Much has been achieved in fire-resistant glazing and there is now plenty of opportunity to explore fire-safe transparent solutions in both modern and traditional building design. F Pilkington Pyrostop™, innovating product Interior partition of Pilkington Pyrostop™, Commerzbank, Frankfurt Parete divisoria interna in Pilkington Pyrostop™, Commerzbank, Francoforte © D.R. Wewnêtrzna Òcianka, wykonana ze szk¬a Pilkington Pyrostop™, Commerzbank, Frankfurt The first high performance fire-resistant glass to meet the insulation with integrity performance criteria for passive fire protection materials in buildings was first developed and introduced in Europe over 20 years ago, originally at 30 and 90 minutes performance ratings. Its name was Pyrostop. The story since then has been of continuous development in the application of fire-resistant glasses as a group, linked with an evolution in the design of non-domestic buildings that has progressively and increasingly exploited the particular benefits of glass. Pilkington Pyrostop™ has played a leading role in this development. The drive has come, on the one side, from the architect’s desire to produce aesthetically pleasing but functional buildings, combined with a need to manage and control, where possible, the internal building environment for the comfort and safety of users. On the other side, has been the important role of fire brigades and authorities in striving to improve fire safety standards. In between, fire-resistant glass suppliers in cooperation with specialists in glazing systems have worked to bring forward solutions to achieve both the fire resistance demands and the required architectural specification. The result is a wider use of fire-resistant glass, in larger and larger areas, in ever more challenging situations. Applications in Pilkington Pyrostop™ started with fireresistant glass panels in fire doors and internal walls. Today a full range of fire-resistant glass applications can be seen in large glazing sizes, from glass doors to transparent fire walls to ceiling and roof constructions, corridors, floors and facades. The broad scope of application can be seen across Europe in a variety of different building types – or at least can be if you know where to look. The fact is that it is not immediately straightforward by means of a cursory look to distinguish framed Pilkington Pyrostop™ and Pilkington Pyrodur™ from standard float glasses. Pilkington Pyrostop™ has been specifically developed to blend in optically with other glazing products, illustrated by the use of special, high transmission Pilkington Optiwhite™ in the thicker products in the range, which makes Pilkington Pyrostop™ unique in its field. The high tech base is not obvious and the only clue is the product stamp, which carries the well known Pilkington Pyrostop™ or Pilkington Pyrodur™ brand quality mark. Pilkington, as the world’s leading manufacturer of fireresistant glass, has invested more than two decades of research, testing, cooperative system development and glazing specification design in building up its core expertise in this line of products. Its leading insulation and integrity fire-resistant glass Pilkington Pyrostop™, and its sister integrity product Pilkington Pyrodur™, have an extensive portfolio of applications since the first major project at Aachen’s hospital in 1981. Pilkington Pyrostop™ from this first project has recently been deglazed as a result of building refurbishment. After almost 19 years in use, it has been fire tested in an independent laboratory and succeeded in achieving the stated 90 minutes insulation fire performance with ease. The optimum state-of-the-art Although not the most recent project to be completed, Sir Norman Foster’s Reichstag represents the optimum stateof-the-art where today’s latest fire-protection technology has been stretched to achieve a stunning and symbolic landmark project in a rejuvenated modern Berlin. Pilkington Pyrodur™ has been used extensively throughout, notably in the glass wall surrounding the chamber – in individual fire-resistant glass pane sizes up to 1.35m by 2.70m in a framing system by MBB with stylish narrow steel profiles, over a distance of 80m to a height of 16m – and the press lobby and glass ceiling above the centre of the chamber where the specification is particularly high performance, including specially tested protection against projectile impact along with acoustic and thermal insulation. 8/ gl@ss in building © D.R. It provides an insulation with integrity barrier, available in formulations for 30, 60, 90, 120 and now 180 minutes tested insulation performance in appropriate framing systems. Pilkington Pyrostop™ is also listed in the USA, where resistance to a hose stream forms part of the listing requirement. Pilkington Pyrodur™ is rated for integrity performance at 30 and 60 minutes although it also functions effectively in blocking radiant heat, which provides a particular advantage over those clear integrity glasses which remain transparent during a fire, so letting through significantly more heat. Both Pilkington Pyrostop™ and Pilkington Pyrodur™ can be used together with the full range of other Pilkington glasses to achieve a variety of multi-functional glazing combinations. It is now possible to use fire-resistant glass systems from the facade right through to the core of the building. Fireresistant glass like Pilkington Pyrostop™ and Pilkington Pyrodur™ literally make it possible to create an open design, based on transparency, visibility and natural lighting, whilst meeting the exacting demands of fire protection compartmentation required in meeting fire safety specifications. This means that architects and builders can produce aesthetically-rich, individually designed glass architecture. New solutions are continually being identified in the process of producing attractive, comfortable and firesafe building designs, without compromising design flexibility. It is a process of quite evolution rather than revolution, but the effects on our buildings can be dramatic nevertheless. ■ gl@ss in building B¬yskotliwe odpowiedzi na paløce problemy P rzez ostatnie 20 lat stopniowo opracowywano rœÂnego rodzaju szk¬a ognioochronne i ognioodporne. Jimmy McCann, Sales and Marketing Manager at Pilkington Architectural charts the success of the company and its emphasis upon advanced technology solutions. S Willis Faber building, Ipswich Edificio Wilis Faber, Ipswich © D.R. Budynek Willis Faber w Ipswich The use of glass and glazing within construction is a familiar concept, with the material enabling light ingress and adding aesthetic appeal to a project. However, glass is a brittle material and unless it is used as part of a total engineered glazing system, it cannot offer maximum structural stability and performance functionality. To this end, Pilkington Architectural is not merely a glass processor but avidly promotes and advances the concept of total control within the glazing system process. As one of the few companies in the world to develop, design, manufacture and supply glazing systems, the emphasis is firmly upon system control, with the integration of individual elements into a whole engineering package. Historically, the development of Pilkington glass technology began over 40 years ago with the formulation of frameless door and entrance systems. Consistent and com- 20 / prehensive research and development led to the development of suspended glass assemblies a decade later. This evolution of glazing technology has been achieved by the heavy investment by the company into R & D and testing facilities, to ameliorate the properties of glass when interfaced with structural systems, to provide a functional design medium. An excellent example of this symbiotic relationship is demonstrated in the construction of BMW’s new headquarters and showroom in Milan where the stringent specification required the building to reflect the company’s corporate characteristics, state of the art technology and aesthetic appeal. This meant that no support structure could be visible below a height of 3.5m, with the glass unimpaired by tinting to allow uninterrupted and clear views of the cars inside. A minimalist approach was the key to the design brief, and a modified version of the Planar™ frameless glazing system was the solution. The desired effect was achieved through the development of more than 20 new types of fittings, including fittings to splice the vertical mullions together preventing buckling, fittings allowing movement between roof and ground, and fittings to support the facade where installation of a mullion at the corner position was not an option. For visual appearance, 12mm Pilkington Optiwhite™ glass was specified, which has a low iron content, resulting in clearer glass with no distortion tint and a high light transmission, in this case up to 91%. The project which was undertaken by architects, Kenzo Tange is a testament to the versatility of both products and Pilkington expertise to provide bespoke solutions to specific problems. A key component in the success and development of the technology behind total glazing systems, is the testing procedure. The Planar™ system is thoroughly tested to the most exacting standards both in the UK by Taywood Engineering and the BSI, and abroad by eminent companies including. Construction Research Laboratories in America. Independent testing on specific system performance (seismic, wind loading, etc), is a standard available procedure. For instance, the BMW project required intensive and comprehensive testing on the structural wind loading capabilities of the dual mullions that were utilised in place of the more usual single mullions. Pilkington Architectural, as a system supplier as well as a manufacturer, proposes and supports solutions rather than mere products, and uses advanced design and engineering technology to provide the correct specification for every application. ■ gl@ss in building © D.R. Cell-phone operating center chiara visione delle macchine poste all’interno dell’ edificio. ■ Mullion trials for the BMW building 22 / Prova di crociere per l’edificio BMW Testy Âeber szklanych przeznaczonych dla budynku BMW gl@ss in building Pilkington Architectural © D.R. T hirty years of experience in the implementation of aluminum facades and the manufacture of aluminum frame windows have confirmed the position of Ouest Alu among the leading companies in its sector. For the two business segments, which have in common the fact that they both include working with glass, Ouest Alu devotes a large budget to R&D and has filed numerous European patents. André Liebot, Chairman and Chief Executive of Ouest Alu, defines his trade as a ‘fenestrator’: ‘We produce for and sell to professionals’ and as a facade maker: ‘we design, manufacture and erect for promoters, design offices and private and public architectural organizations’. Performance and quality of lifestyle ‘Yesterday, we expected a window to protect from the cold, allow light in and let us look out. Today we expect a window to have thermal (heat and cold) and acoustic performances and aesthetic appeal’. In response to the market, the company has developed the K-Line: innovative windows with heat insulation properties and two-tone frames. ‘We owe the quality of current windows to the quality of the glass - which accounts for 80% of the window unit! The improvement in quality goes together with lifestyle quality. In other words, the market is ready to invest in enhanced comfort and well-being’. While today’s windows exhibit very high performances, A. Liebot considers that the use of gas in doubleglazing and the development of win28 / The headquarters of Air-France dow unit automation will contribute to enhancing performance. Sede sociale di Air-France Siedziba Air France (electrochromic glass, darkening, coloring, etc.) will contribute to the progress of facades. Each facade is a prototype Ouest Alu and Pilkington ‘In close liaison with the architect, we contribute to the definition and design of the project, develop the product and erect it within strict deadlines’. A facade is a compromise between the building's image, its performance and its cost. Accordingly, Ouest Alu plays a decisive advisory role with respect to the image, quality and comfort of a building. For the company, ‘Each facade is a prototype’. In the future, architects, automation and technical management of the building, together with the development of specific glazing products ‘Pilkington has developed a range of high-performance products that reflect market expectations and regulatory requirements,’ stressed A. Liebot. ‘But the leading qualities of Pilkington are the company’s proximity, reaction rate and the quality of the relationship it maintains with Ouest Alu’. A case in point: Pilkington adapted quickly and effectively to Ouest Alu’s requirements in the context of construction of the company’s new plant.
