Il centro NAST: esempi di indagine di nanomateriali ed applicazioni ai beni culturali Roberto Senesi Centro NAST (www.centronast.it) Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata SIMPOSIO SPARX-FEL 7-3-08 Biology Chemistry Clinical Imaging Electronic Engineering Experimental Medicine Mechanical Engineering Physics Research center for nanoscale science & innovative instrumentation for application in ICT, energy and environment, healthcare, space sciences, cultural heritage. Kick-off in 2007 Staff: • about 60 researchers • about 20 Post-Docs & PhDs Collaborating International Institutions: more than 15 SIMPOSIO SPARX-FEL 7-3-08 Activities: A Multidisciplinary research and training center: For research programs in materials, life science and engineering Design & Construction of Instrumentation (e.g. Space and Neutron Scattering) To transfer basic knowledge in materials science & nanotechnology to the local industrial environment To assist in the creation of spin-off companies (through E2BLAB, http://www.e2blab.it/ spin off & start up incubator). A route to new teaching opportunities, e.g., undergraduate curriculum in Materials Science, PhD Schools in Materials for Health, Environment and Energy (jointly with University of Florida) and Nanostructures and Nanotechnologies (jointly with UNIMIB) SIMPOSIO SPARX-FEL 7-3-08 ACTIVITY/AREA Health Tissue engineering (soft tissues) Nanotoxicology Nanomedicine Energy Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMs) Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) Solar cells Microelectronics and Photonics Growth and structural characterisation of inorganic quantum dots Optical characterization and modelling of quantum dots Growth of magnetic thin films with diluted magnetic alloys Nanofactory Organic and inorganic nanomaterials Cultural Heritage Instrumentation/methods for Imaging with eV neutrons of (CH materials) ICT Instrumentation/methods for accelerated MeV neutron testing of semiconductors (SEE) Space Instrumentation/methods for space research (e.g. satellites, space station missions, detectors) SIMPOSIO SPARX-FEL 7-3-08 Progetto PANAREA Il Progetto CHIPIR (Chip Irradiation) Progetto cofinanziato CNR & STFC (2008-2016) Progetto IMAT (Neutron Imaging) Progetti di ricerca multidisciplinari: esperti in strumentazione di neutroni, dispositivi elettronici (ST Microelectronic, FINMECCANICA, e Beni Culturali ) Teams: Università di Roma Tor Vergata (centro NAST) Università di Milano Bicocca ISIS Facility CNR Messina CNR - Florence SIMPOSIO SPARX-FEL 7-3-08 Potential interest in Soft x-ray emission (SXE) and Soft x-ray absorption (SXA) spectroscopies Ge nanodots on SiO2 films A.Berbezier, A. Lett 88, 163103 (2006) SIMPOSIO SPARX-FEL 7-3-08 Cultural Heritage “Science”: Analysis of materials The samples are generally: • extremely small • contain a mixture of inorganic & organic materials, often degraded Techniques laboratory based, routinely used for analysis of paint microsamples: • optical microscopy, SEM-EDX • x-ray powder diffraction, FTIR microscopy • GC–MS, HPLC Most recently: LSF (Lasers, Neutron , FEL&SR) e.g.: http://www.diamond.ac.uk/ForUsers/SRUser06/Satellites/Satellite6.htm Issues: • characterisation of pigments, binding media • varnishes, degradation products To input CH scientists, conservation treatment decisions, investigate deterioration mechanisms and to provide information on historical context such as painting technique, original appearance (where materials have degraded) or the use of local materials.
