SPAZIO 22 è felice di annunciare la sua prima collaborazione con Ronchini Gallery, che presenterà
all’interno della sede espositiva di Viale Sabotino 22, i lavori di Berndnaut Smilde.
Berndnaut Smilde, nato a Groningen nel 1978, in Olanda, nel suo lavoro realizza una sintesi
multidisciplinare tra fotografia, installazioni, performance e scultura.
Smilde è diventato famoso per la serie Nimbus: delle impressionanti immagini ‘reali’ di nuvole
sospese in stanze vuote create utilizzando una ‘macchina per il fumo’. Smilde calcola con esattezza e
precisione la temperatura e l’ umidità al fine di produrre delle nuvole per giusto il tempo necessario
occorrente per fotografarle. L’opera possiede una qualità effimera unica e la fotografia è in grado
di catturarla proprio per un brevissimo istante prima che la nuvola si dissolva nella stessa maniera
misteriosa in cui si era formata.
Il lavoro di Smilde si fonda su uno stato in divenire dell’essere, in bilico tra formazione e distruzione.
La sua opera si concentra spesso su situazioni che hanno a che fare con la dualità. La serie delle
nuvole intitolata Nimbus definisce sì il termine scientifico della formazione della nuvola portatrice
di pioggia ma al contempo sta a significare un’aura che circonda qualcosa o qualcuno. Infatti, nella
mitologia classica Nimbus rappresenta una nuvola luminosa che circonda una divinità quando essa
è sulla Terra.
Operando in maniera in situ specifico, l’artista è influenzato e reagisce all’architettura e alla
storia del luogo. I luoghi scelti da Smilde recentemente sono tutti spazi museali. Per l’opera
Nimbus Portland Place, 2015, Smilde ha prodotto una nuvola all’interno di una dimora
progettata da Robert Adam di grande atmosfera e per questo motivo spesso utilizzata per
girare film.
In altre opere della serie Nimbus, ad esempio Nimbus Thor 2014 e Nimbus Duquan Himalayas
Museums 2015 , egli utilizza ulteriormente gli spazi come piedistallo per la sua stessa opera.
Le nuvole vengono a collidere con lo stato originale dello spazio e la sua funzione temporanea in
maniera violenta. Lo stesso Smilde chiarisce che:” se gli oggetti che occupano edifici e spazi vengono tolti o ricollocati si pone una una forte enfasi sui nudi elementi architettonici che definiscono lo
spazio in se. È proprio da questo spazio che io inizio a lavorare. “
Il corpus artistico di ICONOCLOUDS nato da una collaborazione con Harper’s Bazaar USA e
Simon Procter, giustappone le nuvole fabbricate da Smilde a spazi con star della moda come Karl
Lagerfeld, Dolce & Gabbana, Donatella Versace and Alber Elbaz. Le nuvole mantengono delle
proporzioni umane e le fotografie sono considerate come veri ritratti dove un’altra personalità, la
nuvola stessa è ingrandita e posta vicino allo stilista.

Nota biografica sull’artista
Berndnaut Smilde (nato a Groningen nel 1978) vive e lavora ad Amsterdam. Si è laureato presso la
Minerva Academy nel 2001 e si è specializzato presso il Frank Mohr Insitute, nel 2005, in Olanda.
Egli ha esposto nei Paesi Bassi e anche a Toronto, Taipei, Istanbul, Dublin, Paris, London, Rotterdam
e San Francisco. Nel 2013, inaugurò la sua prima personale su vasta scala negli Stati Uniti presso
Land of Tomorrow a Louisville, Kentucky.
Curò un’esposizione presso il Bonnefantenmuseum a Maastricht dove mostrò una sua personale
selezione di opere di una collezione privata in aperto dialogo con la propria opera. L’opera di Smilde’s sono esposte sia alla galleria Saatchi sia presso le collezioni presenti allo Smithsonian. Su Smilde molto è stato scritto nelle pubblicazioni d’arte. Inoltre le sue serie Nimbus sono state riconosciute
come una delle “Top Ten Inventions of 2012”.
Oltre che dal TIME Magazin, il suo lavoro ha ricevuto attenzione anche dalla BBC e dalla Reuters.
Egli creò delle opere d’arte aventi come soggetto Karl Lagerfeld, Donatella Versace, Dolce & Gabbana e Alber Elbaz per Harper’s Bazaar U.S., edizione settembre 2013. È stato artista residente presso
l’Irish Museum of Modern Art di Dublino nel 2008.

SPAZIO 22 is happy to announce its first collaboration with Ronchini gallery. In our exhibition room
of Viale Sabotino 22, SPAZIO 22 will be presenting the works by Berndnaut Smilde.
Berndaut Smilde (b. 1978, Groningen) makes multidisciplinary work through the synthesis of photography, installation, performance and sculpture.
Smilde has become known for his Nimbus series comprised of striking images of ‘real’ clouds suspended within empty rooms. Using a fog machine, he carefully adjusts the temperature and humidity to
produce clouds just long enough to be photographed. There is a unique ephemeral aspect to the
work where the photograph captures a very brief moment before the cloud dissipates, disappearing
as mysteriously as it was formed
Smilde’s work centres on an impermanent state of being between construction and deconstruction
and is often about situations that deal with duality. The cloud series titled Nimbus, is the name for a
rain cloud, but can also mean an aura surrounding something or someone. In classical mythology, a
“nimbus” is a shining cloud that surrounds a deity when he or she is on Earth.
Working in a site-specific way, the artist reacts to the architecture or history of a location. The recent
locations Smilde has chosen to work in are all in some way connected to exhibition spaces. For Nimbus Portland Place (ed.), 2015, he produced a cloud inside an atmospheric Robert Adam-designed
mansion, often used as a location for film and advertising shoots, including, The King’s Speech by
director Tom Hooper.
In further Nimbus works like Nimbus Thor, 2014 and Nimbus Duguan Himalayas Museum, 2015,
the spaces function as a plinth for the work; the clouds create a strong collision between the original
state of the space and it’s actual function. Smilde explains:
‘If you take away or reposition objects that occupy buildings and spaces, there is a stronger emphasis
on the bare architectural elements that define a space. That’s where I start working from.’
The body of works ICONOCLOUDS, a collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar USA and Simon Procter,
juxtaposes Smilde’s manufactured cloud spaces with fashion luminaires Karl Lagerfeld, Dolce &
Gabbana, Donatella Versace and Alber Elbaz. The clouds keep a human proportion as the pictures
are treated as a portrait, where another personality, the cloud, is implemented next to the designers

About the artist
Berndnaut Smilde (b. 1978, Groningen) lives and works in Amsterdam. He has exhibited across
The Netherlands and also in Toronto, Taipei, Istanbul, Dublin, Paris, London, Rotterdam and San
Francisco. In 2013, he opened his first large scale solo exhibition in the US at Land of Tomorrow in
Louisville, Kentucky, and guest curated a show at the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht where he
exhibited his personal choice of works from the collection in a dialogue with his own work. Smilde’s
work resides in both the Saatchi and the Smithsonian collections among others. Smilde has been
written about extensively in art publications; additionally his Nimbus series was recognised by TIME
Magazine as one of the “Top Ten Inventions of 2012”and was covered by the BBC and Reuters. He
created works that featured Karl Lagerfeld, Donatella Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Alber Elbaz
for the Harper’s Bazaar U.S.’s September 2013 issue. He was a resident artist at the Irish Museum of
Modern Art, Dublin in 2008. He received his BA in 2001 from the Minerva Academy and his MA in
2005 from the Frank Mohr Institute, both in The Netherlands.
