Il Far East Film Festival di Udine diventa
“maggiorenne”: dal 22 al 30 aprile, infatti,
vedrà accendere i riflettori internazionali
sulla sua 18ª edizione.
Gli oltre 70 titoli del programma attingeranno, come sempre, alle migliori produzioni
dell’ultima stagione (blockbuster, cult movie, outsider su cui scommettere, ma anche
“oasi d’autore” da tutta l’Asia) e il calendario
sarà ancora una volta impreziosito da una
fittissima rete di eventi.
Non mancheranno, ovviamente, i super
ospiti, a cominciare da due vere e propria
leggende: mister Sammo Hung (il 30 aprile “accompagnerà” a Udine l’action-thriller
The Bodyguard e ritirerà il Gelso d’Oro alla
carriera) e Johnnie To che ritorna a Udine
per festeggiare i 20 anni della sua casa di
produzione Milkyway!
Tra le novità del 2016, assieme alla retrospettiva sulla gloriosa fantascienza giapponese e a 4 gioielli di Bruce Lee splendidamente restaurati in 4k, spicca senza dubbio

Udine's Far East Film Festival comes of
age, and from the 22nd to the 30th of April
it will be back in the international spotlight,
this time with its 18th edition.
As always, the 70+ titles in the lineup will
bring together some of the finest offerings
from the previous twelve months (including blockbusters, cult movies, outsiders
and auteur films from all over Asia), and the
programme will once again be embellished
with a rich calendar of events.
There'll also be the usual incredible guests,
who this year include two living legends:
Mr. Sammo Hung (who on the 30th of April
30 will 'accompany' the action thriller The
Bodyguard to Udine and collect his Golden
Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement)
and Johnnie To, who is coming back to
Udine to celebrate the 20th birthday of his
production house Milkyway!
Together with a retrospective of glorious
Japanese science fiction and the beautifully 4K restored versions of four of Bruce Lee's
masterpieces, new additions for the 18th
edition include the FEFF Industry/Focus Asia,
a business event that sees Far East Film 18
partner with the MIA – the Rome International Audiovisual Market (together with the
Audiovisual Fund of Friuli Venezia Giulia in
collaboration of DG Cinema - MIBACT).

Teatro Contatto incontra il Far East Film
Festival. L’Oriente dell’arte scenica incontra
l’Oriente dell’arte cinematografica per
una serata internazionale che chiude la
stagione del CSS e apre, in anteprima, il
viaggio del FEFF 18. Protagonista dell’evento,
un’imperdibile creazione della coreografa
Constanza Macras, un autentico astro della
danza contemporanea.
Un teatro totale, il suo, che in The Ghosts
scatena cortocircuiti mozzafiato fra la danza,
il teatro, la musica dal vivo e una delle arti più
rappresentative della Cina nel mondo: l’arte
del circo, con i suoi equilibrismi e le acrobazie
che sfidano le leggi della gravità.
Il focus di Macras è però singolare e non
convenzionale: ad attirare la coreografa
sono infatti le vite e le parabole artistiche
di alcuni acrobati cinesi ormai alla fine della
loro carriera. Persone che a soli 25 anni
si ritrovano già messe da parte e presto
dimenticate dalla società cinese. Fantasmi,
appunto, che ricordano molto anche alcune
figure della mitologia cinese: gli “spiriti
insoddisfatti”, anime perse che sono state
dimenticate dai loro discendenti, destinate
a una misera esistenza in un regno di mezzo.
The Ghosts regala a tutti loro un temporaneo
ritorno alla vita, rende le loro storie e la loro
arte nuovamente visibili ed emozionanti.
Teatro Contatto meets the Far East Film
Festival. The theatre arts of the east comes
face to face with the cinematographic arts
of the east, for an international evening that
brings to a close the season at CSS and opens
with a preview this year’s voyage with FEFF 18.
The star of the evening is the unforgettable
choreography created by Constanza Macras,
one of the most remarkable figures in
contemporary dance. Here, she presents The
Ghosts, a work of total theatre. This piece
creates a breath taking short-circuit between
dance, theatre, live music and circus: one of
the arts China is most strongly associated
with in the global imagination. A realm of
balance and acrobatics that challenge the
very laws of gravity. Macras’ vision of China
is unique and non-conventional. Her interest
has been captured by the lives and artistic
careers of a number of Chinese acrobats who
are reaching the end of their working lives.
These are people who, at the age of just 25,
are already being left behind and quickly
forgotten by Chinese society. Ghosts, indeed,
and characters that remind us of figures from
Chinese mythology, the “hungry ghosts”,
lost souls that have been forgotten by their
descendants, destined to a barren existence
in a lost realm. The Ghosts offers them a
temporary return to life, once more making
their stories and their art visible and thrilling.

effects than anything Honda

war without neglecting the
extraordinary characters it

as an employee of the
railways, selling food and
drinks from a cart. She’s a
hard worker, but lacking selfconfidence - until one day
she meets a film producer
and they decide to visit the
tourist attractions of Japan

life. As well-written as it is
well-acted, this touching film
resembles a Japanese Hong
Sang-soo: gentle, intelligent
and sparkling.

Praticamente un fantasy
puro, infarcito di trucchi

di Obayashi (la battaglia
finale riesce addirittura
a superare House nella
sua sfrenata e allucinante
inverosimiglianza), ma anche
una brillante dichiarazione
sul conformismo e sulla
libertà di pensiero indirizzata
alla società giapponese
e al mondo del cinema in
particolare.
A high school girl must
use her psychic abilities to
defend her school from an
extraterrestrial attack. The
film is almost pure fantasy,
filled with Obayashi’s
trademark analog special
effects and camera tricks
(the movie-ending battle
manages to outdo House
in its wild, brain-melting
unbelievability), but also
a brilliant statement
about conformity and free
thought, most likely aimed
by Obayashi at Japanese
society in general and the
film industry in particular.

qualificazione alle Olimpiadi
del 1976 della nazionale di
quel paese, è sintetizzata
dalla battuta “Ha più valore
realizzare i propri sogni nel
proprio paese natale” contro
la tentazione di espatriare
per vendere il proprio talento.

Nel 2015 il concorso Fresh Wave di Hong
Kong, riservato ai cortometraggi, è giunto
alla decima edizione e ha celebrato i risultati
ottenuti come vetrina imprescindibile del
talento cinematografico emergente.
Come negli anni precedenti, anche per il 2015
Fresh Wave ha presentato una gamma molto
ampia di temi e di approcci e, con questo
programma, il FEFF di Udine propone una
selezione degli esempi più salienti.

storia di una liceale che per
compiacere la madre e il
nonno è stata allevata come
un maschio. Per la ragazza,
che indossa di nascosto
abiti femminili, la vita è dura
e alla fine dovrà affrontare
la madre disturbata. Un
inconsueto dramma familiare
basato su dialoghi ridotti
all’osso e su una recitazione
eccellente, in particolare
della giovane protagonista.
The winner of the Fresh Wave
Award grand prize follows a
high-school student who, to
meet the expectations of her
mum and grandfather, has
been brought up as a boy.
Life is hard for the girl, who
secretly changes into female
clothes and eventually she’ll
need to confront her troubled
mother. The short relies on
stripped-down dialogue and
quality performances, not
least from the young actress
who’s the centre of attention,
as it delves into unusual
domestic drama.
Hong Kong’s Fresh Wave Short Film
Competition reached its 10th anniversary in
2015 and celebrated its achievements as a
key showcase of emerging film talent.
As in previous years, the 2015 Fresh Wave
series offered a great diversity of themes
and approaches. With this programme,
Udine Far East Film offers a selection of
highlights.

presente senza intoppi e
senza dover strafare.

Un ragazzo, che vive con
una madre dissoluta, si
ritrova con qualcosa che
ha tutta l’aria di essere quel
che resta di una vicina di
casa assassinata e si fa
coinvolgere in un assurdo
tentativo di ricatto. Un film
dallo stile esagerato che
per divertire attinge alla
tradizione della commedia
nonsense hongkonghese.

the film shows a young man
getting an office job and
working with an autistic
colleague, and while doing so
he recalls school days when
a student with autism was
bullied. The short handles
complex material with a
deft hand, allowing her film
to jump between past and
present smoothly and never
resorting to hammering

Division.

Living with his comically
reprobate mum, a young man
winds up with what seem to
be the remains of a murdered
neighbour and gets involved
in an absurd blackmail
scheme. Lui Mei-fung’s film
goes for outrageous styling
and draws on Hong Kong’s
nonsense-comedy tradition
as it seeks to entertain, and
the nutty concoction won
Best Creativity and Best
Cinematography in the
Student Division.

China Now: Independent Visions is a touring
review of recent Chinese independent cinema
productions organized by Cinema On The
Edge. After successful screenings in New
York, London, Toronto and Montreal, it will go
on to Udine, Paris, Vancouver, San Diego and
beyond. It highlights talented young Chinese
filmmakers who have not yet entered the
international festival circuit and whose works

at the same time a fullblooded psychodrama about
lust, violence and genius.

film's fight sequence with
Chuck Norris in the Coliseum

community in Thailand
where he works in an ice
factory, but accidentally
discovers that the boss of
the company is trafficking
drugs. The management
tries to buy his silence but

the beginning of a string
of successes as a martial
artist, providing audiences
with a type of film they had

dovrà attendere il 2013 perché
i giornalisti stranieri possano
accedere a Fukushima. Immagini scioccanti, interviste agli
abitanti delle zone colpite e
alle autorità portano l’attenzione sugli ‘effetti collaterali’
sociali della tragedia.
A four-year journey into the
tragedy which struck Japan
in 2011 in the company of
journalist Pio d'Emilia. After
traveling through the areas
affected by the tsunami
and surreptitiously entering
the 'no go areas', foreign
journalists were forced to
wait until 2013 before they
were permitted to access
Fukushima itself. Shocking
images and interviews with
residents of the affected
areas and the authorities
reveal the social side effects

[ITA] Cosa accade nell’arte contemporanea
giapponese oggi? Tra le novità espositive
del 2016, il Museo d’Arte Moderna e
Contemporanea di Casa Cavazzini propone
una ricognizione dell’arte giapponese attuale
unica nel suo genere e in prima assoluta per
l’Italia. Composta da progetti appositamente
realizzati per l’occasione, la mostra coinvolge
cinque artisti. Almeno due caratteristiche
li accomunano: tutti si sono trovati ad
operare dopo la grande crisi del 2008 e
durante la fase di declino della cultura
otaku nell’arte; ciascuno di essi sovverte il
quotidiano e l’apparenza degli oggetti più
comuni attraverso manipolazioni ed effetti
di spaesamento.
[ITA] Viaggio a Tokyo è un progetto sviluppato
per Far East Film Festival attorno alla graphic
novel di Vincenzo Filosa, fumettista e traduttore dal giapponese. La mostra narra il viaggio
di un occidentale sprovveduto nella capitale. Un racconto onirico delle abitudini degli
abitanti giapponesi e stranieri tra quartieri a
luci rosse, foreste dei suicidi, karaoke, manga
kissaten, love hotel, templi buddhisti e negozi
di jeans. La mostra presenta un centinaio di
tavole originali, matite, libri gekiga originali –
fonti di ispirazione e di racconto del libro – e il
diario di viaggio dell’autore. Il progetto nasce
dalla collaborazione tra il C.E.C. e l’associazione culturale di Bologna Canicola.
[ENG] PARADOXA Japanese art today
What is happening in contemporary
Japanese art? The Casa Cavazzini Museum
of Modern and Contemporary Art presents
a unique overview of current Japanese art.
Made up of projects created specifically
for the occasion, the exhibition involves
five artists and who all share at least two
characteristics: they are all working after
the great crisis of 2008 and during the
decline of otaku culture in art, and each of
them subverts the commonplace and the
appearance of everyday objects through
manipulations and effects of displacement.
[ENG] Viaggio a Tokyo (Tokyo story) is
a project developed by the Far East Film
Festival and based around the graphic novel
by Vincenzo Filosa, cartoonist and translator
from Japanese. Trip to Tokyo recounts the
journey of a naive Westerner to the capital. A
dreamlike, story of the habits of the local and
foreign inhabitants set among the red light
districts, suicide forests, karaoke, kissaten
manga, love hotels, Buddhist temples and
jeans boutiques. The exhibition presents
one hundred original drawings, pencils,
original gekiga books – the book’s sources
of inspiration – and the author’s diary. The
project is a collaboration between the C.E.C.
and Bologna’s Canicola cultural association.

Dopo il successo della prime edizione torna

Prima edizione della sezione mercato che

asiatiche ed europee. Focus Asia si svolgerà
al Cinema Visionario di Udine durante il Far

Al Visionario: Vincenzo Filosa - VIAGGIO
A TOKYO. Un viaggio e un’educazione
sentimentale in una grande metropoli e
nell’immaginario del fumetto giapponese.
La mostra presenta un centinaio di tavole
originali, matite, libri gekiga originali – fonti
di ispirazione e di racconto del libro – e il
diario di viaggio dell’autore. Il progetto nasce
dalla collaborazione tra il Centro Espressioni
Cinematografiche e l’associazione culturale
di Bologna Canicola.
Al Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea
di Casa Cavazzini: PARADOXA – Arte
giapponese oggi. Una ricognizione dell’arte
giapponese attuale, unica nel suo genere
e in prima assoluta per l’Italia. Composta
da progetti appositamente realizzati per
l’occasione, la mostra coinvolge cinque
artisti, quasi tutti alle loro prime apparizioni
nel Paese. Curata da Denis Viva.

FAR EAST COSPLAY CONTEST
On Saturday the 23rd of April from 16.00,
Piazza San Giacomo will explode with the
colour and energy of Cosplay for the FEFF's
contest dedicated to fictional characters (in
the event of bad weather the event will be
held in the Loggia del Lionello)
FAR EAST FOOD
A space in the city centre completely
dedicated to food. Over the ten days of
the FEFF, the Antivari gallery in Piazza XX
Settembre will host a series of initiatives
allowing visitors to discover the flavours
of the Far East, not to mention the typical
products of the local area.
EXHIBITIONS
At the Visionario Cinema, Vincenzo Filosa VIAGGIO A TOKYO. A sentimental education
and a journey through a huge metropolis and
the world of Japanese comics. The exhibition
presents one hundred original drawings, pencils,
original gekiga books – the book's source of
inspiration - and the author's diary. The project
is a collaboration between the C.E.C. and the
Bologna Canicola
PARADOXA - Japanese Art Today. In this new
initiative of the 18th FEFF, the Casa Cavazzini
Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
offers a unique survey of Japanese art today
which is the first of its kind in Italy. Made up of
projects created specifically for the occasion,
the exhibition involves five artists, almost all
making their first appearances in the country.

FAR EAST TALKS
The stars present at Udine meet the public
every day at about 11:00 in the theatre (first
floor). Languages: Italian and English.
FEFF CAMPUS
After the success of the first edition,
the initiative dedicated to young Asian
and European journalists returns. A
real journalism school which will be
complemented by direct teaching
experience. The program will include
seminars and workshops and the students
of the Campus will be ambassadors of the
Festival and of Friuli Venezia Giulia around
the world.

FEFF MARKET
INFO-POINT
During the first week of the festival (21/25
April), Piazza San Giacomo is home to the
seventh edition of the Far East Market,
offering a wide range of Asian products. In
the second part of the festival (April 26/
May 1), the market is dedicated to art and
design, focusing on the excellence and
craftsmanship of the Triveneto area.
An info-point in Piazza Libertà, in the heart
of the city, providing information on the
festival's programme and events, open daily
from 10:00 to 20:00. During the Festival
there will also be another info-point in the
Teatro Nuovo. Opening hours 9:00> 0:00.
PASSES
FEFF NIGHT
29/04/216: a unique evening - one night, one
shot – of incredible music from the Far East.
The stage of the Far East Night, hosted this
year in Pavilion 9 of the Udine Exhibition
Centre, will focus its spotlight on Satoshi
Tomiie, undisputed pioneer of house music.

FOCUS ASIA
First edition of the film market which brings
together sales agents and buyers for Asian
and European productions. Focus Asia will
take place in Udine's Visionario Cinema
during the Far East Film Festival on the 27th,
28th and 29th of April.
GOURMET SANDWICH
CONTEST
Four chefs compete to create the most
mouth-watering Asian-Friulian sandwich,
with the winner decided by the public. Held in
collaboration with FVG Wine Tourism.

information about hospitality and the
purchase and collection of new passes.

holder (no later than 15 minutes from the

is €180 plus gratefully received donation
or contribution to the future of the Festival.

A Press Room on the first floor of the theatre is
