Le donne e gli uomini di mare li riconosci sempre.
Hanno sete di libertà. Sali in barca e il mondo cambia. Molli l’ormeggio e sei tu. Tu e il mare. Tu e il vento. Tu e scegliere dove andare.
Nascono così, gli uomini e le donne di mare. Nascono con il bisogno di partire, di riempire quella
costante nostalgia di vento e acqua, di salsedine
e onde, alla ricerca di se stessi, dei fari nella notte,
dei porti da raggiungere.
Ognuno dal proprio ormeggio, escono inseguendo
quella libertà e quella pace che solo il mare e il vento sanno offrire.
È quando le tante rotte si incrociano che nasce la
Barcolana. È un rito collettivo che si consuma in
una gioiosa sfida dal sapore antico.
Barcolana è partire dal proprio porto e arrivare a
Trieste a ottobre. In tanti, uomini e donne di mare
raggiungono questo golfo e lo colorano con la loro
passione. Creano un’isola di barche, un ponte di
barche, un tappeto di barche addossate ai moli.
Con la bonaccia o la Bora, Trieste attende il loro ar-

rivo e il loro riversarsi in città. Barcolana è Mauro
con la sua barba sempre più bianca e la passione
immutata. Barcolana è Vasco, che non si ricorda
più quante ne ha fatte.
Barcolana è Paul, che quella del duemila non se la
scorda. Barcolana è Isabelle, velista solitaria che
arriva dalla Francia, ed è Marianna e il suo gatto,
partite da Genova due mesi fa. Barcolana è Alberto,
che torna a casa dopo il Giro del Mondo.
Barcolana è migliaia di velisti, ognuno con la sua
storia. Trieste le ascolta, sussurrate tra i refoli, raccontate ad ampi gesti, ricordate e celebrate assieme, scritte in questo momento, mentre mollate gli
ormeggi.

It’s always easy to recognize seamen and women.
They are thirsty for freedom. You board your boat
and your world changes. You slip the moorings and
there’s only you. You and the sea. You and the wind.
You and your destination.
Seamen and women were born this way. They were
born with the need to leave, to be in constant contact with wind, water, salt and waves, always in search of themselves, of lighthouses at night and harbours to reach. They slip their moorings and leave
to chase that sense of freedom and peace that only
the sea and the wind can offer. When their numerous
routes meet, Barcolana comes alive. It’s a collective
tradition consisting of a cheerful competition with
an antique flavour. Barcolana means leaving from
your local harbour and reaching Trieste in October.
Many seamen and women reach this Gulf and colour
it with their passion. Their boats, moored along the
quays, virtually form an island, a bridge, or a carpet.
With a dead calm sea or with the Bora wind blowing,
Trieste waits for sailmen and women to fill the city.
Barcolana is Mauro, with his beard going greyer
every day but with his passion staying exactly the
same. Barcolana is Vasco, who can’t remember
how many regattas he took part in. Barcolana is
Paul, who can’t forget the 2000 edition. Barcolana
is Isabelle, a solitary sailwoman from France, and
Marianna, who left from Genoa two months ago together with her cat. Barcolana is Alberto, who comes
home after travelling around the world. Barcolana is
thousands of sailors, everyone with their own story.
Trieste listens to them all, stories whispered through gusts of wind, stories passionately told, stories
relived and celebrated together and stories that are
being written right now, while you’re slipping your
moorings.

La Barcolana 2015 si presenta al pubblico con un
manifesto d’eccezione, realizzato dallo “Special
Partner” illycaffè, che ha scelto Michelangelo Pistoletto, uno degli artisti contemporanei italiani
più autorevoli e stimati a livello internazionale, e
Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto per disegnare
il ruolo di Trieste, del suo mare e del suo principale
evento, in grado di attrarre nell’alto Adriatico centinaia di migliaia di persone.
In Barcolana il mare si accende di tutti i colori e diventa spazio di gioia e condivisione: il manifesto
vuole sottolineare il valore di attrazione di una città di mare come Trieste, in particolare la seconda
settimana di ottobre.
Con illycaffè la Barcolana continua il percorso iniziato lo scorso anno con Missoni: grandi aziende e
imprenditori che hanno portato il nome di Trieste
nel mondo creano per la Società Velica di Barcola e
Grignano, in occasione della Barcolana, un’immagine e un messaggio che tocca la profonda essenza
della città.
The 2015 Barcolana edition shows itself to the public
with an extraordinary poster, realized by Barcolana’s
special partner illycaffè. The company has chosen
Michelangelo Pistoletto - an internationally highly appreciated painter and sculptor, and one of the most
important Italian contemporary artists – and the Cittadellarte-Pistoletto Foundation to portray the importance of Trieste, of its sea and its main event, which
attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the northern Adriatic sea. During the Barcolana, the sea becomes a colourful place to share a happy and wonderful
experience. The poster underlines how attractive a coastal city like Trieste can be, especially in the second
week of October. The collaboration with illycaffè has
allowed the Barcolana organizers to continue with the
initiative they launched last year with Missoni. Great
companies and enterpreneurs whose work has contributed to making Trieste well-known all over the world
create an image or a message representing the deep
essence of the city for the Società Velica di Barcola e
Grignano, on the occasion of the Barcolana regatta.

PAUL CAYARD
Stregato dalla Bora
Partendo dall’alto, e in ordine sparso: Coppa America,
due edizioni delle Olimpiadi, Whitbread e Volvo Ocean
Race, solo per citare gli eventi che rappresentano l’apice della carriera dei velisti. E poi svariati titoli mondiali, la partecipazione a un numero pressoché infinito di
regate, dagli anni Settanta a oggi. Ma, in questo lungo
elenco di eventi e partecipazioni, Paul Cayard non si
è mai dimenticato della Barcolana. Anche perché vi
ha preso parte nell’anno più difficile, il 2000, quello
delle raffiche fino a 50 nodi. E cinquanta nodi con
poco meno di duemila barche in acqua non si scordano: nemmeno un velista che salta da un pozzetto
all’altro può dimenticare la sensazione di planare a
25 nodi con TuttaTrieste! al largo di Punta Grossa. “La
Barcolana è rimasta ben impressa nei miei ricordi –
racconta Paul Cayard dalla Sardegna, dove ha appena
vinto la Perini Cup al timone del 56 metri Rosehearty,
una delle barche più belle al mondo – ho partecipato
in alcune edizioni, molti anni fa e nel 2000 e quella
non me la scordo. Ero con Vasco Vascotto, il velista
triestino di maggior successo, con 30 nodi di Bora e
beatamente planavamo a 25 nodi poco distanti dalla
Slovenia. Poi il timone si è rotto, e immediatamente e
tristemente la nostra regata era finita. Siamo tornati
in porto, ma con la radio accesa abbiamo sentito che
qualche equipaggio aveva bisogno di aiuto: io e Vasco
abbiamo preso un gommone e siamo usciti a dare
una mano a due barche, l’ho sempre considerato un
modo estremamente soddisfacente per chiudere una

giornata che mi aveva lasciato l’amaro in bocca a causa della rottura del timone”.
Barcolana per Paul Cayard è anche guardare più indietro nei ricordi, negli anni del Moro di Venezia, che
l’hanno trasformato in un’icona della vela in Italia:
“Barcolana per me significa anche ricordare Raul Gardini: era una delle sue regate preferite, la considerava
la regata italiana tipica e unica, un’icona”.
E Trieste? Trieste piace, a Paul: “Mi sono sempre tanto divertito a Trieste, anche quando ho partecipato a
varie edizioni della Nations Cup: ho sempre avuto l’opportunità di incontrare tanta gente amante della vela,
entusiasta e amichevole. E poi, vogliamo parlare dei
ristoranti di Trieste? Speciali!”.
Quest’anno Cayard torna con Anywave, a sostenere a
terra e in mare il progetto Onboard ideato da Massimo
Franzo. “Anywave è ben più che una barca. E’ il simbolo di un progetto la cui missione è quella di portare un
messaggio. E il messaggio è che tutto si può raggiungere, se si lavora in squadra con un obiettivo comune.
Massimo Franzo ha capito che, in questo preciso momento, questo messaggio va portato avanti nel Nord
Est Italia, e io sono felice di essergli a fianco.
Per la Barcolana Franzo ha scelto una barca che è stata abbandonata e trascurata per molti anni. Grazie a
un’ottima intuizione e a un grande progetto un gruppo di persone ha messo insieme le risorse necessarie
per recuperarla e farla regatare di nuovo.
Una bellissima storia”.
VASCO VASCOTTO
Trent’anni di Barcolana
Vasco Vascotto non ricorda. Davvero non ricorda
a quante “Barcolane” ha partecipato. Coetaneo
della regata, nato nei giorni in cui in Golfo si svolgeva la prima edizione, non può semplicemente
ricordare quando, per la prima volta la seconda
settimana di ottobre, è salito con mamma e papà
su “Business”, la barca di famiglia, per festeggiare il suo compleanno e al tempo stesso partecipare alla regata di Trieste. “Però ricordo perfettamente la prima edizione nella quale ho timonato:
avevo 14 anni, ed ero il timoniere di una barca
che mi è rimasta nel cuore, il Julie”.
Quest’anno, una trentina d’anni dopo, Vasco Vascotto torna alla Barcolana al timone di Robertissima III, ed è un anno, anche questo, speciale.
Torna dopo aver vinto il 25.o titolo mondiale, le
sue nozze d’argento con la vela.
“Questa è stata una stagione eccezionale – racconta Vasco – ma non cambia nulla. Io gli obiettivi me li pongo ogni giorno: navigare bene, lavorare con la stessa voglia e lo stesso impegno di
quando avevo otto anni e timonavo il mio Optimist sognando di vincere un campionato mondiale, o quando la prima volta ho timonato Julie
in Barcolana.
La verità è che sono sempre molto motivato, e
questo mi permette di superare con serenità anche le giornate più difficili”.
Per Vascotto si prospetta quindi una Barcolana
rilassata? “Ma non è così! Della Barcolana bisogna avere molto rispetto, e questo significa
parteciparvi con il giusto spirito, non bisogna
sbagliare l’approccio alla regata: orgogliosamente, considero questo evento la festa della vela e
la festa della mia città. Lo spirito giusto è quello
di partecipare a una grande festa collettiva, a
cui tutti sono invitati. Poi è chiaro che avere una
barca veloce e di una certa grandezza permette
anche di voler essere tra i primi.
Ma io, quando salgo in barca in Barcolana, non
dimentico mai questo: sto partecipando a una
festa, l’unica festa al mondo di tutti noi velisti.
È l’evento che mostra al mondo quanto è bella la
mia città, e quanto dovremmo esserne orgogliosi ed entusiasti tutto l’anno, non solo quando la
presentiamo al mondo nella settimana della Barcolana.
Ecco, ogni volta che torno a Trieste io penso
questo: penso che lo spirito di ottimismo, gioia
e unione, che la capacità imprenditoriale che si
esprime in Barcolana dovrebbe ripetersi ogni
giorno.
Ogni giorno a Trieste dovrebbe essere Barcolana:
se avessimo questo approccio, la nostra bellissima città potrebbe promuoversi a livello internazionale e avere quella crescita che si merita.
Ho visto tanti porti, ma davvero ragazzi: Trieste
è unica e merita di essere valorizzata sempre!”.

America’s Cup, two editions of the Olympic Games, Whitbread and Volvo Ocean Race. These are
just some of the competitions which Paul Cayard
has taken part in and which represent the highest achievements in a sailman’s career. In addition, he has won several World Championships
and has competed in a great number of regattas
from the 1970s up to the present day.
Even though he has taken part in many events
and competitions, Paul Cayard has never forgotten the Barcolana regatta. He competed in one of
its hardest editions, in 2000, when the Bora wind
was blowing at 50 knots. And you really can’t forget such a wind speed with almost 2,000 yachts
at sea. Even if you are a very experienced sailman, you can’t forget the feeling of planing 25
knots on board “TuttaTrieste!”, off Punta Grossa.
“I have participated of couple of times over the
years, including one very memorable edition with
Vasco Vascotto, Trieste’s most successful sailing
son. It was probably
2001 and the Bora was blowing 30 knots as we
started off toward Slovenia, planing at 25 knots.
About half way to Slovenia, our rudder broke. Suddenly and sadly, our race was finished. After getting the sails down (not easy without a rudder)
we got towed back to the harbour in Trieste. Safely back at the dock, our radio was still on and
we heard calls for help from racers still out in the

strong winds. Vasco and myself jumped in a RIB
and went out to assist two distressed yachts. It
was a satisfying way to end a disappointing day
for us”.
For Paul Cayard Barcolana is also a jump back in
the past, back to the time when he was the skipper of the “Moro di Venezia” and became an icon
of sailing in Italy. “I am excited to return to Trieste
for the Barcolana, an iconic sailboat race. It was
one of Raul Gardini’s favourite races”.
And what about Trieste? Paul likes the city. “I
have also enjoyed competing in the Nations Cup
back in early 2000 and had the opportunity to
meet many friendly people and experience the
great restaurants of Trieste.
Cayard will compete on board “Anywave” this
year, supporting the “OnBoard project” both on
land and at sea. “Anywave is more than a boat.
Anywave is the emblem of OnBoard, a project
whose mission is to give a message. The message is that anything is achievable if we all work as
a team. Massimo Franzo, the man behind the OnBoard project, feels this is an important message
for the Northeast of Italy in this moment. For the
regatta, Franzo chose a boat that had been neglected for many years. Thanks to a new vision,
a good intuition and a group of person that put
together their resources. Anywave has been refurbished and will be competing once again”.
Vasco Vascotto really can’t remember how many
Barcolana regattas he has taken part in. He was
born in the same days in which the first Barcolana edition took place in the Gulf of Trieste and he
really can’t remember when, in the second week
of October, he boarded his family boat called “Business” with his parents to celebrate his birthday
and take part in his first Barcolana regatta. “But
I perfectly remember the first edition in which I
helmed. I was 14 and I was the helmsman of a
yacht that I have loved ever since, the ‘Julie’.”
This year, after about 30 years, Vasco Vascotto
will compete once again in the Barcolana regatta onboard “Robertissima III” and, once again,
he will do so on a special occasion, that is after
winning his 25th world championship, his silver
anniversary with sailing.
“It’s been an extraordinary season,” says Vasco,
“but that hasn’t changed my attitude. I set myself
new goals every day: sailing well, and working
with the same enthusiasm and diligence I had
when I was 8 and sailed on board my Optimist
dinghy dreaming of winning a world championship, or when I helmed the ‘Julie’ for the first time
in the Barcolana regatta.
I always have great motivation and this allows
me to get through even the hardest days with serenity”.
So, will it be a relaxed Barcolana for Vascotto? “Ab-
solutely not! I think that everyone should approach the Barcolana with respect, that is by competing with the right motivation and by approaching
the race in the right way.
I proudly consider this event to be the festival of
sailing, as well as my city’s festival. Participants
should think that they’re taking part in a great
collective celebration to which everyone is invited.
Of course, if you have a quick and large yacht,
you want to be among the first to cross the finish
line. But when I board my yacht in the Barcolana
regatta I never forget that I’m taking part in a festival, the only celebration of sailing in the world.
That’s the event that shows the whole world how
beautiful my city is, and I think that we should be
proud and enthusiastic of it every day of the year,
and not just during the Barcolana week. That’s
what I think every time I come back to Trieste.
I think that those feelings of optimism, joy and
unity and the entrepreneurial skills which are
shown during the Barcolana should be the same
every day. Every day should be like a Barcolana
day. If we did so, our city could promote its image
internationally and gain the importance and the
attention it deserves. I have seen many harbours
and I can say that Trieste is really unique and its
attractiveness has to be enhanced as much as
possible.”

grande compito: quello di aprire i dieci giorni di regate della Barcolana, scendere in acqua nel Bacino
San Giusto e regalare al pubblico il colpo d’occhio di
oltre 350 “giovani vele” di fronte a Piazza dell’Unità.
Di “piccolo” Barcolana Young ha solo l’età dei timonieri, compresa tra gli 8 e i 15 anni. Per il resto, è un
grande evento, ricco di entusiasmo, di competizione e di voglia di divertirsi.
Sei le regate in programma sabato 3 e domenica 4
ottobre: su un percorso nel Golfo di Trieste si sfidano i migliori velisti della classe Optimist, con una
posta in palio davvero alta.
L’evento prevede infatti bellissimi premi per atleti
e circoli velici ed è arricchito quest’anno dal suo
nuovo ruolo: tappa finale del prestigioso circuito
Kinder, classifica speciale che evidenzia il risultato
dei giovani timonieri in alcune selezionate regate

The young sailors of the Optimist Class have an
important responsibility: to open the ten days of
the Barcolana regattas, to go into the water in the
Bacino San Giusto and offer spectators the breathtaking view of 350 “young sails” in the waters off
Piazza Unità d’Italia. The only thing that is “small”
in the Barcolana Young is the age of the helmsmen
who are 8 to 15 year olds. Other than that, it is an
equally great event, filled with enthusiasm, competition and fun.
The regattas are scheduled between Saturday
3rd and Sunday 4th October: the best sailors of
the Optimist Class will compete along a set route
in the Gulf of Trieste. The stakes are very high as
the event gives athletes and trainers the chance
to win wonderful prizes. As a matter of fact, it will
be the last stage of the prestigious “Kinder” sailing
circuit, a special ranking based on the results of
the young helmsmen in some chosen Italian regattas. A “mini village” will be set up ashore, along the
Molo IV, to extend the warmest hospitality to the
sailors and give spectators the chance to follow a
youth regatta live.

“Go To Barcolana” è un rally nautico: gli armatori possono partecipare iscrivendosi a uno dei due trasferimenti che partono da Spalato e Fiume oppure iscrivendosi alla regata che inizia a Isola.
Tutti i partecipanti a “Go To Barcolana” hanno diritto a
un ormeggio gratuito nei Marina Aci dal 3 al 18 ottobre
e a un posto barca riservato al loro arrivo a Trieste.
Si parte il 3 ottobre: gli armatori di Spalato salperanno per un inedito rally in direzione di Trieste seguiti
dalla flotta di Fiume e uniranno le proprie rotte lungo
l’Adriatico con i regatanti di Isola per raggiungere assieme la città della Barcolana.
I primi cinquanta iscritti riceveranno in omaggio la
App Navionics Boating Europe con la cartografia del
Mediterraneo.

A new initiative has been launched to accompany
yachts reaching Trieste from all Slovenian and Croatian harbours on the occasion of the Barcolana
and reinforce the bond among sailors in the Adriatic Sea. “Go To Barcolana” is a sailing rally and a regatta at the same time. Shipowners can take part
in the event by either entering one of the two rallies
starting from Split and Rijeka, or entering the regatta starting from Izola in the first days of October. As
soon as they arrive in Trieste, all “Go To Barcolana”
participants will be allocated a mooring.
All participants of the Barcolana regatta, even
those who don’t take part in the rally, have the
right to moor for free in any of the ACI Marinas
whenever they want to take a break from their journey, between 3rd and 18th October. The first fifty
shipowners entering the race will receive the Navionics Boating Europe App with the cartography of
the Mediterranean Sea for free.

windsurf, kitesurf e wakeboard, adesso è l’ora di
nuotare in Bacino San Giusto, a due passi da piazza Unità e dal Molo Audace. Poco meno di un chilometro a nuoto, con un percorso che si dipana tra il
Molo IV, il Molo Audace, il Molo Bersaglieri e con arrivo davanti alla Scala Reale, di fronte piazza Unità:

enjoy it without sails. Barcolana Nuota is a long-distance swimming event which has been introduced for
the first time this year, organized with the Trieste swimming association Nuotamatori.
Barcolana Nuota fully embodies the spirit of the Barcolana and, like other side events, will be hosted in the
Bacino San Giusto, allowing spectators to enjoy disciplines that are not usually practiced in the town centre.
Beside windsurf, kitesurf and wakeboard, also swimming will be practiced in the Bacino San Giusto, not far
from Piazza Unità d’Italia and Molo Audace. The course
will be almost one km long and will stretch from Molo IV,
Molo Audace to Molo Bersaglieri and the finish line will
be in front of the Scala Reale, just off Piazza Unità d’Italia. The event is not competitive and is open to all swimmers and swimming enthusiasts. We look forward to

Una finestra di cinque giorni, da sabato 3 a mercoledì 7 ottobre, per trovare la Bora perfetta. Perfetta
per saltare nel Bacino San Giusto con il kitesurf, e
per partecipare all’evento “long distance”, dal Molo
Audace al Castello di Miramare in windsurf e kitesurf. Si rinnova Barcolana Fun, l’esibizione dei più
scatenati della vela, quelli per i quali i refoli di vento
servono per saltare e per planare sulle onde.
Tre kiter provenienti da Capo Verde quest’anno incontreranno gli specialisti italiani del Lago di Garda,
e assieme ai kiter e windsurfer del Golfo di Trieste
daranno vita allo spettacolo di fronte al Molo Audace, sempre all’alba; poi si confronteranno in una
prova di resistenza e tattica: chi primo arriva a
Miramare sfidando la Bora all’alba, in una manifestazione non agonistica che colorerà di kitesurf e
windsurf il Golfo.
Torna anche il wakeboard, con un trampolino in
Ponte Rosso e una serie di atleti pronti a saltare
nella vasca a pochi passi dalla chiesa di Sant’Antonio.

A five-day time window, from Saturday 3rd October to Wednesday 7th October, to find the perfect
Bora wind. The perfect wind for kitesurfers to perform their jumps in the Bacino San Giusto and for
windsurfers and kitesurfers to take part in the
“long-distance” race, with a course stretching
from Molo Audace to Miramare Castle. Three Cape
Verdean kitesurfers will compete with their Italian
counterparts from Lake Garda and, together with
kitesurfers and windsurfers from the Gulf of Trieste,
they will be the protagonists of an amazing show
at dawn, in the waters off Molo Audace. Afterwards,
they will challenge each other in a competition
based on endurance and tactics. They will have to
challenge the Bora wind at dawn and race from the
Molo Audace to Miramare Castle, taking part in a
non-competitive event which will fill the Gulf with
kitesurfing and windsurfing boards Wakeboarding
is back too, with many athletes ready to jump from
the springboard in Ponte Rosso into the pool just a
few steps from the Church of Sant’Antonio.

Land Rover porta nuovamente a Trieste, unica occasione per vederli in Italia, gli Extreme 40: catamarani agili e veloci, che regatano in spazi ridotti,
come se fossero in uno stadio.
E lo stadio in questione sarà anche in questa edizione il Bacino San Giusto, che accoglierà una serie di
regate degli Extreme 40, un evento dimostrativo e,
in anteprima, un particolare format che appassiona anno dopo anno milioni di persone dall’Australia
all’Inghilterra, dalla Russia agli Emirati Arabi.
Dall’8 all’11 ottobre gli appassionati di vela avran-
no l’occasione di tifare per i grandi campioni delle
Extreme Sailing Series, seguire le evoluzioni dei
catamarani, salti, virate e strambate su uno scafo
solo, e gli incredibili approcci alle boe, il tutto a pochi passi da terra.
E lungo le Rive, uno spazio tutto dedicato ai catamarani, con la possibilità di toccare con mano questa nuova e sempre più appassionante dimensione

After the great success of the 2014 edition, Extreme 40 @Barcolana is back. Once again, spectators will be able to enjoy the evolutions of the
amazing Extreme 40 catamarans in the Bacino
San Giusto.
Land Rover will again offer the only chance in Italy
to enjoy the performances of Extreme 40s, nimble and quick catamarans, which race in reduced
spaces as if they were in a stadium.
The stadium concerned is, also in this edition, the
Bacino San Giusto that will be the first in Italy to
host a series of regattas of Extreme 40 catamarans, an illustrative and preview event, a special
format that fascinates millions of people year after year from Australia to England, from Russia to
the United Arab Emirates. From 8th to 11th October

sailing enthusiasts will have the chance to support the great champions of the Extreme Sailing
Series, watch the catamarans’ evolutions, jumps,
tacks and gybes on one hull, as well as incredible
ways of approaching the buoys, with all of this
happening a few steps away from the shore.
Along the Rive a special area will be dedicated to
catamarans, where it will be possible to experience first-hand this new and increasingly fascinating aspect of sailing.
This year, for the first time, the Extreme 40 catamarans will race on Sunday morning too. On 11th
October, they will sail in the Bacino San Giusto and
in front of the dam of the Porto Vecchio, offering
an exciting show to the spectators waiting along
the Rive for the Barcolana Regatta.

Gli organizzatori della Barcolana mettono a disposizione dei vincitori di categoria dell’edizione 2014
della regata e dei loro equipaggi una flotta di barche tutte uguali, organizzando per loro Barcolana
Challenge, ovvero la “regata dei migliori”.
Qui giocano tutti in trasferta: barche uguali, stesse vele. La regata si disputa a bordo degli Este
24, scafi monotipo di sette metri e mezzo, poco
distante dalle Rive, all’ingresso del Bacino San
Giusto.

La Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano, in collaborazione con il Saturnia e con il Comitato regionale
della Federazione italiana canottaggio, organizza
sabato 10 ottobre nel primo pomeriggio Barcolana
Rema, la regata promozionale dedicata alle Jole a
8 di legno.
Tre bellissime Jole storiche scenderanno in acqua
per sfidarsi su un percorso lungo 800 metri parallelo alla Diga del Porto Vecchio, con partenza all’altezza del Molo Zero e arrivo all’altezza del Molo Terzo.
La gara di Jole a 8 sarà preceduta da due batterie di
jole a 4, che regateranno lungo lo stesso percorso.
La manifestazione, di carattere promozionale, vuole sottolineare come ogni appassionato di sport e
di natura possa trovare, nel mare, la propria dimensione: a vela, a remi, nuotando o giocando in squadra a pallanuoto.

Committee of the Italian Rowing Federation, has organised Barcolana Rema, a promotional regatta raced on 8-person wooden Yole boats, which will take
place in the early afternoon of Saturday 10th October.
Three amazing historic Yoles will take the sea and
challenge each other along an 800-metre course,
which will run parallel to the dam in Porto Vecchio,
with the starting line off Molo Zero and the finish line
off Molo Terzo. Along this very course, 4-person Yoles
will challenge each other competing in two different
heats just before the 8-person Yole regatta. The event
is promotional and aims to show that every sport and
nature enthusiast can live their passion at sea, be it
on board a sailing or a rowing boat, by swimming, or
playing water polo in a team.

Se le Rive di Trieste resteranno lo storico cuore del
Villaggio con la zona dedicata agli scafi ormeggiati da ammirare, agli hospitality degli sponsor e ai

valorizzare le attività sportive, per i bambini e per
dare voce e spazio alle istituzioni e all’associazionismo, con un’area interattiva dove praticare sport.
Un primo passo verso il futuro, verso il Porto Vecchio che già in questa edizione si aprirà all’evento:
dai parcheggi a disposizione per il pubblico alla
bretella pedonale e ciclabile, fino al trenino che collegherà la zona degli ormeggi al Molo Zero con le
Rive e la Centrale Idrodinamica, per un evento che
cresce in mare, ma che in questa edizione torna a
crescere anche a terra.
The Barcolana Village, open from 7th to 11th October,
will be even larger this year. Thanks to the collaboration between the Port Authority and the Municipality of Trieste, important innovations have been
introduced. The Barcolana Village will be nearer the
Porto Vecchio (the Old Port), making the Molo IV more
crowded and lively. The Trieste seafront – the Rive will remain the traditional heart of the Village, hosting a mooring area along its quays for spectators to
admire the beauty of the vessels, hospitality areas
for sponsors, and temporary stores. The Molo IV, on
the other hand, will host sport and children’s activities and an area to promote initiatives of institutions
and associations. There will also be an interactive
area to do sport. That’s a first step towards the future and towards the Porto Vecchio, which this year
will be part of the event with car parks for spectators,
a foot path and a cycle path and also a train that will
connect the mooring area, in the Molo Zero, with the
Rive and the Hydrodynamic Plant. Besides growing
at sea, this year the event will grow on land too.

Dal 2 all’11 ottobre 2015 il Magazzino delle Idee di
Trieste si trasforma in uno speciale laboratorio di
tradizioni marinare, grazie alla collaborazione della
Provincia di Trieste, del Museo del mare, dell’Istituto Nautico, della Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Friuli Venezia Giulia e dell’Associazione Aldebaran. Un cantiere dove il tempo si è fermato ed
è possibile navigare contemporaneamente a bordo
di una passera lussignana e della goletta America,
rivivere le gesta di Azzurra, la prima barca italiana
in Coppa America, trovarsi al fianco di Paul Cayard a
bordo del Moro di Venezia o imbarcarsi su un veliero che solcava i mari nel tardo Ottocento.
Un po’ museo, un po’ laboratorio, un po’ mostra fotografica, BarcolanaLab propone diversi itinerari:
un viaggio tra i modelli delle imbarcazioni a vela
dall’Ottocento a oggi, un laboratorio di modellismo
rivolto ai ragazzi, uno spazio dedicato alla storia
della Barcolana, un percorso tra gli strumenti di navigazione, una mostra fotografica curata da Claudio
Ernè, che ha aperto il suo archivio selezionando per
il pubblico della regata triestina immagini di barche
a vela da regata del primo Novecento.

From 2nd to 11th October 2015 the multipurpose
centre “Il Magazzino delle Idee” in Trieste will be
turned into a special shipyard. A shipyard where
time has stopped and visitors can sail on board
one of Losinj’s typical “passere” and the schooner
“America”, relive the accomplishments of “Azzurra” - the first Italian yacht competing in America’s
Cup -, sail with Paul Cayard on board the Moro of
Venice or embark on a sailing ship that sailed the
seas in the late XIX Century.
A museum, a workshop and a photographic exhibition at the same time, this is what BarcolanaLab is, offering a number of different itineraries:
a journey across models of sailing ships from the
XIX Century up to the present day, a workshop of
model building for young visitors, an area dedicated to the history of the Barcolana regatta, and
a photographic exhibition organized by Claudio
Ernè, who has selected photographs from his
archive depicting early XX Century race sailing
boats to be displayed for the spectators of the
Barcolana regatta.

Imagine a chef in the regatta
Un unico ed eccezionale ingrediente: dieci cuochi
stellati, pronti a vivere a modo loro – regatando
e cucinando – la Barcolana. Un nuovo evento si
aggiunge, in questa edizione, al calendario delle
manifestazioni collegate alla Barcolana: si chiama Barcolana Chef, ed è in programma lunedì 5 e
martedì 6 ottobre. Barcolana Chef, realizzato con il
supporto di illycaffè e Pasta Zara, porterà a Trieste
dieci famosi chef italiani, tutti stellati, capitanati dal
friulano Emanuele Scarello, proprietario e chef del
ristorante “Agli Amici dal 1887” di Udine: i “super
cuochi” prestati per due giorni alla vela arriveranno a Trieste per regatare uno contro l’altro, a bordo
di dieci imbarcazioni uguali e per competere poi in
una cucina.
La regata-gara sarà a tema: in questa prima edizione, Scarello ha scelto lo “spazzacambusa”, quel
cibo preparato l’ultimo giorno della crociera estiva,
quando bisogna finire ciò che è rimasto delle provviste. Barcolana Chef, infatti, avrà una classifica
composta da più prove: alla regata si sommerà la
prova di cucina.

Just one, extraordinary ingredient is needed: ten
Michelin-starred chefs, ready to live the Barcolana in
their own way - by sailing and cooking. A new event
has been added to the side events of the Barcolana
this year. It’s called Barcolana Chef and it will take
place on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th October.
Organised with the support of illycaffè and Pasta
Zara, Barcolana Chef will bring ten famous Italian
Michelin-starred chefs to Trieste. They will be captained by Emanuele Scarello, chef and owner of the
“Agli Amici dal 1887” restaurant, located in Udine.
These great chefs will reach Trieste and turn themselves into sailors for two days. First they will compete on ten identical boats and then they will challenge each other in the kitchen. It will be a theme
competition. For this first edition, the theme chosen
by Scarello is “sweep the galley”. The chefs will challenge each other on recipes which are created on the
last day of summer sailing when sailors have to use
up all the provisions left in the galley. The final ranking of the Barcolana Chef will be drawn up according
to the results of two different competitions: the regatta and the cooking contest.

Il mare passa in città. La Barcolana si espande lungo una rotta tra quartieri, spazi, negozi e ambientazioni a tema marinaro.
Grazie a FuoriRegata, alla sua terza edizione, il centro di Trieste diventa protagonista proponendo un
calendario di eventi a tema nautico, ma non solo,
in una serie di location raggiungibili a piedi dalle
Rive. All’iniziativa hanno aderito molte realtà economiche e culturali, sia cittadine che internazionali, unite in un percorso da svolgere seguendo il
calendario di eventi dedicato ai turisti e ai triestini.
Dal 2 ottobre e fino al giorno della Barcolana si
svolgeranno mostre, performance, show cooking,
eventi per bambini e altre entusiasmanti occasioni
di incontro. Facile seguire la rotta: ogni aderente a
FuoriRegata ha una sua vela che contribuirà a colorare il centro città riproponendo anche a terra un

From the sea toward the shore. The Barcolana spreads and reaches the city following a route that meanders through Trieste’s quarters, roads, shops and
maritime settings. Thanks to FuoriRegata – in its
third edition – the centre of Trieste plays the lead
with a very rich calendar of events including – of
course – many nautical events, in various locations
that can be easily reached on foot from the Rive.
Many businesses and cultural organizations, both
local and international, have joined the initiative.
They will be connected by a pedestrian route that
has been conceived for both tourists and locals and
can be followed according to the calendar of events.
From the 2nd October to the day of the Barcolana,
you will be able to visit exhibitions, watch performances, enjoy cooking shows and events for children, and meet people. The route is easy to follow: all
FuoriRegata venues will display a sail for this occasion, making the city centre colourful and virtually

possono chiudere in musica la vigilia della regata,
con un programma a ingresso gratuito. Barcolana
in Musica vuole essere un momento di festa per gli
sportivi e per tutti coloro che arrivano a Trieste per
seguire l’evento, da assaporare nello splendore di
una cornice unica, fatta di mare e vele colorate.
On Friday 9th and Saturday 10th of October, the regatta’s eve will end in music: the Barcolana soundtrack will be played - an unmissable event for sailors and spectators, with free entrance for all.
The Barcolana in Musica wants to be a moment of
celebration for both the athletes and all those who
come to Trieste to follow the regatta, to be relished
within a splendid, unique frame – the sea and the
colourful sails.

regatta more enjoyable for the competitors and
more impressive for the spectators on land. That
is why the start is now closer to the shore, the first
side is shorter, the buoy along the “return course”

all, the finish line is in the city centre, just off Piazza Unità d’Italia and in front of the enthusiastic

Per favorire le oltre mille imbarcazioni che provengono da
porti lontani gli organizzatori della Barcolana hanno messo a punto un piano di accoglienza lungo le rive e i bacini
del Porto Vecchio per assicurare un ormeggio protetto e sicuro, fatte salve situazioni di pericolo dovute a particolari
condizioni meteo-marine qualora previste dall’Osservatorio Meteorologico Regionale (OSMER - ARPA FVG), che verranno tempestivamente comunicate attraverso le emittenti radiofoniche ufficiali della regata e il canale VHF 16.

I Cantieri San Rocco sono facilmente raggiungibili dopo aver

Sheltered from all winds, in particular from the Bora (northeast wind), backwash with south-east wind. Next to permanent boats, about 15 more boats can be hosted. It is a mile

minutes) connects it with Trieste city centre.
H BARCOLA HARBOUR
Packed with fixed boat users, not easy to reach when a strong
Bora wind blows. It is very near to the start line, only 5 minutes walk from the SVBG Club House. Bus number 6 connect
it to the city centre.
I BASIN ONE OF THE PORTO VECCHIO
The basin can be easily reached on foot in twenty minutes
from Piazza Unità d’Italia. Crews will be able to reach the Molo
IV by taking the Barcolana train near Magazzino 26 (Warehouse 26).
L BASIN IV OF THE PORTO VECCHIO
Boats may be moored stern-to and secured with chains. The
anchor may be dropped in the area included between the
east and the south-west side of the basin.
Mooring locations
In order to help over a thousand boats coming from far
away ports, Barcolana Organizers have set up a welcome
plan along the waterfront and in the Old Port area offering
a safe and sheltered berth, except in case of danger due
to particular marine weather conditions forecast by the Regional Weather Observatory (OSMER - ARPA FVG) that will
be immediately communicated through the official regatta
radio channels and VHF 16.
Upon arriving in Trieste, boats looking for a berth may contact the Barcolana Mooring Base through VHF channel 6.

D DUINO HARBOUR
Small harbour under the famous castle. It does not have
berths for tourists but it can be used for short stops.
E SISTIANA BAY
Sheltered from all winds, the marina has berths on pontoons
and quays occupied by permanent boats. There are few available berths for visitors. It is 8 miles away from the start line.
The bus stop to Trieste (every hour) is 15 minutes walk uphill.
F SANTA CROCE HARBOUR
Useful temporary shelter in case of bad weather, the small
harbour offers only single berths for the tourist in transit (it

Boats may be moored on the south side of Molo IV and in
the area stretching between the entrance to the Ponterosso
Channel and the beginning of Molo Audace. Boats may also
be moored on the north side of Molo Audace, but they shall
not be moored at its edge, which is reserved for emergency
vehicles (helicopters).
N SAN GIUSTO BASIN
Moorings are available for about one hundred boats authorized by the Organizing Committee. Boats shall be moored
stern-to and tied up with mooring lines secured to chains.
Boats shall not be moored at the edge of Molo Audace, which
will be used for the landing of emergency helicopters (the area is marked with the letter H on the map).
The basin is safe, but subject to undertow from the west. It is
not advisable to moor in this basin in case of northerly winds.
Boats may also be moored on the north side of the Stazione
Marittima (mooring 29).

Una sacca tutta da scoprire
A bag full of gifts
Prodotti alimentari – praticamente una cambusa
con marmellate, alici sotto sale, caffè, vino, acqua –
un welcome pack donato dalla illycaffè e ovviamente la polo ufficiale della regata, prodotta da Slam.
E ancora, gadget per la pulizia della barca e il bellissimo bicchiere della Barcolana, già protagonista a inizio settembre di una campagna di “guerrilla marketing” dedicata agli armatori triestini e monfalconesi.
Anche quest’anno la borsa prodotta da Slam e donata a tutti gli armatori al momento dell’iscrizione è
ricchissima di prodotti: anzi, come assicura chi nelle
ultime settimane ha lavorato per comporla inserendo tutti i materiali, forse è la più ricca e variegata di
sempre. Non resta che iscriversi, per ottenere il “super mix” di gadget che la sacca da marinaio ha in serbo per tutti gli armatori, il cui valore – per la maggior
parte delle categorie di scafi – supera ampiamente
il costo dell’iscrizione! Attenzione: all’interno della
borsa torna a grande richiesta anche il catalogo prodotti di Motomarine, una cui ampia selezione è presente nel Villaggio Barcolana.
Food products – virtually a galley filled with jams,
salted anchovies, coffee, wine, water – a welcome
pack offered by illycaffè, and obviously the official
polo shirt by Slam. In addition, gadgets for cleaning
the boat and the amazing Barcolana glass, which
has already been part of a “guerrilla marketing”
campaign aimed at shipowners from Trieste and
Monfalcone at the beginning of September.
As in previous editions, the bag by Slam, which is
given to every shipowner taking part in the regatta, will be full of great products. Actually, according
to our staff, who has been working on its contents
in the last few weeks, it will contain more products
than ever before. All that’s left to do to receive all
these amazing gadgets is to enter the regatta!
Their value is much higher than the entry fee for
most of the regatta yacht categories. Note: the bag
will also contain the Motomarine catalogue, which
was much appreciated last year. Many of its products will be available in the Barcolana Village.

Dopo il grande successo del 2014, Barcolana e
SLAM navigano assieme anche in questa edizione
dell’evento, proponendo al pubblico una nuova collezione caratterizzata da tessuti tecnici, design
adatti agli appassionati di vela. La polo ufficiale –
prodotta in techno piquet, tessuto che non richiede
stiratura, protegge dal sole e non scolorisce – è disponibile nei negozi SLAM del Nord Est e nel Villaggio
Barcolana assieme alla “collezione Barcolana”, in
vendita già dall’inizio di settembre. Agli armatori
della regata la polo viene donata dagli organizzatori
al momento dell’iscrizione, assieme alla borsa e a
numerosi altri gadget.
After the great success of the 2014 edition, Barcolana and SLAM have continued to collaborate this
year, offering a new collection, characterized by hitech fabrics and designs that are just what sailing
lovers look for. The official polo shirt, made in techno
piquet, protects from sunlight, does not discolour
and does not need ironing. It can be purchased in
the SLAM shops in North Eastern Italy and in the
Barcolana Village, together with the “Barcolana collection, which has been available since the beginning of September. All shipowners taking part in the
regatta will receive it as a gift from the organisers,
along with the bag and several other gadgets.

crew’s skills and safety equipment. I shall also stay informed of the weather conditions using all means provided by the Organizing Committee and I explicitly declare that I shall take full responsibility for damage caused to
individuals or third-party items, to myself or my personal items, both aboard the yacht and ashore, as a result of my participation in the Regatta, relieving the Organizing Committee and any person involved in the organization
of the Regatta, under any role, of any responsibility. I, the undersigned, warrant that the people that are on the crew list are those who will be actually embarked. I am fully aware of the ISAF Fundamental Rule 4: “it shall be
the sole responsibility of each yacht to decide whether or not to start or to continue to race”. I am aware that the Race Committee reserves the right to deny permission to race to the PASSERE category and/or to other
