and other community representatives. Only Noyemberyan School#1 hosted about 20 members: “Erevak:” NGO representative K. Nazaryan, Open Doors day for the community members “Ajakcutyun” NGO manager H. Azibekyan, ” Bridge of Hope” NGO representative H.Margaryan, “Lusatsir” NGO manager A. Zurabyan, “Nor Tsiatsan” publisher S.Martirosyan and others. The total amount of the beneficiaries made 85 people. On April 22, 70 trees were planted in Dilijan school #2, which were provided by the vice mayor of the town Armen Makaryan. The participants of the tree planting, the number of which makes 67 people, were the ten grade students and teachers of the above-mentioned schools. The ICC monitor of Dilijan School#2 Lamara Mantashyan, being a head of Dilijan Information Center, published a small article about all this in “Dilijan” weekly newspaper. The total number of GYSD participants is 352 people. Prepared by Naira Karmirshalyan Public Relations Coordinator Project Harmony-Armenia April 28, 2006 Region of Vayots Dzor Following the traditions the schools of Vayots Dzor region actively participated in GYSD celebrations. In order to organize attractive events Eghegnadzor School #3 cooperated with Canadian-Armenian businessman Mr. Terdjanyan, who now lives in Eghegnadzor. Mr. Terdjanyan provided the school with 1000 pine plants, 200 of which were planted around the school and 800 were planted in a small gorge near Eghegnadzor town. The volunteers were 3-10 grade students, teachers, 2 Peace Corps volunteers. The total number of participants was 350 volunteers. The Tree planting guests of the event were the journalists from “Aspekt” newspaper, which elucidated the event in the newspaper. The next tree planting was organized on April 21 in Vayk School #1. The City Council provided the school with 50 tree plants. 100 students, teachers, school management and 5 Peace Corps volunteers forestated school adjacent territory. On April 21 Jermuk School #2 joined GYSD celebration by organizing a tree planting. The City Council of Jermuk provided the school with 200 tree plants, which served in foresting the school nearby territory. 600 volunteers, including students, teachers, and community members participated in the tree planting. Tree planting was also organized in Vernashen School #1. 300 5-10 grade school students planted the 200 trees provided by the City Council. Areni secondary school organized an “Open Doors” day for ten veterans of the village. The war veterans explored the Internet, used ICC services, after which watched the movie devoted to the World War II. The event was attended also by the schoolchildren, who by expressing their token of respect presented the veterans with small presents and flowers. It already became a tradition in Malishka secondary school to celebrate the GYSD by organizing the clean up of monument to the missing soldier. On April 22, 2006 the school organized the sanitary cleaning of the monument. The overall number of participants in this region reached 1060 people. Region of Kotayk Keeping the traditions, the region of Kotayk got engaged in Global Youth Service Day by implementing different events. About 20 ICCs opened their doors for communities, offering free community services. Many of the schools took part in cleaning works. As always some village communities like Arzni, Dzorakhpur, Zovuni organized tree planting. But Abovyan School #10 was the most active in organizing tree planting and cleaning. Almost all the ICC of the region were cleaned and 100 tree plants were planted. The GYSD overall participation included 150 volunteers. Region of Lori The following events have been implemented in Lori region within the Global Youth Service Day. 23 ASCP schools of Lori region implemented cleaning activities in their schoolyards and nearby territories. Approximately 1000 students, more than 20 ICC site staff and many teachers participated in these events. The cleaning activities took place on April 22 almost in all Tree planting schools. Within GYSD framework 9 schools of the region implemented tree planting in their schoolyards and their nearby territories. The following schools participated in the tree planting event: Vanadzor secondary schools #1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 21, Stepanavan schools #1, #3 and Akhtala secondary schools. About 150 students took part in this activity. As a result 165 trees have been planted in the region. Besides the trees, flowers have also been planted in the schoolyards of some of the mentioned schools. On April 21, 2006 20 students of Vanadzor secondary school #5, an ICC site staff, a team coordinator and the school Principal Lyova Baroyan visited Vanadzor Elderly House. As a gift to the elderly people the students presented some entertainments: poetry, dancing, national songs, jokes, as well as a special cake, wine, pastry and flowers. Totally 1230 people participated in GYSD events in Lori region. Region of Aragatsotn The GYSD celebration in Ashtarak Fine Art School began a day earlier. The children started cleaning the ICCs on 20th of April. The next day the ICC announced “Open Doors” for parents. The aim of this initiative was to give a chance to the parents to get acquainted with the educational institutions where their children can continue their education in different fields of art. The ICC monitors Roma Shmavonyan and Astghik Grigoryan found out the necessary information through the Tree planting Internet and presented them to the parents. During the whole day 6 parents and 10 community members used the free services of the Internet Computer Center. Ashtarak College named after V. Petrosyan participated in GYSD through a tree planting. Five apricot trees were planted in the schoolyard. The leader of this initiative was Anahit Aghumyan, Deputy Director of the school. The participants were ten grade students and their teachers. On April 21 the principal of Karin School announced “Open Doors” day for the community members, which are represented by refugees. 22 community members came to use free ICC services. With the help of 16 schoolchildren, the refugees used the Internet, downloaded files, containing useful information about their rights and freedoms. “Open Doors” were continued also in R ia T aza secondary school. Participated 12 community members. The ICC provided different services, including printing, calendar design, paper writing, etc. Aragatsotn region gathered 500 volunteers. Region of Shirak The region of Shirak celebrated GYSD by organizing the following events and involving 34 regional schools. On April 22 all of the 34 schools implemented “Open Doors” day and ICC and adjacent territory cleaning. On April 22 the children from “Huys” (Hope) orphans house visited Gyumri School #4. At the school the schoolchildren organized a PowerPoint presentation and a concert for 20 orphan children. The event was supported by the school ICC monitor and by two schoolchildren, who entertained the guests with songs and poetry. The visitors of the event were also the director of the orphanage Mr. Markosyan, schoolteachers, community members, as well as the local “Gala” TV Company, which provided the full coverage of the event by the local television. The schoolchildren prepared an excellent reception for the orphan children, granting them with small presents, such as notebooks and pens. Project Harmony in its turn presented the Elderly people planting a tree children with T-shirts, carrying the logo of the organization. 15 students and 7 teachers participated. On the same day a tree planting project was implemented in Gyumri School #11. In the framework of the Disney Minnie Grant, recently received by the school and celebrating the Global Youth Service Day, the school initiated a tree planting, involving the youth into serving the community and outreaching the sense of volunteerism. The trees were planted by 80 students, 30 teachers, 20 elderly people, and other guests, including representatives from the Regional Council, director of Seismology center Sergey Nazaretyan, Leader of “Araks” psychological center NGO Alla Khachatryan. All in all 100 plants were planted around the school. After the tree planting the ICC monitor presented the guests with the PowerPoint presentation about ICC services, after Community members participate at the tree planting which was a small concert for the participants. The guests of the event were also journalists from “Gala” and “Shant” TV companies, who provided the full coverage of the occasion. The number of participants reached 2000. Region of Gegharkunik In spite of the rainy weather the planned activities of Global Youth Service Day celebration took place in Gegharkunik region. Nearly 2000 students participated in cleaning works and 500 students from 7th to 9th grades participated in tree planting. On April 22, ICC monitor and 3 teachers from Sevan School # 4 organized an interesting event – together with 8 students they visited the old and poor people of their community by taking some food with them. They met nearly 15 old people. The old people were very excited by the treatment of young generation. Cleaning school surroundings 26 students from Gavar Schools # 2 and # 8 helped 10 community members to clean the surroundings of Grigor Lusavorich and Mariam Astvatsatsin churches on April 22nd. On April 22nd at Gavar Schools # 9 and # 5 “Open Door” activities were organized: 5 volunteer school students helped the community members - soldiers, university students, housewives (24) to do research on the Internet on different topics, to open e-mails, etc. On April 21st, the students of Gavar School # 9 helped “Gavar Young Writers’ Club after Garegin Nzhdeh” to type and print their works. 10 students from 9th grade helped 8 young writers to use the ICC equipment for their needs. Total number of participants in this region counted 2610. Cleaning nearby territory Yerev an To celebrate the Global Youth Service Day 2006 Yerevan school #6 after H. Karapents decided to organize a tree and bush planting in the front yard of the school. In order to get funds the school decided to participate in the Disney Minnie Grant Program implemented by Youth Service America organization (YSA) and was a success since the school's project entitled "Green Environment – Healthy Generation" was approved for Tree planting funding. The project was aimed at raising the awareness of the target groups on topics related to ecological issues and environmental problems and their influence on people's health. Drawing on the playground Prepared by Naira Karmirshalyan Public Relations Coordinator Project Harmony-Armenia April 28, 2006 April 22, 2006, when the students of the school together with community members and several honorable guests participated in the tree and bush planting activity on the territory of the school. The event was assisted by Deputy Community Leader Mr. Samvel Margaryan, 10 school principals from Germany hosted by the school and Ms. Victoria Baghdasaryan, Yerevan Regional Program Coordinator of "Project Harmony" Organization. After the opening speech made by the principal of the school Ms. Ovsanna Babayan, Victoria Baghdasaryan continued by briefly talking about the concept of Global Youth Service Day and its mission. Then the tree and bush planting activity started, which was later on followed by a competition of crayon paintings. The 1st and 2nd graders of the school gathered at the school playground and using colorful chalks drew paintings related to peace, nature and health. According to our overall calculations, the project both directly and indirectly affected about 650 students of the school, 50 teachers and approximately 900 community members. The coverage of the event was provided by "Yerevan" TV station, and the material were shown in the frames of “Dproutyan Ghoghanjner” TV program. The students of Yerevan School #145 applied for a grant to “The Choice is Yours” NGO. The project “What Can I do for my school” won a small grant. All money was spent to plant greenery in the schoolyard. On the initiative of the active students of Secondary School #43 a work group was organized that planned activities with the community in the frames of the project «Global Warming and Prevention». The students prepared important materials using Internet resources, organized meetings with community. They prepared booklets that contained information about global warming, all the dangers connected with global warming and the ways of preventing The team of students working on the “Global the dangers. Warming” project The working group planned to organize a tree planting, that was considered to be the most important part of this project and aimed to involve the community members and other school students in the tree planting and cleaning works. The project was of a great success: about 400 people participated in the project, more than 50 trees were planted, the community and school area were cleaned. The Global Youth Service Day was celebrated in several other Yerevan schools as well. The Internet Computer Center Site Staff of several schools conducted presentations talking about GYSD, its importance and the engagement of youth in that action organized in the different parts of our globe. Among those schools were Yerevan Secondary School #105, Yerevan Special School #15 for Children with Hearing Disabilities, Republican Special Educational Complex #1 and Yerevan Special School #3. Overall, about 60 students took part in tree plantings, and approximately 80 students assisted the presentations on GYSD organized by the Site Staff of the ICCs. The schools of the "Kentron" community (Secondary schools #42, 24, 67, 114) carried out cleaning activities on the territories adjacent to their schools. About 160 students participated in this initiative. Other schools of the capital also presented active participation. 80 students and 20 teachers of Special School #5 did cleaning work and planted 20 trees around the school area. 500 people from Physical Mathematical Special School and the community took part in cleaning works Cleaning nearby territory and planting trees and tree planting. 200 people from Yerevan School #129 together with community members took part in the volunteer work. The students and teachers of Yerevan School #187, jointly with the community youth (200 people in total) carried out the cleaning of the school, the ICC, planted 30 trees at the school area, organized “Open Doors” for community students. Yerevan Schools #142, #177, #77, #76, #100, #149 organized “Open Doors”, cleaning of the ICC and the school surroundings and carried out a tree planting. In total in Armenia 13.538 participants contributed to the volunteerism and development of the community spirit, taking part at the events organized in the framework of the Global Youth Service Day. More that 2100 trees were planted, thus serving as evidence of youth enthusiasm and good will.
