instrumentation for application in ICT, energy and
environment, healthcare, space sciences, cultural heritage.
Kick-off in 2007
Staff:
• about 60 researchers
• about 20 Post-Docs & PhDs
Collaborating International Institutions: more than 15
SIMPOSIO SPARX-FEL 7-3-08
Activities:
A Multidisciplinary research and training center:
For research programs in materials, life science and
engineering
Design & Construction of Instrumentation (e.g. Space and
Neutron Scattering)
To transfer basic knowledge in materials science &
nanotechnology to the local industrial environment
To assist in the creation of spin-off companies (through
E2BLAB, http://www.e2blab.it/ spin off & start up
incubator).
A route to new teaching opportunities, e.g., undergraduate
curriculum in Materials Science, PhD Schools in Materials
for Health, Environment and Energy (jointly with University
of Florida) and Nanostructures and Nanotechnologies
(jointly with UNIMIB)

Cultural Heritage “Science”:
Analysis of materials
The samples are generally:
• extremely small
• contain a mixture of inorganic & organic materials, often degraded
Techniques laboratory based, routinely used for analysis of paint microsamples:
• optical microscopy, SEM-EDX
• x-ray powder diffraction, FTIR microscopy
• GC–MS, HPLC
Most recently: LSF (Lasers, Neutron , FEL&SR) e.g.:
http://www.diamond.ac.uk/ForUsers/SRUser06/Satellites/Satellite6.htm
Issues:
• characterisation of pigments, binding media
• varnishes, degradation products
To input CH scientists, conservation treatment decisions, investigate
deterioration mechanisms and to provide information on historical context such as painting
technique, original appearance (where materials have degraded) or the use of local materials.

Micrometric pigment maps in paintings
Resurrection, from the Isenheim Altarpiece,
by Grünewald (1512–1516 )
Identification of stibnite micrometric grains by -XRF:
a) fluorescence spectrum obtained at 7.2 keV,
over the cross-section and fitted with PyMCA.
b) fitted elemental mapping of antimony, sulfides,
lead and calcium.
Map size: 17 x 16 m2; step size: 0.25 x 0.25 m2;
beam size: 1 x 0.4 m2 (hor. x ver.).
