Attilio FERRARIS IV
Attilio Ferraris IV (Roma, March 26 1904 – Montecatini Terme, May 8 1947) – On 25 September
1927, at the Motovelodromo Appio, A.S. Roma played their first competitive match in the national league
championship: the captain of that legendary XI was Attilio Ferraris. This versatile half-back was a great favourite
with the Giallorossi fans and had already won a place in the Italy team in 1926 with Fortitudo. He was the first
Roman to be selected to play for Italy (but not the first to play for the Azzurri; that honour was to go to Fulvio
Bernardini). Ferraris wrote a page in the history books with Vittorio Pozzo's team as Italy lost 3-2 in a friendly
against England, distinguishing himself for his charisma and earning the title 'Lion of Highbury'. It was 1934,
the year of his temporary separation from Roma. Clashes with board members and in particular with president
Renato Sacerdoti resulted in Ferraris being suspended for insubordination, and consequently led to an
unthinkable insult - transferring to the other side of the Tiber, where he spent two long years before moving to
Bari for another two. In 1938 he finally came back to Roma, to play his eighth and final season in yellow and
red. He finished his career with 210 appearances and two goals in the league, while he also put the first trophy
into Roma's trophy cabinet, the 1928 Coppa Coni. He died prematurely in May 1947 of a heart attack during a
match between former stars and holiday-makers in Montecatini where he lived.

Giuseppe GIANNINI
Giuseppe Giannini (Roma, August 20 1964) – Too young to contribute to the 1983 Scudetto-winning
team, too old by the time the Giallorossi next triumphed in the league, in 2001. Giuseppe Giannini makes for an
unusual story. A born talent, he wore the 10 shirt on his back and in his heart, along with the captain’s
armband. He was loved and yet went through tough times. He was adored yet questioned. When he did have
his ability called into question, he was able to react with class and character, even at the most difficult times.
Giannini would do extraordinary things which were too often short-lived, such as his hat-trick in the final of the
Coppa Italia defeat to Torino or his headed goal – followed by a crazed run beneath the Curva Sud – in the
terrible UEFA Cup night against Slavia Prague. Not only that, Giannini was also able to banish his own
nightmares, none more so than his famous goal away to Foggia. That goal was doubly significant, because
Roma were in a relegation scrap and because he had been criticised following his missed penalty in a fractious
and unfortunate derby a fortnight previous. Giannini made his Roma debut as a 17 year old in 1980/81, but
only became a regular in the side in 1984/85, when he made 26 appearances and scored 4 goals with Nils
Liedholm in charge. ‘Il Barone’, who watched him develop as a player, also put his faith in him when he
returned to the helm following Sven Goran Eriksson’s departure. The glory years of the great Roma side of the
early 1980s faded amid disappointment, and as the symbol of the new side Giannini took the brunt of the
criticism -his elegant style of play caused his critics to question his commitment. His ability to move the ball
and set the tempo saw him mistakenly considered an ineffective playmaker behind the forward line. He ended
his career with the Giallorossi after 318 appearances and 49 goals in the league as well as 3 winner’s medals
in the Coppa Italia. In 1996 he made way for a young and promising player who looked up to him: Francesco
Totti.

Vincenzo MONTELLA
Vincenzo Montella (Pomigliano d’Arco, Naples, June 18 1974) – Vincenzo Montella joined Roma in
1999, already boasting an impressive CV: he had scored 54 goals in 83 matches during a three-year spell at
Sampdoria. In the capital he achieved a great deal more. A league title and a Super Cup winner's medal, a
record four goals in a single derby, a host of wonder goals and – from 2013 – a place in the Giallorossi Hall of
Fame. Joining Roma during Fabio Capello's first season at the helm, Montella became an instant hit with his
new supporters, scoring 21 goals in all competitions – 18 in Serie A and three in the UEFA Cup. The following
year, in part due to the arrival of Gabriel Omar Batistuta, he found game time harder to come by and on paper
had a less productive campaign, but the goals he scored tell a very different story. His goals made history. The
forward's strikes made a telling contribution to Roma's Scudetto win. Montella found the net nine times in 17
games in the second half of the campaign, allowing Roma to stay ahead of Juventus thanks to two goals
which quickly became legendary. His shot from distance which avoided a home defeat to AC Milan and the
tap-in which completed a memorable comeback in the title showdown against the Bianconeri in Turin.
The following season, with the Scudetto on his chest, 'The Little Airplane' did damage in the derby too: in the
capital's big clash, Montella became the first player ever to hit four goals in a match between Roma and Lazio,
as the Giallorossi ran riot, winning 5-1. He moved to Fulham on loan in January 2007, before another
temporary spell at Sampdoria. He ended his career with one final season at Roma, finishing with 103 goals in
252 games for the Giallorossi. His 141 goals in Serie A – as of July 22, 2013 – make him 31st in the all-time
top scorer charts and his goals-to-game ratio of 0.49 puts him 24th. He beat off competition in the shape of
Rudi Völler, Pedro Manfredini, Albo Balbo and Marco Delvecchio to land the spot in the Attackers category of
the AS Roma Hall of Fame 2013 class.

Sebino NELA
Sebino Nela (Rapallo, Genova, March 13 1961) - Officially he’s Sebastiano Nela. To Roma fans – who
like to shorten names – he’s ‘Sebino’. Or, more appropriately, ‘Hulk’. Roma bought him from Genoa in 1981
and put him on the right flank, where he immediately became a key player thanks to his pace and power. A
huge character on the pitch, he was a real warrior, becoming an indispensable member of the Roma side of
the glorious 1980s. He made 281 appearances in 11 seasons, scoring 16 goals, including two in the second
Scudetto-winning campaign. In the second half of his stay with the Giallorossi, Nela moved back to the left
side where – as a natural left-footer – he had played during his time with Genoa. He managed to battle back
from an injury which kept him sidelined for almost the entirety of the 1987/88 season. Sebino was fit again six
games before the end of the season and able to recapture a starting berth. He was consistently one of the top
appearance makers in the side, and in 1990/91 he was in the side that went all the way to the UEFA Cup final.
Two seasons later, with Vujadin Boskov in charge, he realised his time at Roma was at an end. Hulk made just
one subsequent appearance in the Coppa Italia, along with two in the UEFA Cup (against Innsbruck and
Grasshoppers) before moving on at the start of the season. Everyone had fond memories of him as he left the
capital with a Scudetto and 3 successes in the Coppa Italia.

Franco TANCREDI
Franco Tancredi (Giulianova, Teramo – January 10 1955) – Thirteen years as a Roma goalkeeper
with a Scudetto in 1983, four Coppa Italia victories and 288 league appearances, including 258 consecutive
ones between 1980 and 1989. Franco Tancredi etched his name in Giallorossi history with his modern
approach to goalkeeping, beginning with Roma in the 1978/79 season. The number 1 of the ‘Grande Roma’
side of the 1980s, Tancredi also celebrated the Scudetto in 2001 as a goalkeeping coach on Fabio Capello’s
staff. In addition to the number of seasons played in a Giallorossi shirt, he also shared Masetti’s strange
relationship with the national team (a common story for many greats in Roma’s history). Following his debut
with the Azzurri, two years after the 1982 World Cup, Tancredi seemed the main choice in goal for Enzo
Bearzot’s Italy team in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. However, in the tournament, which would go down as
one of the least memorable for Italian football, Tancredi lost his place to Giovanni Galli. His run of 258
consecutive appearances places Tancredi in second place only behind Dino Zoff. In 1990 he left Roma in a
transfer to Torino, where he would play his final season as a professional footballer.

Marcos Evangelista De Moraes, ‘CAFU’
Marcos Evangelista de Moraes, Cafu (San Paolo, Brasile – June 7 1970) – Cafu was fundamental
in the 2001 Scudetto, winning over the fans on account of his incredible skills as an attacking full-back, which
over the years also enabled him to play on the outside of midfield. In Zdenek Zeman's first Roma experience,
between 1997 and 1999, the Brazilian winger was lightning-fast, had imagination, class and was tremendously
athletic along the right touchline. This earned him the nickname ‘Pendolino’ or 'Express train'. He is the only
player in the history of football to have played three consecutive World Cup Finals and the only Roma player to
have lifted the World Cup as captain (in 2002 in Japan and Korea). When Fabio Capello arrived, Cafu extended
his range of skills and played a fundamental role in the 3-4-1-2 formation Roma built their base on for their
third league title. He enjoyed going for goal (but scored only five in his 163 league appearances). The
Giallorossi number 2 will go down in Roma history for his happy approach and fair play with the opposition.
And, of course, when he lobbed the unfortunate Pavel Nedved three times in the derby in the title-winning
season. He also won an Italian Super Cup medal.

Giacomo LOSI
Giacomo Losi (Soncino, Cremona – September 10 1935) – A symbol. In the entire history of the
club, Giacomo Losi is one of the finest examples of loyalty and devotion to the Giallorossi shirt. And as it
always happens with such symbols, the stats – although impressive – are not enough to fully describe an
authentic champion, for both his generosity and his performances: fifteen seasons, 386 league appearances,
two goals, one Fairs Cups and two editions of the Coppa Italia. Ercole Bodini – cousin of the former Giallorossi
legend Renato Bodini – discovered him at Soncino and took him to Cremonese. It was an ideal meeting point,
separated by just a few degrees of kinship, between the Testaccio era and the era that was soon to display the
indomitable Giallorossi warrior spirit from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s. Bologna made the mistake of
discarding Losi, paving the way for Roma to take him to the capital in 1954. Through two controversial and
difficult decades – sometimes wrongly forgotten but made more precious thanks to the historic highlights of
the first European triumph (the Fairs Cup in 1961) and the first Coppa Italia in 1964 – Losi, on the pitch, was
the man who held together a team that often ended up paying the price for such a high number of offensive
players. The second Coppa Italia arrived at the end of the final season in yellow and red for ‘Giacomino’ – a
year that saw him with a reduced role. A starter in the first 8 league matches and the group stage of the
Coppa Italia, Losi was a passionate observer for the remainder of the season. Over the following decades his
love for Roma and the city never waned. And for all of the supporters he remains the 'Core de Roma' (Heart of
Roma).

ALDAIR Nascimento Santos
Aldair Nascimento Santos (Ilhéus, Brazil – November 30 1965) – Aldair was a real favourite with the
fans. He was a man of few words, a professional and a great champion. He was also the only Roma player to
receive the honour of having his shirt number (the number 6) withdrawn. Aldair, who was nick-named “Pluto”
by team-mates and fans alike, settled in at Roma in spite of the doubts surrounding his ability in the first years
in Trigoria. These doubts regarding Alda's class, were fortunately cushioned to some extent by his tendency to
find the back of the net. He scored 7 league goals in his first three seasons and then hit 2 against Galatasaray
in the first leg of the UEFA Cup round of 16 tie in November 1992. Despite a ligament injury which kept him out
of the team for over half of the 1993/94 season, the Brazilian central defender managed to play 12 matches
before leaving for the World Cup in America, where he played a key role in Brazil's victory. Aldair returned to
Rome as world champion and took charge of the Roma defence as captain. He eventually was to pass the
captain's armband on to Francesco Totti in the year when the young Roman star established himself in the
number 10 shirt. His final years in Red and Yellow saw him hold on to a first team place in defence in Zdenek
Zeman's first spell at Roma and he was a regular in Fabio Capello's first season at the helm. He played 15
matches in the Scudetto-winning season and then crowned his thirteen years at the club with his testimonial
evening. A visibly moved “Pluto”, said farewell to a jam-packed, emotional Stadio Olimpico.

Francesco ROCCA
Francesco Rocca (San Vito Romano, Rome – August 2 1954) – It is difficult to mention Francesco
Rocca without immediately wondering 'What if?'. But history provides perspective and helps to ease – partially
at least – the huge sense of lasting regret for a career that was blighted by injuries. That is why today, 36 years
after that morning at the Tre Fontane training ground, it seems right to describe Rocca not as what he might
have become but what he actually was. One of the early exponents of the modern full-back role, an original
member of the team that went on to lift the 1983 Scudetto and, of course, a veritable idol for the Giallorossi
fans. After making his debut under Helenio Herrera at the end of the 1972/73 season, Rocca quickly
established himself as a mainstay of the side under Manlio Scopigno and Nils Liedholm. His skill and workrate
earned him a special place in the hearts of the Giallorossi fans, who affectionately called him 'Kawasaki'. A
force of nature with an astonishing change of pace and direction and the ability to charge forward with the ball,
he was a delight to behold for the supporters and a handful for any opposition. The injury that struck him in
1976 – meniscus and capsular ligament – marked the beginning of his well-documented ordeal. Rocca's
tremendous desire to get back on the pitch was punctured by five operations, all the while fighting a daily
battle against the pain and his ensuing muscle problems. After nine seasons, 141 league appearances and
two Coppa Italia triumphs, Rocca retired at the age of 27. His final outing was a 19-minute cameo in a summer
friendly against Internacional, which ended with a lap of the pitch in front of a tearful Olimpico crowd. The
scoreboard read “Grazie Francesco” and his first thoughts after running to the Curva Sud to return the fans'
thanks – breathless with emotion – were for Roma and his team-mates: “Thanks, now I want to see them with
the Scudetto.” He only had to wait two years.

Fulvio BERNARDINI
Fulvio Bernardini (Roma – December 28 1905 / Roma – January 13 1984) – One of the best
players in the history of AS Roma. One of the most important figures in Italian football, a player, coach, scout,
pundit and sportsman in general. Fulvio Bernardini was the archetypal deep-lying midfielder in the metodo
(WW) formation, and advocate of the sistema (WM) formation and good football over the course of his
coaching career. He was the undisputed leader during his 11 seasons with the Giallorossi. On the pitch he
became a leader for his incredible ability to build play and move the ball, while off it he carried tremendous
influence with team-mates and club officials alike. An example of this can be seen from the signing of Guido
Masetti, a player originally rejected after a trial with coach Herbert Burgess but then given a contract after
'Fuffo' vouched for his ability. Bernardini was a cultured and charismatic man and respected for his degree in
economics, which earned him the nickname of “Dottore”, as well as proving the source of a few headaches.
Especially in the national side, with Vittorio Pozzo describing him as “too good” and “someone the players felt
in awe of”. Yet there were few examples of this over the course of his career with the Giallorossi, which he
began in 1928 before hanging up his boots in 1939 and continuing off the pitch over the following decades.
Bernardini had made 285 appearances and scored 47 goals by the time his playing career finished. He
managed four goals in the derby, two of which came in a 5-0 thumping of Lazio at Campo Testaccio on 1
November 1933. As a coach he was in charge of Roma during the troubled 1949/50 campaign, and he won
titles in 1956 and 1964 with Fiorentina and Bologna respectively. He was Italy head coach between 1974 and
1977. After his death in 1984, Roma named their training ground after him, the Centro Sportivo Fulvio
Bernardini in Trigoria.

Agostino DI BARTOLOMEI
Agostino Di Bartolomei (Roma – April 8 1955 / Castellabate, Salerno – May 30 1994) – His is
the story of a great player and public figure interwoven with the mysterious personal life of a reserved man. The
mention of Agostino Di Bartolomei immediately calls to mind his beginnings kicking a ball around the streets of
the Tor Marancia district and his inexplicable death. In between, a football career spanning over twenty years,
full of passion, charisma, class and power. A man who weighed his words carefully, talked straight and
avoided clichés. Everyone knows the story: his beginnings with AS Roma, the year gaining experience at
Vicenza, the return home, where he flourished steadily under the guidance of Nils Liedholm. His maturity as a
footballer was sealed when ‘Ago’ captained his side to the 1983 Scudetto, restoring the champions’ crown to
AS Roma after a wait of 41 years. Who can forget the penalty smashed past Bruce Grobbelaar in the
European Cup Final, and the other, 36 days earlier at the Stadio Olimpico against Dundee United, which put
the Giallorossi through to the dream final? Then the bitter parting with the city and the team, only to find
himself facing them again but this time in an AC Milan shirt in a match charged with the conflicting emotions of
tension and affection. Then came a spell at Cesena and finally he ended his career by leading Salernitana back
into Serie B, before becoming youth team coach. In the course of 11 seasons with AS Roma, Di Bartolomei
gradually developed from an attacking midfielder into a deep-lying playmaker, a tactical evolution that was
crowned over the years with the Scudetto and three victories in the Coppa Italia. He made 237 appearances in
the AS Roma jersey, scoring 50 goals. But the statistics pale into insignificance when compared with the
unforgettable memory of ‘Ago’ the player, as is testified by the lynchpin of today’s Roma midfield, Daniele De
Rossi: “Recently I notched up more appearances than Di Bartolomei. It seemed like sacrilege.” ‘Ago’ died on
30 May 1994, after taking his life at his home in Castellabate in the province of Salerno.

Paulo Roberto FALCAO
Paulo Roberto Falcao (Xanxere, Brazil – October 16 1953) – Iconic. His name, his revolutionary
approach to football, his position, even his number 5 shirt and his trademark celebration – everything about
him made him an icon. The way he ran towards the Curva with his arm aloft as he leapt for joy after scoring a
goal. Over 5 years with the Giallorossi, Paulo Roberto Falcao became one of the best players in Italian football
history, and in doing so remains a legend, not only for AS Roma fans but also for the entire city of Rome.
Brilliant technique and a great engine, with a brain quicker than his languid strides which allowed him to start,
develop and finish moves so effectively. From 1980, the year he came to Rome (amid rumblings the club
would have preferred to have signed Zico), he was no doubt helped by a Roma side on the up, which just
missed out on the Scudetto before finally securing it. In the title-winning season “Il Divino” was in the
opponents’ half what Agostino Di Bartolomei was at the back – indispensable, the right man in the right place.
Instinct, runs off the ball, goals, assists, and an inherent ability to read the game and anticipate things, a skill
only bettered Francesco Totti. Falcao, brought in from Internacional, took a little while to settle in, before
becoming dominant. With Falcao you had the sense that he was making history as he was doing it, a rare feat
indeed. Two more examples to clearly show just how much of a genius “Il Divino” was – both in terms of the
beauty and effectiveness of his play - in that 1980s Roma side: the backheel for Roberto Pruzzo’s goal against
Fiorentina (25 October 1981) and his subtle yet incredibly decisive contribution as his dummy bamboozled the
Swedish defence and allowed Toninho Cerezo to score the third goal in a 3-0 win over IFK Göteborg. The love
affair, much to the fans’ despair, came to an end following disagreements between Dino Viola and the player’s
agent at the close of the 1984/85 season. Falcao finished with 107 appearances and 22 goals in the league, a
league title, and 2 winner’s medals in the Coppa Italia.

Bruno CONTI
Bruno Conti (Nettuno, Roma – March 13 1955) – Bruno Conti has spent a lifetime in the Roma colours.
From a promising young player to standard bearer and one of the stars of the 1982 World Cup, this unstoppable
winger was also part of one of the most moving evenings in the long history of the Stadio Olimpico. He still scouts for
the club and coaches the youth team. He was caretaker-manager for the first team in 2005 and is responsible for the
youth training schemes at Roma. Conti began life in the hub of Italian baseball, Nettuno. Just like many other boys
from his town he dreamed of a future with the very successful local team, he took his first steps on the diamond and
on the pitcher's mound, left-handed of course, and was good enough to convince a Santa Monica team from
California to offer him a contract. His father turned them down and thus changed the history of Roma and of Italian
football. As a youngster Bruno was spotted by Antonio Trebiciani, who took him into the Giallorossi youth sector and
there Conti played his part in one of the best Primavera teams of all time, growing alongside Agostino Di Bartolomei
and Francesco Rocca. Between 1973 and 1975 he managed to make four appearances in Serie A and then was
loaned out to Genoa. When he returned in 1976, he held down a first-team place and scored the decider in the
second derby that season (1-0, 27 March 1977) with a magnificent volley from 25 yards out. Before Nils Liedholm
returned (he took over again in the summer of 1979) he went on loan to Genoa once more, where he laid the
foundations and created an understanding with Roberto Pruzzo playing for the Rossoblu which would later to bring
fortune to Roma. He was sharp, fast and skillful and was one of the centrepieces of the Roma team in the 80s and an
idol for the fans. After the World Cup in Spain came the Scudetto and the season that ended with that ill-fated
European Cup final. His last season under the stewardship of Ottavio Bianchi was not a happy one: the coach only
played him once – coming off the bench in the first leg of Roma's UEFA Cup round of 16 tie – but the fans made up for
this at his testimonial. Twenty-four hours after the second leg of the UEFA Cup final which they lost to Inter, the Stadio
Olimpico filled to bid farewell to the number 7 after sixteen seasons, 304 appearances and 37 league goals, one
Scudetto and five Coppa Italia winners' medals.

Amedeo AMADEI
Amedeo Amadei (Frascati, Rome – July 26 1921) - A legend, but much more than that. Amedeo
Amadei, if possible, represents a distinctive trait in the Roma identity. Statistics tell of nine seasons in the
capital, 100 goals plus a further 16 in the wartime championships, 216 games, one Scudetto and two records.
Both remain intact to this day and only Gianni Rivera has even got close to them. In his first season as a
professional – 1936/37 – “Il Fornaretto” (The Little Baker) became the youngest ever player in Serie A history at
15 years and 281 days and the league’s youngest-ever scorer at 15 years and 288 days. Amadei, who was
still helping out at his family’s bakery, made his debut on 2 May 1937 against Fiorentina and a week later
scored in Roma’s 5-1 win over Lucchese. In 1938 he went out on loan to Atalanta to gain experience and
when he returned he had the support of Guido Ara and Alfred Schaffer, who took the reins four games from
the end of the season. The young forward adapted to both the role of centre forward and wing, playing a
number of games either wearing the number 7 or number 11 shirt. The following season Amadei really burst
onto the scene as a striker, finding the net 18 times in 30 games in what was otherwise a rather forgettable
season for the Giallorossi. He played the same role the following year, as Roma brought home the league title.
Amadei was the perfect last line of attack in Schaffer's system and at the end of the campaign – with the
support of Aristide Coscia and Miguel Angel Pantò – his 9 goals in the last 10 games ensured Torino’s
comeback was in vain. He scored in 5 derbies as a Roma player, winning 4. At the end of the season, with
Roma struggling financially, he was sold to Inter.

Roberto PRUZZO
Roberto Pruzzo (Crocefieschi, Genoa – April 1 1955) – He can be summed up in one word:
‘Bomber’. Roberto Pruzzo marked an era and impressed more than one generation of Roma fans: with his
goals, his behaviour on the pitch and his instinctive and passionate joy. He signed for Roma in the summer of
1978 thanks to the hard work of president Gaetano Anzalone, who fought off fierce competition to secure him.
Pruzzo, who had tried and tested his partnership with Bruno Conti at Genoa, overcame the initial
embarrassment of scoring only nine goals in his first season and began his unstoppable flight. He celebrated
many of his goals below the Curva Sud. One which stands out was on 16 March 1986 when Roma thrashed
Juventus 3-0. The ‘Bomber’, who managed to get a header in from a cross by Carlo Ancelotti, took off his
jersey and raised it to the skies as he ran along the athletics track surrounded by ballboys. Pruzzo proved to
be a thorn in the side on more than one occasion for their great rivals of the time, Juventus. On 4 December
1983, as champions he was to deny them victory, scoring a 90th minute overhead kick to level the scores at
2-2. This was the season of the European Cup final, when Roma held out until the spot kicks thanks to a
splendid equalising goal from the ‘Bomber’ to cancel out Phil Neal and Liverpool's lead. His career at Roma
came to an end after 10 seasons: Pruzzo, who had to step aside for new signing Rudi Voeller, moved to
Fiorentina after 240 appearances and 106 league goals, one Scudetto, four Coppa Italia medals, three Serie A
leading-goalscorer titles and 12 goals in European competitions.
