Laurea (M.A.) in Political Sciences at University of Turin. As the result of my study I wrote two
short theses, one in Economics refereed by Prof. S. Lombardini and one in International Relations
refereed by Prof. G. Casacchi di Amelia, followed by a research thesis in economic development
studies about the development and location problems of manufacturing industry in the region of
Saint Paul, Brazil, refereed by Prof. F. Gribaudi.
III. Summary of Professional skills and expertise.
My professional skills and expertise include:
a) university teaching, basic and applied research, and policy advisory in development studies, urban and
regional planning;
b) project planning and management;
c) administration and management in the University of Turin and Banco Ambrosiano;
d) organisation of scientific and political congress, workshops, festivals, etc.
My languages knowledge include: Italian (Mother Tang), English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and
German.
Major research interest, both in Developed and in Developing countries, are:
1) Economic structure and dynamics of regional systems, at different scales, focusing on: the main
development problems, constraints and potentialities; interactions with the local environment
(social, institutional, natural) and external conditions; issues of regional sustainable
development policy and land-use planning; population structure and dynamics, household
economy, human resources; market centres and retail distribution, location strategies.
2) Enterprises’ growth and development, focusing on: external conditions (from the environment
of their local production systems to the global market) and the external information and
knowledge needed by firms for working and especially for strategic decision making; definition
of the location strategies and policies.
3) Politics and policy problems of international trade and economic development, with focus on
“North/South” relationship and international co-operation for sustainable development.
4) Tourism development studies, strategic planning and management.
Among my involvement in research, research management, policy advisory and collaborative
works, I can mention the following collaborations, with
the U. N. Centre for Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD), as an expert in the
United Nations Workshop on Creative Financing for Environmentally Sound Technologies, Belèm
do Parà (Brazil) 2nd -7th December 1990. In this workshop I was the Rapporteur of the Financial
Working Group (chaired by E. Rothschild);

Regarding university administration and management, and organisational works, I can mention the
followings:
 I had to supervise as Faculty Dean, about 150 teaching, research and administrative staff,
and about 2000 students.
 As Secretary of a local party from 1979 to 1985, I managed the political activities of the
party. Acting as its international relations officer, I was also responsible for promoting and
realising political initiatives related to Italian foreign relations, disarmament, peace and
development, human rights, etc.
 As President of the Piedmont Branch of the Italian Association of Geography Teachers
(more than 250 members), form 1975 to 1979, I was responsible for the organisation of many
conferences and other programs.
 As a member of the Study Group on Trade Globalisation of the International Geographical
Union, I participate in the planning and organisation of activity programs.
 I coordinated for the Faculty of Economics of the Eastern Piedmont University: from 1999
to 2008, the Degree Course on “Business Economics” implemented in Casale Monferrato since
1999;
and, from 2001 to 2004, the new Degree Course on “Tourism Promotion and
Management “ implemented in Novara.
 I promote and organize since 2001 the “Tourism Days” , an annual Italian meeting of
researchers, decision-makers and entrepreneurs in tourism
 I promoted the foundation of the Geoprogress NGO in 2011
 I organised, as Rector Delegate of Asmara University (Eritrea), an Italian university
network to support and assist the development of that University;
 I worked as Faculty Dean and Member of the Commission “Development and Planning” of
the University of Turin, to build a new University in Piedmont (Italy); and as a Member of the
“Research Commission” of the University of Turin , than as Head of the Department of Business
and Regional Studies of the new University of Eastern Piedmont, to the reorganisation and
promotion of research activities.
 I elaborated and implemented , as International Relation Officer of the University of Turin,
new co-operation projects with some universities in Developing Countries (e.g. University of
Asmara, Eritrea; University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; University of Douala, Cameroon ).
 I co-ordinated inquiries about professional profiles aimed at elaborating reorganisation
proposals of the curricula of Italian University studies, in order to make them comparable with
the curricula of other European Countries, and above all consistent with the labour market’s
evolution and with the social needs brought about by the new challenges of the contemporary
world.
 Since the beginning of my academic life, I have collaborated with Italian trade unions,
voluntary associations (ACLI, CGIL and CISL) and political parties at regional, national and
international level.
 I collaborated with the IPALMO (Istituto per l'America-Latina e il Medio-Oriente), the
CESPI (Centro Studi di Politica Internazionale), the IILA (Istituto Italo-Latino Americano), the
Istituto Italiano per l'Africa (now ISIAO) and other similar governmental and non-governmental
advisory institutions, in the preparation of political proposals and laws for peace, development
and environmental security, since the end of 1970's.
For my experience in research management and policy, in 1996 I was the Italian Candidate,
proposed by the Italian Government, for the place of Rector of the United Nations University
(UNU) in Tokyo (Japan).
