PRESENTAZIONEISTITUZIONALE//INSTITUTIONALPRESENTATION
La mostra di Arianna Carossa dà il via alla nuova programmazione di
eventi in Casa Jorn che l’Associazione “Amici di Casa Jorn” ha
immaginatoeorganizzatoinsiemeall’AmministrazioneComunale;un
piccolo anticipo quindi, di quello che potrete vivere durante tutta
l’estate,fraesposizioni,momentiteatralieconferenze.
Siamo particolarmente onorati di iniziare questo nuovo percorso
culturale con un’artista di affermato talento, che lavora fra l’Italia e
New York ormai da tempo e che sia proprio l’artista ad aver avuto il
desiderio di confrontarsi con un luogo così carico di simboli e
contaminazionicomeCasaJorn.
SonoimpazientedivedereillavorocheAriannahapensatoeprodotto
proprio ad Albissola, certa che saprà inserirsi con rispetto, ma anche
concoraggio,nelcomplicatomastimolantecontestoscelto.
ThesoloexhibitionofAriannaCarossaopensthe2016eventsprogramofthe
Jorn House Museum which has been designed and planned by the
Association Friends of the Jorn House Museum in partnership with the
Municipality of Albissola Marina. It is therefore a preview of the theatre
shows,conferencesandexhibitionsthatyouwillbelivingthissummerinthe
Museum.
We are extremely honored to start this new cultural journey with such a
renowned artist, whose career is established since years between Italy and
NewYork.ItisalsoagreatpleasureforusthatAriannaCarossaherselfhad
thedesiretomeasureherartwithaplacerichinsymbolsandinfluencesas
Jorn’sHouse.

L’intervento di Arianna Carossa (Genova 1973) apre il primo anno di programmazione culturale della
Casa Museo Jorn e costituisce la prima mostra temporanea di un’artista vivente ad essere ospitata
stabilmenteinquestospaziodallafinedeirestauri(2014).
QuellodiAriannaCarossa(genoveseresidenteaNewYork)inrealtàèunritorno;unritornoallaterra
(l’argilla, ma anche Albisola) con cui diversi anni fa aveva affrontato un’importante fase del proprio
lavoro.Cambianoinomideilaboratoriedegliartigiani(ieriladittaPiraleilceramistaMarcoTortarolo,
oggilaG.Mazzotti1903,conlostessoassistentediuntempo,EnnioSirello)malatensioneallaricerca
in situ e all’intervento site specific sono gli stessi (anzi più forti) di un tempo. In mezzo ci sono state
sperimentazioni sugli oggetti e sul linguaggio, sulla loro sparizione o ri-proposizione in ambienti
eterogenei.Lagrandetradizionedeldesignmoderno(daLenciaGioPonti)hainparticolarefornitoa
Carossalamateriaperinterrogarelanostrapercezionedelreale,dell’operad’arte,delsuocontestoe
dellasuafenomenologia.Duevoltel’anno(inestateeininverno),perunpaiodimesi,Ariannalascia
NewYorketornaaGenova.Nehabisognoperdareritmoaipensierieossigenoaiprogetti.Talvolta,
comeinquestocaso,capitacheun’ideabalenatatempoprimamaturinell’incontroconunluogoadatto
aospitarlaefarlacrescere.TullioMazzotti,proprietariodell’impresadiceramicheartigianaliG.Mazzotti
1903diAlbissolaMarina,hasupportatoAriannaCarossainquestoprogetto,mettendoadisposizione
dell’artista spazi, materiali e competenze del proprio laboratorio. Arianna Carossa ha voluto calarsi
nell’attuale ambiente di Albissola, per porre nuovamente a confronto la tradizione e la storia della
ceramica d’arte con la propria personale esperienza. Da questo confronto nascono opere ibride e
promiscue,scultoreeedeffimere,concettualiemateriche,createappositamenteperglispazidellacasa
di Jorn e del suo studio. La vita e l’opera di Asger Jorn sono legate profondamente al nome delle
CeramicheMazzotti,dovefraglianni’40e’50iduefratelli(futuristi)Tulliod’AlbisolaeToridoMazzotti
hannorilanciatolaproduzioneceramicagrazieallacollaborazioneconartistiinternazionali.
Per le sue installazioni Arianna Carossa utilizza oggetti trovati, caratterizzati da una forte identità
preesistente; spesso si tratta di opere artigianali o di design assemblate in accostamenti “sporchi”,
assolutamente anticonvenzionali, che mettono in risalto il vissuto (fisico, psicologico, ambientale…)
dell’oggetto,dell’operad’artemaanchedell’artista.

Jorn,haorganizzatoquestamostragrazieallacollaborazioneinattoconilComunediAlbissolaMarina
perlagestionedellospazio.

ThesoloshowbyAriannaCarossa(Genoa1973)launchesthefirstyearofprogrammingattheJornHouseMuseum.Itisalso
thefirsttemporaryexhibitonofalivingartistheldinthisvenuesincetheendofitsrestoration(2014).
ForAriannaCarossa(livingandworkinginNewYork)it’slikereturningtotheuseofclayandtothetownofAlbisola,where
severalyearsagoshespentalotoftimeworking.Whilethenamesofceramicmanufacturersandartisanschange(yesterday
itwasthePiralcompany,andthepotterMarcoTortarlo,todayitistheG.Mazzotti1903company,withthesameassistant,
Ennio Sirello) her passion for both research in situ and site specific work are the same as ever (actually stronger). In the
meanwhile, Arianna has experimented languages and objects focusing on their disappearance or manipulation in unusual
environments.Thegreatmoderndesigntradition(fromLencitoGioPonti)providedCarossawiththetoolstoquestionour
perceptionofwhatisreal,ofartworks,oftheircontextandphenomenology.Twiceayear(insummertimeandwinter),fora
coupleofmonths,AriannaleavesNewYorkandcomesbacktoGenoa.Sheneedstodosotobalancetherythm
ofherthoughtsandgiveherprojectsokygen.Soemetimes,astoday,ithappensthatanidea,risenyearsbefore,takesshape
throughtheencounterwithaplace,suitableforhostingitandmakingitgrow.InAlbissolaMarina,TullioMazzotti,headof
theceramicshandicraftcompanyG.Mazzotti1903,supportedAriannaCarossa'sproject,makingavailabletoherthespaces,
materialsandexpertisesofhisworkshop.AriannaCarossachosetoimmerseonceagainintheenvironmentofAlbissolato
carry out an exchange between the historical tradition of art ceramics and her own experience. During such an intense
researchmanyworks-hybridandpromiscuous,sculpturalandephemeral,conceptualand‘materic’-conceivedfortherooms
of Jorn’s house and studio, came to birth. Asger Jorn’s life and work were deeply connected to the name of the Mazzotti
pottery; here, between the 40s and the 50s, the two (futurists) brothers Tullio d’Albisola and Torido Mazzotti relaunched
ceramic production thanks to the cooperation with international artists. In her installations Arianna Carossa uses objets
trouvés with a strong identity; they are usually works of craft and design, assembled into raw combinations, absolutely
unconventional,thatstressthepast(physical,psychological,environmental)oftheobject,theartworkandtheartistaswell.
TheAssociationFriendsoftheJornHouseMuseum,foundedin2015withtheaimofpromotingandenhancingtheAsger
JornHouseMuseum,organizedthisexhibitiononthepremisesoftheagreementwiththeMunicipalityofAlbissolaMarina
fortheco-managementofthevenue.

“Nelmiolavorocercosempredientrareinrelazioneconl’ambienteincuisonochiamataarealizzareil
progetto.Questaèlacaratteristicapiùfortedellamiapratica,chemispingeacercaresituazioniincuila
stessaprogettazionesiainrelazioneconciòchemistaintorno.Anchelasceltadellostudioincuilavoro
cadeintalelogica:lostudiocheabitodiventamaterialesucuiintervenireeilsuocontestoambientale
costituisce una parte fondamentale della struttura. Non solo la zona in cui si trova lo studio è
importante ma anche la destinazione d’uso o sociale del luogo; falegnameria, centro costruzioni edili,
mobilificio,centroagricolo,cantinadivini:questisonosoloalcunideiluoghidovehoavutounostudio.
Possocosìentrareinrelazioneconpersoneestraneealmondodell’artemadallecompetenzespecifiche
in altri settori. Per me cambiare studio significa cambiare comunità e modalità espressive, significa
trovareriferimentidirettialluogo.
IlavorichepresentoaCasaJorncercanodiintegrarsiall’ambienteeaglispazi,mantenendonellostesso
tempounapropriaautonomiarispettoalcontesto.Losviluppodeilavoriinceramicaevolvecomeuna
parte(anzitanteparti)diinstallazionifattesoprattuttoconimobili:mobiliconpartidiceramica,oggetti
variristrutturatiattraversolaceramica.Misonoconcentratasoprattuttosull’usodell’oro,immaginando
comodiniconcassettichedebordanoceramicad'oro,sediechediventanotroniperoggettiinformidi
ceramicad'oro,ecosìvia…”

“IalwaystrytoconnectmyworktotheenvironmentwhereIdeveloptheproject.Thisisthestrongestfeatureofmypractice
anditdrivesmetolookforsituationswherethedesignitselfisrelatedwitheverythingaroundme.Thechoiceofthestudio
followsthisprinciple.ThestudiowhereIdwellbecomesthematerialonwhichIworkanditscontextbecomespartofthe
structureitself.Moreover,notonlytheareawherethestudioislocatedbutoftenthepurposeoftheplaceisveryimportant
too;carpentry,constructionhub,furniturefactory,agriculturalcenter,winecellar:thesearejustsomeoftheplacesIusedas
studios. This way I can get in touch with people outside the art world, but with specific expertise in other fields. For me,
changingstudiomeanschangingcommunityandwayofexpression,itmeansfindingconnectionswiththeplace.TheworksI
amgoingtoshowattheJornHouseMuseumtrytoconnecttotheenvironmentandthespace,keepingatthesametimea
sort of independence from the context. Ceramic works evolve as a part (actually many parts) of installations made of
furnishings: furniture with parts in ceramics, objects restored with ceramics. I focus especially on gold, imagining gold
ceramicsflowingoutofcabinetdrawers,orchairsbecomingthronesasshapelessgoldenceramicobjects,andsoon…”
Arianna Carossa è nata nel 1973 a Genova, dove ha vissuto e lavorato nei primi anni della sua
carriera.Nel2011sitrasferisceaNewYorkedaalloraproseguelasuaricercaprincipalmentenegliStati
Uniti. L’oggetto, inteso come materia prima da cui partire per una reinvenzione che affonda le radici
nell’Arte Povera, è al centro della sua ricerca. Materiali comuni e pezzi d’arredamento, ceramiche e
quadri, vengono assemblati in maniera del tutto personale, innescando una riflessione su tematiche
universali. Oggi, senza perdere di vista l’oggetto, l’attenzione dell’artista si è spostata sulla perdita
dell’immaginario causata da una realtà completamente svelata. Dopo la pubblicazione del libro The
aestheticofmydisappearance(MOMA/Ps1,2014),Carossadàvitaadazioniperformativechepongono
lo spettatore in una condizione di familiarità e allo stesso tempo di disagio nei confronti dell’oggetto
artistico.
AriannaCarossawasbornin1973inGenoa,whereshelivedandworkedatthebeginningofhercareer.Since2011shelives
inNewYork,carryingoutherresearchmainlyintheUSA.Thecoreofherworkistheobject,consideredasastartingpoint
that she reinventsand develops drawing from the poetics of Arte Povera. Through an absolutely personal approach, she
assembles common materials and home furnishings, ceramics and paintings, reflecting on universal themes. Currently,
withoutoverlookingtheobject,shefocusesherattentiononthelossoftheimaginarycausedbyatotallyrevealedreality.
After having published her book The aesthetic of my disappearance (MOMA/PS1, 2014), Carossa acts performances which
maketheviewerfeelatthesametimefamiliaranduncomfortablewiththeartisticobject.

parte (insieme al Centro Esposizioni, al
Lungomare degli Artisti e alla Fornace Alba
Docilia) del MuDA Museo Diffuso Albisola:
progettodisviluppocuratodall’Archiviod’Arte
Contemporanea dell’Università di Genova per
contodelDIRAAS(DipartimentodiItalianistica,
Antichistica,Romanistica,ArtieSpettacolo).
Insieme al suo amico e assistente Umberto
Gambetta, Asger Jorn (Vejrum 1914-Aarhus
1973) creò e trasformò questo luogo a partire
dal1957.Primadimorire,Jornlasciòineredità
al Comune di Albissola Marina la casa, lo
studio,ilgiardino,perchédiventasseunmuseo
pubblico. Jorn donò al Comune anche una
collezione di ceramiche, oggi conservate nel
Centro Esposizioni del MuDA insieme alle
coeve opere di altri artisti che vissero e
lavorarono ad Albissola, come Fontana, Lam,
Crippa, Scanavino, Fabbri, Sassu e molti altri.

centenario della nascita di Asger Jorn, la Casa
Museo Asger Jorn di Albissola Marina è stata
ufficialmenteapertaalpubbliconell’ambitodel
progettoespositivoAsgerJorn.OltrelaForma.

sperimentaleperlacogestionedellospaziodapartedelComunediAlbissolaMarina(proprietariodelsito)edella
neonataAssociazioneAmicidiCasaJorn.
AMICI DI CASA JORN è un’Associazione di Promozione Sociale nata nel 2015 dal sodalizio di professionisti nei
campi della ricerca, della gestione e della promozione del patrimonio artistico e culturale. Lo scopo
dell’Associazione è lavorare, canalizzare e gestire risorse ed energie per valorizzare Casa Museo Jorn,

DiffusoAlbisola-,curatedbytheArchiveofContemporaryArtoftheUniversityofGenoaonbehalfofDIRAAS(Departmentof
Italian Literature, Antiquities, Romanistics, Arts and Theatre). Since 1957, along with his friend and assistant Umberto
Gambetta,AsgerJorn(Vejrum1914–Aarhus1973)createdandtransformedthisplace.Beforehisdeath,Jornbequeathed
hishouse,studioandgardentotheMunicipalityofAlbissolaMarina,inordertomakeitapublicmuseum.Jorndonatedto
theMunicipalityalsoacollectionofhisceramics,whicharenowhousedattheMuDAExhibtitionCentre,alongwithworksby
Fontana, Lam, Crippa, Scanavino, Fabbri, Sassu and other 20th century artists who lived and worked in Albisola.

In spring 2014, to mark the centenary of Asger Jorn's birth, the Asger Jorn House Museum in Albissola Marina officially
openedtothepublic,hostingtheexhibitionAsgerJorn.TheFormandBeyond.Thereafter,Jorn’sHousebeganitsnewpublic
life,madeofculturalevents,researchprojects,internationalmeetings,visitsofartists,curators,journalistsandpeoplefrom
every part of Europe. In the summer of 2015 an experimental cooperation project started between the Municipality of
AlbissolaMarina(towhichthisplacebelongs)andthenewlyfoundedAssociationFriendsofJornHouseMuseum,aimedat
managinginpartnershiptheMuseum.
TheFRIENDSOFTHEJORNHOUSEMUSEUMisaNonProfitAssociationestablishedin2015byagroupofprofessionalsinthe
fieldsofculturalresearch,managementandpromotion.TheaimoftheAssociationistoenhancetheJornHouseMuseumby
promotingit,improvingitsfruitionandcontributinginmakingitalivelyandcreativeplacewheretoenjoycontemporaryart,
