Words of Gratitude for Recognition of Continuous Support and Dedication towards the Teaching of
the Italian Language, Presented by Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana – April 25, 2015
Director Domenico Servello, Organizing Committee Chair Sam Ciccolini, fellow award recipients, fellow
lovers of Italy and the Italian language, family, friends, colleagues and partners in Italian language
education,
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks. Centro Scuola, now under Domenico’s
leadership, continues to lead the way, promoting Italian language learning and cultural exchange
opportunities for students from kindergarten to university. Together with its partners in the TCDSB and
YCDSB, Centro Scuola provides enriching experiences and opportunities where learning comes not only
through sound pedagogy in language, culture and history, but also through hands on, real-life
experiences such as cooking, art, music, dance, drama, sport, and of course travel. I am very proud of
the work of Centro Scuola and its partnership with the school boards. This partnership is built on the
advocacy of the importance of language acquisition, not just the Italian language, but any second or
third language. I wish to congratulate everyone who is involved in this partnership and advocacy for the
tremendous work you put forth in its promotion! I am very proud of this collaboration and the role it
plays in promoting the love of learning and teaching the Italian Language!!
My sincere thanks to the members of the Awards Committee, and to all those who supported my
nomination!! And thank you very much, Rosaria Cavaliere, Italian Instructor at St. Fidelis Catholic
School, for your nomination and generous testimony in my regard!
A special thank you to my beautiful family which was present at the Italy-amo Gala: my loving and
supporting wife, Angela, our wonderful sons, Salvatore and Gianluca, and Angela’s dear parents Filippo
and Gerrarda Guglielmo. It gives me great joy that they were there to celebrate the evening together
with all of us.
I am greatly honoured, deeply humbled and truly overwhelmed by this recognition! I feel this way
strongly because I know the truth. The truth is, we gathered to honour and recognize the contributions
of so many who, over the past 40 years, have worked diligently to promote and teach Italian. And the
truth is, I feel that I am more of a by-product of this, a result of this great mission. I too was a student of
Italian language, on Saturdays at St. Margaret Mary Catholic School in Woodbridge, and eventually
during the extended school day. Like so many, in me was nourished a love and respect of our Italian
language and heritage, by those who brought enthusiasm, dedication and care to the classroom. The
Italian language programmes brought a sense of legitimacy to what was happening in the home, the
upbringing that our immigrant parents were trying so hard to provide us in their new reality, while
hanging on to their traditions and values and the identity they found in their language spoken.
Today, we know studying Italian goes well beyond a sense of pride; we know there is great value in
studying a second or third language as it strongly supports the cognitive development of children.
Strong ties between Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana and the International Languages programme create
incredible opportunities – such as with the performances of I Parafoné, or the display of I Presepi – for
students to gain first-hand authentic learning experiences in history, language and culture. This
relationship highlights the benefits and importance of learning any second or third language, let alone
bringing one closer to one’s own culture, traditions, and identity. Acquiring the skills of a second or
third language in today’s global economies and citizenship undoubtedly goes a long with in securing
positive, fruitful relationships at home and abroad.
And the truth is, all of this has made it quite easy for me to do what I do. When I became an educator, it
was only natural for me to be an advocate of International Language Programmes, supporting cultural
events/days, spelling, writing and artistic competitions, fashion shows, cafés, expositions, plays,
performances, whatever it may be to promote the importance of second and third language acquisition,
as well as a pride and respect for one’s heritage. Now, as a school administrator, and as any of my
principal colleagues would do, whenever an International Languages Instructor comes to me with a new
initiative, my response is simple… how can I support you?
I have been honored and blessed to be able to work with such teachers and promoters of Italian, such as
Signora Rosaria Cavaliere, who not only promotes the Italian language, but works hard to be a strong
participant in the life of the school by coaching our school’s chess team, for example. Or Signora
Rosanna Senatore, who goes well beyond the duties of the classroom when she spends hours with
students, teaching them to knit dozens of scarves that would be donated to the homeless in Toronto.
Or Signora Enza D’Urzo – who has always inspired me by her spiritual guidance – teaching children
Italian, yes, but first about love, respect, kindness and compassion, and that Jesus loves them no matter
what! These, are our heroes! Because they are much more than just teachers of Italian, they are
teachers of humanity.
I am no more deserving of this than the next person. And the truth is that it is only because of the hard
work, initiative, innovation, leadership, enthusiasm, and support of so many great individuals, both
personally and professionally, through their mentorship, guidance, collaboration, faith, trust and
friendship that I find myself with this acknowledgement. So please, allow me to share this
recognition with all promoters and lovers of all things Italian -- all of you -- who work tirelessly for the
betterment, well-being and achievement of all our students! I am grateful and proud to be partners and
colleagues with you in this our shared mission!
And remember: I know the truth. And the truth is that I have probably gone on for too long. So, to
Domenico Servello, to Sam Ciccolini, to Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana and to everyone, may you
accept my humble expressions of gratitude and thanks.

premi, colleghi amanti d’Italia e della lingua italiana, famiglia, amici, colleghi e partner nell’istruzione
della lingua italiana,
Vorrei cogliere l'occasione per porgere i miei più sinceri ringraziamenti. Centro Scuola, adesso, sotto il
leadership di Domenico, continua ad essere all'avanguardia, per promuovere l'apprendimento della
lingua italiana e di scambio culturale. Insieme con i suoi partner nel TCDSB e YCDSB, Centro Scuola
fornisce l’esperienze e l’opportunità di apprendimento non solo attraverso una sana pedagogia per la
lingua, la cultura e la storia, ma anche attraverso esperienze reali, come la cucina, l'arte, la musica, la
danza, il teatro, e lo sport. Sono molto orgoglioso del lavoro del Centro Scuola e la sua collaborazione
con i consigli scolastici. Questa collaborazione è costruita sul patrocinio dell'importanza dell'acquisizione
della lingua, non solo la lingua italiana, ma una seconda o terza lingua. Mi congratulo con tutti che
partecipano al partnership del lavoro che si mette avanti per la sua promozione! Sono molto orgoglioso
di questa collaborazione e il ruolo che essa svolge nel promuovere l'amore per l'apprendimento e
l'insegnamento della lingua italiana!!
Il mio sincero ringraziamento ai membri del Direttivo, e a tutti coloro che hanno sostenuto la mia
candidatura!! E la ringrazio molto, Rosaria Cavaliere, per il tuo generoso omaggio nei miei confronti!
Un ringraziamento speciale alla mia bellissima famiglia che era presente alla Gala Italy-amo: mia moglie
amorevole e solidale, Angela, i nostri meravigliosi figli, Salvatore e Gianluca e i loro cari nonni Filippo e
Gerarda Guglielmo. È per me una grande gioia che erano presente per celebrare insieme con tutti noi.
Sono molto onorato, profondamente umiliato da questo riconoscimento! Mi sento così perché so qual’e’
la verità. La verità è che ci siamo riuniti per onorare e riconoscere il contributo di tanti che, negli ultimi 40
anni, hanno lavorato intensamente per promuovere e insegnare l'italiano. E la verità è che io mi sono
sentito un prodotto di questo, un risultato di questa grande missione. Anch'io sono stato uno studente di
lingua italiana, il sabato a St. Margaret Mary Catholic School in Woodbridge, ed eventualmente
quotidianamente durante i miei anni scolastici. Come tanti, in me si era nutrita un’amore e un rispetto
per la nostra lingua Italiana, da coloro che hanno portato entusiasmo, dedizione e cura per la classe. I
programmi in lingua italiana hanno dato un senso di legittimità a ciò che accade in casa, l'educazione
che i nostri genitori immigrati cercavano da realizzare nella loro nuova realtà, mentre si aggrappavano
alle tradizioni e i valori, e l’identità che trovavano nella loro lingua parlata.
Oggi, sappiamo che studiare l'italiano va ben oltre un senso di orgoglio; sappiamo che c'è un grande
valore studiare una seconda o terza lingua siccome sostiene lo sviluppo cognitivo dei bambini. Forti
legami tra Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana ed i programma delle lingue internazionali crea delle
opportunita’ incredibili - ad esempio, con le prestazioni dei Parafoné, o dei Presepi - per gli studenti
d’acquisire l’esperienze autentiche di storia, di lingua e di cultura. Questa relazione evidenzia i vantaggi e
l'importanza d’imparare una seconda o terza lingua, per non parlare ci avvicina alla nostra cultura, alle
nostre tradizioni e identità. Acquisire le competenze di una seconda o terza lingua nelle nostre economie
globali e della cittadinanza va sicuramente a lungo nel garantire rapporti fruttuosi in patria e all'estero.
E la verità è che tutto questo si e reso molto più facile per me di fare ciò che faccio. Quando sono
diventato insegnante, era del tutto naturale per me essere un avvocato di lingua internazionale,
procurando appoggio ai eventi culturali, concorsi d’ortografia, scrittura artistica e arte, sfilate di moda,
caffè, esposizioni, spettacoli, esibizioni, qualunque esso sia per promuovere l'importanza di una lingua
seconda o terza, nonché un orgoglio e il rispetto del patrimonio culturale. Ora, come preside, e come
tutti i miei colleghi, quando un istruttore Internazionale di Lingue viene a me con una nuova iniziativa, la
mia risposta è semplice… come posso aiutarvi?
Mi sono sentito fiero di essere in grado di lavorare con insegnanti e promotori della lingua italiana, come
la Signora Rosaria Cavaliere, che non solo promuove la lingua italiana, ma lavora sodo per essere un
forte partecipante alla vita della scuola, come allenatore della squadra di chess, per esempio. O la
Signora Rosanna Senatore, che va ben al di là dei compiti della classe quando dedica centinaia di ore con
gli studenti, insegnando loro a maglia decine di sciarpe che sono stati donati al senzatetto di Toronto. O
la Signora Enza D'Urzo – che mi ha sempre ispirato come una guida spirituale – insegnando ai bambini la
lingua italiana, sì, ma prima di tutto l'amore, il rispetto, la gentilezza e la compassione, e che Gesù ama
tutti non importa che cosa! Questi sono i nostri eroi! Perché sono molto più dei semplici insegnanti di
italiano, sono maestri dell'umanità.
Non sono più meritevoli di questo rispetto al prossimo. E la verità è che è solo a causa del duro lavoro, lo
spirito d'iniziativa, innovazione, leadership, entusiasmo, e il sostegno di molte persone, sia a livello
personale che professionale, attraverso le loro conoscenze, la guida, collaborazione, fede, fiducia e
amicizia che mi trovo con questo riconoscimento. Quindi, per favore, mi permetta di condividere questo
riconoscimento con tutti i promotori e gli amanti di tutte le cose italiane -- tutti -- che lavorano
instancabilmente per il miglioramento, il benessere e il raggiungimento di tutti i nostri studenti! Sono
grato e orgoglioso di essere partner e colleghi con voi in questa nostra missione condivisa!
E ricorda: conosco la verità. E la verità è che probabilmente sono andato troppo a lungo. Così, Domenico,
Sam, Centro Scuola, tutti, possiate accettare le mie umili espressioni di gratitudine e di ringraziamento.
