Italy and the Nordic Architects
International Seminar

Rome, November 14 -15 , 2013
Accademia Nazionale di San Luca
th Ancona, Lausanne, October 9 2013 Presentation Ninety nine years after the travel to Italy of Erik Gunnar Asplund, the seminar aims to explore the mutual influences between Nordic and Italian, or Mediterranean, architecture. The papers discuss the architect’s travel from the Nordic countries to the Mediterranean or viceversa, as well as the mutual influences between these two architectural ‘universes’. The main purpose of the seminar is to enlighten the hybridation and exchange processes which have provided significant chapters of the history of architecture. Beyond the travel (carnets, sketches, drawings, photographs, reports, descriptions, etc.), the selected papers deal with single works or the entire productions of an architect or a group of architects. The seminar aims to debate how formal models and solutions from different areas can contribute to the enrichment and the growth of architectural cultures able to include them without denying their own characteristic features. The seminar is the result of a growing academic research network between Italian and Nordic universities which takes a significant support by the Institutes and Academies of the four Nordic countries in Rome.
