It focuses on the traditional workmanship of stone carving and is directed by Romanian stonemason master and sculptor Dumitru Ion Serban. Participants will experience a comprehensive process starting from the overview of different types of stone, their extraction, the tools, to traditional processing techniques applied to architecture elements. Using very simple tools he was able to construct some of the most amazing structures ever built. The Cucagna castle, built in the 11th/12th century, is situated on a hill in the forest, about 30 min. walking distance from the small town of Faedis, Italy. Cucagna is a building site, unique example of philological reconstruction, open to young professionals of all the world interested in historical architecture, restoration and reconstruction, archaeology and history of art, traditional working techniques and materials. He is a graduate of the Sculpture Department of National University of Arts in Bucharest, Romania. He has then specialised in Scientific Basis of Restoration with expertise in stone, ceramics and glass, through specialization courses in Romania, Italy, United Kingdom. He has had solo exhibitions since 1990 in Romania, Italy, and Greece and participated in international symposiums in Italy, Hungary, Turkey, Egypt, India and New Zealand. He received numerous international awards and prices for his work: First prize for stone sculpture (Romania, 1989), National Design Award, National Theatre art gallery (Romania, 1993), Special prize Living room of decorative arts (Romania, 1993), First prize for sculpture in National Competition Cremona 2000 - Luigi Valenti Trophy, (Italy, 2001), First prize for sculpture XIII International Biennial of art, Gallery GB Tiepolo (Italy, 2002). The course will cover the following topics: • Setting up the work area • Managing weights: Moving blocks using various techniques with the help of basic technology • The tools of traditional stonework and their maintenance: forging and hardening • Techniques of Stone working: etching, bush hammering, lanyard, roughing, trimming • Creation of a common architectural structure preserve the ancient knowledge of stonemasonry in the region. The course is open to young professionals, artists and students from the 4th academic year onwards. Candidates will be selected for a maximum of 10 participants. REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION: • Knowledge of English or Italian language • Good manual skills, practical experience of craftsmanship, experience in construction • Interdisciplinary and interactive spirit Organised by Istituto per la Ricostruzione del Castello di Chucco-Zucco In collaboration with Youth Exchange Programme of MINISTERO AFFARI ESTERI The program will be complemented by specialists lectures, video screenings and short excursion visits to extraction of raw material sites. Anthropological research will also be part of the programme through visits and interviews with local people, artisans, communities and museum collections that still
