A natural gift to enrich spirit and body. Dopo l’uso, i contenitori in PET vengono normalmente gettati dai consumatori e diventano rifiuti, contribuendo all’inquinamento delle nostre città. The commitment to saving power and water, the use of clean energy, eco-sustainable yarns and fabrics, Oecotex certified dyeing and finishing methods, and the recycling of plastic materials, have given birth to a new era in textile production, one with more product value and greater responsibility PAGE N° 16 - FOREGROUND GLOBAL MARKET MARKETING RECOGNITION Going back to the ABC of marketing. This crisis, a time for redefining models and strategies, presents itself as the most appropriate moment to redefine the foundations of marketing. Often enough, in fact, the term itself is misused or, at the very least, not fully understood. Meaning, that is, that it’s not usually associated with its enhancing aspects, for example, as definer of a proper company strategy, and is in fact often trivialized. So much so that in common usage, the term has become synonymous with shadiness, of a lack of transparency towards consumers. As if “marketing” meant trying to circumvent the market, rather than a way of approaching the market. As Giampaolo Fabris, Professor of Consumer Sociology at San Raffaele University in Milan, pointed out: “even in company jargon it is common to hear individuals referring to marketing innovation intended as the exact opposite to substantial innovation, which is considered as a generator of real benefits. A sort of fake innovation: smoke and mirrors”. It is therefore important to start from scratch, from the foundations of the field. Philip Kotler, marketing guru and author of renowned books like “Marketing Management”, defines marketing as a tool for understanding, creating, communicating and adding value. Hence it is a system that individuals or groups of individuals can use to obtain what they want and need by using creativity and the exchange of value. Marketing is based on the concept of “needs”, states in which individuals perceive they are lacking something. Naturally, needs are not something invented by marketing but rather a part of the human condition, which we all experience on a daily basis. They can be physical, like for example the need for food, clothing, heating etc., or social, like the need for belonging or for knowledge or self-fulfilment. Shaped by our reference culture and by individual personalities, these needs become wants, which in turn result in behaviours like buying. It is important to stress how marketing should not be confused with promotional activities, with advertisement or sales. These activities are part of the process, but they are not the sum of its parts. However, often enough companies pay for marketing and receive advertising. This is akin to paying for a whole tree and getting only one of its branches. Even if it’s a beautiful branch, full of flowers, it’s still just one part of the tree. Kotler himself recently stated, in an interview with Marshall Goldsmith for BusinessWeek, “Many marketers have had it easy, getting paid tons of cash for creating a 30 second advertisement spot, without having to show any kind of proof of their sales boost or profitability. Advertisement was a matter of faith. The idea was to get a large slice of exposure so that the brand name would get etched in the back of the mind of consumers; in the hopes that the message would be something distinctive and that consumers searching for this type of differentiation would automatically drift towards your brand. My theory is that only one out of ten advertising campaigns, perhaps only one out of twenty, translates into financial profitability. This means the average agency only has one chance in ten or twenty that its advertisement campaign will develop a message that will truly motivate and stay in people’s minds”. In fact, a winning marketing strategy answers two main questions: 1) at which marketing objective are we aiming? Meaning: who are our customers? 2) Why should they believe our offer? Therefore, marketing strategy defines which customers to serve and how to create value for our target market. Obviously, this strategy must be implemented, must be defined through an action plan that must cover all aspects including price, point of sale, campaigns etc. The company must be able to create an alluring offer that can satisfy a need, set a price for it, make it readily available to its customers and must be able to communicate with them, listen to them, address their concerns and highlight the advantages of the offer. An interesting example is La Rinascente’s recent repositioning. In spring 2005 the brand was purchased by a group of investors that included Investitori Associati, Pirelli Re, Deutsche Bank and the founding family’s heir, Maurizio Borletti, who decided to start an upgrading process. The aim was to transform La Rinascente, starting with the flagship store in Milan’s Piazza Duomo, with the “made in Italy” display and with the most renowned international brands. In other words, the idea was to make it a shopping landmark, synonymous with ideas and novelty: a place where things happen. The strategy, penned by Managing Director Vittorio Radice, was structured around 5 main areas. The first, redefining the offer, was focused around 9 product areas and included prestigious fashion, design and lifestyle brands. The second was restructuring the computer and logistic systems. In particular, a centralized warehouse was created to ensure the most efficient time management system and thus speedy deliveries. Third, the complete redesign of the piazza Duomo store in Milan. The restructuring was carried out by a group of architects, which included the Cibic & Partners studio and Anglo-Iranian interior decorators India Mandavi. Fourth, the remaining stores were rationalized and modernized. For example, stores in Bari and Bergamo were closed, while the one in Padua was completely restructured. Fifth, the focus was shifted from self service to complete and professional customer service assistance. Assisted sales, in fact, were in line with the current mood of the stores. Let’s not forget that, throughout the years, the marketing approach has gradually changed. In the seventies and eighties the predominant principle was “splitting up the market”. At the start of the seventies, experts in this evolving field started highlighting the differences between customer needs. Thus, they devised the possibility of dividing the market into groups of buyers that shared specific requirements in performance, design, service, price and so forth. The theory was based on the idea that modifying the product and suiting it to the characteristics required by each market segment would make it possible to come closer to what consumers want without sacrificing the scaled economy of industrial manufacture. Furthermore, identifying cultural consumption of the various segments allowed their media usage to be determined, like for example the TV shows they watched or the magazines they read. This allowed informing consumers of products and services through the most suitable media. This paradigm served as the foundation for the financial development of many a firm up to around the mid-nineties. Then, two new elements appeared that called for a complete revision and restructuring of “classic” marketing principles. First of all, the realization that competition between companies had caused most markets to stall. In other words, all firms used the same market segmenting and advertising principles and therefore they were all using the same 64 tools to compete for their share of consumers. Huge investments were leading to minimal market gains and resulting in highly dubious costbenefit ratios. The second element was the widespread use of a new communication network that was different from all other media due to its interactivity and personalization characteristics: the internet. This led to a new approach, based on personalizing the relationship between firm and customer. So-called one on one marketing is used both in “business to business”, meaning sales to other firms, as well as in business aimed at consumers. An example? Interactive websites where customers (both active and potential) register and provide a series of data, which ranges from their personal particulars and profession to information on their tastes and buying habits. Based on this information the website “transforms” itself, from its home page, into what the customer needs and/or wants. The new global market challenges Italian firms to redefine themselves, to explain their philosophy, their product line, their manufacturing means and their distribution, but above all else to redefine that constant thrill that will lead customers to pick them out of the competition. PAGE N° 20 - FOCUS TEXTILE AND HEALTH CREATING AWARENESS AMONG CONSUMERS The unification of a globalized market led the textile industry to discover its vulnerability due to rules that were either never written or never applied. The different legal regulations that exist in different countries, as in the case of China, for example, which has jeopardized the health of final consumers by using finishing and dyeing techniques that are not always compliant with health standards and especially not with environmental ones. This has resulted in the establishment, throughout Europe, of various bodies and associations devoted to protecting consumers. The Associazione Tessile e Salute (Health and Textile Association) is a national, nonprofit, unbiased network uniting all interested parties at the various levels, aimed at evolution of the textile sector by safeguarding the health of final consumers. Born from the innovative idea of interrelating two fields (textile and health specifically) that, although they both touch the “skins” of citizens on a daily basis, are still distant from each other; the goal is to promote and facilitate free interaction between four components: industry, production and distribution; health; consumers; and research. The project involves industrialists, physicians, operators and consumers, working together to guarantee the safety and transparency of textile products, all the while creating awareness among final consumers regarding the material and virtual ethical, social and environmental values inherent in textile production. President Franco Piunti, Manager of the prevention department for local health body 12 in Biella, furthermore, also represents the national association of hygienists. The Administrative Board includes SMI, Assofibre, Federchimica, Confederazione Nazionale Artigiani (National Confederation for Craftsmen), Confartigianato, Unione Nazionale delle Camere di Commercio (National Union of Chambers of Commerce), local health body 12 in Biella, Città Studi. It can also count on a network that includes, among others: Turin’s Politecnico, the CNR-ISMAC (the Institute for Macromolecular Studies) of Biella, the San Gallicano dermatological institute of Rome, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, SIDAPA (Italian Society of Allergological Occupational and Environmental Dermatology) and the leading national medical scientific associations. Finally, it can count on the help of national consumers’ associations, which is evidence of the commitment towards final consumers. The Association is involved at various interrelated levels, especially in making textile products safe, which means equipping Italy with compatible tools at the Health, Industry and Consumers’ Associations level that will make it possible to prevent the distribution of textile products that can release substances that could jeopardize the health of consumers. Research support: the Association, well aware of the real and implied needs of citizens, can offer companies “ideas” for innovating their textile production and for the development of new business ventures. Textile firms need to develop complex, hightech, multifunctional products, and Associazione Tessile e Salute is firmly convinced that to this end Chemistry and Physics need to merge with Biology. The complex nature of the related projects means that a fundamental pillar in the textile development of the future will be networks that allow companies, research and training bodies, professionals and consumers’ associations to work synergistically, and Associazione Tessile e Salute is a perfect example of the above. Research has included studies by an interdisciplinary team of biologists, physicians and engineers within an environmental chamber where fabrics are tested for their performance and effects on the skin. The association has organized six International Conventions on the topic of the most advanced textile research, acting as a round table for research, production and scientific health associations to draw up and carry out collaborative work and research projects to find answers to human requirements. In what concerns creating awareness among consumers, the Association will be increasingly involved in shifting models towards consumption patterns that favour high-tech products that represent no health hazards and have been manufactured according to environmental and sustainability standards. Several courses for Consumers’ Associations, entitled “How to recognize the quality and function of textile products and their potential health hazards”, have been carried out with the sponsorship of the Piedmont Region. The REACH Regulations will result in a series of changes within the textile, clothing and hosiery sectors, which will range from the manufacturing methods to the products themselves; this will also mean that the competent authorities will have a defined series of efficient controls to permit the monitoring of imported and/or national products. Not to mention that currently there is no regulation that ensures equal competitive and consumer safeguarding conditions that applies to European manufacturers and importers of finished products alike. Data from the Osservatorio Nazionale delle Dermatiti da contatto (National Observatory for Contact Dermatitis) have stressed how, in most cases, pathologies can be traced back to substances no longer marketed in Europe, but which are found in imported articles. So as to correct this situation and help the pertinent authorities to ensure that all parties involved at all stages of the production chain are complying with the Regulations, the Associazione Tessile e Salute, the only European organization with a systemic approach approved by the Ministry of Health, has already implemented a series of safeguarding and monitoring “tools” in collaboration with Sidapa and 9 clinics throughout the country. The goal is to work on the problems and to transform them into an opportunity to protect human health, the environment and high quality production, to “export” REACH so that even competitors from outside of the European Union will have to compete in fairness while safeguarding health through regulations for the manufacture that protect consumers and the environment. PAGE N° 24 - NOVELTIES POMPEA - SILVER & MILK Thanks to President Adriano Rodella’s vision, Pompea made technological innovation its selling point, exporting the values of Made in Italy products around the globe. From hosiery to underwear, the firm, throughout the course of the years, has been able to constantly address market requirements, anticipating trends and styles. The first in Italy to work with microfibers and to manufacture seamless underwear and to distribute their products through mass retailing, not to mention to develop an innovative educational program aimed at their consumers. The firm’s strategy throughout the years has been supported by a strong investments policy, by the development of a consolidated logistics structure and by a powerful sales network. It is one of the leading brands for the swimsuit division and best seller in women’s underwear and hosiery in Russia. Currently, Pompea has manufacturing plants in Italy in Medole and Asola, in the Mantua district, as well as abroad in Tunisia, Serbia, Greece and Spain, with 1,838 staff members: 719 in Italy and 1,119 abroad. The company has 160 underwear machineries and approximately 1,000 hosiery machineries manufacturing 7 million dozens of pairs of stocking and nylons, with 13 million underwear garments and 250 thousand dozens of pairs of men’s socks. 2008 closed with a turnover above 140 million euro, 50% of which in Italy and the rest abroad, especially in Russia, Serbia and the Ukraine. Pompea has experienced a constant growth of its turnover thanks to their focus on innovation and research, and to the firm’s production, which has high quality standards and characteristics, which has now finally led to the Silver & Milk Pompea projects. In the past few years, technological evolutions and the growing requirements for comfortable underwear by sports enthusiasts have led Pompea to achieve such high quality product standards, which will now be incorporated in the new collections. The new Silver line was developed in microfiber that has been enriched with silver ion particles, an innovative patented fabric that has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency and by the Food and Drug Administration, which uses the properties of silver ion particles to offer bacteriostatic protection, providing freshness, hygiene and health. Fulgar, a European leader in the manufacture and distribution of innovative yarns, has been a vital Partner in the development of this new collection, in what concerns the use of the Lycra@ elastomer, which grants garments the added value of long lasting elasticity, and for the silver ion yarn, for its antistatic, thermoregulating and anti-microbial properties, which are vital characteristics that distinguish Silver underwear. This collection will follow simple lines and minimalist cuts in white, black and skin colors, and will completely replace, coming February, the microfiber collection that is currently on the market. It will be marketed through mass retailing with the backup of an important TV ad campaign; the image and packaging were conceived by Milan’s Armando Testa agency. This will be followed by the no less important launch of the Milk line, an underwear collection designed in natural, biodegradable micromodal fabric that is rich in real milk proteins, developed with bioengineering techniques and special spinning that results in an innovative antifungal yarn that has antibacterial, hydrating, hypoallergenic and ecological properties. This is part of Pompea’s plans for the well being of its customers, and especially for an eco-friendly, eco-sustainable production, with the use of specific materials and the careful choice of partners like Fulgar, which only uses renewable energy sources. PAGE N° 26 - COLLECTIONS PARAH - BRAND IDENTITY Living in the city results in a daily onslaught of visual advertising, where confusion, overlap and excess reign and influence the consumers’ way of dressing, their behaviors and their product choices. Designers must interpret and reformulate these trends and choices and consumer attitudes and are forced to incorporate these influences while retaining his/her stylistic identity by keeping an open mind while being specifically selective, so as to constantly innovate with each and every collection. A professional designer needs to have the appropriate level of professional training and must use adequate work tools, but that’s not all: the single most vital driving force behind each and every collection is enthusiasm. Lucia Branduardi, Parah’s fashion designer for now over 20 years, and group’s creative staff lead, tells us about the road she had to travel for her dreams to come true, of her sartorial fairy tale, of her love for knitting, which started at an early age, when she would sew clothes for her dolls and those of her friends, and of her pursuit for comfort in that world of fabrics, needles, machinery, colored thread, where she has always felt at home. Her career highlights how, in addition to formal academic training in arts and fashion design schools, the creative process behind a fashion project requires a dynamic process in and of itself “there are two stages to designing and structuring a collection: a static stage and a dynamic stage. During the first stage, creativity must be channeled and suited to a fixed scheme that is determined by current trends and market requirements as well as by the brand’s own personality. During the second stage, a designer’s own experience and impressions start to gradually and constantly evolve, spurred by the events that thrill us “. Lucia Branduardi explained how now more than ever before, aside from the large investments Parah makes yearly in research and development, it is people who really make the grade, and it is to them that Parah owes its brand’s success; throughout the years, its designers have been able to be interpret tastes and styles while maintaining a clear brand identity in a market that is growingly saturated and crowded with mass-produced garment lines. “Parah’s Noir line is the pride of the Group’s collections, with elegant and sophisticated lines that identify with an evolved femininity, incorporating new moods and changes in tastes. 2010 will witness the launch of underwear and casual-wear project Parah Online. An easy-way philosophy that incorporates various garments that can be easily combined with each other thanks to their uncomplicated nature that still retains the brand’s unique DNA essentials.” With an eye on creativity and a hand on the pulse of modern men and women, Lucia Branduardi has, for the past decades, been able to assimilate and interpret modern trends, transforming them into successful collections that back their originality, femininity, refinement and thrill with the quality control and traceability guarantees that only the Made in Italy label can provide. PAGE N° 46 - PRODUCTS SIL PARIS ICE SUPPORTING MADE IN ITALY With the support of Italy’s leading firms in the lingerie sector, ICE will organize and promote collective participation at the Salon International de la Lingerie (the International Lingerie Fair), which will be held in Paris from January 23rd through 25th. The Italian collective and its marketing will stand out thanks to the Inteamintimo Italia logo. With 17 offices in Italy and other 116 throughout 88 Countries worldwide, the Istituto nazionale per il Commercio Estero (National Institute for Foreign Trade) is in charge of promoting Italy’s commercial relations abroad. With special attention to the requirements of small to medium sized businesses, ICE, within the framework of the Ministry for Economic Development’s policies, designs and develop the marketing activities. We spoke withTextiles-Clothing Line Manager Cinzia Di Dio about the project’s origins, its duration, and its goals. PLUS - How did ICE’s initiative for lingerie firms at the Paris SIL fair originate? Since 2005 ICE has been supporting Italian firms that participated at the fair. We focused on promoting the Made in Italy image through marketing activities that included, for example, fashion shows, fashion trend areas or fashion entertainment events. We decided to modify the nature of our intervention as a direct consequence of the market’s current economic condition, which has resulted in a shift in the priorities and investments of firms. In fact, it was the firms themselves, especially through Consorzio Italian Lingerie (Italian Lingerie Association, which represents a large number of firms), that asked ICE to provide more solid support. Thus, the Institute decided to organize a collective that united all Italian participants. PLUS - In what form will you participate? The 2010 instalment of this event will be held at the third and fourth pavilion at Porte de Versailles. The third pavilion will focus on nightwear, while the fourth one on corsetry. Therefore Italy’s representatives will be subdivided into two groups, one for pyjamas and related articles, while the other, within the Designer section usually reserved for the best Italian brands, for corsetry. The idea is to set up an Italian village within the fair, with the stands arranged all around a central plaza, where the ICE stand will be located. The area will stand out due to its unique design arranged by the fair specifically for the collective, and by the “Inteamintimo Italia” logo, a brand that already distinguished Italy’s previous participations at the fair. Thanks to the government support, participants will also have a financial benefit because of the collective nature of the project, which will reduce the costs of renting decorated stands. PLUS - Which firms can participate and how? All Italian firms already participating in the event or newcomers to it can participate, as long as their production falls within the scope accepted by Eurovet. This, the first ICE collective, has united 55 brands, spanning an area of over 1000 m2. PLUS - What are the initiative’s goals and strategies? Setting up a collective Italian-exclusive area within the main fair will definitely act as a strong catalyst for commercial synergy, which will result in an increase in the number of business opportunities. The collective presence, with large brands and small-scale niche productions working side by side, will boost everyone’s marketing presence. Being part of a collective means being represented by a joint image, and also means mutually avoiding direct competition. PLUS - Will this be a pilot project or a long-term operation? Our aim is to continue this type of initiative in support of Italian firms, but we remain accessible, as usual, to requests and comments made by the firms themselves, as we are also responsive to the market itself and its changes. The main element behind our work is in fact the bond of trust that ICE establishes with the firms, which allows us to set up our projects even for the medium term, and to realistically appraise results through the collaboration of all those involved. PLUS - What are the marketing and visibility projects for the initiative? The most important visibility boost for Italian firms will be the fashion-entertainment mini-show that will be repeated twice daily at the ICE stands at the centre of the Italian area in halls 3 and 4. This small entertainment event to present Italian garments to the public will follow the lines of what was done in 2008 and 2009. The ICE stands will also work as a service point for Italian firms, providing technical and commercial assistance, and will also be equipped with a relax area for the customers. A printed catalogue advertising all participating firms is also planned. Everything is aimed at solidifying the collective image of quality of Made in Italy, while still highlighting the unique characteristics of each firm. In Paris, ICE is joined by ILE, the Italian Lingerie Export Association. Established in 1997, it is the first and only organization promoting and representing Italian underwear and beachwear. “We want to pay tribute to and highlight the excellence of Italian firms, and we were thus strongly behind the idea of creating two ‘Italian villages’ in halls 3 and 4, so as to gather all firms under a common ‘roof’ and to strengthen the collective image. Thanks to ICE, which organized, arranged and financed part of the village, Italian firms can attend SIL 2010 reducing their expenses while retaining a high-quality image” stated Francesco Macchi of Delmar, President of the association “Our aim is to help Italian firms that want to participate in promotional activities abroad and bring operators in the field closer together. No longer competitors but rather co-stars on a shared global market. To be the voice of the sector’s requirements and interests”. 12 firms of the ILE Associations will be in Paris. This January, ICE will bring to SIL brands like Annette Lingerie, Moretta, Elly-Carezza, Gaetano Cazzola – Luxory, Grazia ‘LLiani, Christies-Naory-Les Copains, Alba-Adely-Stefany-Sublime, Cotton Club-RCrescentini, Ritratti-Swan Original, Verdiani-Rebecca&Bros-RKids, Chiara D’Angelo-Dolce Lia, Gianantonio Paladini, Ogham by FRM-Maristella Creazioni-Dolci Chicche, Flora Lastraioli-Matteo Pecchioli for Flora Lastraioli, Rossella Lingerie-Rossella Falciati-College, Ambra Corsetteria, Linclalor-Gloria Baroni-H.J.Tempest-Bisbigli-Miss Bisbigli, Dana, Lisanza, Madiva-Artimaglia, Oscalito, Mila Shon-Romeo Gigli-Daniele Alessandrini, Magie di Luna-Ildemat, Parah-Off Limits-Parah On Line, Pierre Mantoux, Luna di Seta, Valcuvia, Valery-Rosapois. PAGE N° 50 - UNDERWEAR COTONELLA - “SILK-LIKE COTTON“ Lightweight, soft and hygroscopic, cotton is the world’s choice in fibers because it is natural, absorbent, hygienic, easy to wash and highly resistant; and now, thanks to its high performance, wearability, and comfort, it becomes the star of Cotonella’s collections. “Silk-like cotton” is the latest innovative line, made in super soft jersey cotton 36, which is made using a fine, ultrathin, breathable yarn that is as lightweight as a second skin. The two-way stretch cotton jersey, 94% cotton and 6% elastam, is the key to “Silk-like cotton”, which combines the added value of the yarn to the minimalist design of the garments, just highlighted by delicate, charming finishing touches. The whole line is personalized by a small embroidered label with logo on the left side of the garments. The “Silk-like cotton” collection, aside from classic white and black, offers women a lively selection of fashionable colors like indigo, orange, bubblegum pink and pomegranate. Men can choose between ash, indigo, cobalt and deep blue. Cotonella continues to invest in research and innovation so as to offer the highest quality standards of safe, comfortable, refined underwear that is gentle on the skin. Another innovation is the antibacterial gusset in pure AB100 Cotonella cotton, which has an antimicrobial action that lasts for over 100 washes, and was designed to comply with every woman’s safety and protection requirements. Its presence guarantees the most intimate defense against bacteria and the utmost hygiene and freshness throughout the course of the day. Cotonella continues to invest in research and innovation, and behind each apparently simple garment is a long history of research and development and the enthusiasm of a team of professionals that aims for the future. “Silk-like cotton “ for women. The low-waist string is almost invisible thanks to the softness of the elasticized cotton and the thinness of the yarn. The flat elastic band around the waist and the ultra thin rim around the leg make the string almost invisible underneath any garment. A classic model, which has sold very well for many years, is the low-waist Brazilian briefs; lightweight and fresh, soft on the skin and with no thick segments. The traditional low-waist briefs are carefully constructed, with their low-cut flat elastic band around the front of the leg with an invisible rim around the back. Girdles, with their essential line finished with a flat rim around the leg and anatomical central seams at the back, shaping and highlighting the thighs. The top is light and smooth as a feather, and comes with a thin rim shoulder with flat elastic band within it, so that it can suit all sizes. The tank-top’s round-neck is finished with a low, thin rim, a small curling in the middle, and is cut below the breast to lend this classic and essential garment a dash of personality. The briefs, a classic and traditional garment, are highlighted by the ultrafine elasticized jersey cotton. The elastic band around the waist and the one around the leg are ultra thin, while the antibacterial gusset adds quality to the garment. Comfortable and form fitting, the midi brief’s legs are not cut as deep as the ones on the brief, and the garment is also equipped with antibacterial gusset. The ultralight maxi briefs’ high-rise cut comfortably covers hips and abdomen, has an ultra flat elastic band around the leg and is equipped with antibacterial gusset. The technical and functional Long is ideal for summer, thanks to the lightness of its fabric and its ability to absorb sweat. This model helps prevent irritation of the skin caused by the thighs rubbing together. The flat elastic bands make this garment extremely comfortable and fresh, thanks also to its antibacterial gusset. “Silk-like cotton “ for men. Young and stylish, the low cut briefs has Cotonella’s logo heat pressed in a different shade of the same color and ultrathin microfiber elastic bands around the waist and leg; the briefs hug the body in a natural way leaving no marks. Low waist short boxers, with a clean and sporty design and a soft elastic band around the waist and lateral seams. Internal gusset in cotton. Traditional design trunks, with legs just slightly longer than the short boxers. The flat and soft elastic band hugs the waist and is equipped with an internal gusset in cotton. The classic vest has wide shoulders finished with flat, thin rims on the round-neck; a simple multifunctional garment that is an absolute must for young adults; and finally the classic midsleeve vest completes the line’s range. PAGE N° 52 - YARNS MIROGLIO NEWLIFE® SPINNERIES ECO-FRIENDLY PHILOSOPHY Established in 1884, the Miroglio group is currently a world leader in the field of clothing fabrics. The Group’s expansion has led to approximately 11000 units, 59 companies throughout 34 different countries. The Group consists of three divisions: fabrics, yarns and clothing. In 1972 Giuseppe’s sons, Carlo and Franco, started expanding onto international markets, thanks to an investment policy of purchasing foreign firms and opening new facilities. The yarn division was formed in 1981 to address the group’s own manufacturing requirements, but soon enough this production was also active on external markets, and today it makes up 90% of the total turnover. Constant investments, the ability to adapt to the market’s multiple requirements and ongoing research and development into new products are all fundamental elements that have characterized the group’s success. The continuous and remarkable investment program for polyester continuous yarn and for discontinuous yarns has resulted, beyond a simple production increase, in a constant improvement in quality standards, which, combined with ongoing efforts in research, has led to excellent results in spinning. A considerable leap forward was achieved with highly sophisticated products like polyester microfiber threads, controlled and differentiated shrinkage threads for fashion and sportswear garments, additive enhanced threads with multifunctional characteristics for technical uses, threads made from modified polymers. Today the spinneries offer, through the group’s various brands, over 300 different types of yarn and thread, each with its own unique properties. The manufacture is subdivided into different units in Italy and abroad. The Saluzzo Spinning Mill is specialized in using polyester chips to manufacture Poy, hot-pressed, raw and solution dyed yarns with multifunctional characteristics.Yearly production for Poy alone ranges around 10,000 tons. Located in Bulgaria, with 42,000 spindles installed, the Nova Zagora facility manufactures texturized, parallel or twisted, curled, single twisted or pair twisted Rayon in polyester threads. The Italienne Spinning Mills, in Tunisia, have for the past ten years been manufacturing discontinuous yarn. The manufacturing unit is equipped with over 15000 spindles for the manufacture of ring yarns, which are used in the manufacture of yarns in viscous fibre, modal, micromodal, wool blend, polyester, nylon blend, and fine fibre blends like silk, cashmere and angora.Today, an eco-friendly commitment has focused research on the environment, which led to the development of the Newline threads range. This new philosophy is a result of the Group’s concern for the quality of life and for the protection of environmental resources by lowering CO2 emissions and saving electricity and water. The threads in recycled polyester use the Pet from recycled plastic bottles, which are thus reused and not disposed of in the environment, which also results in a huge reduction in CO2 emissions as well as power and water savings. Aside from continuous yarns the Miroglio Spinneries also manufacture discontinuous yarns made from fine fibre blends of both protein and vegetable origin for the clothing sector. The quality of continuous threads and yarns is guaranteed by the Oeko-Tex brand, which promotes the firm’s eco-friendly image. Manufacturing processes are ISO 9001:2000 certified. To better explain the new direction taken with the Newlife philosophy, we had a brief conversation with Stefano Cochis, the division’s manager. What leads to requiring an eco-friendly thread? Today, the evolution of our conscience as individuals and a growing concern for the quality of life has made us all aware of the environmental harm caused by an indiscriminate approach to the use of natural resources. Every day we get a clearer picture of how our individual choices can make a difference. Because of this, our firm’s environmental concern has led to the recent development of Newlife®, an eco-friendly thread line manufactured from recycled polyester. The Miroglio Spinneries found that PET could be used to develop a high quality thread by using material from recycled plastic bottles. Pet is a plastic material used in packing, bottles for water and sodas, jugs of detergent, jars for medications etc. After being used, these containers in PET are usually disposed of by consumers and become waste, polluting our cities. Environmentally aware, Miroglio Spinneries are committed to doing their part in limiting environmental impact by recycling PET materials and using them in the development of textile threads to be used in fabrics for garments and furniture. Time and moneywise, how much was invested in research and development? Aimed at manufacturing a recycled polyester thread that held the same quality and performance standards of virgin polymer polyester threads, Miroglio Spinneries invested, over a span of two years, several hundred thousand euro, which finally led to the development of a product that is currently marketed under the Newlife® brand. How is the eco-friendly message conveyed and perceived? The product’s eco-friendliness is backed by the Plastica Seconda Vita (Second Life Plastic) certification, which guarantees the production line’s traceability, so that the origin of Newlife® threads can be monitored from the collection of plastic bottles all the way through to the PET facility and finally to the Saluzzo CN spinning mill. Furthermore, the gathering, processing and spinning facilities are located just a few kilometres from each other, so that CO2 emissions due to PET transport can be cut down to a minimum. What kind of performance standards does the NewLife thread line offer? Newlife® threads have the same standards as polyester threads made from virgin polymer, and can therefore be used in the various textile divisions, from clothing to sportswear, from the medical field to furniture. Newlife® allows the customer to transfer the product’s eco-friendliness to his own products without any compromise in quality. What are the next goals and strategies for the Miroglio Spinneries in the various markets and countries? To consolidate ourselves as the European leaders in recycled polyester and as the natural reference point for all textile manufacturers concerned for eco-sustainability. What is Miroglio Spinneries’ commitment to the environment and what are its selling points? Aimed at reducing the production cycle’s environmental impact, the Miroglio Spinneries intend to expand the Newlife® philosophy to the whole products range, thus replacing the use of virgin polymer with recycled PET as raw material for the manufacture of polyester continuous threads. In fact, recently a flame retardant thread was developed using recycled PET. Furthermore, thanks to the technology we have available, we can dye threads during the spinning stage, which allows customers to skip the thread or fabric dyeing stage, which means saving non-renewable resources like water (10 litres to dye 1 kg of thread) and electricity used during processing. PAGE N° 54 - COMPANY TESSITURA COLOMBO ANTONIO KEY WORDS – INNOVATION AND SERVICE The Colombo Weaving Mill was among Italy’s first historic textile firms to invest in manufacturing Raschel lace for corsetry. Already going strong with the stiff lace collections in the early eighties, after breakneck structural progress the firm started focusing also on elastic lace, which was in great demand from its customers. It is worth mentioning that in ‘88 the firm bought over a small company that manufactured elastics for corsetry, and thus Euronastri was established: with 80 looms, approximately 5 million metres a month, it gives the firm useful support and strong sales synergy. In ‘92, in the same area, the new 8,000 m2 facilities were erected, bringing the whole structure to 12,000 m2; then the firm decided to integrate its production with its own internal robotic dyeing facilities, which allow monitoring the whole dyeing process up to trivial error margins, throughout all of its stages, including weighing, melting and the automatic colour delivery to the machinery. In line with and supporting the environmental philosophy that has always been a staple of Tessitura Colombo, a large investment was made in purchasing a purification plant, to ensure full environmental respect. Fully conscious of its own strength, the firm can now look to the future with serenity, thriving on the challenges that the future market will bring. Research and constant attention paid to evolving market requirements have led, over the past fifteen years, to several important investments, which have resulted in the purchase of cutting edge looms for lace. Currently, Tessitura Colombo has 40 looms, including raschel, jacquardtronic 43 bars, jacquardtronic 78 bars, jacquardtronic Piezo, embroidered effects, supertextronic, cliptronic, and the latest tech JL and TL. Creativity is translated into data fed to the looms thanks to cutting edge CAD facilities that even allow for a perfect video simulation of the fabric. Production spans stiff and elastic lace with widths ranging from 1 to 135 cm, basic lace is characterized by simple designs and low costs; multirelation lace, an evolution of basic electronic lace, allow richer designs and the use of microfiber yarns. Jacquardtronic lace with widths ranging from 2 to 135 cm, with intermediate lace with sophisticated designs and infinite background possibilities thanks to jacquard. “Piezo” lace, similar to jacquardtronic with the possibility of slightly embossed designs thanks to its innovative system. Embroidered effect lace, high-end, character- 65 ized by a tulle backing with an embossed imitation embroidery design. Textronic lace, top-of-the-line, characterized by a jacquard backing and an embossed lace design for a stunning effect using fine fibres. 60% of the products is sold in Italy, while the remaining 40% goes to Europe, Asia and the U.S. The whole range of products goes through various control levels, from the raw materials stage up to the finished product, so as to guarantee the highest quality standards for the customers. Tessitura Colombo’s future projects include constantly innovating its collections to develop the most unique products, improving services for its customers by creating personalized collections and marketing through the sector’s media. For 2011 Spring-Summer,Tessitura Colombo has designed a new series of underwear and corsetry lace that embrace the trends of winter 2011-12. The dominant trend is for designs that give lace a light and delicate look, which brings to mind the retro atmosphere of the fifties. Colours range from pastel to delicate, contrasting with stronger, more luminous hues. Because of its elegance, seduction and sensuousness, Black is given its fair share. Upcoming is also a new service proposed for style offices, which includes the possibility of sampling lace, tulle and ribbon all in the same colour, so that a prototype garment may be developed in real time. PAGE N° 56 - MEN’S PREVIEWS FASHION CLASSIC The fashion world changes this January with Pitti’s F-W ’10-11 trends and colours, Milano Moda Uomo, and Bread & Butter. Pitti Uomo starts with 742 companies, 918 brands, of which 300 abroad, 22,672 buyers at its last winter event, 7,066 of which were foreigners; all this to embrace the new market trends moved by new consumer habits, which lead buyers to be highly attentive to the combinations of styles and products. The evening of Wednesday, January 13, Corneliani, guest of honour with its designer clothing lines, unveils its collections with a fashion show at Stazione Leopolda in Florence. Additionally, among the many special projects, previews and international releases unveiled at Fortezza da Basso, are: Everlast will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a large exhibition area inside Arena Strozzi; add will unveil its new collection; a cult label for contemporary jeanswear, the Dutch firm Denham, will debut; the internal unveiling of Fornarina Sportglam, the new fitness-chic line; and the worldwide presentation of the glamorous Scottish label Barbour. A “Royal Countryside” mood defines Eton’s collection. The Swedish brand of fine shirts reinvents the image of a typical British country gentleman, with his natural, comfortable elegance. Multicoloured lines in different formats that recall the seventies, chequered and tartan designs and even black & white define the formal/casual look for daily wear. Highlights of the brand that counts among its customers people like the Swedish Royal Family and David Beckham. Massimo Rebecchi retraces the most important steps of his philosophy and reinterprets style and creative spirit by merging military and workwear, breathing life into ultra-fit jackets with new, softer retro revers in matted wool jersey, mixed with tough, biker-look coated cottons. Unique fabrics transformed by treatments with resins, closely woven materials, double twists, multiple surfaces with “sanded” and rounded effects, on dusty and mixed hues. Heavy rider jackets, studs, leather with vegetable dyes, coated, armoured, oiled and resinated jersey for wearing with ‘’combat’’ pants and K-ways, reveal a workwear look with a rugged flavour. Sportswear leads us to the ski tracks, in cold Celtic lands, for a seventies mood made of nylon and down jackets in rescato fabrics that recall ski-suits, for a ‘’trendy duvet’’ look, but with padding and constructed linings. Haute Uomo looks to the future backed by the talent of two women, Cristina Lombardi, Artistic Director, and Alessandra Moschillo, the label’s Vice President. Highly refined details in this stunning and sophisticated line, defined by touches of a timeless yet very contemporary elegance. Blauer continues its work inspired by New York’s police force, a world that has always been connected to the image of this U.S. brand that for over seventy years has been dressing America. Its down jackets are the pièce de résistance and in this collection they are as lightweight and warm as ever. Coats with technical, high quality fabrics like nylon and micronylon combined with more conventional fabrics like wools and cottons, which result in interesting contrasts in weight and volume. Pirelli’s designs reinterpret the brand with new shapes and fabrics: with Pzero Rex, the sneaker of steel, resistant and “stainless”.Its upper in micronetting is defined by wide, aerodynamic cuts. Its high performance sole of rubberized steel in quicksilver colour makes it absolutely unique. Lamé and carbon fibre applied to its technical fabric highlight its hi-tech spirit. Serious research went into the Rubber Rain Jacket, with a hood in technical rubber touch fabric, a hi-tech Japanese run-proof nylon fabric that is covered in a layer of polyurethane to make it completely waterproof while retaining breathability, giving it a rubbery yet soft feel. Its detachable lining, in technical fleece of a contrasting colour, makes it possible to adjust the garment’s weight to suit individual requirements and weather conditions. Grip Jacket, inspired by the 24 hours of Le Mans, is a technical fabric jacket that has undergone a unique finishing treatment with an innovative blend of resin and ceramic powder that lends the garment a rubbery effect with a cotton-like feel. An ultra-lightweight membrane on the fabric makes it completely water and windproof. The detail that distinguishes it is the new rubber button shaped like a tyre on a wheel. The silkscreen print that defines it is inspired by the graphic symbolism and icons found on the outer edge of racing tyres. Ermenegildo Zegna underwear is synonymous with style and elegance, creativity and refinement in its choice of colours and combinations, supported by research and quality. Well defined colour ranges where grey is leader, in single colour or combined with melange, black, navy blue, soft denim and burgundy. Aside from classic shapes and fabrics, like pinstripe, regimental and poplin, Zegna highlights its flannel series, with a new micro-chequered design, while its micro-polka-dots effect jacquard is now decorated by the embroidered heraldic coat of arms. Colour, creativity and comfort blend in a collection where glamour and quality find their “intimate” balance. This is the concept behind Parah Uomo, underwear with new colours, which retains the same wearability characteristics while perfecting models and styles. Denim, burgundy and melange grey dyes back up timeless black and white, lending a lively, daring spirit to these basic garments. Great care went into defining models, stitchings and in positioning logos, and in selecting warm, soft elastic fabrics like Micromodal, cotton, viscose, cotton jersey, flannel and Sensitive®, Light, fabrics that guarantee protection, breathability and quick drying. Embroidered men’s socks make a comeback thanks to Redepaolini. This men’s brand, manufactured entirely in Italy by Rede in Parabiago, returns this season to tradition and sartorial exclusivity. Embroideries on men’s socks combined with the care of handcrafted finishings. The goal is to aim for tradition while innovating, using as selling points the skill and support of small, hi-tech workshops that manufacture their sartorial products with a keen eye on quality and elegance. The first mini-collection is made up by four exclusive, multicoloured embroideries, which bring to mind the English countryside; the special packaging is in line with the high range of the product. Gallo reinvents its collection with soft, light yarns in sophisticated colours. For customers addicted to Vintage, there is the new Gallo rattoppo. This new, exclusive type of sock represents a new form of elegance. Distinction and elegance are at the forefront, with small, multicoloured patches in Alcantara®. Mini-oval versions, as well as more classic patches, or shaped like a rooster. The colours are obviously 66 very exclusive, like surfinia, ruby, ocean, sky-blue, navy, dark blue-green, peacock blue and curry yellow, a snobbish touch for menswear. Ashai Kasei fibres, as per the previous edition, complete the Classico Italia display. Leading names amongst Italy’s high-tailoring world join forces with the quality standards of this Japanese brand. PAGE N° 60 - REPORT MAREDIMODA INTIMODIMODA - POSITIVE The enthusiasm of the investors led to positive results at the latest event held in the Palais des Festivals. The concept of offering a real platform for advanced services led MarediModa IntimodiModa, in contrast to the performance of all other international textile fairs, to close with a positive balance and a 9% increase in visitors over its previous instalment, which actually had 15 more firms participating. Created in November 2003 with the goal of promoting and representing the interests of firms working in the textile and underwear and swimwear manufacturing fields, MarediModa has established itself as the most representative fair in the beachwear division, gathering together each year in Cannes all beachwear fashion leaders, from manufacturers to designers, providing participants with an innovative update on the beachwear and underwear design world. The development of custom designed events like the Outsourcing show have been successful, working as a platform for all quality firms in the Euro-Med area offering themselves as alternatives to the already familiar Far Eastern companies, which are often culturally very distant from the sensibilities of European manufactures, and spurred interest for countries with a high production potential. The new trend forum designed and developed by Stylesight was innovative and enlightening, involving designers with its interactive formula that re-imagined the standard trends area; another popular forum was the What’s fair in fashion today? Ethics and product traceability, which created awareness among the public regarding some of the issues that are at the core of the event, which were presented and analyzed by David Shah, trend forecaster and editor of Textile View magazine, Gregori Piazzalunga, Parah Group’s President, Stefano Soro, Director of the “Product and Service Safety” unit of the European Commission, and Maurizio Bonas, Chairman of the Made in Italy Committee. This eighth edition was also witness to the birth of “The Link”, the most ambitious European talent scouting program that involved 100 fashion design and visual communication universities, gathering all the most enthusiastic young talents to develop beachwear and underwear collections and themed advertising campaigns. Thanks to the active support of the contest’s main sponsor, Invista, fashion students were able to develop their collections using fabrics containing Lycra® fibre, provided by firms participating at Maredimoda-Intimodimoda, while communication students worked on a project aimed at promoting the Xtra Life Lycra® fibre in terms of innovation, performance and uniqueness. The over 100 exhibitors at Maredimoda, Intimodimoda were able to meet the buyers from 800 of the most qualified manufacturing firms from around the globe, from over 70 countries including Italy, France, Spain, Great Britain, the United States, Japan and Russia. The results exceeded expectations and served to further consolidate the leadership of this Cannes fair among its international competitors in the field of beachwear and underwear fairs, thanks also to the high level of specialization and product screening of European textile products, which stand out thanks to their ethical and responsible manufacture. There was no shortage of novelties, which included Maglificio Ripa’s business opportunity to display its new line of clothing fabrics that directly addressed its clients’ requirements. A constant commitment to research and development and partnership with specific collaborators like expert knitwear stylists, led to the development of an outerwear collection backed by underwear-outerwear; no less important is the beachwear fabrics collection, which allowed investing in the latest technologies. Witness the birth of Skin Comfort®, an innovative Dryarn® patented fabric (the first synthetic hypoallergenic breathable fibre to have been dermatologically certified) that has led, thanks to creators Luca Bianco, Managing Director, and Maurizia Botti, Lecturer at the Research Centre of Milan’s Politecnico, to the development of garments made specifically for those who suffer from chronic dermatitis. Wellbeing productions include those in natural fabrics, like 100% cotton combined with MicroModal, Ultralight 54 gauge Nature and Light™ 54 gauge, which Cupro guarantees are extremely soft. Swimwear included novelties from the Light™ TechnoPower family, with Xtra Life Lycra® Invista. Innovation and colour are staples of Eurojersey, which with Sensitive® Fabrics System, launches Sensitive®ColourTherapy, with a unique array of colours: 80 plain colours, all available in the Sensitive® Classic line and arranged according to a colour scale in line with the latest market trends. Sensitive® fabrics are becoming increasingly eco-friendly, thanks to Eco-Print Clear, a beautiful eco-sustainable brand using a new technology that interacts with plain colours for tone on tone or contrast effects and uses a special chemical solution in its manufacture that allows dyeing the fabric for aesthetic, financial and environmental results. The new Summer Beachwear 2011 collection includes Sensitive® Life, a fabric that offers the utmost comfort, elasticity and quick drying, extreme resistance to chlorine and mineral substances and to the salts found in thermal waters. Sensitive® Power, a technical fabric designed to aid performance in competitive swimming, thanks to its muscular support effect. Sensitive® Seric, bringing the unparalleled silky smoothness originally developed for the underwear sector to the world of aquawear.
